The Best Putting Tip Ever! (No Joke - Try It)
Apr 22, 2024oriented. To become a phenomenal putter you must stop thinking about your stroke. Okay, that's the worst thing you could do. You have to be thinking about the objective. That's it...goal, goal, goal and this exercise will get you thinking about the goal. So when I was an apprentice, you know, I was working in the pro shop and people would come in and tell me they were about to go play. But do you know what you have some advice to put? You know my
putting
isn't very good, so I used to show you this drill right here. This little tip, okay, you would go out and do this, you would go play your round of golf and, I kid you not, 100% of
ever
yone I told about this exercise came back and said, "Oh my gosh. I can't. I can believe how well he was doing." This tip works incredibly well and you'll think, "I'm crazy for you to do this." Try it. I'm not saying this is thebest
golf tipever
. If not thebest
golf tip ever. Hopefully Rory sees this because I think he needs to improve hisputting
. Alright, this is the concept. Once again, we must be goal-oriented.The goal is this hole here. Is the problem when people play golf that they keep thinking about their shot? Oh my god, I have to take it back and forth. Oh, I have to take it in a perfect arc. My God, you know that's not the case. All this, forget it. Again, we will be goal oriented. That's why I call it a "motion drill" and again, you'll think I'm crazy in a second, but once you try it, you'll putt incredibly well. So let's go like this. We're going to move our putter on purpose and then hit the putt.
Okay, move and then hit it. You can leave, you can enter. It doesn't matter, I'll show you from top to bottom in a second, but we're going to move the putter and then we're going to hit the putt. Move and then kick. Well, you'd think that if you were to take it in a perfect arc, or straight back and forth, there's no way these balls could be in line. You're supposed to take it in a perfect arc, right? I just did that one, the other one was pretty close. Well, move it and then hit the putt.
Oh, there's another one. The reason this works is that when you swing you have to think about the target to move the putter towards the target. Like I said, to become a phenomenal putter or a great putter, you have to be goal-oriented, and that's exactly what this drill does. Sit here, I'm telling you, sit here, think about the perfect arc, the perfect stroke, all that and that will be the worst thing you can do right and that's what a lot of these professionals do. You know when you start seeing them playing with their putter and all that?
That's the worst thing they could do. They are thinking about his stroke. I have to think about the goal. If you think about the goal, you will be phenomenal. So what would I like you to do now? You get it, I'm going to show you from top to bottom. Okay, when you see it, I need you to come out to the green. Give me 25 putts of different distances. It doesn't matter, you know, I'd be making longer ones. These are probably, well, one, two, three, four, five, six, seven eight! You know these are long putts. Then you know I wouldn't be sitting there tapping three feet.
I guess you could. I've never tried it, but you know a decent length. Putt, so hit 25 of them and then go play and, I kid you not, you will do incredibly well. After you do, leave your comment right below this tip, because I'm going to prove to everyone that this is the best golf tip out there. So let's take a look at my top down view because you know I say move it and people don't seem to understand what I'm saying so don't get me wrong. I'm not doing anything specific here. I'm just moving it where I want to move it.
Well, let's take a look at that now. Alright, here I am, this is what I'm doing. Okay, there's no exact way to move it. You can get out and move, you can get in and move. You can do both, it doesn't matter, so here, move and then hit your putt. So maybe try one on the outside and then do it again on the inside. So like this... move and then hit your putt, you're not trying to go back and forth, which is the worst thing you could do, or in a slight arc. The stick will move only when you are, without thinking about it.
Ok, this drill is not designed to work with a perfect punch. It's designed for you to move around and then think about the goal along the way. So that's what I mean, move it. It's not something perfect. It's moving anywhere! I don't care down the road, the only way to get the putter to not hit the ball sideways is if you're planning on moving that putter toward that target. How do you become a great putter? You orient yourself towards the goal and that is exactly what this exercise will do. Well, try it.
