Buckle up, let's jump right in. Also stay tuned for the graphics at the end, as usual they are super fun, so Samsung Galaxy S, this is the first one in the summer of 2010 and yes, it clearly looks old with the classic four capacitive buttons. on the bottom Android .1 and there is a micro USB port on the top next to the headphone jack but I feel like from the beginning you can see Samsung differentiating themselves here first of all this is a reasonable screen this is a screen 4 inch and it's an AMOLED screen made by Samsung, so that's a big deal these days, you could see a significant difference in battery life simply if you set a wallpaper with a lot of black because the pixels did not have to light up on the screen.
OLED and that was a new concept back then, it also only has a 1500 mAh battery so every saving you can get means a lot and of course this was back in the day when you could remove the back of any phone and just take it. dead battery change it at any time have two batteries if you want to change them in and out very quickly while the others are charging we will witness the death of this feature during this video but then using this phone now is fine obviously it feels slow but in It's not really slow or unresponsive, it's just slow, like there's a lot of solids waiting for something to happen, especially heavier things like the web browser or opening the camera, you just have to slow it down a bit and give it a second.
This launched with what at the time was the fastest graphics processing of any smartphone thanks to a Samsung-made chip inside, and speaking of cameras, it launched with a single 5-megapixel camera on the back that It was capable of recording 720p video out of the box. Ask for a memory card to do a lot of things, like record videos, because it only comes with two or 4 gigs of storage, but there is an expandable Micro SD card storage slot on the back of the phone so you can access it directly. at 32 gigs from the beginning, so I never used one of these phones, but what I like most about it now is that it already has a modern shape, it has flat sides and a flat back, there are no bumps on the camera, huh .
There is actually a small bulge in the plastic above the rear-facing speaker because it was common to place the phone on a table or something and without that bulge it would block the speaker, so that bulge is literally just to keep the speaker open. you can always hear your sound now, you remember what I was saying, Samsung will try anything that has been true since the first one like this, the first Galaxy S released with, like I said, over a dozen variants, so you might recognize This is like the Samsung Galaxy S Stratosphere and you can tell because this is the one with the little Verizon seal on the forehead, but you may have had the Samsung Galaxy S Vibrant, that's what it would be called if you got the variant made for T-Mobile or the Samsung Galaxy S Epic 4G, which is what they call the one that was launched at Sprint.
Now in hindsight it honestly seems like this was Samsung's way of avoiding carrier exclusives because they basically made a slightly different version of this phone for every carrier in America with a little bit different design and a little bit different features just Samsung only Samsung did not know that this would be the beginning of a whole empire, so the sequel, the first sequel is a second generation Samsung Galaxy S2, can teach you a lot, so right away a couple of things: this phone It's not noticeably bigger or noticeably fancier than the first Galaxy S and these were back in the days when the percentage was increasing year after year and some of the things they did were crazy on paper.
Thus it went from a 1 GHz chip to a 1.2 GHz dual-wire chip, making it just over double the processing power. It also went from a 4-inch screen to a 4.3-inch screen. Go from a 5 megapixel 720p camera to an 8 megapixel camera. the rear shoots 1080p, doubled the RAM to a gbyte, increased to a 1,650 mAh battery and the amount of base storage, I guess you would say, increased from 2 gigs to 16 and did all that in a phone that became more thin and also added NFC so it added parts and now this is an 8 and 2mm phone so it is one of the thinnest phones in the world at the time it came out.
Now the starting price has also gone up a lot from $3.99. at $5.49, but this phone was relatively successful. About 3 million units were sold in the first 2 months. It was definitely the first one to pop up on my radar. I never owned one of these phones, but I definitely saw it and thought about it. but then this next one, the Galaxy S3 in 2012, this is the first Samsung Galaxy S that I actually owned and I remember loving it. I also remember it well. The jump up and size again was very real, so it goes up to a 4.8. In phones now, believe it or not, they are starting to push the limits of what people considered an appropriate phone size because I remember back then there were a lot of phones that reached exactly 4.65 inches, like that was a screen popular telephone.
