against Johar Sonayev has since reached a federal appeals court, but the fight for the 29-year-old. to evade the death penalty is far from over 12

Alex Bien Joharsonarev remains behind bars at a maximum security prison in Florence Colorado The 29-year-old's release date is still listed as a death sentence on the Federal Bureau of Prisons website.

On April 15, 2013, two suspects detonated two pressure cookers filled with shrapnel, killing three and injuring hundreds. in the explosion, the suspects fled and a massive manhunt ensued three days

later

after collecting cell phone photographs. and videos of the explosion, the FBI released surveillance footage of who they

later

learned were brothers Timberland and Joe Carcernaev. Later that night, the brothers murdered an MIT campus police officer, kidnapped a student and fought with police during that police confrontation. Jokhar drove the stolen vehicle. Tamarlane Tsarnaev died from his injuries, it was not until the following night that the surviving brother was found hiding in a boat in the backyard of a Watertown resident on the 22nd.

April, he was charged with a hospital room and in July pleaded not guilty to 30 federal charges. In January 2014, prosecutors announced they would seek the death penalty against Joe Carson Raya for his role in using weapons of mass destruction at the 2013 Boston Marathon, nearly two years after the attacks. Tsarnaev was convicted on all charges. In May 2015, Tsarnaev, 21, was sentenced to death. He has since been held in this maximum security prison in Florence, Colorado. Five years later, in the midst of the pandemic, the First Circuit overturned his death sentence and ordered a retrial in the penalty phase, the three-judge panel concluded that the judge did not sufficiently question jurors about their exposure to news coverage of the bombing, but the ruling still meant that Cernaev would be confined to prison for the rest of his life last year the U.S.

Supreme Court overturned In that federal appeals court decision, the justices found that a federal appeals court was wrong when it overturned his death sentence based on evidence and jury selection issues in January. Sarniaev's lawyers urged a federal appeals court that the 29-year-old should not be executed, they say.
