How To Square, Screed & Lay Concrete Pavers (DIY)

Mar 29, 2024
good morning for those of you who are just tuning in to this and haven't seen a couple of videos before we're on the third day here on this job, the first day was the excavation, uh, preparing it, mapping it, the second day of the excavation, was finishing the excavation and starting the filling as you see here and now on the third day our filling continues and today we are going to place some

pavers

. This video won't cover much about padding. You'll see me do some filling, but I'm not going to talk too much about that, so if you want more information on how we did it, watch the two videos before we look at how we install these rails or gas pipes.

Galvanized gas pipes. set them up and size them where we want our

to be, so he's back here with the chip stone, he's not good, I mean the chip stone looks good, but his positioning sucks, sometimes I have to bust his ass To the right, try to get as close to the left as possible. As you can, how was your trip buddy, that's cool, where's the truck, uh, where's the truck block, are you kidding, leave it at Landscape Depot, I didn't even really use it, wow, it's here. I wonder if I left it in the driveway when I left this morning I don't know, I don't know where it is bro, maybe the light comes on, you hit a big pothole, honey, it's a beautiful day, buddy, I don't regret it these shorts not even a little bit. shorts even a little bit dude I had to put on high socks because I started getting chafing on my ankles bro you look like moe clemens remember dude I had knee high boots and then I had thigh high socks yeah I remember that you wore long socks. when you were cleaning the grass in shorts and then your shoes got full of grass, but when I'm older I'll have the sickest comb around when it blows in the wind, look at it, things are going to come off, brother, have a shine. dot in the middle, yeah, only when the wind blows, oh, oh, that was perfect, dude, okay, put it up, yeah, okay, we got crushed stone, if you don't know what crushed stone is, it's added crushed with all dust and fines removed.

They are removed and you are left with 3 8 stone pieces. These are more like the 3 8 pieces and then you have a lot of smaller quarter inch pieces in there as well. Can I get this truck and trailer out of the way in case the client gets home and has to go in and out of his garage because Ben and I are stationed here for a while. Well, I staged it with a crushed stone because I have to raise a couple of these pipes about a half inch, so I'm going to use crushed stone under the pipes to get my height up to where I need it to be right.

When we go from one pipe to another with one in the middle, we want to make sure those grades line up. The perfect reference point is the height of that bulkhead. and our plan is to tilt it slightly this way and then slightly towards us, which means the rear will be the highest, so any surface water that may collect in this yard, the high points will be the bulkhead door and the rear. of the yard and everything is going to tilt and the water will run into this area to keep it away from the house, the porch and the bulkhead door just picked up this new screen this morning 98 inches made by kessin nice

screed

eight feet long, so I just want to show you real quick, now that we get ready, remember we're going to pitch this way, pitch this way, so that's what we want there, if we change it, we have our pitch that way, so these tubes are good. and we get the tone good, we have to jump over these tubes, which is good and this is the most important one because we want the tone to move away from that bulkhead and we do it.

There's this idea that behind um we use the

screed

rails, so that's the height of where the bottom of the paver needs to be plus about a quarter of an inch for compaction and settling so that the area is good, it's in the sieve and breaking that new level of sieve, stay tuned, so it's okay before you go too far with the sieve. It's time to get our

