Caterpillar D8H Bulldozer Sitting for 15+ Years! (Will it ever run again?)

Mar 19, 2024
You know, thanks, what's up? Welcome

ever

yone back to Diesel Creek. My name is Matt and I have a cool video for you today. Look at the beauty I have here today. I don't know the year yet, but this is a serial 46a. number d8h with a number 28 28 cable control unit on the back here I always wanted a d8 I always wanted a cable machine so I found this one pretty cheap, if we can get it up and running here we

will

buy it home with us. I have good information, reliable information that this thing was parked here about 15

years

ago and was running when it parked.

A friend of mine's dad actually parked it there supposedly, so hopefully

ever

ything has been covered. Well, let's go. to check all of our fluids, hopefully the pony

will

start and if the pony starts, hopefully the big engine will start. I have no way of knowing if it's locked yet until we get that far, so here's hoping I have a chance. If we can't get this Pony motor running long enough to crank the big motor, we're going to have to get that creaking carburetor out of there and clean it real quick. Fortunately, these bolts release immediately. I think the only thing holding that carburetor there now is that goo they used to seal it.

What a rusty gem. I have to take this home. Take it apart and soak it to see if we can save it. So if you are. I'm not familiar with these big old cats, the way this works here. Not only do you have a direct start on these old engines, you actually have a smaller engine. This thing here is a two-cylinder gasoline job. You put that thing in gear and then you start spinning. over the big motor and eventually you'll be able to start it that way, it's the same way as my Lorraine shovel and a lot of other old things, but that's where we're going to start.

I said making noise means we have a jump packet connected here. on the pony starter, let's see if we can get something out of it, generating sparks, so we have something, we have nothing, Rusty, oh, I had something there ready, definitely doesn't sound very good, although yeah, I think we're going To do it. pulls out the initial coordinates for Scrap Metal Industries and this is you, I was so happy that I saw you taking the black trailer there today, I guess for a home brew, uh, cool, I actually like it though, like it's pretty strong, yeah , many times, I know that's why.

I like it, even though it's bad, you can definitely go through some trees. I'm sure so, I can't lose it if I don't have enough material. I said that's probably the length of the tube they had. Here we go. hear compression yes I could probably love it I love that your jump box sounds irritated as soon as you turn it on says bad for my hand I can feel it we want to destroy the starter it's not going to reverse at all oh yeah a little rusty and crusty there, I've seen worse, I might have some Scotch Brite in there, take this off and I'll take this bridle offer and I'll take that one down and, uh, he put it on this roll that he had come to pick up.
That thing put too much, but this set of keys is all you need. I think it might be, oh, it's designed to override, not override, or whatever it's called a ratchet. I've never seen it, although it's rare. All brushes. they were stuck in the motor here so free them up and rework them to make proper contact and grab the right side they're not extending very well pick up the pull back a little bit more this is a lot easier than four . People, yeah, I hate trying to do this alone. I did it one-handed, after an extensive tailgate rebuild.
Here I am confident in the abilities of our starter. Here contact. We don't have any contact. Well, the starter motor is still there. It doesn't sound very good, they're still there playing with that thing trying to redesign it, we'll let AC Doko know where they went wrong with that thing by the time we're done here, but the next concern here, while I wait for you, we're going to take this cover off the side of the injection pump here and make sure the fuel screen isn't stuck half an inch, damn, okay, pretty dry, looks dry in there, yeah, put on some lube. that should make the whole grid turn to the right yeah this whole grid should move from the back go ahead and work see what happens yeah if we put them right on the grid oh there we go gotta start move a real accelerator, well, it moved forward. you might have to engage the accelerator or decelerator in some weird way, okay, so it's turning these guys around, which, oh, okay, while that's turning, there's basically a notch on the side that's a ramp, so when it turns it stops where the stroke is still pushing the fuel. the engine that's how it measures how much fuel goes in there, so the governor up here is the one that controls where the rack is to actually control the speed of the engine.
You're just telling the governor what RPM you want, but after they sit for a long time. moment this gets stuck and this is how you can have a fugitive well we have a moving grate now okay take 32 contact a different sound at the end that's all screwed up I think the teeth that were there are gone well we finally decided on that The starter motor is, uh, it won't be salvageable, so friend of Scrappy Industries, he himself has a collection of

