The

town

of Barrow, Alaska, is isolated in eighty miles of roadless wilderness. Once a year they spend thirty

days

of winter in complete darkness, known as "the polar night." Near

this

town

, the Stranger arrives on a boat and, after spotting a spooky ship in the distance, heads to Barrow. Outside Barrow, Sheriffs Eben and Billy find a pile of burned phones buried in the snow, which doesn't seem like a joke. They also take the opportunity to contemplate the last sunset they will have in a month. In the city, people are preparing to hibernate or leave on the next plane.

Because everyone is so busy, they don't notice that a mysterious figure sneaks into the local pound and kills all the snowdogs there. Back with the sheriffs, they stop to check on Beau, whose bulldozer is leaking gas from all the snow. Eben is about to fine him when they receive a radio message reporting the dogs' deaths. Meanwhile, Stella, Eben's ex-wife, finishes her work and takes her car to the airport. In the middle of the road, she is suddenly hit by a bulldozer which destroys her car. Stella can't wait to be towed and asks Eben for help, but Eben uses the excuse of having to work to avoid her and sends Billy to pick her up.

Billy takes Stella to the airport as quickly as possible, but they still don't arrive on time, so now Stella will have to stay in Barrow for a month. Back at Eben, she looks at the dogs and finds a complete slaughter, but the owners, Ally and John, can't think of anyone who would hate them so much. Eben then returns to the police station, where his grandmother Helen and his brother Jake work with him. They receive a message from the utilidor reporting some vandalism, so Even goes to check it out. Carter and Wilson explain that someone destroyed their helicopter, which is usually kept under lock and key.

Meanwhile, at the cell tower, Gus hears some strange noises outside and goes to check them out, only to notice the lights go out. Suddenly, a group of mysterious figures surround him, but before Gus can react, these people jump on him and kill him for food; Turns out they are

Meanwhile, a group of pipeline workers are finishing their day when suddenly one of them is dragged into the darkness. A few seconds pass before the worker's body falls into the snow, causing his friend to run away in panic. The third worker is frozen in fear and the

take the opportunity to surround him. Back at the station, Eben tries to figure out how the Stranger snuck into town from him, but the man refuses to answer. Suddenly, the Internet goes out and when Eben tries to call Gus, he discovers that the phone lines are also cut. At that moment, the entire town also loses power and the Stranger announces that "they" are coming.

Eben goes to the cell tower to find out what's going on and finds a trail of blood which he follows until he discovers Gus' head. Horrified, Eben runs back into town and drives to tell all the citizens to stay inside. If they don't have a generator, then they should hide in the restaurant. At John's house, Ally is preparing dinner when suddenly a vampire bursts through the window and drags her out of it. John hears her scream and goes to save her with her rifle, but when she gets close enough, the vampire claws to keep him away from her.

Unwilling to give up, John tries again and even manages to grab Ally's hand, but the vampire is stronger and takes her away. At the station, the Stranger continues talking about how the end of everyone is approaching. Jake gets upset and throws a piece from his game, but

Jake immediately goes to retrieve the piece and the Stranger takes the opportunity to attack him, but at that moment Eben arrives and shoots the Stranger in the arm. He then handcuffs the man to the cell door to interrogate him, but the Stranger's only response is that they will all die.

Eben asks Helen and Jake to say inside while he and Stella look for the criminal. After a few minutes of driving, Eben stops the car because he saw something, but when Stella checks it with her binoculars, she freaks out and urges Eben to get back in the car. The couple tries to escape, but a vampire suddenly jumps on top of the car and Eben shoots at him, achieving absolutely nothing. Helen radios them for help and they rush back to the station, but it's too late. Helen and Jake are gone, leaving only a trail of blood behind. The Stranger is still in the cell complaining that "they" didn't take him and asks Eben to help him end things. Eben actually considers killing him, but Stella stops him. Meanwhile, the vampires gather in the city to listen to their leader Marlow. He reminds them that it is important to remove the heads of their victims to prevent them from becoming vampires too. He also wishes he had come to this town sooner because the constant darkness is perfect for them.

The vampires then go on a killing spree across the city, mercilessly feeding on anyone they can get their hands on. A horrified group of survivors gather at the restaurant and all share the same experience: their bullets did nothing. Eben and Stella arrive and are relieved to see that Jake is okay, but unfortunately Helen did not survive. The group discusses their options and Carter suggests hiding in the utilidor, but that is too risky because he is too far away. A woman points out that her neighbor has an attic with a hidden pull-down ladder and that the house was boarded up before the owner left.

Eben asks Carter to lead the group to that house while he and Stella distract the vampires. The two drive around the city to act as bait and the plan works, soon a group of vampires grab their car and try to attack them through the windows. Eben manages to kill one of them by aiming for the head, but Marlow takes her gun and the car flips over. The vampires immediately catch up with Stella and Eben again, but just then, Beau appears in his bulldozer and runs over the enemy. Eben and Stella rush to join him in the vehicle and drive away rather quickly until they reach the house with the attic, which is incredibly well hidden as promised.

Eben tells the group that they will sleep in shifts and ration their food, that they have a good chance of surviving because they are used to the polar night unlike their enemy. Meanwhile, Marlow and Iris visit the Stranger at the station. They congratulate the man for doing his job perfectly and promise to convert him, but when Marlow hugs the Stranger, he kills him. Six

pass and the survivors manage to stay safe and sound in the attic, although they sometimes have to deal with Wilson's father, Isaac, who dreams about his wife, who died years ago. One night, they hear noises outside and Stella looks through a hole and discovers that vampires are ransacking the neighboring houses.

