Jeep CJ-5...Supercharged! | Roadkill Garage | MotorTrend

I think we should start here. Old

jeep

s with small block chevys are my favorites. Look at that thing, it looks so good, so let's surprise them with its performance. I want to put a broken small block in this thing. I always wanted to see a 671 in a

jeep

and we are going to do it. I know those guys love silly drivetrain and axle mods and all that wasted capacity and suspension. We could go straight to the horsepower man, that's what we need. do exactly what's going to happen oh yeah I literally haven't seen this in fact I've already noticed something super sketchy here with the direction we need to drive it and find out how terrible it really is so we know what we need to work on first from starting to get worse, how is the management, it actually feels a lot better than it looks, yes, I think we should still fix it, although we will have to prioritize, yes, what will it take to beat Fred? and dave vs what does it matter because there's a lot of evil here but i don't know, i think we could pretty much just get through it as it is to beat those guys, i think you might be right, that's why we have to make it. worse, there's a fourth gear, oh man, it's pretty good, yeah, let's see if the brakes work, done, yeah, it stops on a dime, not bad, you want to try the four wheel drive features, thinking it's probably we should, yeah, okay, ready, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, so that's it.

Four-wheel drive, yes, so there is another one for four lows. Go ahead and slide the clutch in and out a little. Not well. Clearly, the transfer case shifter needs some attention. This is a model 383 engine, what they call a short block plus. meaning it's a fully assembled short block, plus it has a shock, front cover, cam, oil pan and so on. It also comes with a valve train. They actually call it 3d3, but it's 377 cubic inches because it's 4 inches in diameter. a new plane block so it has a 4 inch bore and 3.75 inch stroke the cam is a hydraulic roller it's 221 226 a 50 on a 110 I like it yeah it's pretty good it has forged pistons, 18cc plates and with the head gaskets we're using and a 64cc head, plus we should probably check the deck height, it's in the neighborhood of nine and a half to one, I bet you it really is like nine fifteen to one, so this part is all put together, let's put this, along with what we have here, which are leftover parts from our engine masters, shows that Steve and I do it together, this is a specialties flow trick, 195cc intake runner aluminum cylinder heads and we are going to install a Wind 671 supercharger in a Wyand. collector and has a couple of, I think, 750 carbs for this deal.

See where the steering shaft is on this stabilizer? Yeah, get a saw and cut this out, install it right there, done, now the transmission should go down, okay? now they're resting slightly on the ears yeah and the transmission needs to be pushed towards the passenger side so I'm going to try to do that okay there we go oh perfect I also have to fiddle around with the engine a bit to get some more accessories. on the front and all that, but this morning the big challenge was going to be the steering wheel. This is our new model 383 engine and it has what is called a one piece rear main seal when they came to this in 1985 I think something like that. they changed the design of the back of the crankshaft which meant they also needed to change the balance and that means a different flywheel is also needed what's the problem and I panicked I ordered a bunch of flywheels last night and ended up getting the right one and here it is, the pattern will be different here, whether it's one piece or two piece, but it also requires a special extra weight to screw on, so I ordered that mcleod weight pack separately here and I'm going through your hieroglyphs trying to figure out what weight goes into which bolt holes so I can hit this on the back of the engine and then stick this in the jeep, stop the fuel and here's the leak I was anticipating right there.