The size for big phones at the time and anything close to 5 inches felt weird as a tablet size and here's Samsung's flagship pushing 4.8 inches of screen and then the four capacitor buttons on the front are now only three buttons, the search button is gone. so it's a home button which is a physical button with a back button on the right and a menu on the left and this is also the first time we have a voice assistant on the phone and they called it SVO smart. I know this is a pretty direct response to We just announced Siri on the iPhone last year, but you know, S Voice for Samsung, they use S for a lot of other things too.
S Notes, so Samsung Voice. S Voice Now. S Voice wasn't good, but neither were any of them. the other voice assistants that were coming out, so it's mostly just people snooping around asking you to do random things, just weathering things like that, what turned out to be a lot more significant with this phone is just this super sleek design, everything has shape. like a thin pebble that you could probably skip across a lake, it's inspired by nature, the whole OS leaned on the fact that it had a bunch of water drop sounds everywhere, the lock screen went from swipe to unlock to drag your finger through the water like it's a A pretty strong topic for them, but I remember using this phone and

reviewing

it.
This is for me in college. I loved it, it was also received very well and the combination of being super thin and fast and having a huge OLED and S Voice it had it. Starting to be touted as the iPhone killer, um, but I think the most interesting thing is that they thought this phone was big enough to justify an S3 Mini because this is a 4.8-inch screen, like I said, kind of gigantic, so what they came out with was one with 4 inches. show the Galaxy S3 Mini at the same time because of course they did, but the following year we got the Samsung Galaxy S4, which was the start of a lot of things.
How do I feel like the fourth generation of any major new product is what defines this? This is no exception of course, they are still taking giant steps on paper with specs because these little pocket computers are becoming more and more capable of everything they do, so they go from a 4.8 screen in 720p to being one of the first telephones. with a 5 in 1080P display in the era of a lot of new retina displays aiming for the best pixel density, they also had a variation from dual core processors from 1.4 to 1.9 GHz, again doubled the RAM of 1 to 2.
GB and that single rear camera went from 8 megapixels to 13 megapixels, so this is the first time you can take 1080p videos from the Galaxy S camera and then view them on the 1080p screen on the front of the Galaxy S. goes from a 2000 mAh battery to a still removable 2600 mAh battery. A 30% increase is pretty crazy, but again they're still aiming for one day of battery life, which has been a topic for a long time. Yes, these things are getting more and more powerful. every year and they are doing more and more things but as long as you can hit a day of battery life they seem to be fine with that now if you want more proof that Samsung is just testing a lot of things this phone had a lot of random functions. some of them are actually kind of interesting because they feel like today's AI features, so this is the phone that tried smart scrolling with head tracking, so when you're reading something you can tilt your head forward and backward to scroll. through the page is crazy it had smart rotation so this is really cool if you have auto rotate on but you are looking at the screen while reading something and then you turn to the side it won't rotate the screen it will keep it on the side right up Smart Pause is fun you're watching a video you look away from the screen it will automatically pause you look back it will play again so there are a lot of things like this some stick some don't work well but this was also partially used to justify another increase in the price of this phone, so the S4 at launch.
I don't know if you remember this. It launched at $650. This is also the first time that Samsung made an active version of the phone, so another variant, the Galaxy S4. Galaxy S4 Active, so it added IP67 certification and a more rugged design, was a TFT LCD screen instead of AMOLED and swapped out a few other small downgrades for similar physical buttons and a slightly thicker phone with some flaps to cover the ports. which actually wasn't a huge success, although this was one of the first major incidents where a Samsung phone battery swelled and burned on someone, now it didn't happen to many people, it wasn't enough to become a great success.
