Building a 5 Acre Pond! (First Time Fishing)

Apr 03, 2024
friends at home welcome back to crimson oak

pond

and if you missed the previous videos in this series I'll put a link in the description below and last week was the moment we've all been waiting for and that's because we stocked the bass in the

pond

and I must say it was an extremely satisfying

time

because it took us a full year to build this pond and fill it with bait and get it to that point where we could put the bass and We are also going to work on improving our grass and the grass around the pond with a product called Sunday, so I've been going to the pond early in the morning to try to see what the bass are doing and believe it or not, it's hard to spot these little guys and to me that was a little surprising because we have a lots of bait here in the shallow parts of the pond and I assume the bass would be here feasting all day, but I have a couple of theories as to why they are not in the shallow part of the pond.

My

first

theory is that we had a big heat wave and we had several days over 100 degrees and usually the bass stay in the deeper water because it's colder at that

time

. My second theory is that they are not hanging around the banks because we have had a lot of blue herons in the pond and unlike bait fish, the bass are smart enough to avoid them and I think that is one of the reasons why. We hadn't seen them in the shallow area, but luckily I installed these underwater green lights and some of them are actually in deeper parts of the pond and that attracts all the bait fish and you know it's going to bring in those bass, so I enjoyed sitting here on the dock at night watching those little bass and I'll show you several of those clips later in the video, but several people asked us about our other pet bass so I wanted to give you a quick update on what it's going to be like. the future for them so we have our two original bass bonnie and clyde in the backyard pond and we will move them to the five

acre

pond as soon as these bass the fry grow a little bigger and the reason we are waiting It's because unfortunately the bigger bass will eat the smaller bass, so we didn't want to put Bonnie and Clyde in the pond and have them eat a bunch of these two inch fry that we just put in. but there is a good chance that many of these bass will gain about a pound in the

first

six months of being in the pond, so we are thinking that maybe this fall all the bass will be big enough and we can move bonnie and clyde to the pond and as soon as that happens we will be moving Moby to our backyard pond and the main reason is that we raised him since he was about three inches long and we loved seeing how aggressive he is and we feel that if we put him in the backyard pond we can watch it for a while longer and also see how it interacts with the other fish there, the bluegills and the crappie, and that will give us a few more months to watch it and So when Moby moves to the backyard pond rear, that will leave our 300 gallon aquarium empty, so I had an idea, since we have a pond full of small bass and bluegills, I could go out and catch a bass and a bluegill and put them in the 300 gallon pond. gallon aquarium and it would be like we start cycling again, so my goal for today is to go out and use micro

fishing

gear and lures and catch some small bass and bluegills, but we have a little problem from the movies.

Even in the 300 gallon aquarium, we had to find those fish another place to live temporarily, so I bought this 75 gallon aquarium. We will set it up with wood and live plants and this will be the temporary home for these two fish until all of our other pet bass moves into their new home, okay we are getting ready for the first bass

fishing

trip. I have a bunch of micro lures, some rooster tails, little crank baits, but I think something like these little swimbaits should be perfect. on a small jig head, basically cutting lures because we need them very small, something small, white and shiny should work.

I'm going to put them on some ice fishing rods, okay, we have perfect conditions out here, it's cloudy, there shouldn't be any wind. a nice morning bite okay we're going to start with a little chartreuse crankbait for me you shouldn't be able to resist that but we're also going to start around this area of the dock which should be the hot spot where we put everyone. of the structure, gravel, fish feeders, island, underwater lights and even a diffuser out there, so it should be one of the main focal points of the pond. There should be loaded bass here in this area.

