Why All of Our Cars Are Broken

Mar 16, 2024
part of this video is sponsored by doordash we build a lot of

cars

around here and they're all

broken

oh that's an accident that was an accident sometimes working on

cars

means things don't go as planned there are all kinds of unexpected problems and it's easy to get overwhelmed , are you kidding? Today we'll look at everything that's wrong with our cars, explain why they're

broken

and what it takes to fix them, and hopefully inspire you not to worry if you encounter something similar. obstacles so let's see how messed up our cars are let's start with the old Miata as you may remember we built this car to be a fun car that you could take to the track but still drive it daily and for the most part this It is in good condition and works quite well, but there are some small problems that still affect it.
why all of our cars are broken
First, one of the most annoying current issues is with the gauge cluster. We replaced the analog gauges with a display to have a digital dashboard which is pretty cool in theory, but the thing has never worked very well and currently doesn't do anything. It's been fixed a couple of times, but it always seems to stop working again, which is very annoying, especially when you just want to know how fast you're going or how much gas you have. I'm tempted to try putting these original gauges back in to be completely honest with you. The next problem with this is also computer related, but it's a different computer, it's the ECU, you may remember.

More Interesting Facts About,

why all of our cars are broken...

We fitted the factory ECU with a mega square unit which gave us full control over the engine and allowed us to turbocharge it and make the power we are making, honestly it's a great kit and I love it but there is a problem. that we're having with it and that's kind of like drivability, like when you're on the highway and you just need to accelerate a little bit to maintain speed. It's hard to understand what to do when you push the throttle to get it to move a little in those conditions, the mega squirt controls a little differently than most ecus and we haven't really found a Dyno tuner that understands it well enough to be able to do it. run super smoothly last time.
why all of our cars are broken
What's wrong with the Miata is pretty simple: the driver's door speaker is cut out, so there's probably just a loose wire somewhere. We replaced it at some point, so maybe I didn't connect something well enough and it came loose. So I just have to get in there and probably reconnect it so the Miata clearly has some annoying issues, but at the end of the day it's nothing that can't be fixed and it's nothing compared to some of our other project cars. Now let's look at Another Pain Point for Me in My Last 14. Thanks to Doordash for sponsoring this part of the video.