Trend, but it's something to remember for the future that portends now, when we get to the Galaxy S5, Samsung is starting tospeed up. I think with the Galaxy S another big increase in the battery now it's up to 2800 milliamp hours and another big increase in the screen. up to 5.1 inches diagonally and across the board, this is uh, I think it's a flagship in all dimensions, mention that it's a 2.7 GHz processor in some variants, okay, 2 to 3 gigs of RAM, up to 32 gigs of storage and it's a 16-megapixel camera that now records 4K video and the bottom left button has been converted from a menu button to a multitasking button to match the three main buttons needed to operate Android, but It also says a lot about what he's capable of, but of course along with all that. it's absolute classic Samsung, they just try things and I think the telltale sign of these things is when you see them try it for a generation only to throw it at the wall and see what sticks and then it disappears the next year like they added this. a little sensor here next to the camera flash on the back which is a heart rate sensor so you can measure your heart rate connects to S Health which didn't last long.
They also added this weird texture for the first time to this plastic backing which you know, made it a little softer, yes, but also made it totally look like a Band-Aid, and it even came in this flesh color that didn't last very long either. They also added a fingerprint reader to the home button. Fun fact these days where you actually had to swipe your entire finger across the home button to read it, of course the fingerprint readers have stayed there but you don't have to swipe anymore so that's improved significantly and you can see this weird port at the bottom here.
The Galaxy S5 has sort of Basically a dual port could be used like a regular micro USB for charging, but if you wanted full USB 3.0 data speeds there was a special double ended cable you could plug in to use all the pins and get those kind of weird things that didn't stay around for long either, plus there was a flap on the bottom of all these phones for water resistance and they were very easy to drop and this one fell naturally too. They also launched an active version and a separate sports version of this phone. along with the regular Galaxy S5, of course, they did.
The Samsung Galaxy S6 came out in 2015, but the truth is that this was the beginning of a new era for Samsung phones. You can look at it and see it. This is when they entered the modern era to improve. Worse yet, this phone was the first with an all-glass back instead of plastic, which did make it its first non-removable back. All the outrage in the comments of every YouTube video at the time, but they also added wireless charging and they fell. These metal rails and metal buttons on the sides felt much more solid than all the plastic we were working with on all the previous flagships and this phone is sleek in footprint, literally the same size as an iPhone 15 Today's pro. but turn it on its side and it's one of the slimmest phones ever thanks to having a 2550 mAh battery.
Yes, it's actually smaller than last year. This is a recipe that especially angers foodies when it backs down. It's not cool, so you heard this was. from a 2800 battery to a 2500 milliamp battery and it is no longer removable and it also does not have the micro SD card to expand its storage and on top of that, technically you also went from that strange USB 3.0 to USB 2.0, but apart from that this is still It feels like your first truly modern piece of hardware. This is also the first time we are getting a 1440p AMOLED display. It's incredibly sharp.
We haven't seen a higher resolution since and it's also the first Galaxy S Flagship with Optical Image Stabilization on the main camera, so this is a really big camera upgrade and it was the first Galaxy S Flagship to use 64 processing. bits. I remember there was a lot of positive reception around this phone, obviously due to it being well built in metal. and glass now and has good features and is generally the same price as last year. I feel like there was something that was stopping it, especially the critical reviewers of Among Us, from being the best Android phone available at the time and its name was TouchWiz.
See, around this time there were also other Android options for big enthusiasts, like the Nexus 6p and 5x, which were stock Android, and then there was the HT C1 M9 just down the street with its own HTC software. LG G4 came out with its own software, it's like all Androids. The device scene right now when it comes out is like what are the specs, what are the features, what is the design and then what is the Android skin that you have to deal with to get it now. Touchwiz has gotten better over time, you know a little bit.
It sounds less natural, but it's still absolutely a skin on top of Android rather than being super integrated into Android itself, which can make performance feel a little sluggish and may slow down how quickly updates arrive on this phone. over time because they have to go through Samsung, but it gives you a ton of extra features in return. So at that point, if you go back and look at my videos on phones right now, I always preferred stock OEM Android, straight from Google, they're always the fastest updates and it just felt cleaner and more consistent where Samsung TouchWiz just had this Colorful cartoon looking, this feeling, it was a little messy, but it had the features it had.
