Apr 09, 2024
here we go, what's going on guys, welcome back to another episode of the Ryan Myers Expeditions. We are in the second

part

of our

trip

to Baja Mexico. We rambled far, far away the last few days. We are about 10 or 11 hours south of the border. Today we are here at the yaks, we have the new Hobie i9 and we are finally going to shoot a giant

fish

. We have my brother there with us. Let's do this, if you haven't seen the first

part

, go back and check it out. We caught some giant whitecaps and headed south.

The mission of this

trip

is to catch enough

fish

for JT's baby shower. How long will it take to have his first baby? About three months everyone flew into the city for the baby shower and our mission is to get enough fish to feed a lot of people, so right now we still have about a goat left that we'll probably eat at the end of the trip. So today is the day we got a really nasty report from one of the guys that just showed up at camp, he told us this is one of his favorite places to fish, he said there are two of these islands where the water falls very, very deeply like a hundred. feet immediately said white bass passing by big yellowtail grouper and perhaps what excites me most said there are a lot of halibut here in this bay really one of the fish I want to cross off my bucket list on this trip Right here We have a nice long paddle ahead of us, then we are going to clean up the mooring at the bottom and we will see you in the water and show you how incredibly beautiful this place is underwater.

More Interesting Facts About,

Jumping into it was immediate. It was obvious that I had found what I was looking for, there were plenty of fish around, there was plenty of life everywhere, those smaller whitecaps were baiting everywhere and I knew I was absolutely in the right area, however when I find a place like this. I'm in no rush to catch the first available fish. You know, I just arrived. This is my first dive and I don't have many places to explore. You know, I'm in that kayak and I kind of have a couple of little island areas, but I'm not there to ruin everything, so my first two dives are always going to be the most demanding.

I want to see what's around. I want to make sure there are no real giant trophies before. I just go shooting shots or any small kingfish or any food fish that come along like I normally do, try to find the edge of the reef, so that's where the rock lands and then meets the sand and whatever. depth, that's where I'm hunting and one of the benefits of being a deeper diver is that I don't really care if that edge is at 90 100 120 or 60. And here in ba fortunately it was a little shallower, this breakout fell about 60 or 70 feet and it turned to sand.

