my

s on a

rock

. I cleaned the

rock

with a hand brush. I drew the first simple shapes with a chalk pen. With a chalk marker you can easily remove the lines with water and a paper towel. I don't use normal pencils because they can smear the colors. Now I drew the shadow area. The light comes from the top left. Now I draw a curved line to separate the head. On the head I added a small area.

There are the antennas. In the first layer I used regular titanium white from Ddaler Rowney. Brush: Lukas Round #0 Grounding is so boring. I make a little timelapse. I also ground the head with white. It is not necessary because black is not transparent. But I think it gives me a smoother surface. I leave a thin line without

to see where the head begins. The white paint is dry. Now the first coat of Daler Rowney vermilion red. I don't like this red paint, because the pigments separate from the binder. I should always stir with a stick in the tube.

These brush hairs have more tension. I use the following red. Cadmium red medium gold. It is darker than vermilion red. With this color I put the first shadows on the bug. The light comes from the top left, so from the bottom right it should be darker. I rotate the rock to get sharp edges. Switch between cadmium and vermilion to get a better mix.

s. These guys live here. Now 2 white dots next to the first dot behind the head. I use the Da Vinci brush. This advice is more stable. It's not bad if the errors are a little different from each other. I mix vermilion red with white to lighten the wings.

Now I start painting the last 6 points. The dots on the front are a little larger than the dots on the back. Now I add the 2 big white dots on the head. I clean the brush on the paper so I don't have too much paint on the brush. Now the last 2 smaller stitches on the head. With acrylics you can easily eliminate errors. To model the bodies more I start using burnt shadow from Daler Rowney. I mixed burnt umber with cadmium red medium to paint the front of the insects. I added the antennas. Mix of black and white to highlight the head.
I use pure burnt umber for the border. The most important thing for a 3D look is shadows. Pure white to highlight the wings. For the cast shadow I use a mix of burnt umber phthalo blue and Golden's glazing medium. I can paint a clear coat with this medium. I always think about where the light comes from. I paint with these transparent colors also on the insect. That's why it doesn't stand out as much. Watch the bug come to life. :-) The shade seems a little harsh, but with a coat of varnish the rock will darken. The shadow is now dry.
I add some shadows closer to the body. The rock is now completely dry. I let it dry overnight. For the varnish I use Liquitex gloss varnish. I use an old, soft brush. The varnish has a milky appearance but clears up as it dries. Varnish with thin layers. It will dry faster and dust or pet hair won't have a chance to stick. I can remove this varnish from the brush with soap and water as long as the brush is wet. I don't need paint thinner. The varnish is dry and as you can see the shadow is not so dark.
It's too light for me so I add a little more shadow. I also darken the bug a little. Now I add a second layer of varnish on a dry rock. I hope you enjoyed my video. Please like and subscribe to my channel if you haven't already.
