⛈️ Thunder & Lightning Camp in Heavy Rain - Storm Camping Under a Tarp Adventure

Apr 08, 2024
so welcome to this episode of the good outdoors review a

storm

is right behind me i'm hearing

thunder

it's getting closer already the cloud level has dropped it will soon be upon us every time i come to this area it changes now that we are late summer, gosh, it looks so different the last time I was here was maybe a few months ago. It's funny, I've

camp

ed all over this place, all over this mountain, but every time I come back. I always wondered if I stayed there, where did I stay? Better to make a decision fairly quickly.

I definitely don't have much time. This will have to be enough for everyone. I don't have much time to look. My watch says it will

rain

in 15 minutes. I must have done it. a little service, all I have to do is put this

tarp

down before it starts

rain

ing and I'll be in good shape, oh my gosh, look at this ball, what I'm using here is the tigress

tarp

and the cordage that they provide sucks, it just tangles so easily it's ridiculous. My review on this tarp will be coming up very soon guys, it's a great tarp.

More Interesting Facts About,

The string stinks needs to be replaced. Yeah, I'm almost ready, so as everyone can see here, I've got the tarp. up at the last minute it's starting to rain right now it's spraying with the tarp here. I have set this up pretty high, but I can lower it if I need it later today, maybe tonight, if I need more protection I can lower it. lower or even add another tarp for this trip, I brought two tarps with me and that's because the forecast calls for possible flooding tonight, we'll see if that happens, but I'm prepared no matter what it's only 12:30 for everyone and It's this dark here in the clouds, it's beautiful.

I'm thinking, folks, maybe I should go ahead and pitch my tent and get that out of the way. I could do it right here. The tent will be partially outside in the rain. partially exposed, okay, I know for a fact that the tent is waterproof, so I guess that's what I'll do. I'll do this job now so I don't have to do it later in the

heavy

rain. The use for this trip is the Eureka Timberline 2. This is a very interesting shelter. This is my first trip since returning to North Carolina after driving across the country.

It was a lot of fun, but I tell you how good it is to be back. It's good to be back North Carolina is so beautiful, so comfortable, folks, it's 61 degrees right now, how about that 61 degrees in mid-August? So yeah, everyone, we made it right on time, the tent was set up, I've got it under this. partially tarp, that's the best I could do with the configuration of the trees and the ground and all that will work, it will work. I know the camera doesn't do it justice, but this forest is so dark you almost need a headlamp.
I adjust the camera settings here, let me show you what it looks like, that's how dark it is now, so this is a stool I've been testing, it's from Big Agnes, it's actually pretty impressive when it comes to stools, most . They are more or less the same, they are cheap, they are from China, the designs of those things are not that good, they are not that comfortable, this one basically fits like a chair, the difference is that it has no backrest, it keeps roaring with

thunder

out there, but so far it doesn't seem to come directly at us, maybe around us, the weather, as I understand it, is going to rain basically for the rest of the afternoon, the rain will continue until tonight and then it's supposed to let up in the morning and then pick up again, so my plan is to leave in the morning when it's not raining, we'll see how it goes, we'll see what the weather really is for this trip.
I'm trying out some new gear, for example the Timberline 2. I already did a waterproof test on this one, it's waterproof so now I'm going to test it to control humidity by airflow condensation etc, I'm trying this out . stool, I also have this little stove, this is from soto, my friend Mike, he sent me this brother, thank you very much, I really appreciate you, that's cool, so take a look here at the legs, you have four pot holders that they go up and then. lock it in place, I'm not sure how well it's working, but you can unlock it and put them down, lock it and put it in, that's fine, this is part of a cooking game.
I will show the name of this on the screen, brother, thank you. By the way, later in this episode I have a lot of thanks for all of you. They are so amazing. I appreciate everything you do for us and the channel. Oh no, that's not good. The lighter is broken. Greetings. Everyone applauds. It's unpleasant just the like, that's good, like I mentioned before, it's good to be back in North Carolina, it's good to be back here in the woods, this is one of my favorite places, I love it, it's quiet, always It's rainy, there's always fog on the way here.
I don't remember exactly how many miles it is. It could be about 10 miles long. All gravel. It is surrounded by slopes on both sides in some points. It is quite treacherous in winter. People go off the road here and get hurt all the time. The area is heavily wooded so every time there is a