square

, so just to break this down a little bit here, we're making all the edges

square

in this yard, which means we'll be able to stop wherever we want and not have to make as many cuts, but it's important. uh pick the right place to start on a job like this and the place where we're going to start and get our square is this corner of the platform, that way we can draw a straight line down and a straight point. a straight line down without making any cuts and what will end up happening is we're going to have to make cuts on the back of the foundation and against the bulkhead and possibly on that side, but maybe not and then At that point we're going to lay out all of our papers and we'll stop where the best seam line makes sense and continue around the entire area so that the entire back of the yard and the right side are virtually cut-free.
We're going to square this patio to the foundation of the house, so we have our starting point here, which is 176 inches, 14 feet, 8 inches, which brings us to the front of the border and where we'll start laying our regular soil. pavers, so what we have to do is make the same measurement on the other side of the patio and put a stake there and we will run a rope to that side and that will be our guide for placing The pavers were excreted halfway, so I squared up here, we have our square line with the foundation of the house and when I got here we got our level by following the chord that I squared off the level and then we put our ruler down.
My new screen here goes down to the bulkhead and is square with the side of this paver, which is going to be the middle edge, so this line is going to be my square guide for placing the regular papers, so I have a guide going in that direction. and it goes that way and knowing that this is not going to move I put three pavers on the back so even if it moves a little bit I know where it has to go back to so let's put these pipes that Benny talks about . four feet until it's done, we're going to take out all of these pipes and start laying them down, so now that we know that this furring rail is square with our rope, I'm going to get our level and our square out of the way.
I know a lot of people worry about stepping on the sand in the bed after screeding it, but the nice thing about this agglomerated stone is that it is very firm and if you have to work in a certain area, all you have to do is remove it with a trowel. or add a little bit of stone as you go and that way you can be a little more mobile in your bedding holder and do things a little more efficiently so we want to start here so there we are. and the reason I was saying it's important to start here is now along this edge of the porch and this edge of the porch there will be no cuts that we're going to line up the edge that seam line and the only thing we'll have to cut it's down on that side and maybe down on that side, so we're getting places, people, we're getting places, the seam lines look good, they really look like these pavers that will be the contrast right there, so that our guidelines work very, very well here, that keeps our pavers nice and straight and now, what I'm going to end up doing is we're at the end there, so I'm going to place the pavers where it's like right here because the ideal way to place the pavers is at a 45 degree angle to stay as square as possible, so we're going to hook that back end around the corner and then start laying it where we've screeded. and then once we have it, we'll stand on our bulkhead here and see where the day takes us, we'll probably try to put the trim around the edge of whatever we put up today so that everything that goes up is done and then , when we get back and the next day we can worry about that side over there, hey buddy, am I in your way?
So where is it upside down? Say you like quesadillas, damn sissy, buddy, see that thing just landed okay. On me, buddy, you can relax if you can handle the ride, it's bumpy, oh, it fell, come on, go ahead, how to get out of here, it's on a little piece of chip rock, oh, now it's upside down, there you go, the thing falls on a joint line. It's going to be like what is that, ah, the Grand Canyon. I didn't know what he was talking about for a minute. He was confused with myself. I have to get them out of here.
Come on, get on Chip Rock again. No dont go. In the hole, come on, come on, come on, where do you want to go? Turn a nice little patch of grass. Oh, he just wants to be with me. I guess maybe grass isn't the best place. You shouldn't put it on hot metal. or what do I do with this thing, what should I do with them, okay, you're going to go to the grass, it's grass, a bad place for a butterfly, a butterfly ladybug, oh, it's upside down and stuck, okay, buddy, I'm the mother of this thing, now someone. comments on the butterfly video, I mean, someone comments on the video and says ladybugs can't fly out of the grass, they get stuck, the update time moves along joint lines, it's nice and straight, then it's over here putting the edge and because we square our line. with the porch there are no cuts around here and he can just put the edge on and then with a square patio we don't need to have a precise measurement, but we get to where it makes sense to stop with the seam line and now we can just put the edge on, there's no cuts here and then here, we actually line up pretty nicely with the edge of the porch, so there's no cuts on this side, which is always good, uh, Betty, just keep going with the edge which I don't.
We don't have to cut, we do a lot of patios where we cut almost all the sides of the patio because they are all nice and round and curvy. It's good to make a square one here and there, Benny, it's very pretty. I like the design. Yes, it's good. and also here we will not have to make any cuts. Depending on where we land in front of the bulkhead, we will most likely have to make cuts there and we will most likely have to make cuts along the foundation. but again, on that side we can stop the yard wherever we want and go straight looking very, very flat.
I really like these pavers, they have sort of wavy seam lines if you look closely, the edges are not. straight, they are a little wavy, so it looks more like a paver than a straight edge paver. I really like the style and the contrasting border is really perfect, dark enough, so when you start putting the border like that, right? Against the perfect square point, you end up without a cut on the edge, so with this type of style in this design, if you use these pavers together, you could make a rectangular or square patio without cuts. and I have a very attractive and attractive result without cuts because all the papers line up perfectly together, so we got our slope that way.
Everything is working perfectly guys, I hope you are enjoying the video I am going to release. You have a very quick time lapse while I lay out this part, so we ended up having to trim the pavers against the bulkhead a little bit, which is fine and that's enough room to be able to place a border. in front of the bulkhead, so I'm going to mark that line and cut it, I rely on the old favorite ts-420 steel saw to use, so there's our cut, it's the end of the third day, we look good, the third day we are excavated for the most part. again full and then I would say almost half the yard sweet hope guys who are still with me did you enjoy the video if you did hit the thumbs up if you are not already subscribed hit the subscribe button for a Lots of content like this.
Alright, so take that big step, so okay guys, until the next video. Thanks for your support. I hope you enjoyed the video. Peace.
