Day-Trippin' on the Baltic! How to Combine 2 of Europe's Finest Cities: Tallinn and Helsinki

Mar 19, 2024
The main reason I stayed so close to the port last night was so I could catch a ferry this morning and that's one of the best things about Talon being a city on the Baltic Sea. There are many small ferry routes you can take and today I am going to Helsinki. I'll be honest. I don't really know much about this, but I think it only takes me about two and a half hours to get to Finland and I love a little ferry ride, so let's see how. this is going today, nice harbor and if, like me, you love ferries, I can see one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, possibly eight, here at the moment, there are also some cruise ships, which is really good to see, but some of the ferry operators like it that way. inc, which I think is one of the best.

Their ships look almost as good as cruise ships. They really tried hard here for some reason. I didn't hire talent, although I chose Viking Line. I think it had to do with the schedules. for this trip but I'm sure it will be fine anyway, that's me, everything checked in, it was too easy and just looking at the departure board there I can see the reason I took the Viking line because it leaves at Las seven in the morning, that gives me a full day in Helsinki. The great talent would have left at 12.30 so I have been limited by time.

I'm just trying to get a closer look at these ships. I'm not sure. I'm meant to be here but soon someone will tell me here we go folks, wow this ship is pretty big to be fair, we'll have a proper look inside in a bit but of course to leave we'll go to the sun. cover, oh look there, how did the other half live the fancy things? No, Steve, we're going to throw you in there as soon as we look at you and right next to the bow of the ship, you can see the old town of Talon there and then the more modern center of the city.

On this side, I really love the access you have to the outside decks here, of course the more sensible people cross at 7am. m., they have just entered, they take the comfortable seats and will sleep throughout the trip, but since the tourists are outside. Yes, as tourists, we move, friends, later, I will be back at 11 p.m. m., as soon as they leave the port, it starts to get very cold, but luckily they have these little indoor and outdoor areas sailing around the magnificent Baltic. I've been looking forward to this moment, so as we pass the island, it's time for me to come in, so here we have the deck plan, the three lower decks are for vehicles only, so you have your cabin deck on deck six and then all the good stuff is happening on seven and eight now let's look at the look don't get me wrong the boat is really nice it's comfortable with everything you could need but it reminds me a lot. of the Dover to Cali routes since I used them years ago.

This is a big business created to transport many passengers on what is obviously a very lucrative route. It's all very nice, especially on a calm and relaxed crossing like today, but for me it's all. It just feels a bit soulless, let's continue our tour down, now down here, I imagine it would be a lot livelier on a peak night crossing because this is where you'll find all the bars and entertainment aft, there's even this like a cabaret thing. room where you'll find the live acts, but not this morning, then we headed towards where the real money is made, trust me, there's not much you can't buy on board this ship, but it all felt a bit like airport duty . free for me and I don't really like those places, although I get bonus points for stocking my favorite finished chocolate, but I preferred to find a quiet spot by the window for a coffee and a pastry.
Now we are halfway there, right in the middle. from the gulf of finland and very far away in this candid i know you can't see it on the camera but i can still see the tall talon buildings and if i look away i can almost make it

helsinki

in the distance and it looks like we're going too to pass by a cool lighthouse, so, all right, friends, welcome to Helsinki, welcome to Finland. I've been here once before and that was after a red-eye flight from New York. I just remember being there. absolutely exhausted and I was only here that day like today I'm again so it's not a city I know very well but I know roughly how to get around downtown but what we're going to do today is probably hop on some trams and go to a walk around try to go a little further hello so my plan today is to get one of these tram tickets to b and what it says there if you have a ticket to b abc abcd welcome aboard so the ferry is included I'm not I'm exactly sure where it's going but we could get on that later we just have to go down to see the train station it's absolutely beautiful so I jumped off the tram when I saw the stadium and I think that's the Olympic stadium we have.
There's another stadium up here that I don't know what it is, so let's go over Luke, okay, so let's finish with the national team, so this must be the football stadium. In fact, I wonder if we can take a little look inside the field. Yes, some trades are taking place. there and they look pretty good too, that could be the national team, right, let's go see this Olympic stadium, what a cool view of the football stadium. You couldn't do this in Scotland, although no one would pay again. I'll have a look at the tower and luckily there is an elevator.
This is worse than yesterday's lighthouse. Oh wow, yes. This is not scary at all. I didn't realize that we got to the top and the thing is that it is very narrow. I'm sure it's safe, but it's very narrow and that scares me, and it's a big, sturdy concrete structure, so it must be in my imagination that it sways a little. The Olympic stadium was opened in 1938 and then the Olympic Games were held here in 1952. Oh and there's yari lippmanen lit manon lippmann and that's where I am now, upstairs, time to come back down, hey, that was really cool and It remained standing for several decades, but I always think that the day it rises it will fall ready.
Let's get back on that tram and I just missed one. No. Approved by modern trams. The old ones are the best. When we get back to the city tomorrow we'll try to ride some of the proper old trams and central Helsinki is a beautiful and sunny place these days, but that's all the more reason to hop on that little boat and find out where it's going. I'm intrigued because life is a mystery in 2022 when you can't get your phone to work, all these people know that. Where have they been, let's find out, whip, all I know is that we are on an island and there are a lot of people sweeping everywhere, so this is the place we sailed by this morning.
I guess it's an old fort for defending