There's a bass right there. I just saw him hit. oh we got it there come on oh man it's a nice little one okay I just filled this with water from the pond. I'll put him in there, try to catch a bass and then we'll take him to the aquarium, look at that bass. chasing Shad, that's cool, there it is, I think I got it, no, bluegill, um, I just knew it was Mr. Bass, dating another doctor, so it was at this point that I knew I was going to have to change my strategy, there are too. lots of bluegill hanging around the dock so next step we went and tried Alcatraz Island and no luck and then I tried some of the sunken log piles, there has to be one right there, no luck so I thought carefully sure there would be a hungry little bass hanging out.
In Bonnie's swamp, around all this structure, I couldn't catch one there either, so my only conclusion is that I was going to have to go out and fish deep, so I started looking around the dam and then some of that water 12 feet and you guessed it. no luck either, so at this point I've come to two conclusions: the first is that they are simply too small, only two inches long, and won't care about artificial bait, and then my second conclusion is that maybe they feed so much on the night around those green lights they don't really eat much during the day so we'll come back tonight after dark and try them again today we'll be working. with a product called Sunday to help improve the grass around our backyard pond as well as on the farm, and we started the first application of Sunday's product about six weeks ago and this is what our grass looked like, it was in pretty good shape. shape, but You could see that there were a couple of bad spots and this is a quick look at what the grass looks like six weeks after applying the ice cream product, so the first thing I like about Sunday is their product selection, Not only do they carry lawn fertilizers, but they also carry insect repellents and even seeds for those dead spots, and in case you haven't seen the video, Sunday's products are extremely easy to use, basically just hook them up to a water hose. , ready, it has a pretty good range.
Sunday works as a subscription service and you start by using the tools they give you to take a soil sample from your backyard and you send it to their experts and depending on your soil and climate, they will send you back the exact combination of fertilizer you need to keep your garden looking great all year round, so Sunday takes all the guesswork out and makes it extremely easy to use with these bags that attach to your water hose, so if you're interested in checking them out, head over to get sunday dot com slash bama bass and get 20 off with code bama bass 20.
Alright guys, you just got a package that I've been waiting for a while, Starlink, which is high speed internet, so currently we don't have any capacity. of having internet here on the farm and if we had, I could have live streamed the entire pond construction, but that's okay, we have several other projects we are going to work on, including live streaming some underwater cameras and such. Maybe some wildlife cameras. so we're about to set it up alright, the setup has started, it's searching for all the satellites right now, it's crazy to have this technology here on the farm, but we gotta get it all right folks, it's time to feed the animals , show them what.
We're putting here these are the initial pellets that we put in the fish feeder. You've seen them before, but now that it's summer and the deer are starting to grow their antlers, I'm going to try some protein food and this is it. similar to protein pellets for fish and it also says it's waterproof and I'm trying what I think is another Alabama blend let's see yes it's from Clayton Alabama and it's a mix of corn, peanuts, soy and citrate of calcium so that Protein should help all bucks put on their antlers. I also give you a good meal for tonight, but the fish is the most important thing, so we'll start with a fish, so we'll see how much a 50 pound bag adds to this.
The feeder covered the window, not that bad. I believe this is the 300 pound feeder. Well, we put the two piles next to each other and you can see that the darker pile is the protein granules and then this other pile is the corn and protein mixture. and I put them side by side so we can see which one the deer prefers, but I can almost guarantee you it will be this protein blend because it smells so good, it's almost like there's a peanut butter powder coated around the corn and soy. , so I don't think we're going to have any problems with deer eating this, but you know every time I do this type of testing I can't miss the opportunity to set up the night time span, so tonight we have a nice sky mostly clear. and just to point out that you can barely see it, but our owl house is on the bottom left, kind of mixed in with the grass and now that the moon is out you can see Hooter or Al Capone or I guess it could even be the third owl that We discovered in our last video it is hanging in the owl house and it seems that the deer have found the protein.
I can't tell from this angle which stack they're eating from, but sometimes man. you just have to relax and enjoy that view and now we finally have that sunrise which was a pretty good overnight stretch, but it looks like we have a straggler who slept late last night and now he finally comes up here for breakfast and you. I can see that it is another young man dressed in velvet. I will definitely be interested to see if this protein has any kind of effect on his antler growth this year. Alright, let's check out protein stacks. It looks like they probably hit the pile of corn and peanuts. a little more than they did with the protein pellet stack, but that was to be expected.