What mattered anyway with the S6, they also tested a little thing called S6 Edge. and Edge Plus because this war was being fought at that time, every time you saw a keynote with an announcement of a new smartphone, they always mentioned the screen-to-body ratios and therefore each flagship, if it could improve the best number, always boasted on the screen. Body ratio is how thin your bezels are and the best phones at the time were around 70%, meaning 70% of the front of the device is screen and the higher that number, the cooler the phone looks. , so this S6 Edge appeared and it is another.
A bit of innovation from Samsung is just trying a few things, but they literally bend the OLED screen to the edges of the phone and use curved glass to make it look like the screen bleeds over the edges of the device, hence the name edge, obviously there is still it was a bezel, but it worked, it looked really cool, uh, this actually came up at the beginning, when they originally tested it on the Galaxy Note, that they had it on the side of the screen, which are like software tickers that literally put like a The stock indicator on the side of the phone they would try anything to see if it worked and when it did they put it on both halves and now it's on the Galaxy S and it felt like the flagship so this phone went up to a 76 %. screen-to-body ratio with the S6 Edge Plus, this is starting to feel like the top of a flagship line, now the Galaxy S7 was kind of an incremental year between, you know, holding it now you can tell they didn't really feel the need to changes too much like it's the same size, same screens and resolutions, same storage sizes, up to 128 gigs, and they actually brought back expandable storage by popular demand, so I guess you can convince Samsung to do a few things and yet you can't take this back. thing, but they went ahead and added a Micro SD card slot in the SIM card tray, which is smart, but I think what they really realized this year are two things: one, you can really fit a lot of batteries in these things and two The Edge. it's the flagship people love the edge people love the screen that melts into the sides so they're going to do a lot more so the regular S7 was great but the S7 Edge had a 3000 mAh and the S7 Edge Plus had a 3600 mAh battery and then the S7 active had a 4000 milliamp battery, but for reference this is also the same year the Galaxy Note 7 came out so you may remember the issues that affect the phone and its 3500 mAh battery, the exact problem, the reason.
The reason the Note 7s started exploding and having dangerous battery issues was specifically a design issue with using a thin separator between two electrodes in a battery. It was simply damaged too easily and there were wild reactions when that damage occurred on as many doors as we did. I've had for smartphones like Ben Gate, you name it, this has to be the biggest PR disaster in the history of smartphones. I think by far people this was banned on airplanes. People would just ask if you have a Samsung phone like me. I don't think you want to carry that on the plane, it was literally recalled all over the world, they recalled them all, they couldn't sell it anymore, it's a big problem and honestly a lot of tech companies would never recover from that, but Samsung in this moment. was established enough, they were big enough, they were trying enough new things to be able to weather that storm, which is impressive, so Samsung Galaxy S8, this is one of my favorite phones, they added a lot of things to this now still classic phone .
Samsung released an absolute metric. a lot of stuff on the wall to see what sticks next. I definitely didn't love all the things they tried, but I love that they were trying things and they tried so many things that these phones feel like a world apart, so, first of all, there. It was an S8 and an S8 plus and they both have fully curved Edge screens, so Samsung realized that this advantage is very, very well received and they can continue to promote their huge screen-to-body ratios, plus they have refined the its EDG screen apps, it's subtle.
It's out of the way, but useful for those who want to take advantage of it, so they also tested this new pressure sensitive layer under the screen, right around the home button, so that the screen can always respond to pressures in this area, no matter where you are. While the screen is off now, this is also as you may have guessed at the time when Apple was testing 3D Touch or Force Touch on the iPhone and both of them didn't last long, but they tried and also tested a little higher. narrower 18 1 12 by 9 aspect ratio which actually kept the screen size constantly growing so it was quite accessible as they also went from capacitive buttons under the screen to all on screen buttons so now Let's talk about the screen-to-body ratio as we really are. cooking, they also switched to USBC for the first time, very easy win, people are asking for that last year anyway, but then with that they also tried this thing called Dex, which is like if you plug that USBC port into the monitor of a computer, you get all this.
