DIY Refinishing Lodge Cast Iron - First attempt

Mar 08, 2024
okay, today is the day we are going to try it. uh this is a

lodge

, I think it's about an eight inch skillet, it was a cheap

lodge

from Walmart, it's not very thick, but I've got some 60 grit here and we're just going to start polishing this

iron

top up that we obtain a soft and silky finish. I just want to bring them. There are some good videos on how to do this. This is more for uh, this is just my version because I wanted to do it, but uh, yeah, yeah. so we'll start well then, that's it, I'd say I've done enough with this 60 grit, I use 13 grit discs, some of this was with my hands, a little bit, some of these like this one here were bent and bent . of sand hand sanding certain areas before putting it on this uh so you can see compared to the beginning and it's scratchy here because I was working on these corners, but this is all very, very smooth, like the center there, okay. so it's pretty smooth and this is just 60 grit in a couple of spots.

Now I'm going to throw 100 grain in there. I'm going to do about a half hour with one hundred grit, I think right now I'm about an hour and a half into this maybe a little more, but 13 60 grit discs these are these are these from Home Depot Diablo this is the grit pack 100 so wear mask my mask is full of dust my hands are full of

iron

that's 120 and that's how it started and it's still some indentations so some scratches we'll keep working on it okay we're back at it I want give you an update, we have our 13 number 60's, our four number uh 100's and I just finished my second 120 and this is what we have so we started basically this and this is where we are so it's not bad.

You can see there's someone there, so you can see I'm in it. I'm in it, but it's not a simple ending. I will continue. I'm going to do two more 120s. I'm going to try to do four 150, 220 and 320, I'll just do four of everything unless it converts. Obviously I don't have to continue with four of each. Well, I've worked my way up to 220 grit. I'm going to start the third one here and hey, you can see me and my camera in the background, so there we are. Getting there are my 60s 100s 120s 150s 220s number three 220 right here I decided to go with three of each because well, there's 15 in a pack so if I can get by with three of each I can make five, you know, possibly five of this pan size, let's say, um, that's the update here.

I'm going to try to show you something like what I'm doing and in what order. Basically, I think I've said it before in this video, but I start on the outside of the tray, each tray on the outside here because that's going to eat up the outside edge of this pad, this sanding pad disc, then I go to the middle and I go around and around and move the panel. so I'm going to get ready and I'm going to try to show you some footage of that, hopefully it won't be too loud, but it's coming so get ready, if you have the volume up really high it might get louder so be careful. conscious okay here we go this is a 220 the uh g17 2023 2420 this is my sanding pad number 26 so let's see how we do here we go so so so so so so so so so so so oh that one is worn out completely right, that's pretty much what I'm doing, it was about four and a half minutes.

These 220 pads don't last as long, I'd say, as the clunkier ones, but yeah, that was a four-minute job. There, so I've made 27, I think 27 pads, now I'm missing three and we'll see how it looks after that, I still have to use some steel wool, but anyway, that's what I've been doing. four times 27 whatever that is about uh 120 minus I don't know three times whatever that's 115 minutes or something like that a couple of hours okay so I just finished with all the 320 and we start with this um now this is where I'm okay so it's not better day and night, but you can see I'm in there somewhere, it's not day and night better than maybe the 150 on um like reflection, but it's very soft and I'm going to

.
To get them really close, maybe you can see the green, see it right there where it goes from light to dark, see the grain there, there are some splendid, I would say imperfections left, there's one right there in that bright spot. oh, low battery, there's one there and there's something down there, it's not perfect. I think this would have been much easier with a 40 grit to really remove a little more material. You can see it right at the base of the tray. You can see something like this. weird double line there, ah, let me get it right in this area.
I'm telling you this is higher up than along the edge, it's kind of a lower area so it was very difficult to get that and that's what a lot of the work was trying to clean up that area and that would be the area that it has more pitting, you can see there and that's where most of the pitting is, so in the future I'm going to want to show what does this look like when you're done with just the polishing? It's fine with sanding. I'm going to continue. I have triple and quadruple steel wool here, so I'm going to put that in. this and continue, but as far as this goes, it's already done, use 30 discs, which is worth 20 discs, there are 67 cents a piece in the store, so 30 of them would cost about 20 dollars and I would say that in total More than three hours of work probably tells you that that's a lot better than it was, that it was essentially that good with a little more seasoning, but not really, so I guess you can see what the point was and that.
That's it, thanks for watching, if you made it this far let me know I'm not a professional sander and I'm not an electrical guy, I'm not a metals guy either so I did do something horrible. wrong let me know in the comments because others may be seeing this and could use some tips too so thank you all for watching okay we're working on it we'll season it up and get you guys a final. Update with better lighting when we're done, but it turned out pretty good. I never actually chose the hot steel quad wall. I just put a little triple in there and modified it, yeah.