You knew it, you knew it, I knew it, okay, it's an amazing wind, it sounded good too, it's great, oh yeah, I just didn't want to leave it running without water, but we're all good now. Wow, incredible. mission marked, brother, this is what starting a new engine should be like, how it feels pretty good, much better than it was overall, this is much better than what we started with, with this direction in particular, it's a Huge improvement and the rear driveshaft is not falling off now, the suspension is still not very good and I hope to make up for that with great power, but we still have a problem, we haven't solved the gearbox issue transfer and right now it is stuck in the low stop range. stop, stop, wait, backwards, backwards, we don't have front-wheel drive, what's going on right there, neutral? okay, there are no fronts, okay, steve, I have to tell you the real reason why I want to compete with the challenger against my busted jeep.
jeep cj 5 supercharged roadkill garage motortrend
Heard when we did that shootout with the land boys every day. I was humiliated by how those guys outdid me with their original flat fender. I felt humiliated by you. I know I appreciate it. Yes, I was stuck in a low range and so the thing would just work. I didn't accelerate, I would just go straight to the rev limiter. I had no acceleration so now I have two wheel drive on high and then the shifter broke the transfer case. All you need is high two-wheel drive. I know, that's what I plan to do to create violence.
Yes, it shows what the jeep can really do, but I have to admit I'm still not so sure I can beat your Junkyard 360 challenger. I feel like a fried hamburger. getting nervous here because my lane is just a mix of mud from start to finish, while yours has a little bit of wetness at the starting line and then is completely dry all the way to the line, so I think I'm a little bit nervous. disadvantage, you may have to request a lane change later. Okay I just agreed to give the jump to Dosage because I have the blown 383 small block in my jeep and he has the used crap 360. no thermal quad and keep in mind I'm in two wheel drive I don't have the advantage of 4x4, yeah that's like trying to race you with one arm tied behind your back it's true oh no rude words i mean my blown up jeep lost a bone flat fender with a v6 in it i have nothing to say just the action carburetors didn't like the bounce but I got it uh oh uh oh I don't have equipment a jeep won't move the transfer case came out of here and the shifter fell off the transfer case so I'm done.
Oh, that's not fun. I have to lie down on the floor and figure out how to get the thing moving again. Oh, look at this. Do you still call it victory? Look at these parts of the Jesus card. driveshaft new joints broken everywhere there's my slip oh look at the back of my transfer case it actually broke the shaft yeah oh you're boned my dana 20 is history oh man wow , fried hamburger, it's a pretty serious flaw, it had a lot of power. You know, the interesting thing is, look, it's right at the finish line, it broke when I picked it up, yeah, how strange.
Wow, that literally broke the output shaft. I just think I was busy breaking this up while you were still there, no, no, I was getting close very quickly. You see how much mud there is, I mean it's a hole and look at your place completely dry, probably why it broke because I plugged it in, okay that's much better than expected, yes I fixed the 383 broken runs, spotless, no there are cables to eat rats or anything like that. So that's fine but while I was troubleshooting to get it working I found out we need a gas cap, the whole fuel system is junk and the throttle linkage doesn't open all the way and fixing it will probably be detrimental to my health shaft, but you can't have the throttle half open, it just doesn't work that way on

roadkill

, now the carnage begins right here where the output shaft on the Dana 20 broke, letting the driveshaft fly out of everywhere and hit my cute little flowmaster a little.
Extend the ears of my rear differential yoke a little and exit the vehicle to begin the repair. I'm going to remove this output housing and let's see what we have there, let's go so you can see the broken trunnion. There, the output shaft is fully hammered. Advanced Adapter sells a brand new set like this, which has a higher output, so in theory it's more robust, so I'll send you a photo of this and tell you what I need. This is the driveshaft that we rescued from the field after the race, it is broken, you can see it still has the broken output shaft piece on there, it needs a yoke with a nut that sets the preload on the roller bearing conical that is in this output casing, but not when it is broken in half, but anyway that gives you an idea of how all these pieces come together and how they separate and how they explode.
This is a miracle driveshaft. We went to the microphone at Driveline Service in Fresno in California and he said, Oh, this is for the bj5. I remember when you guys took out the driveshaft so you could make a 13 and a quarter inch driveshaft that's super small and has the bracket that will bolt onto our add-on flange. CV joint, which I'll explain: a sliding yoke and then of course the universal joint that goes towards the rear. This really isn't enough travel for your typical 4x4. If this thing had a lot of spring linkage the rear end would lean and probably fall apart, let's hope that doesn't happen with this, so what is a CV joint all about?
Normally when you set up a rear driveshaft you want the transmission or transfer case and pinion to be equal and opposite angles at the universal joint for them to work properly the problem is with the jeep, they are so far apart that that angle is too much steep and if you really tilt the rear it would get even worse so what we do is we use a The CV joint is also called a carbon double joint and it has two universal joints so here the equal and opposite angle is on that double joint cardboard, so it will turn smoothly when you have a CV joint in your rear drive.
Shaft, you want to take the pinion and point it directly at the outlet of the transfer case, so this will go in here like this, cb like this and it will be free at home, okay Steve, no more two piece drive shaft, it's there. It is highly questionable whether it will get stuck and collapse too much. I'm not going into too much detail, but it's there. My level of concern is, uh, Friburger, really full fried burger, yeah, really rough, yeah, I mean let's go straight to the sand wash, okay, oh yeah, no buckles for safety. You're always looking for an extra degree of difficulty with two-wheel drive.
I know it was fun with the rev limiter. Did you hear that? Oh yeah, that's pretty good. They are bouncing around in the revliter, but the 383 is working perfectly. I want to try to break it. No. It's unbreakable it's like the titanic oh wait a minute we're going to hit you hard
