Brian Cox explains quantum mechanics in 60 seconds - BBC News

Apr 07, 2024
Brian Cox, without hesitation, repetition or deviation, could you explain as succinctly as possible? I have a stopwatch here, the rules of

quantum

mechanics

, your time starts now. Well, the most basic version I know of is Fan's version, which essentially says that particles are particles. and they jump from one place to another with a particular probability and the probability that a particle that is somewhere will be somewhere different later is given by a very simple rule, it uses a quantity called action which has to do with mass . of the particle and the time and the distance uh and you then basically calculate these small quantities uh that have to do with something called action and the sums so if I start with an electron in the corner of the room and say what is the probability of that at some later time it will be somewhere else, then at each point in the room you can assign a probability that it will be there at a later point with a simple rule and that's it, now it's called the

quantum

mechanics

path integral formulation that underlies to everything else you can, you can get the rest from there, so it's a simple rule that says what is the probability that the particles move from A to B, that's it, I'll stop the stopwatch and then all right , less than a minute.
