Mar 24, 2024
Hello, welcome to Jujube DIY. I'm Sarah, thank you so much for joining me today. Today I'm going to show you how to make this super adorable

gingerbread

train

home

decor

piece and today's video is part of an open playlist I'm hosting. With my good friend Jackie from Mimi's World Crafts, you'll get tons and tons of

gingerbread

inspiration and I'll tell you a little more about that here in a few minutes, so to start off, I'm using one of these. Dollar Tree flashlights. I'm going to use my utility knife to mark the top where the lantern and that top piece meet.

I'm going to use several pieces of this lantern for our

train

and you just have to score a couple of times on each side with your box knife, it's not difficult. I tried using my heat gun to remove the top but the way they put them together is not just with some glue but there are also some pieces of wood that fit together. like a puzzle so I definitely had to use my pocketknife for this and there you can see I took the top off, it was pretty easy and you can see those little holes there where the bottom of the flashlight fits into that top at that point. once you remove the top everything else just comes apart, be gentle because you want to save those side panels now before you continue.

More Interesting Facts About,

gingerbread and peppermint train home decor diy...

I wanted to put this putty in these little holes. I'm just using the dollar. Tree putty on my finger to fill them in and then I'll let it dry and sand off any excess and then for the back of the train for the cargo part, you're going to need two of these little treasure boxes that I picked up. from the Dollar Tree, but probably at Michael and Joanne's Hobby Lobby, everyone carries these little treasure boxes, so you just take off all the hardware and then you'll use the bottom, so you'll need one for each loading part. your train, so as many as you want, I decided to go with two, so I'm going to prepare two of these little treasure boxes, so I'm just going to give them a quick sand and then I'm going to fill all those holes with some putty.

Well, that will give it time to dry properly, so while it's drying I'm going to measure those side panels. Now on to the side panels, two of them are wider and two are thinner, so you'll want one of each of the narrower ones and one of the wider ones. I measured two and a quarter inches on each of them and then I made a line with my pencil and then I'm just using my utility knife to separate them so just mark it a few times and then it will break easily just be careful because you definitely want to preserve its edges as much as possible and as you can see I'm just trimming off any extra pieces that may have chipped. and then I'll just clean it up, so I'll do it with a narrow panel and then I'll do it with a wider panel and then I'll give everything a good sanding.

Now we're going to put our pieces back together, so using some of this wood glue from the Dollar Tree, this is Super Glue Wood Glue. I really like this blue for wood, it dries quite quickly and is a wood glue that sets very well. I'm going to use some wood glue and hot glue to attach my panels, so what are you going to do? I'm using my square here to make sure everything lines up, but basically you'll want the wider pieces to face each other with the narrower piece. between those wider pieces and that's how you're going to create your box and you're just going to put it together like you would a normal box and you're going to use your square to make sure everything lines up as best as possible and then I'm going to add a little bit of hot glue on those joints. interiors just to secure it even better.
I think wood glue and hot glue would have been safe enough, but I just wanted to make sure it was nice and secure. Then adding a little more of the wood glue and hot glue combination, I'm going to place it along one edge of our little box and then I'm going to put it back on the top that we originally removed and this will start. of our little engine, so I'm going to take three of the falling tower blocks, I'm going to glue them next to each other to form a square and I'll do this twice and then I'll glue them to the bottom of our little box here and The reason I'm doing this is because I wanted my train engine to be a little bit taller than it was and because of that