storm

there is a good chance that a tree will fall and block the road, which is why I carry my chainsaw with me at all times, it is always in the back of the truck ready to go. Let's go, I've been in situations before you took these country roads.
Maybe you have 10 miles, 20 miles, 30 miles going around these curves. You will come to a bend and there will be a broken tree at the top that has fallen directly in the middle of the road blocking the whole place standing up that sucks if you don't have a chainsaw with you that sucks you come to a corner and find that blockage If you can't take care of it You have to drive in reverse two miles, three miles, maybe more anyway, like I was saying, it's good to be back in North Carolina, I love this, I do it, the country is amazing, that sure, it's amazing, it's beautiful, but there's nothing like this at least for I'm sure everyone feels the same about their areas, the areas they're comfortable with, but in case you haven't seen the

adventure

s Previously, Susie and I took a road trip across the United States, we went to South Dakota, but I also went to Colorado.
I went on a quick backpacking trip that was an off-road

adventure

, nothing but storms, the mosquitoes were so bad and the bug spray I brought with me absolutely stunk, it's a new military product, a new military bug spray, no. It doesn't work, it may work for ticks, but it doesn't work for mosquitoes. I sprayed that stuff on my clothes. I would have mosquitoes on my shirt. I would have them in my face. They just didn't care. It didn't work. I'm not someone who likes to complain, but I have to tell you that after that road trip I couldn't sit down for probably about two weeks.
I had planned to film another adventure in the rain last week. I could not do it. Maybe you know. Maybe not, but when I was a freshman in high school I was in a car accident and broke my spine in two places, so the only thing I don't do is bend over very well so I can sit for short periods of time, but this road trip did a number on me did a number on my back ah to be honest right now I feel uncomfortable not so uncomfortable that I can't sit here I can't enjoy this trip but my back hurts oh man that feels like it better, it's a good example of how some people have problems and if you are one of those people you have to learn to work with them, solve them, just like me, go out on these adventures, I have back problems, I suffer from back pain, but Hey, I can do it, you can do it, it's just about figuring out how to solve your problems.
My plan is to finish the coffee and then I'm going to set up the tent for the night. You might as well do it. all the equipment inside the store that way, if things get too bad, I can duck. I don't want to have the gear all over the place if conditions get worse before setting up the tent, I'll see if I can't get this lighter to work unfortunately, I don't have such small tools to take it down with me hmm, there we go, I think I fixed it. I was able to move the wires in there, I got it perfect, so they make great products and Every time you have a lighter like that, they are delicate, it looks like the winds are rising.
There is like a fine mist that passes through the trees and blows under this tarp. What I could do is take my other tarp and put it on the side of this one and basically just create a wall and that would keep all the moisture out. You could do that, we'll see that the pad I'm using here is the sea to summit ether pad. This pad is amazing, it's insulated, it's warm. It's super thick if you're looking for comfort, that's the pad since my review appeared. Several viewers bought this and I heard from them and they love it.
It really is incredible. It's a little big inside. backpack but if you want comfort I recommend you take a look at it, it's funny there is another youtuber and I don't speak badly of them but they reviewed it and they didn't like it and it's because they didn't use it correctly it's something like that It's funny, anyway, I have my first aid kit help here. Have some alcohol for my back. I've never taken anything but over-the-counter painkillers and that's because, well, there are a lot of reasons, but I don't know, maybe one day I'll have it. but it's not today as you all could see, put on my extra jacket, it's a little cold, I'll tell you what, let's see how cold it is, let me grab my thermometer, what I have here is basically a weather station, you can see there.
I'll tell you the wind speed, temperature, etc. There are also additional attachments here so you can set this up. I'm going to take this attachment and tie it to my post here and then we'll monitor conditions throughout the night. I don't care much about the wind data, what interests me is the temperature. That's what it's about. Now all I have to do is pair it with my phone via Bluetooth. It is currently 55.4 degrees. 81 humidity. I have some coffee left. I'm finishing up, I'm just relaxing listening to the rain, it might clear up folks, maybe I don't know, by the way folks, maybe you remember a few weeks ago or maybe even a month ago, something like that anyway.
