Powder coating with gloss black

Mar 20, 2024
Okay, I'm not at work today so I better get to work, so what I have here today is I think this is an engine bar from a Harley that someone wanted me to put a coat of

powder

on. um, so... I have the bar itself, obviously, these brackets, which I'm not going to do when I let you know, but if you could see the nickel plating here, it really doesn't look very good where they made the stamp for the left. and the same on this one, but they made the bracket for the left and right, it seems like the

coating

is lifting up, so after my investigation, I let the guy know that people have had problems with the coding on these, so what I told them.

You know, listen, I don't know how well it's going to hold up to heat, etc., I said if it comes out like shit, I'll do my best to fix it and you don't have to pay me for it. and he was like, "Okay, okay, I'll probably replace it anyway, well I agree to do it, so I have shiny

black

powder

and clear

gloss

to apply it, that's more for UV protection, so even though I'm already applying

gloss

, I'm I'm going to put glitter on top so it works better, so what I'm going to do first is pre-bake this part and I want to make sure it holds up to the heat so I have my new oven here, which I don't know if I've had on the channel. still, um, so here it is, I think it's a three by five, three or something, it's pretty big, so I've used it many times for many projects first I'm going to have to put my strut here with my anchors to. be able to hang it in the oven.

More Interesting Facts About,

powder coating with gloss black...

I have it hanging, but this is going to suck because it is as big as I can get it, there is little to no room in the back to push it back and then when the door closes it will probably be this distance from the door and I would like to raise it so that the heat increases, because the heat will increase. I'd like to turn it up, but I really can't because I have my Thermometer here, so even though this oven is huge and I can sit inside it and close the door, there still isn't enough room to do the basic parts pretty well.

Now let's try baking it and see how it holds up. it's set to 450 and right now it's 61 degrees so I have a 65 infrared thermometer it's a little off but it's okay if when I read this it says 390 or 404 or 405 or something like that it's okay to be within a small threshold because it's not always an exact 100 and also because I have a part hanging over here and a part hanging over here uh the temperature will differentiate between the whole part because like I said the heat rises so the top end could get hot. a little bit hotter than the bottom end so I want to try to scan in the middle so here is the glossy

black

I'm using 10 minutes at 400 degrees what is this?

I probably should have received the box, but 18 minutes 375. So it bakes longer but at a lower temperature. I wanted it to not cure completely so that this clear coat can really bond and hold together with the black, but if they have different curing schedules, I'll just do this for the full 10 minutes and I'll do this for the full 18 minutes, something better than a lower temperature, but since it's 400, I need my oven to want to park to get to 400. I actually have this set to 450 because in my experience, I use this 400. Actually, the degrees were only getting to 340.
So I set it a little higher so the park can reach the temperature it needs since I have time waiting here forever. Basically, I'm going to use this big one. guy here with the powder I like to pour all the powder that I have because it makes it spray a little better if the container is full this is my gun here this is my ground wire normally I paint here, but that part can be a little big, so I have this hook hanging from the ceiling. Here it's wrapped around the beam, so I could use this.
It's easier to cover here. I wish I had a proper boost, but not at least I can't open that door to let some air in. This is also the interface for the paint gun, so I actually have all my stuff checked, so I like to do click that knob to make sure I can." I don't really move it, the only thing I'm really worried about is this dial here. I like to turn it down a little bit when I'm applying a second outer coat so that the temperature of the partridge, with the exception of I don't know.
About 10 degrees, which is fine. Turn off the oven to let it cool. I'm going to open the oven and let the heat out and I'll come back down in an hour or so and prepare it well, that's how it has been. Well it's been over an hour so these things should be cold by now and will almost scratch off and then I'll paint them and hang them again so I'll use 320 grit paper, definitely rough enough to leave a mark so that those things stick, but it's not too rough to leave very deep cuts, so let me set this camera up and I'll take a time lapse to finish that off.
I have my compressor set up and my line runs here, all I have to do is clean it. I didn't sand it much, it looks like brushed aluminum now, I'll clean it up and go ahead and throw some paint on it. but first I have to set everything up, but I will turn off the camera while I do that. Another very, very important thing, at least for me anyway, a mask, you should always use a mask if you're painting with something wet. whatever, always wear a mask, traces of dust, anything that creates airborne particles, you should wear a strange mask, so what am I going to do now that all the dust has mostly settled?
I guess you could still, I don't know if it's a glow or whatever we see cool now that all it does is figure it out, what I'm going to do is finish off the black almost once it's baked, but as far as spraying it, I'm done. , so I'll grab my Aspiraré. I'll throw the powder back into the bag. I'll clear the reservoir for the other color with Reservoir I Hopper anyway. I don't know what you want to call it, but I'll clean it up for the other color and hope this turns out. Well, I could put the varnish on today.
Maybe wait another day, but there's been good progress so far, so the timer just went off. The black coat is done and the cooling is weird so once it dries it may fade a little because the paint is still technically. wet like it was melted I could probably rub my finger and hurt it obviously but it would leave a mark on the paint not as much as it would on wet paint but it's pretty melted so yeah I mean it looks super nice and then, also, I have to put the clearing on it maybe today or tomorrow, but I'm very happy with it, okay, so this came out of the oven, it came out super, super good and it's ready for clearing, if something happens, I'll document it , but other than that, this is it. pretty good, I don't know what happened, but it looks good, right, but for some reason it has metal elements. um, I don't know, I don't know why it has metal elements, so I might have to redo everything.
It looks amazing, but somehow it has like silver flakes, which makes me think that what I have here is just Clear Vision, it's supposed to be clear, it's supposed to be clear, there's not supposed to be anything about. I don't know at all what would have happened, I mean, even if there was some paint left on there, uh, it would have been Black, so I mean, the bar looks amazing, it looks really cool, but this. no, I don't know what, I don't know what this is, I don't know, I don't know what this metal is, okay, I didn't spray metal, I had, I don't have metal to spread outside.