decor

ative piece that comes on that side, you can't, you'd have to use like two of the lanterns to lengthen them because I basically cut those side panels in half and you need two of the wider ones, so that was my solution to make my engine a little taller.
I have these macrame wood pieces that I picked up from the Dollar Tree, my Dollar Tree had two different sizes and these were the largest ones, about two inches, and then I have these little round pieces of wood that I bought at Michael's and they are about an inch and a half wide. and I'm just going to glue those little wooden rounds in the center of these macrame rings, so I just add a little bit of hot glue to the edge and then I go around the inside to secure it and start by using a little bit of wood glue, but I think with the Gorilla glue sticks that I use I'm not going to have any problems with this separation, so I'm just going to use hot glue, but you can definitely use any type of glue that you feel most comfortable with, that will give us the front of our train here.
I was inspired by a real gingerbread cookie train and they had used round cookies for the front so that's what this represents. um, but in the end what you're going to have is some wood around a macrame ring, a wood around a macrame ring, a round wood and finally another macrame ring and that will be for the front of our train now to make the small sliding part. On the front I'm using this wood kit which is a wood kit for Derby cars and I had two of these little wood kits and in those wood kits there are these little ones, I don't know what they are, they're for the back of the car, but they make kind of a perfect little semicircle I guess, so I'm going to glue those two pieces together and like I said, you're going to have to have two of those little wooden kits for this, but you're just going to glue them together. those two pieces together to make that half people round and then that will be our little front part of our train skid.
I guess that's what it's called. I don't know what that piece is called if you know what that piece is called. a train let me know in the comments and again for this part I'm just going to use a combination of hot glue and wood glue again. I just want this to be as sturdy as possible, it definitely won't be played with. It's just going to be for decorative purposes, but I definitely don't want it to fall apart in the future, so using a little bit of that wood glue will help hold this whole thing in place a little bit better and then you can see that we're just going to add that to the front of our little box we made and I'll give everything a coat of Waverly chalk paint in hazel once everything is glued and dry.
Thanks now that the basics of our train locomotive are done, let's move on to our cargo boxes and as you can see, I painted the bottom of that treasure chest with Waverly chalk paint in hazel. Our cargo boxes need some wheels, so for each of your cargo boxes, as many as you want. To make your train you are going to need one of those derby car kits from the Dollar Tree and in that kit come these little wheels and the pegs. Now, since our box is wider than our dowel, I just cut the dowel in half and then I'm going to glue them with wood glue into the hole, as you can see here on the wheels.
Now you'll want to make sure you don't push them down past the edge where you want it to be. nice and flat is because we're going to glue something to the front of those, but I also painted them with Waverly chalk paint and hazelnut and then we're just going to attach them to the bottom of our cart with a little bit of hot water. glue, as I mentioned before, today's video is an open playlist in collaboration with my friend Jackie from crafting in Mimi's world. If you haven't visited her channel and you love gingerbread and fun, easy DIYs, you should definitely go check it out.
She is so amazing and amazing and I love Jackie, she was one of my first friends here on YouTube and we really bonded over gingerbread, she makes amazing gingerbread crafts so if you are looking for lots of gingerbread inspiration ginger and you haven't checked it. She's available now but definitely go check out her video and of course today is an open playlist and we're going to have a link in my description box below where you can go and see tons of creators making tons of bread DIY ginger for you. I'll have a lot of inspiration from Gingy, so definitely go and check it out.
That long piece you see here between my cars is from a wooden helicopter kit from Dollar Tree. I love picking up those little wooden kits when I see them because there are so many of them. lots of cool little pieces that you can use for all kinds of things and originally one of my little box cars here, as you can see, was red on the bottom. I had actually made a little car out of it and I'll link that video above. for you if you're interested in seeing how I made a little mini car for tear tray decoration but these little pieces are just amazing so if you don't have that helicopter kit you can cut up a craft stick that you don't have. to have your cars connected if you don't want to, if you just want to put them on your shelf or wherever you are going to display your train, you can do that separately now we are going to work on our wheels, these wood round pieces that I have are just from a kit I got a long time ago to make a birthday hanger display and I never used the pieces so I found them in my stash.
They are about an inch and a quarter wide so a one inch wooden round would work well here and I just covered those holes now when you are going to paint something small like this a little tip or trick is to put some tape on of painter's tape Blue Tick down with the sticky side up and then place your items you want to paint on the painter's tape and you won't have them rolling or moving on you while you try to paint and also like these little larger wooden rounds that I get from Michael's and they are about one and a half inches, you can just place them on a little piece of tape on your finger and then you can paint the bottom and sides of the wood as well.
Now I'm going to turn them into little

