Mercedes SLK R171 Erfahrung & Kaufberatung

Mar 17, 2024
Welcome to a new video today, an experience story about the Mercedes SLK R171, what you should take into account when buying, we will clarify that for you now. As always I hope you have a lot of fun with it. I've had the SLK here. as a pre-facelift for about a year, so it was formed from the beginning of 2005 with the 200. As a special feature, the car has a 4-cylinder supercharger, semi-lean leather in red includes garf and seat heating , which goes very well with the plain black color. I think the sports chassis with 18" AMG wheels is also installed ex works.

Unfortunately, it has winter tires. For now, the Connect 20 system with navigation system and CD changer in the glove compartment. That was also a good thing. Today in day, of course, is obsolete. Several almost identical looking Chinese radios can be equipped with a large touch screen, Bluetooth and navigation system if, for example, you want Bluetooth telephony or a modern navigation system, but let's get to the point. the strengths and weaknesses of the East model, in the 171 it is not really a problem, quite the opposite than its predecessor, although the SLK is almost 18 years old, the fenders, doors and trunk lid are free of rust, the only What I found is a small rust bubble on the driver's door, sometimes also in the trunk, in the taillight area, a problem area on the underbody, the reinforcement struts may be rusted, but are usually not complete and, if they are, it is not a big effort to change or renew them, even here.

Basically the approval is given, but you always have to look at the vehicle very carefully. Unfortunately, like the 204 or 212, the 171 has problems with a rusty rear end. rear axles, but Mercedes considers replacing the rear axle completely goodwill, even on the SLK, so even with high mileage and no checkbook you don't pay anything extra. The SLK here already has a new rear end Normally this is only noticeable during the general inspection, but Mercedes only makes the change when it is too late and not as a preventive measure. The work always Mercedes then has at least an equivalent value of about €2,500.

However, no one knows if this manufacturer goodwill will ever end. Even with the roof, you can basically give a warning first. There are no specific weak points. Now that is the case, but of course, the Vario roof is also The hydraulic system is subject to wear over the years, as is the 171: five hydraulic cylinders of the hydraulic pump, hydraulic oil and a few meters of pipelines. Although the pipes rarely leak, the sealing rings on the cylinders can eventually collapse, causing a loss of hydraulic oil and pressure in the system. If leaks occur, it will be difficult or impossible to lift the roof, so be careful.

It's time to check the Vario roof, including the windows, for functionality when looking at a vehicle like this. Unfortunately, the hydraulic system itself can barely be seen when inspecting the vehicle. The hydraulic cylinders are located in the center of the front, on the roof. Two other tubular frame cylinders are located on the linkage. of the trunk lid and The two master cylinders are located further back in the trunk towards the end of the vehicle. The hydraulic pump that includes the oil reservoir is located on the wall near the trunk. All of these components can only be accessed with some However, you can usually do the repairs yourself and you can find a lot of good documentation about it on the Internet if you want.
If you have to repair the cylinders, you can buy ready-made sealing rings and install them yourself or you can send the corresponding cylinders to a specialized repair company, which then costs around €100 per cylinder, while a new cylinder from Mercedes costs between €300 and €450. Another problem with the roof can be joints, so check to see if you can find them. Remains of water inside, for example under the mats or in the wash drawer if you look at an SLK. The joints generally last a long time, but they can break at some point due to sliding, for example at the junction between the A-pillar and the roof.
Speaking of the A-pillar, there are isolated reports of wire breaks disabling the roof electronics control. By the way, a so-called roof module is installed here and the roof can be opened with a key when with the engine stopped or with the motorcycle running. The SLK can also be opened and closed inside and is quite durable, although the hard plastic landscape no longer looks very high quality from today's perspective. At least creaks are barely audible, on bad roads the noises are most likely coming from the roof. In this case, with the sports chassis, this is quite clear.
It is very rare for the buttons on the steering wheel or center console to be worn, but what many SLKs have are torn leather seats in the entry area. This was also the case here, the leather was cracked and the color had literally rubbed off. That's why I used liquid leather and leather dye from the leather center for two days. The cracks were filled alternately. and colored in thin layers and the result was really great. Unfortunately I don't have a better image of the original state. The leather color of these seats is called accent red in the center of the leather.
It does not match the original. 100% tone but it's barely noticeable and what I fixed with this I finally treated both seats with the leather color and then applied leather care cream, only the door panels are not soft yet so maybe they still You can see a slight color difference here, the original is a little more purple while the red accent is more red and is clear. Also, the structure of the leather is lost a little due to the filling and the treated areas become softer afterwards, but this is hardly noticeable with this. leather structure and is always better than a broken seat, if the airbag warning appears, this can also be caused indirectly by the seat, as is often the case in this case, or by the switch for seat recognition on the belt buckle is defective or, as before, In this case, the plug for seat occupancy under the seat has contact problems, so first check if the plug is good and the cables are correctly routed, as is the case with all Mercedes .
The annoying ELV electronic steering wheel lock problem should be noted that if this noise sounds annoying then you need to be careful otherwise the car will not start. At the bottom there is a small servomotor in the longitudinal column that is responsible for locking the steering wheel, this wears out and then fails at some point. When the ELV is unlocked it is easier to replace than when it is locked, in Mercedes the replacement costs between 100 and almost 1000 euros, but there are also alternative workshops that do it because the problem is quite well known. Let's get down to the engine and that's where I'm going to focus here on the 200 compressor, which was by far the best seller, it's based on the M271, which is actually one solid unit, but the engine has two.
In particular, there are known weak points: number one is problems with the timing chain, which can lengthen as the mileage progresses, which is relatively clear and cold start can be heard through a rattle, or A rattle can also be heard on this SLK. Startup after 2 months stopped and 0 degrees outside temperature. If you have diagnosed chain elongation, the timing chain, chain tensioner, slide rails and, if necessary, sprockets should be replaced. The second known problem is oil leaks from the crimped shaft. adjusters, which you see here. Leaks can cause oil to enter the connected cables, which then travels along the cable to the control unit due to capillary forces and can put it out of service.
So take a look at the cables on the magnetic adjusters and remove the control unit and look for oil here when looking at an SLK, even if you don't find anything, as a preventive measure install the so-called oil stock cables, which are available at some providers on the Internet for about €40. Mercedes also offers them, but they cost almost twice as much. The SLK is still on the list, but the most important thing is how an SLK drives, of course, everyone has to know and experience it. themselves, but what impressed me from the beginning is the very sharp manual transmission in combination with the agile compressor engine.
That's fun, that's also nice SLK, which is designed to be a little more comfortable, as is typical for Mercedes, is certainly sporty. Definitely sportier than my C-Class and even with the high mileage the car already has, that's always the case, still sharp until everything feels very tight and well, the 163 hp is completely fine too, that's the case here anyway. Especially now with the vehicles that have reached this point, they are no longer a racing machine but a Cruiser for nice trips through the countryside and in that sense it is completely fine, and the consumption here is really good with 6.3 liters on trips long.
So I'm not afraid of the 200 compressor, it's more than enough. Finally, here is my conclusion on the SLK. Overall, it is a relatively problem-free car with some manageable weaknesses that are now quite attractive in terms of price and are also widely available in the market. Just pay attention to the points I mentioned and then you can get a really nice car that we will be happy with for a long time. So I give the thumbs up to the SLK R171, thanks.
