Funk, As Digested by a Classical Musician

Mar 25, 2024
Hello everyone, my name is nari and as a continuation of my series where I write these pocket pieces, I wrote something influenced by the

funk

genre this week. Thanks to Paul for suggesting this idea as a

classical

musician

. I wasn't exposed to

funk

music until very recently, first I had to spend some time deliberately listening to some recordings. Here are a few things I made a mental note of. There is a very strong emphasis on the downbeat. The general subdivision of the beat is made up of even sets of notes. On odd occasions, a short pattern composed of an odd number of notes repeats and disperses throughout this pulse, and lastly, the harmonic direction generally seems to want to sit comfortably in its place without moving in too many directions.

I tried to keep all of these things in mind for my piece, but I wasn't as strict about maintaining a steady pulse and could only try to imitate the kind of attitude that leads to authentic pacing before moving on. Here are some additional comments, first of all. At the last minute I decided not to go with the clavinet sound but with the wurlitzer sound with the guppy effect and the wah effect and I did that because I'm not used to the clavinet sound and I'm not used to the way it feels and sounds. and was having trouble hearing certain tones the way I wanted them to sound with the clavinet sound.

More Interesting Facts About,

funk as digested by a classical musician...

I think it's just a skill and touch I haven't acquired yet, the kind of hits you need to make to get that slap sound. I'm not familiar with it and it was difficult for me to also make sustained notes. I didn't like the way it sounded with the clavinet. I much preferred the wurlitzer and I just prefer the wurlitzer sound for this one too because I'm very inexperienced when it comes to funk music and I'm new to the genre. It's a little awkward for me to improvise some parts because I'm not familiar with that kind of style where you prioritize rhythm and focus on rhythm and there's just this attitude that I'm not very familiar with, so it was challenging but also very fun because it was a learning experience and in terms of filming it was very fun because first of all I was in the park with Bobby and I.

I've never been to the park so it was a nice experience, but it was quite challenging due to a few things. The first thing was to set up the keyboard because I should have brought something to elevate it, but since it was low to the ground, I ended up putting a towel on it. there, but it was still low because it was low, it was very difficult to play. The second thing is that there were quite a few people who kept walking around and asking me questions or talking to me, which happens quite often when I make these videos. but not as often as today, yeah, yeah, okay, here's the other thing if you're using a tripod.

Also, I had some issues with the keyboard battery today. I usually put in a new set of batteries before doing something like this, but today. I just didn't do it and the thing about the keyboard is you can't tell when the battery is low the only sign it gives you is that maybe five minutes before it ends it will start to crash and that was happening luckily I got it . in a few more takes before the keyboard died, but that was a bit worrying, it was my fault. I should have put in a new set of batteries and now here is the final piece.
Hello, Bobby. Hello.