caterpillar

s at home, he's going to go home and burn a starter motor on one of his vehicles and hopefully all of this will work fine.
I don't know how long the air filter has been exposed here, but it's completely rusted from filling up with water, so we're going to remove it from there so as not to suck up garbage in case this thing starts but by soaking and heating these wing screws here . I wouldn't call them wing screws just yet. They're spinning, there you go, we're all safe, dog, look at that, huh, oh, how cute, that's a literal bird's nest, yeah, I think. the bottom pants junk doesn't hold oil that's just different you're putting up a tree stand it's quiet oh there we go down there unless that screw is still there so I did a bad job of explaining what I am. doing here, but I removed the Magneto cover that houses the points and the pony motor capacitor and under there I was able to put a point file and clean those points because after

sitting

for so long, I guarantee those points are corroded and we're not going to make contact, so we won't have any spark for the pony engine, so we clean them all up, it should be ready, friend Sam Scrappy Industries, here we have the borrowed starter motor with a borrowed carburetor.
I wish we could. just borrow the whole tractor, but let's see if we can get cranky now. Mark okay, did you test the starter before bringing it in last time? I used it right, no that doesn't sound right, same thing, let's try that bar like this. Well, I'm not saying it's right, but it's right enough for what we're doing here. We can angle start a bar afterwards, yeah, and the pony dumps a nice soaked oil in there and it's all like that really because the dipstick looks good, water comes out of the carburetor, that's good, well, let's finish it all up a little, oh yeah, and coming out that's when you know it's okay, we have compression because it's blowing.
I can't believe it, he swallowed that water. well, how did it seal so well? I don't know, that's impressive, well we already have this thing fixed now, apparently the engine was full of water and somehow it's still fine after only six negatives, because I don't know. I know that three days four days contact it impresses me it sounds consistent I don't understand any of that it's not right but the fact that it rotates is what impresses me ok well we filled the uh I wanted to fill we put a little oil in the cylinders there, since It was full of water, we'll probably try to put some lubrication back in this thing, we cleaned the points and the spark plug wires are connected, we'll try to see if we have any Spark corn rigs.
I don't see anything, wait, wait, we already started, that starter still sounds much better than mine, ready, no contact, yeah, let's go. I saw it well, moment of truth. I think there's a small chance that potentially maybe something like that could happen. pop off, let's make it happen we have some spark we have some wires we have gas I don't know which way the throttle is on top idle yeah I'm going to adjust the bar give it the beans ready easy contact buddy this is a very smooth switch someone should have restored that switch, better try it, that really sounds good now.
I think it's very slow. I was doing it before. I don't know if it's your jump pack or the starter contact. I almost sounded like something for a second. I want to spray some things without ether. I don't like that water is still dripping out of the carburetor when I get out of there. It feels like it's sucking. Oh, it was definitely sucking well, that means the valves are working. Yes, temperature number two here. contact good, I think the open choke would have been better without a gift, give it a second, it likes The ether until it doesn't accelerate and you're going to run.
I will accelerate. I think it's okay so we don't need the choke so we need ether in one hand speed up in the other oh he's getting interested ready yeah come on Jay foreigner thanks are you ready for the project oh yeah the thing really sounds pretty good, put it on low, so close to running right now, the fuel comes from the pressure. 'cause what oh yeah foreigner got fuel foreigner hot diggity thanks foreigner foreigner foreigner you guys listen to that that makes me a happy guy it's working fine I haven't tried any of the higher gears I don't want to destroy Buddy's yard alone it still seems like the Steering is going to work, the right clutch seems to work better than the left clutch, but I'm sure they'll both go back a little more once we start racing, but he's been tending to his garden and I'm sure he wouldn't like it.
It's going to spin around in it, so we're going to wait until we get to my house to really play around trying to steer it a lot towards the foreigner. Yes, the old sword here has seen better days if you look closely. down here you can see how the blade here is kind of curved up like that, it's probably okay, what a beast the turbo hitting the casing. I don't know about all that, oh that noise wasn't good, still spinning down. so that's not too bad, so the issues with the turbo are questionable, but other than that it seems to run well, not too bad for

sitting

for at least 15

years

abroad, good news, bad news Guys, the good news is that the Dozer runs and moves and it looks like a pretty good machine, the bad news is that I had to cut the video here, but another good news is that I have the rest of this video filmed and it will be on YouTube very, very quickly after this video that I was originally going to watch. to make it into one video, but as you can see, it's getting pretty long here, so we're going to split it into two and you guys are going to get a double feature, so as always, if you enjoyed this video, please let me know.
