Will my CHILDHOOD Truck RUN & DRIVE After sitting Abandoned for YEARS?

Apr 09, 2024
Hey, okay ladies and gentlemen, welcome to another episode of junkyard digging. In today's episode, we're reviving a 94 Ford Ranger. Now I know it may look like completely normal traffic and it's not something that fits our channel at all, but it wasn't just this

truck

. I grew up but this is the one I then drove to high school, it had a transmission go bad at some point in college and it's been waiting for me to find a very specific transmission ever since and we have one and it's time to get this out of Weed and put it back on the road let's see what it takes to make a 90's EFI Revival this is the future that's happening now before we start here let's pump the brakes a little and talk about this 94 STX and the history it has .

In my family, in the fall of 2002, my father bought this cheap Ford Ranger that had been crushed by a tree and needed some bodywork. Having done that all his life, this was no problem. Dad dismantled the

truck

. I, of course, helped and Soon enough, the truck was back together and on the road once again for

years

. Dad drove this vehicle to and from work every day and I remember him driving it for most of my

childhood

; However, after

years

of service, the ranger was parked due to some problems. and I forgot about them in the front yard for about 6 years until one day I needed a truck to get to school and work so I did my first Revival out of pure necessity and put the ranger back on the road for the next 3 years.

More Interesting Facts About,

will my childhood truck run drive after sitting abandoned for years...

I got out of this truck. I easily put 20,000 Mi hauling everything from motorcycles to four-wheelers to entire golf carts in the back of the truck, if it wasn't running around on gravel or sideways in the snow, there was a good chance it would be a couple feet off the ground okay let's jump on the ranger we're doing 45 here we go oh oh that was a bad decision oh my gosh in the winter of 2017 during a trip back from college on the ranger , unfortunately ran out of transmission fluid due to an undetected leak and inevitably burned the front bearing.

I had the transmission out the year before because of a slave cylinder so I didn't think it would be a big deal but as it turns out I couldn't find a transmission for this truck, in fact it took me 3 years to find one locally and affordable during those 3 years, of course, our YouTube stuff started. I got bigger, more reliable trucks to haul trailers and the ranger was forgotten. once again in the backyard, it's been 10 years since I did the first Survival in this truck and after

sitting

for another s, it's time for the second one, let's take this sucker to the shop and get the ranger back on the road, okay there we go uglier than I remember, the paint hasn't held up well to being outside since 2017.

I looked it up so it's been 7 years since 2017 which doesn't sound good. I was wondering the bastard had my record doing a Revival on my own car. I got old like this, it seems like we came out of a barn, they ate my 1994 Ranger manual, this is weird as we normally pull these things out and they like, oh when was this last recorded? For me in 2017, I'm old enough to have my own good level barn vehicles, look at this, look at these old receipts with my own signature on them, they're all crumpled up and look like they've been in a barn for 30 years, oh that's since the moment I went up.
I was once with the golden knights at a drill in Davenport when they came to the air show and stole my patch when they jumped out the window or door at the back of the plane. It was very cold and also, I turned this off just to be sure. everything or something still works oh, we have some sparks, let's see if something comes to life inside, it has fuel, well, the clock is ticking, the clock is ticking, let's find a good taste of copyrighted music, please, thank you , rebird, oh yeah, oh this is happening. The return of the Rangers baby it's poetic for the last 7 years this truck has essentially been listening to just the beginning of the Freebird song and now that it's ready to get back on the road the fun part starts right let's put it in the air. and put a transmission on it oh I'm really excited here's all our hardware sorted out as you can see it's been in better shape before so we're going to have to do a little cleaning up guessing it's bells uh.
I don't know what they are, I'm sure we'll find out, I have no idea what the eight are. We have big nuts, small nuts and then I guess it's a crossbar. Before installing the new transmission, we wanted to take our time. to take out the old clutch and put a new one in its place on a freshly turned flywheel. Angus removed our clutch. I took the steering wheel off and threw it into the bpack LA combo brake and got to work turning the surface so I've been saying it for years you can finally see it yeah the Ranger B combo brake that makes steering wheels as well as drums and discs , oh yeah, it makes a big difference, I'm already sure that those points are hitting the hot spots, that the flute is like Harden the metalon you