I challenged my good friend Tony at Ab Camping to find some music and put it in his video. A video. That's all. All he had to do was find some clues he liked. He contacted me the other day and admitted defeat. He gave up. I'm not going to do it it's not easy it's not easy at all in one of his videos tony was commenting on the channel talking about how good the reviews are and so on but then he made a sly comment about the music I use in my videos On one occasion , I challenged him to a friendly challenge in a video.
I had to find some songs he liked so we could see what he likes and see if I have better taste than him or vice versa. Well, he contacted me the other day. and admitted defeat he's not going to do it he can't find music it's not easy it's not easy I do the best I can with music if I decide to put music in a video if you like it great if you don't like it that's great, that's how it works, You can't please everyone and I won't. I try to find music that doesn't make your ears bleed and that goes along with this situation and I think I do a pretty good job based on comments and feedback from all of you, everyone likes it from time to time there is someone who doesn't like it, that's how it happens, you never know, they might have the worst taste in the entire world, Tony, I accept your defeat, regards, Tony, regards.
I'm going to raise my radar here, it's working a little bit enough to charge the radar itself so I can see that there is a wave that has passed and that is what is falling right now, but behind that there is a line of storms coming this way. and you can see what I'm talking about here, all of that comes here and will be here later tonight. This app is called my radar. I've talked about this before. It is the free version. No, it is not sponsored. I don't do sponsorships, people, let me make it very clear.
I never do sponsorships. I don't do product placement. I don't do paid reviews. I don't do any of that. When I say the channel has no agenda, I mean it. The reason I mention that is because after our road trip adventure I got an email from a guy and he was really upset and said that Ford gave us the Van Susie truck and that it was like a sponsored plug or something. That's incredibly stupid. I don't know of any car companies that offer vehicles. Susie and I purchased that vehicle. We bought the truck to travel. We've had it for over a year.
He has been on the canal on numerous adventures. So if this guy is upset. Now he's late to the party, I corrected him, the guy cleared it up, I never heard from him again, this shows how tired people are of all the nonsense on YouTube regarding sponsorships, ads within videos that don't can. Say who sells what, why someone says something, or why someone uses something, so again, everyone make things clear. The channel is completely free of agenda. I don't care if you buy any of the products you see me use. No company has paid me. To use those products, no company has ever paid me to put a product in a video.Ford didn't give me a truck that's so stupid and also super fun that's hilarious I practice what I preach the agenda of the free channel you're not going to do it I saw an ad for something like that, what was that stupid thing I saw the other day?
It was like some kind of morning smoothie or something. They are like nutrients that are mixed with water and drunk. I do not remember the name. I saw it in another YouTube video. They go from one thing to talking about how they care about their nutrients and they will get it from this. I can't stand those things. I can't stand being lied to. Everyone knows this, most people know what the channel is about, so just to clarify everyone one more time, there you go, okay, I'm going to see if I can light a fire. Everyone, it's nice and cold.
A good fire. Feel good, it's still raining, but it's not too

heavy

. I'm going to use one of these Bigfoot fire starters. They work quite well. What I have discovered about these as they get older, they don't peel off very well. You can still get them. There is light, but it requires more work than before, very well, friends, we will see if I lit this fire or not. It's smoking, that's a good sign, but these are the wettest conditions you can imagine, the key to starting a fire. with wet dent materials is to build it big, it needs to be big enough to dry out as it burns, we got it going, y'all, it's nice and warm, nice and warm, still incredibly humid, incredibly humid, keep a fire like this going It is a lot of work. which is basically a continuous harvest because you can't let it burn even halfway.
It's all about keeping those wet materials outside, drying them off, and working on what is your favorite part of a

