When I won my

-generation Ford GT. I was responsible for his stable of cars when he left, which of course was quite often, that's where I acquired the taste for Ford's first street-legal supercar since then. I've had the privilege of inspecting and driving many of these incredible machines across the country, but today I finally got my hands on the all-new 2017 Ford GT. This happens anyway. being owned by Barry McGuire yes, I said Barry McGuire of McGuire's now asking me to help him

Ford launched the second generation of the Ford GT, this time powered by a 3.5-liter twin-turbo EcoBoost v6 engine producing 647 horsepower with a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission and weighing approx. At 3,000 pounds, this GT is a carbon fiber monocoque bolted to the aluminum front end at the rear subframes. It has much more aerodynamic dihedral doors instead of the previous guillotine scalpers and when you switch to track mode the pushrod suspension does this if that wasn't enough. To make you squeal, the brakes are vented with cross-drilled carbon ceramics crossed with Brembo six-speed fixed aluminum calipers. The 20 inch wheels are wrapped in two 45 35's, our 20's in the front and chunky III 25-30 20's in the rear, combine this with all new seats.

The second-generation GT's digital dashboard and touchscreen radio are a major improvement. Here are the basic specs for the first and second GT broken down side by side, as you can see the new GT is longer and wider lower to the ground, 300 pounds less with an additional 97 horses clearly moves it faster than its predecessor, but before we can head out for a

I think watching and helping other Detailers helps me think about my process and how mine could be better or different and what tricks I can incorporate into my routine to increase the quality and speed of my clients' jobs, so Derrick, you are Barry McGuire's personal detailer and he is picky about his cars, as we know, what are some steps you should take to give this car a good clean? Larry, one of the first. What I like to do is get the area we're going to work on really clean, so I take my leaf blower and completely blow out the area with all the debris and dirt and follow up with my water spray pressure washer. the entire area removing all sediment and dust so that there are no contaminants entering the car.
What I didn't realize until I saw it in person is that because Barry's house is literally 10 feet from the beach and water, there is always a little bit of sand that creeps into his

drive

way, so It may be helpful to quickly blow off the soil first and then lightly wet the area to prevent dust and sand from blowing away due to ocean breezes. Now I live in New York, this is something I would never do. I thought or experimented before but it makes sense now, once the floor is clean we can start the car washing process.
Yes, now that everything is clean, we can start physically washing the car. Well, with the car in the place we took. a few minutes to inspect the car for two reasons, one because it's a new Ford GT and everything is new so we were geeking out, but the main reason is that Barry takes these cars to show offense for obvious reasons and Derrick wants to make sure. he can address any issues that may arise from being a new car like this or being at a crowded show on a weekly basis as we all know; Well, things happen when going to car shows and it's our job to fix them before it goes off the market.
Likewise, Derrick's job is to make sure Barry's car once again represents the century-old reputation of his company. I can understand that being illogical to me, so to follow his proper routine we simply inspect the fit and finish of the paint like it was the hundredth. Do not wash for the first time after establishing a baseline for his condition. The first step is to address the engine. Now clearly, this is a new car with low mileage, so a