will

see them after this pass, it's pretty crazy, our first pass is already there, look at all these here, these bright spots, that's where the clutch has heated up and hardens the metal and you can hear it when you're cutting it. it cuts a lot slower right here and you can feel it's a lot higher so we need to make a few more passes until all those hot spots are gone then we'll have a properly resurfaced flywheel let's run it again hey hey hey here we go , It seems.
Fantastic, you love seeing more life given to the old parts, there is no reason to replace them but they definitely need to be resurfaced that way, when we get a new one of these it

will

be able to sit there and fit properly and get maximum performance. We took it out with our flywheel ready, reinstalled it on the old pilot bearing and put the new one in its place once it was out of the way, we were ready to hang the new clutch and prepare for the transmission installation, this has a concentric. slave cylinder that is around the input shaft, which means that if his slave cylinder goes out, he can take the entire transmission out of the truck.
We replaced the clutch so we never have to remove it and do this again. Let's do the same. Same with the slave cylinder, this one might be fine, but a new one is 60 bucks to confirm that hopefully I'll never have to take it off and do it again, so let's go ahead and get this guy out and put a new one in its place . two 10mm head bolts this should slide out now it's time to install the new one this is a very difficult task take notes installed good job that's why I'm paying you a lot of money oh yeah oh good news Angus is done so these plugs are fine here, they are supposed to look like these three rubber plugs on these m5s, they shrink from the transmission fluid and start leaking, eventually you will run out of fluid, in this case has anyone been here, I want That is, we have r2v throughout this output fragment. here and someone already made the modification and put in some Welsh plugs.
Little Frost plug deals, you can get them on eBay, but that's already been done, so luckily this sucker is ready to go. Sweet, let's hang it up. I'm so ready for this. I have never been more prepared for anything in my life. Okay, let's put up a broadcast. Normally I would do this rolling on the ground bleeding and cursing in a garage that was about 2T wider than the entire van, so first time at this. could go pretty well well well just a little bit down a little bit there clear okay, straighten up oh yeah, how could you turn this on the ground?
I don't know, dude, horrible, okay, we're there, go for it, oh, did he? We did? Oh, we pushed it good. I'm not going to lie, it sucked, but it was by far the easiest and fastest transmission ever in this truck. And I doubt you have a friend if you don't have friends, buy one. so to put these bastards on these Rangers it's best to let the whole transmission and everything sink in, don't try to hold it or it will be impossible to get those top bolts, but these are the exact tools that I mentioned in the last video, but I bought these long extensions to do the transmission for my Ranger in high school.
What you want to do is go over the transmission, reach to the front and grab the bell, that's the best way to uh. tighten these guys up and loosen them now that it's older and uglier and start good two more from the front we're ready to move on to the next component which is probably the starter motor and all the wiring is good we have a new starter motor to use. on mainly because we can't find the old one which is the only thing we lost the starter and one of these bolts on these replacement starters you have to cut the old wire and crimp and heat shrink the new connector because apparently the old wires they were known for causing some problems and fire problems so as I continued assembling things under the truck and started working on our brakes, they look fun, they're not super fun for some reason, this

drive

r's side front brake line that It goes to the caliper it shares a t block with the other front brake line so that's the joint between the two it's the joint the hose is the joint it's very dumb on the right side it's had a pretty substantial leak of something over the years and it has been well maintained and free I didn't even have any problems, you must love a good I guess there is a leak in the power steering, eventually we were able to hang the transfer case and install the front