Computer user interface that simply uses the phone as a trackpad and you may have noticed the extra button here on the left side, a curious fact in the entire history of every Samsung Galaxy S, until now they have always had the button lit on the right. The left side volume rocker is on the left side and that's still true here but they added a button below the volume rocker and yes that's the Bixby button so Bixby is the new voice assistant that replaces SVO on Samsung phones and Samsung really leaned in hard. With this one, not only do you get a dedicated button to activate it all the time, but the camera now also has Bixby Vision, which is like a weirdly specific competitor to the Google Lens and Samsung is really leaning into the whole AI assistant. thing for the first time and I would say with mixed success, this time they also tried a fingerprint reader on the back of the phone as there is no home button anymore, I love it and then they also tried this snap-on plastic keyboard which I think Honestly, it might be in my top five worst smartphone accessories of all time, but even after all that, I think the biggest or most impactful decision for this phone for the Galaxy S8 was its choice to use Qualcomm Snapdragon chips in some regions and Samsung's own. exos chips in other regions now at the time or even in hindsight, this was a pretty smart move, maybe even ahead of its time because Samsung is doing well, we want to make our own chips for our phones so we can maximize efficiency. and we want all the power and things we do on our phones to be built by us and also not give so much money to Qualcomm while we're at it, but also in hindsight this failed spectacularly, it was like an ongoing process.
What they really wanted to do, but since they didn't go for all the exos from the beginning, they split it up. They had some exos and some snapdragons. Snapdragon phones would be consistent with L and would regularly outperform the exos version of theSame phone across the board. better performance better efficiency better battery better heat it literally got to the point where potential buyers were jumping on subreddits and forums to try to find where they could import a Qualcomm version of the phone instead of the xnos available in their own country and there are plenty of tutorials on , if you are buying one second hand, how do you know which version you are getting just based on the serial number, so you can avoid the exos version, as I said in retrospect, a little before its time here. but a big backfire, however, there were so many other things so new about this phone that it justified another increase in price up to $750, which are current prices, so Galaxy S9.
I'm going to say this was the ultimate Samsung Galaxy S. I loved this

galaxy

. S9 and again it was Galaxy S9 and S9 plus now this was a relatively incremental upgrade versus S8 but you know, slightly thinner bezels, same RAM, same storage but slightly improved processor. Nice colors. I like these colors and then they also moved the fingerprint sensor on the back, from right next to the camera to right below the camera, otherwise, you know, it's basically the same, but then they had to try a few things , so this time they tried this dual aperture thing with the camera and it was super cool, you could basically take photos between f1.5 wide open and f2.4 a variable aperture on a smartphone is a clever little thing that would allow you to receive the as much light as possible in low light situations, but when you have a lot of light it would stop at 2.4 and focus more, it would be a sharper and better looking photo and I remember loving it when I used it.
Other reviewers loved it when they used it and then it disappeared from the next Samsung phone. We missed this, bring it back, but honestly this. It's one of those phones that take it back now, as I've talked about this before, if you could take back any old phone design from any year and just modernize it with new specs and new software, I think between HTC1 M8 or M9 and this phone is Pretty good candidates, this is stylish, it's a great size, it's a 1440p OLED USB type still has a headphone jack obviously the fingerprint reader is in a good place, it's a really great overall package and I said it in my original review in 2018.
Now it's still Samsung software, yes, but at this point there are so many features included here that the usefulness is undeniable and yes, people are totally willing to live with it as long as you know what you're getting into with a Samsung. Fun phone fact: This is also the year Samsung introduced the Galaxy Home, a small grill-shaped Weber speaker designed to be an AI assistant in your home with Bixby. It's been about 2000 days since that announcement, nothing has been heard since then, I don't think. has been officially cancelled, maybe they just want us to forget about it so Samsung can graduate I think this could be argued as well as the Samsung Galaxy S10 as now they've basically gone full screen to the point where reviews are complaining about the last millimeters of the forehead and chin, as if you see that the chin is just a little. a little bigger, but yes, at the top we've gone up to the earpiece and the selfie camera now has a cutout in the top right corner, giving rise to a whole new genre of meme wallpapers.