y detail your engine while Kevin and I played with the engine. Derrick and Mike started working on the wheels. Then, first, the wheel wells are pressure washed with deionized water to prevent water spots in California. An all-purpose cleaner is then used on the rubber with a stiff-bristled brush for its first scrub, but there is a bit of controversy over whether wheel cleaners in general can be used on carbon ceramic brakes.
Some say yes, others no, now the real problem. It's the calipers and rotor caps that suffer the most damage from harsh chemicals or having very hot brakes when cleaning, so keep in mind that most of the time it doesn't really matter, ceramics don't produce enough brake dust anyway. justifies the use of cleaners, so don't waste the product if it is not necessary, instead use wheel soap water to clean minor dust and avoid any possible problem, if it really exists, after rubber spoke wheel brush for behind the rim and a paint brush for lug nut clips and tight spots on the rim this is where it gets interesting for the face of the rim and the back of the spokes Derek uses a different technique than my curved hand method on the wash mitt and I asked him why he cleverly said well when the edge is so close to the rips I don't want to break my knuckles so I slide the towel off and just push it off and I laughed because these are the little things I love to hear when I work in great detail, sometimes the answers are Anyway, it's so obvious that I completely miss them.
He ended up using the towel to clean the wheel wells and then rinsed the wheels one last time before moving on to the next one while Mike and I were working on the other side of the car. Kevin was using his non-foam prewash technique that he had never heard or seen before. This is a solution for people who don't have foam bugs and this car is relatively clean. Also, in this environment we want to minimize the amount of water we use for the rinse cycle, so what I did was take a water bottle, first we filled it with water and then we poured it into some of the car wash solutions, easier to mix that way they won't stick to the bottom and we're going to go ahead and I put a trigger and we're going to miss the vehicle with the solution and let it sit for a minute and then we're going to take the pressure washer and rinse it to remove any loose debris , dirt and grime before washing the vehicle by hand.
Foaming a car is all the rage these days because it can be very useful in certain situations, extreme or heavy dirt, soft paint, black paint, etc., but let's be honest, it's not that dirty and we're in California so we want do the same. The best we can to minimize our water use, even if it's just a gallon or two, plus the water we use is also recycled which is really cool, so these Californians have adapted to their limitations by using just a few ounces of soapy water. a brush and then a quick jet of pressurized water to remove any remaining grease, wax and glue from the trap in preparation for a more efficient and safer wash in the next step.
Now keep this in mind and get some perspective. Derek Kevin and Mike have I've been detailing for many years long before detailing was detailing with forms, videos and new tools etc, these guys can do with what they had and I challenge you to argue any of their results now in the old and wise words from Willie Ahkam in his very razor sharp, the simple answer is usually the right one, so if it works for you, the car looks good and the customer is happy, keep doing it. It wasn't until later that I realized that working with Derek gave me a dose of reality.
You see everything new. It's fun to play with tools, equipment and millions of products, but are they all vital? He made me think, as a lifelong detailer and formula creator, how we can do more with less, create only what is necessary and nothing more, or simply be undisciplined. The answer, although not very sexy or exciting, is something I struggle with on a daily basis and, whether he knows it or not, Derek's approach to details gave me a lot to think about after the quick rinse. Mike and I started on the top of the car with microfiber.
I washed the gloves while Kevin and Derek used new black microfiber towels to gently clean the undersides of the paint clearly after Kevin's special pre-rinse. We don't need to spend two hours washing off the paint. The reason I call love marks love marks is because as car attendants are unconsciously trained in our daily life to scrub the bathtub, the garage floor, the toilet bowl, the dishes again and again to clean them. , but cleaning car paint, especially the soft one, a black paint, is very different, several wipes in exactly the same place. paint is not helpful in minimizing love marks, clean the area once, maybe twice, your goal here is to simply dislodge or release the dirt so it doesn't stick to the paint, that's it, once it's breaks the bond, let the water in the soap lubrication rub it off because you love it or because you think it will get brighter or cleaner, it actually has the opposite effect, hence the name love marks or marks excessive whites that you can see in the paint later.
Derek pressure washes the paint to remove the soap scum and then removes the wand. the pressure washer to allow deionized water to flow freely or remove paint quickly like any athlete on a professional sports team. High-end detailing isn't just about how good you are, it's about the severity and frequency of mistakes you make. Introducing you to the use of filtered water and the sheeting technique may seem tedious or excessive to some, but these efforts decrease the chance of making a mistake and can prevent hours of repairing, polishing, sanding, and most of all, the chance of losing a client in the second part of this series.
We are going to restore the paint, so using drying lubricants like hydrate is now just a waste of product. Also, during the entire time we were washing the car. I was impressed to see how the water was properly recovered and recycled with the use of a sand berm and a vacuum cleaner. system per state regulations below, Mike and Eric quickly sucked up the heavy water from the folds and crevices while I tried to play with Derek's leaf blower. I usually just use compressed air to release trapped water, however, because cars are washed so far from the garage, the hose doesn't reach and although the pressure is not as direct and strong, the blower has a pattern wider and smoother which worked well, pretty much the same idea as a master blaster, also made me appreciate Derek's pre-washed driveway cleaning routine if By the way, Derek, if you're listening, I would have happily changed the problem from 1 foot of snow in New York because of the wet sand problem in California, but that's it.
Only I was jealous becausethere was no more water. I took the car to the garage and got it out of the early morning California sun. For those of you wondering, we parked the car on its side in three bays so we could have more room to film normally at any time. The car just went into the garage without any problems. We opened all the doors, the hood and trunk to dry out the clogs as we would with any wash, but Kevin took out the wet rear to suck or remove the water to avoid dirtying the tablet.
Air again, working with these guys is always a learning experience as I've never thought of that trick before. Finally, the guys used a light reducer on a microfiber towel to check any areas that may have traces of oil or residue before starting the full painting. restoration in part two of this three part series after a full day of preparing, washing and driving this car. I have to tell you, it's legit, it's a big jump over the first-gen model, everything from the paddle shift, the active suspension, the backup camera, and the fact that you have a lot more visibility and you're basically on the which looks like a combat cockpit, the car is all they talked about in the magazines in the next episode, we will jump into Kevin Brown's mind as he shows us. how to compound and polish super smooth jet black paint as always guys, thanks for watching and see you next time