drive

shafts and butt, this is one of the few projects I've done.
I can compare doing this with a lift and on the floor and our two post B pack was making this inconceivably easier uh dad cut the jack don't worry I went with the grinder and put two plates on so it's all electrically oriented shaped It's ConEd. I can see the weld marks on the inside, so what we have, she only has a 45 dollar, so I have to get what I can out of it. I didn't come to work ready to deal with this. today, but this is a threaded pipe again, it wasn't me who went dad, through the scrap pile because the jack fell out, the exhaust is in a little fight and to clean up some threads, but we finished it.
Angus has a new line on this side he is squeezing it good luck sir thank you. I attacked this rotor with the wire wheel. Clean the surfaces a little. These should glaze and start working fine. I'm going to take these slide pins out and uh, clean and regrease the caliper slide because to me, they'll probably move, but they probably won't love it, so take them off, all you have to do is give them a punch and hit these types again, since they are basically new. really easy, you know, what's funny back in the day, in high school study hall, I would sit in a computer lab and watch videos on how to fix things on this truck and I would learn things about how to fix things on cars and things now here.
Years later I'm making those videos and I think it's such a wild world, so I try to do my best to teach them the things I wish I knew when I was their age and could easily find out in a video. It took me years to learn that lesson that I would like to take out right away and save someone from trouble somewhere else, that being said let's clean this sucker, I want to clean there, up, up, back here, same with this and same on the clamp also clean the brakes a bit and clean these guys this is just some old anti that doesn't really rust in any way once its all done i can go ahead and go back to antise these put it all back together and it will work perfect, not much better.
The way to do this is not to go straight or it will just lead you. Go at a little angle so you're always scrubbing, let the whole drum sound beautiful, how's it going sir? Well, it's going well, I'm trying to replace the front. shock absorbers now I managed to break the bolt that mounts it to the lower arm so that will be a fun solution for us later, well I would say that's enough, give it the old solder, give it the old solder, yes that will do. Yeah we're gonna crush it with a ton of washers on that side and yeah it's sure to hold all the weights on the part we didn't do right so maybe but don't call me I'm sure hey that looks good hey that's better .
Now yeah, she soldered some threads in there, she really worked, it's magic, not that I doubted you'd ever do that. I did it, don't worry. I did it enough for both of us as personal motivation. Let's see if the pump works. I'm going to guess no way, huh, why doesn't it spin? That's our new starter, yeah the solenoids are all corroded, try it now, okay my turn, here we go. I saw something in a video with flanges and diagonal layers. One time, where they had a truck with a fuel pump that was stuck and they did this, they brought compressed air to the shraer valve and released the pump, oh what's still the pump now, still nothing, give it a crank, maybe it has something, oh, you can't do that, that's right, our fuel pump is determined to be dead, so let's feed it manually, come on you old turd, I don't think you have to push the clutch to get spark, there we go, a little backfire, well there's the old 3l still working, I think let's go.
To stop here for today, let's stop by in the morning, remove the bed and make a fuel pump. Shut it down and put a fuel pump on this thing, hit the hell with the bolts out of the way, disconnected the wiring harness and took the tailgate off, after that we were able to lift the bed up and put it on some tires so we could access the fuel . the pump response is completely rusty and screwed. Wow, in just seven years, this is garbage, just garbage, okay. I'll get something to suck all that out. It should be pretty easy. Are you referring to a GCO air operated pneumatic transfer pump? Do you have a GCO? air operated pneumatic transfer pump for legal reasons, I have to say no, for useful reasons, damn, using a hose, a jug of coolant in the shop, when we installed a system to suck out all the fuel, it worked pretty well until the end. where it was clogged with tar, this must be that tar that forms at the bottom of the fuel tanks and glues the entire system together.
The cell phone that Dad is holding when we brought him from Kansas went 200 miles and it just stopped working, it stopped moving. Fuel and this was all in the bottom of the tank and it took 200 Mi for it to finally get sucked up and stuck to the entire fuel system oh god look at that perfect example, fill the tube shaped tube with tar that doesn't can move once we finish playing. With the goo, we put on the new fuel pump and hooked everything up excited to see if the truck would run on its own. I think it's the bomb.