helsinki

we can just walk around anyway it will be nice to see even if like me you don't know anything about the place it's a great island for a little walk and it's included in your day ticket, i couldn't imagine it with lothian buses there is an example of something i went through as an alcoholic the boats in finland have access from the boat because there are thousands of little rocky islands in finland and they just sail straight to them bow first and that's where you get off the boat Look, YouTube is perfect for all that random information, right?
There is a toy museum. This place is getting more and more confusing. What's going on? Do people live here? I'm so confused, of course, the fact that your ferry ticket is included in like the bus ticket, it's like public transportation instead of being a museum island, it must just be an island community that makes sense, a random place, although even though the place feels so random and remote, I guess, with those little fairies coming and going around the bay every 20 minutes or so it would be like living in any city neighborhood, but you're on an island, well, there you go.
You have, I hope you enjoyed our excellent visit, let's get back to the ship right when we get back. this is the community church and it has something that is unique in the world at the top it has a light it is not just a church it is a lighthouse too in fact it is too cool to miss, let's get up and take a closer look if you miss the ferry, there will be another one and not only the cool church, but we also have the largest Finnish bell in Russia. This place is full of surprises.
It's a black beast. Ah, we're back on the ship after all, good job. We are always against the clock on this channel and it is a different setback. Do you know what I feel like? I'll make it easy for you with multiple options for you to drink beer while sitting outside in Finland. I have no idea. So I better drink it quick after my little beer. I went for a walk around the marina, where you'll find some examples of beautiful old traditional boats and, as you'll see in a moment, some pretty impressive modern ones, as well as these big boats.
There are icebreakers here, if you ever need a reminder of how cold it gets here in winter, check these guys out and they will clear a path across the frozen Baltic for other ships to pass through in winter. Incredibly big ships, so you're the reason I travel. Ah, just a little information. I forgot to mention that you can spend the night in one of the cabins on board if you prefer. The advantage would be being able to go to sleep as soon as you get on the boat. Helsinki, but they'll kick you out at Talon at 6 in the morning and I didn't fancy that.
I'm a little tired and hungry, so I'll see you in the morning on our last day and let's do something. A little more touristy morning folks I bought myself a little day trip pass it's time to be good to my legs for a change my phone still isn't working so I keep stopping by these little maps so you're here , a bit of brutalist architecture. Here I think we can walk along the coast past the prison and we will go to our first stop of the day which is the seaplane port sounds interesting come on friends this is incredible this large concrete structure was built for the Moscow Olympic games because the navigation Part of the Olympic Games was held here in the Baltic, in Talon, and I am very glad that it is still here.
I imagine one day they will tear it down and turn it into a soulless office building like this but for now we still have it and thank goodness for that as you can see most of it is closed now but you can still walk around the top of the structure. I wonder if this is protected by planning or something because it is prime real estate which I would hate. them to profit from this place I'm in brutalist paradise if you come on vacation with steve these are the kind of attractions you can expect can you see the beauty in this or am I alone let me know in the comments I guess?
This would have been where those Olympic athletes would have gotten into their little boats and gone racing in the Baltic Sea. This is fantastic. I could spend too much time here. Let's go along the coast. Come on, this way we will reach the grounds of the old prison. which is open to the public but I'm afraid not on Tuesdays and when the inmates were exercising in the yard if no one did there is an exit to freedom and that takes us nicely to the old seaplane hangar and the maritime museum which is right in front of us now what an amazing place I mean just by the exhibits it's really cool hello Russian submarine but the building itself I think steals the show I'll do my best to film here but the steps look steep and the entrance looks like very narrow.
I think it's fair to say that it would be as useful on a submarine as a wooden lighthouse. I know I'm not showing you the old town of Talon in this video, but um. I'm looking for some kind of viewpoint high above the city to have a good view. Check this out and as long as this street keeps going up, I'm sure we'll find something. This is truly one of the most beautiful

cities

I have ever known. seen but boy, it's easy to get lost here I move streets no, no, it's not this way maybe hello here we go in a kind of roundabout I found a small observation platform that I was looking for and this will give us a nice view over the city and the city walls, so it's a tough sight to beat with a world-friendly seagull.
Now we're going to head over to that tower over there because I think it has an observation deck too, bye buddy and just when I was looking. Going down the stairs towards the city, I found another viewpoint that is probably better. It gives you a much better impression of the city walls and all the red roofs. Look at this, and for such a beautiful place in the city there is nowhere very busy. This map doesn't work the next tower will have a lot of steps to the top I was hoping I could tell you I'm sorry it's closed what can I do but unfortunately no it's open oh uh oh that wasn't easy it's very narrow.
Here, oh, I don't like this at all. It was great, but not as cool as the other viewing platform. I thought it was better and not because it was free, but in my opinion it offered slightly better views of the city. very tight up there I wouldn't like to be there when there are a lot of people that's for sure a well deserved beer greetings guys right I only have a higher placeto show you that luckily it doesn't require climbing stairs I'll see you there in a moment so here we are on Teleturn it's the tallest building in Estonia and in fact I think it might be taller than the tallest hill in Estonia so that this could be the highest point in all of Estonia in the United States.
Up there, let's go. Inside the platform it's not that scary even for someone like me who is terrified of heights, but I think you can go outside. Well, I think it's up here. I'm a little weird with heights, please let me know in the comments if you're the same with us, but my fear hasn't really been at the top. He's dropping something from the edge, I don't know. Whether that's a rational fear or not, but the fact that it has this ledge around the corner that goes out further, I'm totally fine. I couldn't do that, so there's a nice cafe-restaurant here too, but it's not for me when I'm alone, so that's us, folks.
I hope you enjoyed my week-long trip to the Baltic. Sorry, it wasn't a Scotland video this week, but I'm sure we'll have one of Those again very soon in the meantime, as always, take care and we'll see you soon. Goodbye, I couldn't come to tandy and here we are climbing the famous Tondi stairs. Sorry, this is just a little fanboy bonus for those of you who don't see Baldwin bankrupt, this won't mean anything to you. I'm sorry.