camp

ing trip. Hiking Inn Is sitting at camp like sitting around a fire preparing dinner? What is your favorite part? I could say without a doubt that my least favorite is cooking. You may have already noticed, but my channel doesn't focus too much on the cooking part. other channels that do it and that's awesome but for me it's not a big part of the channel it's not really something I like to do if you're

camping

like car

camping

that's when you cook but if you're going out For a backpacking trip a hiking trip it doesn't always make sense to cook a big meal especially when you live in an area that has a lot of predators like bears etc. like this area since I started my channel about 10 years ago I have been constantly I hear from viewers thanking me for not focusing on cooking every time I get one of those emails.
I've always found it interesting. Some viewers want to watch a channel where someone cooks and eats; that is a small part of my videos. I can not focus. too much into the cooking or eating part personally, I don't like watching people eat, you know what I mean, that's why I keep it short and sweet here on the channel, with most of the content I produce here on the channel which it is about. being in nature has less to do with civilization and more to do with nature, that's why I don't focus too much on the cooking stuff, once you get away from the fire, you realize how cold it is, it's cold, the People temperatures now in the 50s in the morning temperatures in the 40s maybe we'll see it it's pretty nice it's crazy to think fall is coming it's right around the corner before you know it it'll be snowing I'm waiting snow I can't wait for that I'm also looking forward to not mowing the grass for six months where I live you have six months of mowing the grass and then six months of not mowing the grass and it's sweet I think it's starting to rain folks it's not falling strong or anything like that. but it's enough to start dampening my clothes and I really can't take that risk.
What I have here is half a package of Peak Refuel Bison Ranch mashed potatoes and I added some chicken to it. I did an online search for these plastic bags here. like food grade resealable bags for freeze dried meals etc they work as you can see but the quality of these is not very good, the sealer tends to come off so you have to be careful, it is a single use thing. but it works, it's a good way to split a meal when you don't want to consume it all. I'm sitting under this tarp, but I can still see the fire going and I really want to be there, but I don't.
I want to get wet, I could have started the fire under this tarp and I'm sure you're wondering why I didn't do that and that's because I already created that fire area, I don't want to start another this. The forest is so cool and this moss takes a long time to grow. I don't want to have a fire pit here because all it's going to do is destroy that moss and mark the ground to take care of it. the area that is the fire area and I'm not going to have another one before dinner. I need to do some thanks.
The first is for a stranger. Someone sent me this titanium teapot. It was pretty sweet and you might see it. tomorrow morning, but there was no name attached, so whoever sent that, thank you very much, sent an invoice. I can't wait to try it. Thank you so much, man, Greg, thank you so much for keeping me going with all the coffee. you are the man and also the white honey is amazing on the toast christian thank you very much for the light shovel mike brother thank you very much for the nightcore flashlight and the stove soto you are the man chris thank you very much for the coffee and the whiskey chocolates, by the way, they are amazing, really really good, Lisa, thank you so much for the Chicken Tramper Ultralight Gear Water Bottle Carrier.
Did I understand correctly? I'm not sure we give him any special thanks. Thank you so much. for the kona coffee it's insanely good greg thank you so much for the backpacker food dr bash you blew my mind mate i mean you really did it you tried your best thank you so much for everything sean thank you so much for the eureka bug shelter I can't wait to use that and Dr. Lauren, thanks for the tent. I'm using it here. Lauren wrote and was talking about how much she loves this tent. I wish it was lighter and so do I.
The carp has been around for about 41 years 41 years plus what if it's an A-frame tint? I was worried about waterproofness, but it is waterproof. I have had no leaks in this tent so far with my testing. Thank you all so much for Everything I really appreciate it, you all are great. If you want to share something with the channel, you can do so. You will find an address in the description box below. You will also find a list of equipment in the description box below. Take into account the address. downstairs I don't live there I only have a post office box in that area I did it for privacy reasons okay chicken bison ranch fries here we go it smells good and it's good it's really good friends this is better than most things you can buy at the supermarket.