Now there won't be much life further out on the sand and whatever is on the reef, those larger predators will be kind. of hunting and hanging out right on that edge so that's what I want to find and if I really don't have the visibility to see it from the surface I have to do a couple of dives and get my bearings and find where that spot is because I guarantee That's the area I'm going to be hunting for the rest of the day, so you'll be able to see exactly that again on this dive, where I now understand where the edge of the reef is. sand and this time I landed a little closer and when you're hunting these types of areas it could go either way, the fish could be on the rocks on the edge or they could be on the sand waiting to come in and get their food so you always have to look in both directions and see, because depending on what it is, anything is possible, like the big yellowtails that could be in the sand, those halibuts could be in the sand, even those.
Big giant groupers can be on the sand and then come up to the reef, like here this grouper levitated from the bottom and was right on that edge, you can see it there and I don't know what the hell happened here. I thought I lined up perfectly on a prone shot. I love this shot especially with grouper because they are so wide but they are completely smelt in this first shot in this amazing spot so now I knew there were fish here but I really wanted to catch something. before he got too cold you know he really only had a wetsuit to surf so his time was going to be limited and you can see him hit the bottom and there's a lot of life here in the shallow waters of Baja, It's really perfect for beginners.
This was a nice sheepshead that was kind of sailing back and forth, he did his iguano, he went down to the bottom, he's well trained, but then he got completely lost, bro, you're close, that's two misses, I missed a little Mere. I don't know what that was and he just missed that sheep, but that's it, we're all out for today, let's go get them, so my brother is one of those guys that plays table sports, he doesn't really shoot things, he kills nothing and you really can I see it when we go out hunting like that killer instinct just isn't there, like it gets to the bottom, the fish are there and that sheepshead comes and comes back smelling completely like a five to six foot shot, I don't know.
I know what the problem was bro, this is a Hawaii flashback, right, it's like you dive down and it's perfect, but you don't want to hurt him or something, so from there I'm doing a few more dives on that edge and I see. The fish I'm looking for for the first time in my entire life. I have seen one of these, but a beautiful halibut, very distinctive, very easy to spot. I didn't know if they were going to be super mixed. or what, but you could see that shape from very far away and he didn't get scared and I managed to get down there and hit him right on the head.
I'm just as excited to get this fish in the kayak as the next one to get my halibut. place so we moved places and I'm going to repeat the exact same process. I'm going down to the bottom. I'm going to find where the edge of those rocks meets the sand and that will be my zone now. From all the diving I have done so far this day, I have understood that much of that life will be further up the reef and not towards the sand. I'll still look out because I really have no idea but there is tons of life on the reef now that the tide is high which brings a lot of those fish to the reef to feed and sure enough I saw this new species and I have no idea what was it.
Some kind of red snapper with a spot on its back, I don't know, but it's a general rule anywhere in the world. If it's red, it's dead and guaranteed to be delicious. I tried to swing him but he did it. Don't let me know that was okay, the next drop back to the edge of those rocks and I try to do a lot of different techniques, especially when I'm trying a new area, I don't always grunt when I get to the bottom, but I heard it and it's that you know the previous dive. I probably didn't do this dive.
I did it, you just tried different things, change it up to see what works, especially when you're in a new area like this and I'm doing my I did my grunting I'm posted I'm going to do my turns real slow and easy look around and see what happens one One of the big mistakes I see most people make is doing too much bottom, so they're down there trying to attract fish, but in reality the best you can do on the bottom is probably nothing at all, if you post, they know you're there, those fish know you're there, they know you came into their environment and your job is to be as non-threatening as possible and be as nice to them as possible so they come to you and you know a lot of people try to dust too much. , grunt too much and you know it's my It's a mistake, it wasn't clear to me at first when I started explaining some of this stuff, but the less you can do, the better you can see this golf grouper coming right at me and getting sure as a nutcase I don't know why the safety was on.
I must have hit the kayak, but you can see the big target panic when I pull the trigger and flinch, but he's going after this rock and I managed to get a snap to catch him. the tail and every time I have a pretty bad shot and he goes into a cave like that, I'll let him go because I know I can get back to the surface and I'll do another dive there and try to figure out what's going on now on the surface. I'll try to keep some tension on this fish because I don't want it to sink any further into the hole.
You know, as long as I let it go a little, then I know. I can go down there and most likely get him out of there, which is pretty much exactly what happened. He was barely in that cave and I was able to go down there and get him to come back out without pulling too much. hard because I don't want to take that shaft out, I just want to move it to get it out and guys, it worked perfectly and then I took this guy out and at that moment I thought it was a goat, so it was like it was like I don't know what this is, but then It turned out to be my first golf grouper.
Cute girl, hey, cute, fat little grouper. I barely had that thing, so this was actually next. diving and now I knew there were some fish around, I had seen that snapper, I had shot that grouper and I really went into full ninja mode here on the deep side of the ledge, crawling around to see what I see and sure enough, another golfer appears. I managed to close this distance, I don't have the safety on and I drilled this thing all the way through and you'll notice here I don't let it go into those caves because I know it's a solid shot and I'll land this fish in one spot there we go there I don't even know if the cabrillo has to show the hobie kayak people didn't even know they had a built in fish stringer this is kind of high fantasy -tech, some kind of rope, you know, it has all kinds of cables, so from there I did a few more dives here.
I was really looking for that special fish, you know, I already had two fat golfies in the boat I had. a whitecap in the cooler that I was going to plan on eating that night for dinner, I had that halibut, so I was really looking for something special and anytime you have these big congregations of bait fish like that, that's where those big predators live. he could have been cruising through this area with a big yellowtail or you know really who knows I'm new to this type of area so I don't know how he hunts a white bass, I don't know if he's cruising around looking to eat these bait fish too but a couple more dives in this little corner of this beautiful place I didn't see anything, but again, an amazing day of