Now many of you watching already know Jimmy, so to help Jimmy earn some extra money for his new project, I decided to sign him up for Doordash Jimmy. Are you ready to make some deliveries? Yes, but I only have one request. When you become a Dasher, you become your own boss. With no uniform, no shift schedules, you can choose the days and hours you want to work, even the deliveries you want to accept, hey and with benefits like cash back on gas and the ability to withdraw money instantly, it's a great way to put extra money in your pocket for that project car sitting in your garage, so what are you waiting for?
Put some extra money in your pocket today and click the link below or download the Doordash Dasher app today to sign up thanks to Doordash for sponsoring that part of this video okay and here we have my S14 you might remember that it has Been on the channel several times. I had an rb25 that spun. a bearing, we made a video taking it apart and figuring out what was wrong with it, it's been sitting ever since so there are really two main problems here, this bunch of spaghetti I have on the driver's foot. I started moving the fuse box. that's under the hood all the way to the trunk just to clear up some space under the hood and get these wires out of the channel that they took to get to the engine bay it got about halfway down you know I just got a bunch of wires now I just got I have to continue where I left off and finish putting the fuse box in the trunk, but then we have another main problem and that is that in the front of the car we don't have an engine or anything, so where was it once? it was an rb25, now there is nothing so something needs to be put there.
I have a pretty new rb25 in that garage waiting ready to go in here, so I'm thinking in terms of how long it would take me to fix this, yeah. it would take a little longer than most things, probably a few more weeks up and down, WRX and Nolan, what's going on, man, what's going on, oh, you know, just hanging out like you're doing it, it I do well, what's wrong with the low car? A couple of things, actually new rims, we tore the absolute shit out of these stino Greg rims that were here, that will happen, they were mounted on our XXR wheels that were the wrong offset, so we had some issues with that, let's get some new. tires and I think it's time to replace the max heat rod coilovers that were here 300.
I'm pretty sure one of them blew up pretty good and my back was pretty much destroyed from driving these things like a thousand miles in a couple of days. with such a stiff suspension, so I'd like something with a little more compliance, but man, once we get those things done, I really want to get this out. I want to make sure I go to track days in SoCal this year. Like Button Willow likes the streets again because I love driving this thing, it's just amazing, we have to replace that wing, so oh, that's right, the wing is gone too.
I came to work one day, the wing was gone and I just accepted it, so yeah, maybe. Honestly, it's not too hard to accept, but did you ever love that thing? No, so I think it's time to also get a new Wing that isn't too bad. I mean, it seems like for the most part it's not broken, it's not broken, but as you remember, I had some hiccups with the Hilo shoot, hey, we have shiny oil again, so what would you say to the people who say that We just don't know what we are doing with the Subarus and that we didn't do any of the preventive measures? things to keep our seven engines from melting you're right yeah so people said part of the reason we blow up these engines is because they have some known problems these cars need baffled oil pans if we want We're going to make days Of track, yeah, guess what we had the oil pans stumped from the start, so we had that base covered and also the overheating.
Wow, it's hot, do you understand that you should upgrade the cooling systems we did? We put in some larger radiators to increase cooling. capacity, we did our due diligence, sometimes we just don't cover those things because they're a little boring or not really relevant to the topic of the video itself, which is why we don't mention those mods honestly if I could point out one thing. I think when we were doing the side grip test, the 200 foot big circle, big circle, we also filmed a commercial while we were doing it, so we were doing those huge side grip circles for a long time and that's a lot of oil sloshing. even for a baffled oil pan, we also did it repeatedly, we did it several times, so I think if anything was the most problematic for our engines, okay Joe, I've talked about low carb, what's up with the car high?
Remember we lost third gear at Sonoma, it's gone now, are you kidding me? They replaced it that day and it has been fine ever since. That's not to say we won't mess up another third gear in the future, we're still making the same amount of power through the same transmission but different, uh, so it may happen again, we might want to beef that up a little, but the only thing I have to complain about is the fit of the bumper, which just bothers me, but there's not much I can do. Get it done, this bumper is a scream, but the car runs great and feels great when you drive it now.
Nolan, you may remember that these aren't the only two Subaru wrx's we had from our last high and low. Yes, there is also the first tall car. worst tall car damn tall car so this was the first iteration of the tall car of this last tall low uh we replaced an engine on this we made a bunch of modifications to this car before James said it off the track at Willow Springs and also we used this car as a parts bin for the rest of high low, that's right, every time we broke something on any of the cars it was like oh man, now we have to sort out oh wait a minute, there's another car completely in the parking lot. go and take it out so it's also missing all sorts of little probabilities, weird and weird things, so honestly it would probably be better to throw it away or sell it cheap, but you become wall art.
You know, okay, work, what's next, trucks, hey, hey. Alright, these are our high and low Tacomas, same as the Wrx. We built them to be affordable off-roaders that you could drive every day. This is a low truck built with cheap parts and that is a high truck with very expensive parts like the bumper you're sitting on. Yes, yes, this bumper was very expensive and it is also very heavy. Yes, we added a lot of steel to the truck, which ultimately made it very heavy for what was already a pretty slow truck. This thing just needs to lose some weight.