I don't know, we'll find out. Come on, I'll learn a lot about that pig's ass. P, here we are going to break this, your nipple got rusty, it's more like I can't believe it even tries to work like that. We need to get creative to find a way to fix this exhaust manifold that is missing all of its bolts, which we have an idea for. Anyway, here we go, the Ranger runs for the first time in 7 years and has a transmission hook. Before we put the bed back in, we had a couple of things we wanted to do, but the first one is to replace the shackle on the passenger side.
In Springs now, Rangers are very common for this and if you ever see one where the tailgate is crooked but the front of the bed is level, that means the rear shackle rusted on the spring, it's against the bottom of the box. The right side shackle did this years ago and I fixed it then, but I figured while this bed is still removed let's go ahead and remove the driver's side as well because it also had a ton of rust holes. Now this job is quite complicated, but I finally managed it. I was able to get the new shackle bushing in place, connected everything and we are ready to go this morning.
We're back at the ranger working on this. I am currently putting in a new starter solenoid. Angus is putting our new filler neck into place. in the fuel tank and we are waiting for the tires to be mounted so we can go pick them up and put the sucker on the wheels and take it outside to paint the frame. Yes, there is a storm right now. I don't know very well how we are. I'm going to do that, but hey, it's easy, we'll save water this way, yeah, we'll clean it in the rain, like in the old scrap metal digging videos anyway.
It's been a good 3 day week here, we moved to Angus. his new house, yeah it was a lot of cleaning, the guy smoked for about 30 years there so the roof was black and clean, now Angus has a home to live in, this crab is in New Shell, yeah one morning a bit slow here, nice. rainy day so we're just tinkering along little things finishing things along the way oh we should be able to bleed the brakes and clutch now we have oh yeah absolutely new wheel cylinders in the rear so after bleed the brakes and clutch take some time to change the oil check all the differentials for fluid fill the transmission and change all the fluid in the transfer case well I don't feel super good about it I don't feel too bad about it That this was your high school truck which means high school rules apply, get out the SE clamps for the exhaust pipe, the seat clamps and the duct tape, it's all you need in high school.
I ran a BFG game, uh, original BFG all terrain Tas on this, I was going to use the bfgs. again for the ko2, but they are very expensive. General Grabber makes the ATX, which is as you can see, a very similar tread has some patterns on the sidewalls and is very deep. They have also become quite expensive. These were like 230 for a 225 tire so they're only a little cheaper than the old bfgs but they're still cheaper okay let's put these suckers in there that's why I was never in basketball with the new tires in place , the moment had finally arrived for the first time in 7 years.
I crawled back into the cab of my Ranger, started it up and drove it under its own power with the truck out, it was time to start the final steps. We start by washing the engine compartment into the frame, then dig inside. because it smelled very bad of mouse urine. Damn. Ang, look at the vacuum cleaner on the seats. I was just going to say that someone licked our seats. Unfortunately, there is only one way to remove the smell of mice from a vehicle and that is to take it all the way. to the steel we have to take out the entire interior of this truck to get all the mouse nests and mouse urine out of the HVAC system from the dashboard under the carpet the carpet from the ceiling everything has to come out so we can scrub this whole thing with soap and water and then it will be done, oh there we go, that's why we go so deep while Angus scrubbed the floor panels, primed and undercoated the exposed part of the frame so we could put the bed on.
After letting the van dry overnight, we arrived the next morning and unfortunately the interior was still full of mice. We decided they lived in the HVAC system and unfortunately that meant we had to pull the dash. Angus volunteered to do that job while I worked on scrubbing all the interior pieces, I think I have it now, there you go, that alone took all day oh yeah, that would have sucked forever and ever uh it still sucks now I'll make you know what the inside is like oh yeah, they were living there, holy cow, they haven't been active at all, but oh, there's a mud nest there.
I'm going to take this platform off because I think they've been, oh man, yeah, they've been getting some housing material. they are the Menards of mice, this is where they get their materials from, we will remove it and clean it too, yes we will scrub the entire interior now with one more door panel, we are all steel and so on. period, launch a 351 so that's no closer to making that ready so we'll have to get a different transmission, which is why we did all this. I thought we just cleaned it up and put it back together.