I would definitely say the protein feed is a hit. I'll probably make them some more tonight. Now it's time for an update on the six ducklings. It's been a lot of fun, so for the first 10 days we didn't put out any big buckets of water because we weren't sure if they could swim yet, but this is one of the first days we put out a bucket of water. and just watching them swim for the first time, they are almost always watching momma duck and learning new tricks from her and they definitely look like they are having fun in the water, but we decided not to name these six ducks because unfortunately we are going to end up giving them away, the last thing we What I want to do is put them in the pond and have one of the predators like owls come looking for them, so we think we have found a good home for them.
I'll save them for a couple more weeks. I love it when those little wings flap and it seems like today the crimson cabin is the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. That's cool, so I'm here on the dock watching. The fish lights underwater and I decided that instead of fishing tonight and trying to catch a bass, I'm just going to watch a little more because I've been here a few nights and you can really learn a lot about how all these fish interact. but first things first, you're probably a lot like me when you first look down here, it looks like a cloud of fish swimming around and you can't really tell what's what, but after watching them for a while it's pretty easy.
Pick it up so the little ones and fat ones that are always swimming counterclockwise are the tarpon and they are forming type fish so that they are always together and each of them always imitates what the others do in school and that. makes it very easy to pick which one of these is the bass, so the bass usually always go upstream and basically swim out to the school and size them all and eventually pick the smallest shad and just see the size of the little fish. What these bass are targeting lets me know that it may be a week or two before I can catch one of them because they are still really interested in those small fish and another thing that all fish discard.
They've been eating the bugs here, so obviously these big bright green lights attract all the bugs and I've seen theShad will eat the smaller bugs and then the bluegills and the bass will eat the larger bugs and the bluegills are also pretty easy to spot. They will have the largest profile of all the fish and usually stay there on the outside of the light and will dart in whenever they see something they like, which is why I have kept bass and aquarium pets all over the place. my life. I have to see them but having these underwater lights in the pond takes it to a new level because I can actually see the bass in their own environment and this is something that I am definitely interested in pursuing in the future because I don't know many bass ponds. have underwater lights and I feel like this will do one of two things: it will extend your feeding hours and the bass can grow even faster or it could potentially do the opposite and make all the bass bigger.
They become nocturnal because they know they have an easy meal right here in the light, so we're going to play with them this year and see if it has a positive or negative impact on the pond, but either way, it's definitely fun to see them watering the trees. because we are in a small heat wave. Look, look at a bunch of caterpillars hanging from an oak tree, but if you missed our last video, we had a third one. The owl comes in and a group of three owls are called parliament and I ask everyone to help me name the third owl and the winner was nocti and they said to name the new owl like houdini because they came out of nowhere.
I think houdini is the perfect name and now we have an owl written by Al Capone, capone, a mermaid and a Hoodini, and we will also tag the first one under 104 if you missed the last video, check that one out, it will explain it to you. all the rules of the contest, but I'll let everyone name the first bass 104 and we're doing four sets from a to z and we almost have the first set of basses from a to z named and those bass names are in the column of the left and the YouTuber who suggested them is in the right column, so we're only halfway there.
We still have at least 50 names left so keep leaving those fish names in the comments below until we completely fill out our list and even Paul made the list in the last video with the bass named Digi so here are a couple guys we haven't seen in a long time and they talk about bacon. I'm not sure what crops they've been eating, but they've been hitting them. difficult, these are two pigs that we call hakuna and matata and here we see them when they were little piglets. I'm pretty sure they were born on the farm because we got a lot of videos of them that first year, but they disappeared afterward. that and we only see them once in a while, but they've gotten big and the funny thing is I'm pretty sure they came out because they smell these protein granules and they're here and they seem to be going. everywhere except where the protein is, so I hope we don't have problems with these guys in the future.
I know pigs can multiply like crazy, but since we've owned this farm, it's only been these two hakuna matata and they never seem to find the protein, but some youngsters with a much better sense of smell found it the next morning without any problem and We're also growing soybeans on the farm in a couple different places that should be producing for them here very soon, so let's go. To finish setting up the 75 gallon aquarium and catch that new pet bass in the next video, hopefully it will be a little easier for us once the basket is a little bigger and now it's time to feed Mr.
Moby. Very good friends. To conclude this video, be sure to hit the subscribe button. We have a lot of fun things coming up with these basses, but I hope everyone enjoyed this video and I'll see you next time.