peppermint

candies so you can I can see I'm using my pencil here. I marked the middle as best I could, just eyeballed it and then I'm going to make those kind of swirl marks in the middle or on the little pieces of wood here and basically I'm just making four little stripes and then I'm going to paint them with waverly chalk paint in crimson and as you can see I'm just using a small detail brush that I bought at Walmart and it's a really easy process. It only takes a few minutes to paint them, so I apologize in advance because this is just one project.
I know you guys love gingerbread inspired projects and I have tons of inspiration for you coming soon, but this video will just be Train Today because it's a little more complicated and there were definitely a lot of extra steps to create this cute little train, so that once all my red was painted on my mints, I'll go in with a black Posca paint pen and just keep going. to surround the red parts just to help them stand out and now I'm going to use these little flat pearls from the Dollar Tree and I'm going to hot glue them into the center of each of our mints and now we're going to hot glue those right on the front of our wheels that we had hot glued onto our boxes earlier and look how cute it is looking now our larger pieces of wood or rounds of wood that we painted with the mints are going to go over the side of our box and then one of the smaller ones will go to the front of the leg of the train and you'll see what I'm talking about here, as you can see I have a larger one and then a smaller one.
I'm going to use some puff paint. I bought this bottle from Walmart and it's just puff fabric paint that you would use on t-shirts or fabric of some kind, but it works great on wood decor. just like you would with a gingerbread cookie, so I'm just going to add a little bit of puff paint and then I'm going to add some of these little red wood beads. These beads came from the Dollar Tree. They were in a multipack that had like a Rainbow with a variety of colors and multiple different sizes and these were just a couple of the smaller beads that now go between our macrame rings that we had made earlier.
I'm going to add a little bit more of that puff pastry paint and that's just going to Basically make it look like the cookies that were put together with the frosting, so I'm going to decorate this like I would if I were decorating a bread train. real ginger and I'll let you enjoy the music and enjoy the decoration. thank you and how nice it is that I love this evennow so now we're going to work on our cars and I picked up these straws from the Dollar Tree that are like striped candy canes Jackie had used these last year in quite a few of her different DIYs so when I saw them at my Dollar Tree I definitely picked up a pack to use for some gingerbread DIYs so I'm just going to measure the length I need for my box cards and then I'm going to use my utility knife to cut them out and I decided to use a utility knife instead of scissors because I had afraid that if I used the scissors I would pinch the ends and then they would be a little crooked so I wanted the straws to be as round as possible and then before I add my straws to my wagon I'm going to use a little more of that paint to decorate the outside of my boxes and that's just because I wanted to give it time to dry and I didn't want the puff paint to get too much on the straws because I just wanted them to have a cleaner look so I thought I'd get the paint of puff pastry.
At first, that would help keep it from sticking to the straws, but you can definitely do it however you want, you might want to put a little paint on the straws and that's totally fine on anything you do to decorate your gingerbread train. It's totally up to you and that's one of the things I love about these little gingerbread inspired projects is that you can really let your creativity flow with these projects and if you're having a hard time figuring out how you want to decorate your gingerbread inspired crafts Definitely, definitely like Pinterest and check out real gingerbread decor, like real gingerbread houses and trains, and all I mean is they make all kinds of things with gingerbread and definitely you can get tons of inspiration from real gingerbread decorations and I just used hot.
Paste here to glue those straws and I also wanted to add some of these straws to my train locomotive so it's an afterthought. I thought, oh, that would be really cute on the little train engine, so I'm going to cut down four pieces and put two on each side of the train and you see here, I'll do one side and then I'll do the exact same thing on the other side and I love it. how this little train turns. It's very cute and will be a very fun decoration piece. Now I had some of these Valentine's Day picks, they are little hearts on skewer sticks and I basically removed the skewer stick from the heart or cut it however you want.
I want to do it with this kind of look. I found that the skewer sticks actually twist out of those hearts, but I'm going to add some of these red hearts to different parts of my train, you'll see where. I'll add them here in just a minute, but if you don't have these little red hearts, you can definitely paint some red hearts on your gingerbread train here wherever you want to add a little red heart and then I had these little wooden candy canes. It came from Hobby Lobby as a little wooden kit and I just painted two of them, placed them together to look like a little heart and then I'm going to put it on the back of my train and that's just because I wanted to add a little decoration on the back of the train you can definitely add whatever you want and then I'll come back with more puff paint and finish decorating my gingerbread train here and that's pretty much all there is.
I'm just going to add. a little puff paint on top just to hide the seams, that's basically what I'm doing here. I'm just making it look nice and clean, so you'll continue decorating until you're happy with how your train looks, oh now, before we get to the final reveal, I wanted to make note of the fact that I'm not going to glue on hot nor glue my boxes to the engine of my train and that will just give me more options for decoration, like I wanted to angle my um my engine differently than the box cars, that will give me that option so you can definitely glue them all together if you wish or you can keep each piece separately.
It's completely and totally up to you and here's a look at our final review. I'm incredibly happy with how this little train turned out. I absolutely adore it and can see it as part of my decor for years to come. You'll have to tell me what you think of this. little project again I apologize for only having one project in this video but as you can see it took us 24 minutes to complete creating this sweet little gingerbread train and I knew there would be a big playlist today and I want to make sure you have time to see everyone's video in the playlist, so definitely check out that playlist, check out Jackie's channel if you haven't been there, make sure you go to Jackie's channel today and check out her video.