No I don't like that plan, but it's okay, you're the boss. Turns out there are covers here and there that you can remove on the Ford Range to wash the hood and remove anything to open the drains, not like sticks and scrubs and stuff, nothing really, this is something you should not only do on your Ford Ranger full of mouse crap, but something you should do in every car, remove this, they are in every vehicle, I don't know where they are in every vehicle. I don't know what car you are working on Google, don't email me and it will tell you faster than you can email me, give it a Google to find out where they are, take them out and clean your cow. drains and helps prevent the hood from rusting and prevents water and other things from getting under the dash, by the way, if it ever rains, water falls on the floor, your water is leaking somewhere, this here, oh god it's all going to the cab Kevin you blew it up yeah you get the vacuum I'll get the hose we didn't think this would be where most of the work on this truck would land but it took us 2 or 3 days to clean the inside In this van we scrubbed the entire carpet, shampooed all the interior components and then spent at least a full afternoon on the carpet either way, it was finally time to start putting things back together and the last piece left was a new headliner, okay, New Life Hack, we needed the headliner.
The usual O'Reilly speaker box material and material was too thick so we went to Joanne Fabrics, they actually have a whole foam backed headliner and also if you watched the F100 video, One of the things I did was put pieces of foam in the corners so everything would be quiet. I didn't know where to buy it, but now I look at all those things. These are the other things that Tom used for the sound right here, yeah, oh, look at that. look at that, okay, I'll definitely have to remember this, this is an indoor trick, as this material is much thinner and much more stretchy, so we were able to hit it with the sticky glue and push it into place on this ceiling curvy interior.
Well the best part of all was that these things were on sale and matched the original interior almost perfectly with the headliner removed and everything cleaned and ready to go, we started reassembling the interior, we did it, you know what's in the camera? looks like a real window it's not in real life this looks like two pieces of plexiglass and a raincoat pretending to be a window it's a whole or a deal right there it's about to be when it blows us on the interstate and talks about the interstate Angus we've adjusted the fire we've come up with a road trip for the end of this video we're going to Dalton this weekend for the Enduro races and we need something to ride the obvious answer is the 98 Yes actually, but Less intelligent answer and not so obvious.
No, the ranger, I guess we'll take the ranger. I couldn't find any real rear glass. None of the junkyards have one and no one makes one anymore unless you want to buy it on eBay, so I looked at Menards. I have a couple of sheets of acrylic, the answer would have been plexiglass or polycarbonate because these things are very fragile and are definitely going to explode with the first hit. I never thought about any changes, oh, we have a lot of slack, Kevin, don't we? you're worried that someone chipped away at this acrylic a little bit, wow, we have flex space so I think it'll be fine with that, you just know all the pressure behind the cockpit, that's what I have this for, oh well, our backup window, it's okay, let's go. the interior ended up on this thing and then hit the road to south of Kansas City like 3 and a half hours, you know what else is going to hit the road, this windshield there, it's a completely clean interior, the carpet could still be better, the insulation has some smells, but I have something to fix, that's it, yes, put some aircooler in here woohoo okay we all feel better now hell yeah we just turn the H back on to see if the air conditioning worked and then you just recharged nothing really came out of the vents it's weird , we just put in a new blower.
The lawnmower on this literally yesterday is not blowing air, that was strange, we are fiddling under the dash, pulling the levers, pushing the doors, nothing works. One difference: the fan motor that comes is one that needs to be wired instead of using the connector for Angus to match the colors black and black, black and orange, so we cut the wires and changed the polarity so they were opposite colors to those who agreed. the factory and there we go, now we have a lot of air, you know, what's funny, all this, this is not the first time I've seen this, in fact, this solves a problem that I found years ago and couldn't solve, remember that. diesel platform like IDI we had, oh yeah, the new shop truck Yes, the shop truck from a long time ago, when you bought your F1 100, yes, I put a new blower motor on it and fixed the air conditioning there to learn how to do it myself and it never blew hard the fan motor ran at all speeds but there was never much air.