I've mentioned this in previous episodes, but there's a misconception that like freeze-dried foods, they're like chemical bombs and that's not the case at all. You can't freeze dry many chemicals, just not. It works that way, I wasn't sure this was going to be a good meal on its own but it's super high in calories, the whole package was like 1200 calories, this is about half that plus the chicken I decided to make at night . Well, I guess the afternoon with a last cup of coffee here is a gourmet mix of unpleasant tasters and folgers and something else that tastes like earth and I love it, maybe you can't tell it on camera, but it's already getting dark.
I'm pretty sure it was thunder, it's very far away, but I can, yeah, oh yeah, you never know folks, tonight might get interesting. I can not wait. Well, everyone, it's 15 minutes to nine. It's raining pretty well outside. I hear something. Thunder, it's incredibly foggy out there, you can't see much of anything, I actually mentioned the little flashlight my friend Mike sent me, check this out, this is from Nightcore and it has like a little LED screen, a very different microphone, my friend, thank you very much. Dear friend, this is very, very interesting. Level one is one lumen.
Level two is fifteen. Level three is sixty-five. Level four is two hundred. It's definitely cool. Thanks very much buddy. I really appreciate that I put this lanyard on it the way I can. hang it easily on things I can also keep it around my wrist I want yes friends I think we are in for a rainy and stormy night again everyone there should be a break in the morning at that time I'm going to pack everything quickly get out of here before it starts again it's been very quiet peaceful I haven't seen anyone I haven't heard anything about the only thing I've heard today is some birds and some squirrels and that's it apart from all the thunder I guess I'm going to say good night for now I'm going to seal the tent go to sleep I will bring everything back if it starts to storm but otherwise I will see you all in the morning good night For now, good morning friends, good morning, it is 7:58 and it is a humid morning, with fog and wind.
Did I mention it's wet? It rained a lot last night. I didn't really sleep much. We had heavy rain and thunderstorms throughout the night. stop until maybe a couple of hours ago and if you look at the radar right now there are more storms on the way, you can hear the rains and stuff that just came because I had very little sleep last night. I'm going to make some real coffee. some strong coffee, everyone applauds cowboy coffee time, by the way, in the last step some cold water was taken, dropped down the chute and poured in the middle, which makes the coffee grounds It sinks that way, you get the perfect pour, nothing more than coffee without grounds, regards to all. cheers, oh yeah, Guatemalan chocolate or something, it's fantastic, the weather is also fantastic, it's incredibly foggy this morning, it's raining, it's perfect for breakfast, I have some oatmeal, royal termat, fruit muesli, which It's oats, raisins, pineapple pieces, banana pieces, honey, sugar, cinnamon, come on.
Go ahead and check the weather, so now it looks like it's 58.1 degrees 100 humidity. I was thinking the temperature went up, it's not as cold as it was yesterday, most likely a warm front has arrived and that is what is causing the instability in the atmosphere that is why we have these storms as far as the tent is concerned I slept very well in it, I honestly wasn't sure what to think about this tent when I first set it up and that may have shown in my preview, like the materials, they feel cheap. it has an exceptionally low waterproof rating but still the tent does not leak the quality is good it is heavy but again that goes back to the materials it is made of polyester to have a heavy duty polyester tent you need to have a thick material and that means more weight, so this tent weighs like six-odd pounds, almost seven, I think last night was a palace for me, well, everyone, I think it's time to say goodbye.
I need to get this over with, get home before the next round of storms break everything. Being in a wet forest like this is always interesting, luckily we have this tarp, so everyone it's time to go home, everything has been cleaned, picked up and I'm sure you can hear the thunder, a storm is coming, we've got this wrapped up in the At the last minute, that always makes me happy, folks. It does this any time you can break camp without getting wet. It's a good day. I would stay, but I brought enough supplies with me for this trip.
I have a little more, but it's really not enough. I want to thank you all for joining me on this journey. I thank you all, take care, everyone stay dry if you enjoyed this episode, hit the thumbs up if you want to see more content like this, please consider subscribing or even supporting on patreon or here on youtube. you can join the wolf pack. I have about a mile through the woods to go before I get to my truck and this is what the woods looks like. It's definitely hotter today than yesterday. I'm almost hot. I'm going to walk up here and say goodbye, goodbye for now.
I will see you next week. Strength and honor.