I think I could change the front and rear bumpers to something a little lighter and maybe slim down the bed rack situation a little, just give this thing a little more light on its feet, you know, if I could change something about Me, I would also get rid of my front bumper only. Always so easy if you could change anything to a low truck what would you do? I would add an LED light in a very critical location when we hook up the locking differential on this truck in the back, we use an aftermarket wiring harness, it has a light. on the switch to tell you when it's on or on, but we rushed through the wiring, a common theme here and never hooked up the lights, so it's hard to tell when the locking diff is on, we're on the road at some point. period and I think you locked it to go through something and it locked, it's hard to tell and well, it's off, it's locked Nolan, I'm telling you, oh my gosh, but then you left it on probably because you didn't have a light to tell. you say it was on or something, yeah that's a big problem that wasn't a quick job, yeah I wonder if it can be fixed easily, honestly I don't think so.
I think it burned out, yes, the radios and multiframes are most likely broken, which I suppose is a pretty common problem in this generation of Tacoma, but otherwise you could get these things out this weekend, there is no problem, yes, absolutely, I mean they lived up to their reputation for reliability for sure and I would say these trucks took me to some of the most beautiful places in this country that I have ever seen, yes, foreign car, we built it to While it was a fun rally car, it was pretty tall for off-road duty, but we've since repurposed it a bit.
We lowered the car and welded up the rear differential and have been running it out a little bit. As for what's wrong with this car, you can see the window is a little off, that will happen. I tried to teach some of my classmates. -workers how to make donuts and how to slide a little bit last time we were in Apple Valley and uh oh Justin got a little enthusiastic. I forgot what hit. I think it was just a cone, but he hit it pretty good, so it broke. After fixing a broken coolant hose and replacing all the coolant, we overheated a little, which tells me there's probably still some air in the system so it just needs to be bled, but otherwise this car has endured some abuse and continues to take it.
I love this. Next we have the Cabrio, this is basically just a test mule that we do all kinds of stupid things on too. I feel like since we messed with him so much, I'm a little less sure that I'll do it. relax, yes, it has this hose coming out like this, yes, it has a lot of random things installed, yes, a lot of quick tests. I don't feel confident driving it well, yeah, I don't blame you, yeah, one. of my favorite cars in our fleet let's move on to some of my favorites okay here it is yeah Rosie Dude tell me about the original low car this is the first low car we built at donut it's been through many iterations and now it's a 5.3 liter LS swap drift car with a big old intake coming out of the nose it looks really ugly it's put together it may look weird but underneath it has good bones it has cool bones it just looks ugly uh something like the side of your mom's stats we have some mechanical electrical issues, the wiring harness we chose to use did not have a tailfor the tachometer, so there is no tachometer, you don't know the RPM, you just press the accelerator until it hits the limiter there.
It's pretty funny on the center console too, we don't have a shifter boot around the shifter for some reason. I tried four different ways to put the cover on. No luck, no luck, now there is smoke coming out of the tires out there, yes, it is smoke. dirt, a lot of heat goes through there, it's probably the donut car that I think is closest to a hot rod in nature, you know, you turn it on, the car makes some kind of rattle, reminds me of cars in the ones I grew up around Fmoso Drag Strip. you know, they just move forward, they've been thrown together but they run and run like it's just unbelievable and you know out of all the cars here, if there was a fire and I could only save one, I think it would be this one.
One is parked right in your heart, huh, it really is, yeah, yeah, okay, let's see the one that's parked in my heart. Foreigner, this is my favorite car in Donut, this is High Z, the original High car and this car is great. it has a lot of interesting things, namely this Chevy ct525 engine is a crate engine that makes like 533 horsepower and It's incredible, it works, yes, but not perfectly. First of all, this is a Chevy crate engine and it comes with an ECU that we are going to use and that ECU was not easy to use with the wiring harness we had so we had to get a different ECU, then we took it to the test bench and they couldn't establish communication with the crankshaft position sensor, which is something that has plagued us. in this car with the old engine, a pretty critical sensor and then there's another minor thing that I don't know if you remember, but our handbrake was extremely weak, it took a lot of effort to get it to lock both hands, yeah, so that's not really So. what you're looking for and then once those minor things are done, the car is in top condition and ready to hit the track, wait, isn't there something wrong with your transmission?
Oh yeah, I forgot about that. One point where our transmission was mysteriously leaking more transmission fluid than you would like, well it was a new transmission, you don't want it to leak at all, yeah, you don't want any transmission to leak, yeah, exactly, ah, I agree, uh. so we have to figure it out, maybe we hit a seal while installing the driveshaft or something, but that was weird and I completely forgot about it until it was cool to add that to the list, welcome, thanks Nolan, yes we have learned. anything nowadays, so cars are really painful, yeah, they are, you know, the nature of what we do is we build these cars and then we move on to the next new content that's coming, yeah, so you know that A new car arrives, that means we ignore them. the old car problems and then we accumulated a bunch of problem cars like we just showed, but looking at them now I'm motivated because I want to have fun with them, that's the reason we built them to look like.
We need to grease our Knuckles a little and fix some things, so why don't you let us know what you want us to fix first in the comments and maybe we'll do it. Thanks for watching this video and everything. otherwise on donut make sure you like the video and subscribe to the channel and see you next time.