The screen-to-body ratio is close to 9.0%. Now we're basically just looking at Samsung's best-in-class 1440p AMOLED and not much else, and now these phones have become irreversibly big. The S10 has a 6.1 inch screen and the S10 plus would have a tablet size of 6.4, 10 years ago. Original but really bringing us into the Modern Era, this is the first Samsung phone with more than one camera on the back and, in true Samsung fashion, they just jump straight to three, obviously, so there's a main camera, a 2X telephoto lens and 5x a0 ultra-wide phones. It will never look the same after this point, all phones so far have had just that little bump on the camera, just a little circle or oval on the back, but as soon as you open this box you will never look again, the cameras They are now a feature on the back of a phone and you will also notice that there is no fingerprint reader on the back of this phone because this is also the first one where they tested that ultrasonic fingerprint reader under the glass of the phone. screen and they practically succeeded.
From the beginning, I remember testing it and seeing if it worked underwater and if it scratched at all, it was fine. It hasn't really improved much since these days, so it seems like they made it, they still use it, but What perhaps brought this phone into the era of modern smartphones could simply be the price, which is why Samsung has been releasing a a lot of stuff against the wall for years and now they just built this whole line but the S10 starts at $900 when it comes out and then they have the S10 Plus which starts at th000, they also had an S10 5G which was an even bigger version and more expensive phone with a larger battery to support 5G radios because 5G is flourishing in This time, expensive phones.
I think that's why one of my favorite new releases around this time was this new little thing they made called the s10e and this thing, you know, it's not quite a mini, but this is where Samsung made a couple of little ones. cuts. decisions to separate the true flagship from something a little cheaper, so for $750 you get a slightly smaller, slower charging battery and a fingerprint reader with power button instead of the ultrasonic bottom screen, but honestly it's probably a better deal than the flagships it was. cons now let's move on to the next Galaxy s20 and no we're not skipping any phones here basically 2020 is the year Samsung decided they were going to sync the calendar year with the phone year so we have the s20. in 2020, I'm sure that has nothing to do with the fact that the number was always slightly behind the FL flagship iPhone, but now this galaxy s20 looks blank, boring and soulless, which happened like this It feels like this is a completely blank phone, like you put it on. the S10 next to the s20 and then not jumping too far forward, but it seems like the S21 took a year off with the s20, like this is the most generic phone ever.
To be fair, there are other phones that have seemed like this and again, this is Samsung's flagship for years and we know they're going to start playing it safe, but in hindsight this is pretty boring and also happens to be the first Galaxy S from the beginning on moving the volume control. on the right side, that's a choice, it's also the first to not say the model number on the back with the text simply blank and it's also the first Galaxy S to follow in the iPhone's footsteps after making fun of them. and removing the headphone jack is also an option now.
I love that this was officially the first Galaxy S Flagship with a 120 Herz display and they actually moved the smaller punch-hole camera to the top center and it was the first to be able to record 8K video, so it's still gaining capabilities, isn't it? The ball hasn't moved on at all with this phone, but probably the most interesting dynamic is what was happening at the top of the line. This is the first year of the Ultra phone so the s20 is still a regular th000 phone but they also decided to make a gigantic phone with as many numbers as possible and the 10 highest specs possible and make it an Ultra and this was kind of a fight at the top of the lineup with the Galaxy Note because up to this point you know, they tried a lot of things and ended up having this particularly successful high-end phone with a stylus that if you wanted even more than the S could offer, you could buy a Galaxy Note, so this phone in this year, like its design, was simply forgotten until later in the year when they released The Fan Edition, the Fe of the same phone cut a couple of things and removed 1080p, like one or two features, $700 and this phone was a Great deal, this is my phone of the year, but it's also a fun fact, not so fun.