Some of the survivors want to leave before they get caught, and when Stella and Eben point out that it's too risky, an argument ensues. Eben calms everyone down and reminds them that they are part of the team before accepting the fact that the vampires are too close. They need to escape to gather supplies from the store and hide in the utilidor, but they'll need some cover, so they agree to try when the next blizzard hits. On the seventh day, the group hears Kristen walking through the streets asking for help. Eben notices that the vampires keep jumping her over the rooftops, which means she is being used as bait.

The survivors insist on helping her, so Eben leaves her and discovers that John is also out there, hiding under a house. Kristen is her priority and Eben asks John to wait, but unfortunately this distraction means that Eben doesn't arrive in time and the vampires begin to attack Kristen before she jumps in to feed on her. With the vampires distracted, Eben goes to save John, but as soon as she takes him out, she notices that John is also

turning

into a vampire. Eben tries to talk to him, but John becomes enraged and attacks, pushing Eben into a swing that traps him in its chains.

Fortunately, there is an ax nearby that Eben uses to defend himself, allowing him to kill John with a few precise hits. She then runs Eben back into the house, where she collapses due to an asthma attack. Outside, Marlow finds John's body and takes it as a clue that someone is nearby. Moments later, it is Stella's turn to be on guard, and Isaac takes advantage of the fact that she falls asleep to leave the basement. Stella and Wilson hear the door and immediately go after him, convincing him to try walking into town is a terrible idea. Isaac cries because he believes his wife will not survive and goes to the bathroom.

Suddenly thuds are heard from the roof, Eben looks out the window and confirms not only that the vampires are gone, but that it is also snowing heavily. Using the wind and snow as cover, the survivors head to the local store to gather as many supplies as they can carry. Suddenly they hear a noise and, to their horror, find a vampire girl feeding on a body. The survivors run to look for Eben, but when he approaches with his axe, the girl is gone. Eben continues looking around her and the girl comes out of the shadows to attack him, making him drop the axe.

The rest of the group quickly comes to his aid, grabbing the girl and pinning her against the wall for Jake to kill her with the axe, a task that leaves him deeply traumatized. The survivors prepare to leave, but discover that it has stopped snowing, so they will have to wait inside the tent for another blizzard to arrive. On the eighteenth, Eben points out that they must leave because the vampires will soon arrive in this area. The utilidor is still too far away to reach without cover, so they agree to go to the police station, but they need a distraction.

Eben joins the others at the station, but her meeting is interrupted when Carter reveals that he was bitten by the girl at the store while she was being restrained.

Carter lost his family in a car accident and has wanted to end things for a while but never dared, now he finally has a reason to ask for help. Eben hates doing this, but knows it's for his own safety, so she takes Carter to another room to kill him while everyone listens. On the twenty-seventh, they notice a light coming from a neighboring house. Eben and Stella go to check it out and are shocked to find Billy next to the bodies of his family after he killed them to save them from vampires. He also wanted to end things himself, but the gun jammed.

However, instead of going to the girls, Billy runs in another direction scared and catches the attention of another vampire.

Eben manages to run safely to the utilidor and rejoins the others, but becomes worried when he notices that Stella and Gail have not arrived yet. Meanwhile, Marlow gathers the vampires and reminds them that humans shouldn't know they're real, which means it's very important to find all the survivors and kill them all. Back at the utility room, Billy arrives without knowing anything. The vampire is following him. The beast bites Billy and the group quickly goes to help him when they hear the screams. This vampire is stronger and manages to overpower Eben, almost throwing him into the metal crusher.

Billy jumps on the creature and pushes it first into the pinwheel, effectively killing it but also losing his arms in the process. To make matters worse, Billy is starting to change, so Eben has no choice but to kill him too. On the thirtieth, the survivors begin to celebrate that the sun will soon rise. Eben finally manages to contact Stella via walkie-talkie and she explains that she and Gail are hiding under a nearby car. Eben looks out the window and sees that they are surrounded by vampires, so he asks Stella to wait under the car until morning and they can watch the sunrise together.

However, the vampires are tired of waiting and used the oil that Beau's bulldozer spilled all over the city to start a fire. If Stella and Gail stay under the car, they will be burned, but if they get out, they will be killed. A desperate Eben realizes that a human cannot win this fight, so he uses a syringe to draw some of Billy's blood and injects it into his own body. As Eben begins to spin, the others wonder if they should kill him, but Jake, crying, protects Eben's brother. Eben hugs Jake goodbye and then heads out to challenge Marlow to a one-on-one fight.

Marlow agrees and begins beating Eben easily, but this distraction gives Stella and Gail the chance to escape. Eben's body continues to change as he is pulverized, and as Marlow is about to deliver the final blow, Eben's eyes turn black. He uses his newfound full vampiric strength to hit Marlow's head with such force that he kills him instantly. Having lost their leader, the other vampires flee, but Eben does not go after them because it is almost dawn. Stella realizes that the sunlight will also affect Eben, so she takes him to the top of the hill. The couple share a final kiss as the sun rises and turns Eben to ashes in Stella's arms.