spearfishing

in Baja from the kayaks was absolutely amazing to do, no boat needed, right guys? a kayak mission, look at that hope, I had no idea they included a stringer of fish in their kayaks, two nice whitecaps, a halibut and a beer from our friendly neighbors along the way, guys, we're having a feast tonight, this trip It's just getting started, so we get back to camp and one of the local guys just told me that these aren't actually leopard groupers, these are golf groupers, so these two that I just shot are my first golf groupers, so I'm very excited about those two beautiful golfers and that halibut, so there are two new species today, which doesn't happen to me that often anymore, so I'm beyond excited.
I'm going to fillet these guys and then I think we'll go back to fishing a little bit because we birds are going to do a sunset session, go explore this really cool mangrove tidal lagoon and see what else we can catch, so I've never filleted before a halibut, but I've seen a couple of YouTube videos where we take four fillets out of this thing and my Dean guy just confirmed it, so I'm going to split this down the center, take a fillet out of each side and then give it the turn around and do the same thing again.
Look at that damn white fillet, so we'll leave the skin on so when we cross the border they'll know what kind of fish we have in case they stop us and ask the boys, look at this, we're taking hobbies deep into this mangrove swamp. Right now, I'm running out of water, brother. I'm running out of water look at this look how look who we're floating on come on guys look around ridiculous guys oh no oh come on bro it looks like it's deeper this side we screwed it up we went the wrong way it's like a fucking aquarium look at the bites from down there, they're baby bites, oh look at the size of those puffer fish, where am I?
This place seriously keeps getting more incredibly beautiful. I can't believe it, so we are saving a lot of those fish that I shot today, the halibut. and those golf grouper for jt's baby shower so what we're cooking tonight is again that goat that doesn't disappoint because guys this fish is one of the best fish I've ever had and we're keeping it simple tonight. that egg beater shake and I brought it just so I didn't have to bring eggs it was very simple it was just a box of egg beaters with cake and then I left it on a pile of that seasoned Italian breadcrumbs and I'm going to fry all of this , we're going to have a quick and easy meal guys, I'm exhausted but I'm starving, this is going to be fantastic, guys, dinner was incredibly amazing, but I couldn't go to sleep before I came out here and I took a look at the low tide in this swamp.
The tides here in Baja are crazy and they went down so much. So much so that that river we were in before is completely drynow, so let's walk here and see what we can find. Look, it's a blue crab like the Maryland blue crab, oh man, if it weren't so full. It would be dinner, look at that is dinner, check it out, check it out, guys, this is an octopus, what are you doing, what are you doing, don't come near my feet, don't come near my feet, no, not my feet, stop, check look how cool that is look how cool ah inked pink oh my god that's another octopus do you see it was feeding on that clam that's just a hole that's an octopus hole that was feeding on that clam and he dropped it when I got there, how sick he is, that's one of them little butter clams, this is another octopus, each one of these holes has a damn octopus, look at them down there, they're so small, like they're not made of edible size, but they are quite sick. that crab outside that's fucking up dinner right there oh my god oh my god I want to eat you bye look how you guys are having a good time guys having a good time tonight yeah I'll leave you guys alone. there we go, there's an octopus of the right size in an octopus hole of the right size, oh my god, look at that in the textbooks, octopus hole shells all around them, feeding on them, pretty sick, oh my god, look at the size of this balloon, holy shit, guys, look at that, oh.
Oh my god, look there's an octopus, look what you're doing buddy, shit, there's so many delicious treats tonight, oh my god, how crazy is it for the kids to see him maneuvering around at night. Freaking out, did you just catch something? Just catch one fish because I missed it. I'll have to see it on the video later. Are you using my light to hunt brother? How cool is this? You just caught one again. Shit, I just saw him catch one. He's using my light to hunt this is crazy where are you going buddy? You can't go ashore, goodbye guys, there's another octopus, what are you doing down there?
You're all here at night, can you even see that thing? What's up dude? Come on, move for me, there you go, oh God, look there's a little baby octopus, there's another one, this octopus has a dead mullet, bro, what are you doing? Did you catch that milkshake? Oh my god, it's in the frame. I just saved that mullet's life. mullet nothing, get out of here friend, he's going to eat you again, get out of here, go away, I just saved his life guys, how incredible, another day here in Baja Mexico, guys, thank you very much for watching the second part of this Baja mission.