I guarantee you it was the exact same problem. The factory that made that fan motor had it wired backwards. Yes, they are both from O'Reilly. and that's exactly the problem with that truck too, so I guess if you put in a new blower motor and it stinks, change the polarity that way, it will blow that way, no it's just that it was blowing in both directions. There was still only half that amount of air coming out of the dash, but there was still air coming out of the dash, which was strange. Squirrel cages work in mysterious ways I guess, so there's the learning point for this video.
Now, let's finish. this and I hit the road I can't see you you're going to push the button there it goes come on break it break it damn I'm freezing it's freezing air there you go 38° that's cold air conditioning all I did was Put a can back in it, let's hit the road, the ranger, baby, here we are slowly approaching speed for the first time in 7 years. She still drives excellent. It has a front and rear stabilizer bar. This thing always handled great and the underpowered 3 liters meant. that you always pressed hard on the accelerator to maintain the speed you had chosen, none of that has changed, everything is exactly the same, it smells fantastic here finally and the headliner looks great, the interior came out really very nice, I don't think this trunk has ever been so clean since I had it, so it's fantastic, we gotta go home, drop off the old guys, load all my stuff into the truck and head south.
Do it man, it feels good to be back, except I'm a lot bigger now. I don't fit so well in this, oh, oh, the shift knob, the shift knob fell off in my hand, come on, old lady, come on, you can. Do it man, is there like a south wind or something? This thing is struggling to do 75, I mean 70, actually the speedometer is a little off due to the size of our tires, this is going to be a really long trip south, really, oh yeah, there's a really strong wind from the South, that old mobile is looking more and more attractive, okay, we're all packed up and ready to hit the road, one thing left to do The changing of the guard, yeah, it's got a little life left, let's make it 258 miles Okay What do you think it is?
It's pretty close. I am not going to lie. There's a little bit of space here. It's a bit unpleasant. Yes. So you did this in high school. Hey? This escape. Yes, this was you. Uh huh yeah? sounds good not the person he used to be no things change a lot actually it's not very fast it's oh god it's so slow it's slower than I remember other than that it handles well it handles fantastic the uh yeah then the bad part in Right now we have a pretty significant tailwind and we're still working towards it. 65. We have to go in that direction when we get to the interstate.
Well, we'll have plenty of time to think about it. This will be a long trip. a almost long trip to dols here we go get ready Angus we're about to merge with I35 I'm ready I'm ready to die Okay let's go for 5K, that was a change of money, no no it wasn't, that was this. The lever has a slightly different shape than the previous one, it shakes a little. It vibrates pretty good, a higher vibration when I put the clutch on, it goes up like 4 thousand dollars, yeah, that's not right, you've already burned a quarter of a tank.
So, my God, have you been on the ground this whole time? Yeah, check this out P, the clutch kicks in to be careful, we got some weird EFI stuff going on that I don't love, it's going to take a little time. figure this stuff out, uh, and I'd rather do it at home, I traveled this whole 40 million from the store to home, back to the store to your house and then down the interstate and now we're going to get off the interstate and go get the 98 to go to Dalton's because we're wide open on 65 by the interstate and we're late, we're already like an hour late and we can't even keep to the speed limit, that's how the Ranger man does it. the way the Ranger points towards the 302 goly, other than that ride it's fantastic, no weird noises just old fuel injection issues from the 90's that I don't want to deal with today, plus there's a bit of room here and the old mobile will work.
Being able to hit highway speeds this truck doesn't like we can't go over 65 we're going to crash buddy look at this here we go and I release the clutch in second on top of that yeah fixed let's say we are not going. to take the old road trip to Kansas City. I don't have time to deal with this, we're already late, let's just jump in and trust the car, carbure up the 98 and head down to see. Dalton with that said, keep an eye on her channel because we'll be there to do some racing, we're just helping film, but it should still be a fun time for the old Ranger here, like I said, she just leaves.
Be a good daily driver to and from the city, transporting things around all the sticks and things beyond everything. I'm glad to have it back. It feels good to get back into the truck I grew up on. Thank you all very much for joining us in this. The best way to support the channel is to check out the merch on junkyard.com. See you here next week for another episode. Peace needs a V8.