This galaxy s20 also started to swell like the battery started to bulge to the point where it pushes the back of the phone out of the chassis through the glue so I'll just say I've had a lot of smartphones in the studio obviously we review a lot phones and we've basically had a large sample of smartphones in long-term storage and the only brand that has had more than one. The smartphone whose battery swells like a balloon to the point where we have to get rid of it is Samsung, but then it was the year 2021 and Samsung launches the Galaxy S21, which definitely brings us to the current design language that is so recognizable like a Samsung phone. this triple camera is now in the corner of the back, it's unmistakable now, in fact this might be the best one with the metal piece melting on the sides and specifically this purple and gold color, I think it's kind of iconic, this one too It's the beginning of the base models are extremely boring, I call it now as the action is much higher and lower in the lineup like the note fighting the ultra for Supremacy that's crazy too The Fan Edition and the series a fight between yes to be the best overall value, but sitting in the middle, in no man's land, you just can't screw anything up and have to play it safe, that's exactly what the S21 did.
They actually went to a 1080p screen. Now they're back to flat screens. no more expandable storage on this model no more charger in the box for this model whatever the industry is doing that's what they're doing like there's no leadership here there's just enough brand cache like they made a Samsung version of the phone that everyone buys in stores and puts it next to that in the store, people will just buy the Samsung, so the Galaxy s22 is more on the same track, colors a little more boring, edges slightly more flat all the way around, but on the plus side, this also basically has perfectly thin bezels on all sides at this point, so I think the screen-to-body ratio is now in the 90s and, frankly, I don't care anymore Whatever the number, I just feel like there's so little bezel to hold with my fingers that anything less wouldn't really make any sense, so the bezel is effectively gone at this point, it makes a lot of sense to go back to perfectly flat screens because Samsung is now has realized and everyone else has realized that those curved screens are nice.
They were cool and looked great in the past, but they were kind of a crutch to make the phone appear to have a larger screen-to-body ratio than it actually did, but now that we have the technology to get all the way to the edges and corners . There's no need to curve the screen anymore, it just looks amazing, it's flatter and more durable, so perhaps the most noticeable change on the outside is that these phones are now a little smaller than last year, so they went through from 6.2 to 6.7. at 6.1 and 6.6 inches for s22 and s22 plus and I have no doubt that that is specifically to give more space and a bigger gap to the Ultra phone at the top of the line, the ultra has been fighting with the note. is winning, it stole the Spen and so with these boring default base phones for $750 you're totally fine just look up, although there are some more expensive phones you can spend more money on so the Galaxy s23 was interesting for a reason and a reason.
Only there are no more exos versions, so all the Galaxy s23, Galaxy s23 plus and s23 Ultra ship with the same Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 slightly customized for Galaxy and yes, the performance is excellent, you know, during all the years they have been trying to catch up. from the exos chip to the Snapdragon chip they eventually abandoned it, which you could argue is good news because now everyone gets the good performance and efficiency of Snapdragon, but it's also bad news because there is less competition and there is much less incentive for Qualcomm do something particularly good here, the goal of the exos chips was supposed to be better customization and integration and even though we got rid of that, they can still claim with s23 to have done at least some customization because, like I said, they made it a chip 4 Galaxy, so it's not the standard, everyone else gets what's different, slightly higher clock speeds, slightly more powerful because they have better cooling on these phones, so mission accomplished, other than that , they have removed even more. character by getting rid of the characteristic camera bump and making a phone even more generic anduniversal appeal than ever just the same set of cameras same aspect ratio same features just a little more battery in both versions no one is saying these phones are bad, they just aren't not taking exciting steps like they used to in the past which brings us to this year's Samsung Galaxy s24 with even more boring colors and an even more generic design and even more playing it safe than ever before this year is the Snapdragon 8 gen 3 and this chip enables some pretty substantial AI features in the ones that are supported, it makes phones really good, like live translation and generative photo editing, call detection, and my personal favorite circle to search is amazing, but a lot of the AI features are now coming to some. other phones and the circle to search is not exclusive, the pixel has it too and, frankly, apart from having flatter edges and slightly larger batteries, they share many parts with the previous year's phones, such as the cameras and resolutions of screen, increased a little. a little but functionally the same screen-to-body ratio the same maybe the buttons click maybe it's enough these phones have already grown, so now we have seen the brilliance in the different eras, from plastic to glass, from the iconic to the static but my favorite way to visualize all these different types of improvements is the graphics, so welcome to my favorite section, the graphics section, now before we briefly talk about our channel sponsor, dbrand, a fun fact: they have been supporting these devices from the Galaxy.
