How to build a temporary electrical service

Mar 20, 2024
Hey guys, in this video I wanted to take a few minutes to talk about some of the requirements for installing a

temporary

power pole. I looked online at several different videos and had never seen anything that fit the particular area where I am. Live codes vary from location to location, so I thought I would make this video to show you a little bit about some of the requirements for

temporary

power

service

within this area within Kentucky. Of course, even within Kentucky the codes are very similar to this. It's for new construction, as you can see behind me depending on the glare of the sun, and we have our set of poles and transformer lines.

They did this just a couple of weeks ago and then I started assembling the temporary utility pole. site now, some of the requirements for this area is that the post must be a minimum of four by four and must be a minimum of 14 feet long or longer. Now you can use a six by six or uh larger one, I guess if you wanted to, but it has to be mounted a minimum of 10 feet and a maximum of 25 feet away from the transformer pole. Now this one is in the middle. It's probably 18, 15, 18 feet or so and that's how this pole is currently set up.

You can also see that I have some additional reinforcements here. The pole needs to be guided and you know it's always good to have a little extra support on these to make sure it doesn't collapse. from the weather, head up on this particular post and that's why you want to assemble them sometimes offside and then set them up. It should extend above where the utility will be connected. You can also see the eyebolt running through it here. the pole through the 4x4 pole which is to give the utility company something to tie the wire to to help support the power lines so you want to make sure to include that as well now that the weather comes down.

Using a triplex cable I also have the conduit secured and at a few different points there are minimum requirements for how far you can be from the weather head and the meter base and you want to make sure you secure it accurately and here we can see our Triplex here we have both Hots as well as our neutral coming in through the base of the meter as well as here coming in here then we go into our main disconnect panel our main disconnect is right here and there should be for These panels within this area should have a minimum of 60 amps but we're a little bit above this, we've actually gone with the 100 amp panel that way we have a lot of room to play with and which one really is for temporary duty we don't really need much more than just being able to run some power tools that come here, our main is linked here, we also have our neutral tide here and something you have to remember that a lot of people overlook.

You should have the neutral attached within this area, it should be attached and you can see that we are attached here with this strap. We also have our ground rod over here, our bare ground coming down, it's also attached to the post and then it comes out. to the ground bars there must be a minimum of two ground bars for this area, the first ground bar cannot be closer than two feet away from the post and the other must be at least six feet away from that and They must be driven at all times. I know some areas may allow you when attempting the

service

to only go part of the way but in this area you must have the soil rotted completely, as you can see we have it here and a little trick is to soak the soil heavily before attempting to drive them, it does make it a little bit easier to put them in those are just some of the requirements for grounding this now once you've done all of that you can plug in your receptacle and if you're familiar with

electrical

work uh it should be a pretty simple thing to do. you should be a GFI that we have here it should be a weather resistant cover it should be a good protective cover to keep it from getting wet and then it's just our standard wiring that comes out with our feed our main wire to the 20 amp breaker then our ground of course will go to the ground bar as you can see there and then of course our neutral goes up to our neutral bar it's pretty straight forward you might want to talk to your inspector before When setting this up also talk with your utility company about any specific requirements they're going to have for you and that way make it a little bit easier for you rather than having to go back and redo something because you did it the way you needed to. until the first time you call them they are usually very friendly very helpful anyway guys hope you like the video.