S4, that's a long time ago, they are also compatible up to Galaxy s24 and I think this year with these phones a lot of us were hoping to get ch2 support to get something like that ring of Mag safe style magnets, but for some reason the stars don't They lined up, so this phone doesn't have that, but with dbrands cases for the s24 series, they all come with built-in magnets, which means basically any ch2 or mag safe accessory will work on the s24, so essentially giving you That easy alignment on any wireless charger is pretty amazing, you can check it out in the link below in the description, so let's take a look at how far these phones have come.
These are really interesting and there are a couple of them, I think Samsung is. the first one having noticeable ups and downs in their progress charts which is really interesting, it feels like they are going backwards but there are reasons behind all of this and this could be a much crazier chart because they obviously split up and branched. on a bunch of different models Edge models, plus models, ultra models, active models, but I'm sticking with the base models just for the sheer simplicity of the images, so first, the screen sizes, these are the base Sam screen sizes.
Galaxy S every year, starting with the original Samsung Galaxy S at 4 inches, then quickly jumping to five and then slowing down and settling around 6 inches, you can actually see a slight drop where the S10 was 6.1 inches and then it was 6.2 again, then it went back to 6.1 to make room for the ultra and then it went back to 6.2 again, it feels like there is now some sort of dedicated gigantic phone, so this growth rate has pretty much leveled off, so the huge phone is the ultra which is 6.8 Which is crazy but here's a fun fact based on this graph, maybe it's not a fact but you can argue that the Galaxy s20 was kind of like a Samsung pico because it's the same size of screen than today's base phone, but hold that thought, let's look. now on to the battery sizes, just so you know the battery life hasn't improved dramatically, we're still in a day for a good phone, but the physical capacity of these batteries that fit in these phones has also improved significantly, so so you can see how it starts. at 500 removable milliamp hours, of course, and almost doubles with the Galaxy S5, but then drops just as they introduce cutting-edge phones and then shoots up again, but again as flat lines in line with a certain memorable battery-related event, but they finally got the courage to push the base phone back up to 4000 milliamps and what do you know?
You can argue that the Galaxy s20 is the peak Samsung, that's the first year of the 4000 mAh battery and that's still the battery size now that the main camera megapixel count is a little more interesting, maybe a It gets a little more classic over time, of course, megapixels don't mean everything, but it's fun to see the priorities. increase over time at first there was a lot of incentive to just upgrade from 720p video to 1080p and then to 4K video, but once we hit 8K you know there's no reason to go too crazy with the megapixels beyond of that, of course, the highest end.
The Ultra phones quickly raised the ceiling to 100 megapixels and then 200 this year, which is crazy, but for the Baseline phone you know most people's screens aren't 50 megapixels, so I think this is it. a very appropriate plateau, but last not least the starting price, we all know what happened to smartphones over the years and here you can see visualized the steep climb through 400,500,600 dollars to the ceiling of $900 for the Bas Galaxy S, this is the base phone and now the most expensive phone. Of course, it's also gotten dramatically more expensive, so again, that increased ceiling with the ultra has allowed Samsung to go up to $1,300 upfront and today you can pay $1,660 for the 1TB Galaxy s24 Ultra, but that's At least it has helped increase the base price. we're down a bit to $799 today, that's how we get from here to here from the Galaxy S1 to the s24.
These videos are super fun to look back on and visualize that progress over time. I also feel like I already know which one I want to do next, subscribe, make sure you watch it anyway, thanks for watching, I'll see you next time, peace of two concerts, everything I deserve.
