My First Lucid Air Road Trip Heading From Palm Springs To Colorado!

Mar 17, 2024
Hello and welcome to beautiful Palm Springs, California, welcome to another off-spec

road

trip

. This one is exciting because it's a

first

for me up to this point. I've only spent 16 minutes riding the Lucid Air and that video is live on our Out of Spec Reviews Channel and a lot of people have seen it and I've wanted to try a Lucid Air for a long time, in fact a year ago today was when I did it. I drove for the

first

time, so far there haven't been any more opportunities to drive, we've heard a lot of requests from you guys to say hey Kyle, when are you doing the range testing, load testing, performance driving tests, you know all our thermal testing, this stuff and to be honest I've asked Lucid for a car many times and they keep saying yes we'll get you one and that never happened and I think honestly it's because they know our coverage in depth and they were waiting for some software updates and things that are pure speculation, but thanks to a viewer Peter, who has now become a friend, check this out.

We have a

lucid

Grand Touring for the next few weeks. What a kind guide to basically say, "Hey, we love what you're doing off-spec." Take my

lucid

air. What a good guy. For three weeks while he is in Europe we are also going to do a lot of things with this car, of course this is the initial

road

trip

where I have to bring it back to Colorado, but then Colton will drive through it and put a hole in it . episode detailing the specs getting the perfect paint on this thing, what else are we going to do? range load test Canyon performs efficiency tests at different speeds who knows we have a lot to do but I have in my hand the key to a Lucid Air Grand Touring 516 miles EPA rated range, approximately 100 kilowatt hours, package of batteries, two motors and it's our first road trip in a lucid air, so I just went through and configured some of the settings.

More Interesting Facts About,

my first lucid air road trip heading from palm springs to colorado...

I'll take you on a quick tour of the car and the specs and then we have ourselves. I think it's a very easy road trip with the amount of range this car claims to have, so here's the Lucid air Grand Touring with just over 800 horsepower and it's not even the high performance one you can choose . high-performance version of this car to reach over a thousand horsepower, that would be really crazy and my goodness there's a lot to go into all of this, but the 118 kilowatt hour or so Lucid air Grand Touring battery pack I think maybe 112 because it's not a Dream Edition, so the first Dream Editions had the same cell, same design, just a little different chemistry to allow for higher energy density.

This is kind of a production version, they only sold a handful of dream additions, you can't get them anymore, so I think this is the most relevant car for us to test. You can't even buy a dream anymore. They did it to test some numbers and now this is the production spec, so I think 112 kilowatt hours. I must delve into all the specifications. I've been driving a lot of stuff but we'll learn about it as we go of course this is a long range dual motor car so for 516 miles of EPA rated range they claim about 250 watts hour per mile, approximately, you can see. the multiple headlights on this should have some interesting headlight technology of course, a lot of Aero work, so air flows under the headlights here and comes out here in this vent to cool some of the LEDs.

It has a radar and a lidar camera system which I think neither of them are active at the time this was filmed. There's actually an over-the-air update that may already be out by the time this video goes live, but I think it's coming out in a matter of days and that's going to enable Dream Drive and a bunch of other things, so one of the things I wanted to do was to experience the previous update of the car because this is what owners have experienced over the last year and then release the update, which is here are all the improvements made by Lucid. to his car, I think what Lucid would have preferred us to do was just wait for the update, which is probably why we hadn't had a car to test, but I'd say it's fine by me, I'd rather do it this way . you sell a car let's test drive that car, huge rear trunk, huge front trunk, one thing I'm not doing much research on is this clamshell design on the back, not sure it's my favorite but you've seen my thoughts that I have shown.
You, lucid air over the years, many times, a huge cavernous space, a great space below. I have the charging cable that can go in that little box over there right now. It's not fully loaded, but it's pretty loud. Shows 501 miles of predicted range. The huge front trunk. We don't need to open it now, but I think it's one of the largest front trunks in the industry before the F-150 Lightning came out. I just have a lot to explore and immerse myself in this car, it's a very important car coming up. We talk often, but then there are things like this where I realize that the sunroof definitely doesn't fit correctly on this panel and on this panel there are some differences in the gaps and it could just be that this little rubber seal makes it It doesn't look like it's sitting properly, but then I was walking along the side of the car earlier and you can see, well, this doesn't fit so well now I'm not the body panel guy, but when you start talking about trunk lids that don't they match like that, I think, oh, that's a big problem here, um, yeah, I don't know, we have a lot to explore, it's numbers on paper, maybe an extremely well-designed transmission and battery pack, but then the car was left Secondly, it is a complete package that we will discover throughout this road trip.
I have many questions and much to explore. In fact, I think it's a very nice car from the start. This thing looks like an alien spaceship. It's really great. I'd personally forgo the range and go for the big wheels, but I'm glad for the proof that we have the smaller 19-inch Arrow wheels. It can also be said that they sit very well inside the wheel for the least amount of aerodynamic drag, i.e. for high performance driving. These may not work as well, but notice that the wheels don't even stick out an inch, they are actually placed very far away, it's very interesting, let's take a look at the color scheme of the interior, everything is blacked out here.
Black Black. Now you can choose the style A. package which has a darker roof and mirror situation. I think it would look amazing. Cameras on the side here. Let me show you the back seat here before we jump into the huge back seat. Really quite nice. Nice glass roof. Everything looks beautiful. Good door. Hit from behind. Here we are in the cabin. Good knock on the door. Okay, this sounds good. The key is great, lightweight, with a little tacky feel. You do not like. You can use your cell phone as a key or they even give you access cards.
They all come in this little box. so that's what I've been doing, just using my cell phone as a key. I haven't driven it, I just took it out of the garage loaded with up to 500 miles of range, when have we seen that before? It's crazy and, um, super. Great, here we are taking a look at all these screens. Here you can see all the places we want to come home to in Colorado. Five charging stops. I think we can do it in less than that. We have all our modes here seamlessly to make the Swift more comfortable. a back road and then Sprint, which I really recommend you are an expert driver with Lucid spec summer tires installed, guess who will ignore this trip I shine maximum.
There's not much you can do with the software, it feels very primitive from the start. days, even the little things like I have the temperature synced from time to time you can see that sometimes they look like they're not synced here, but then here they are synced, there are so little errors that they don't seem to talk to each other. others see 69 70 but then 70 70. I don't know and I hope that this software update that they keep promoting, this big over-the-air software update fixes all these little things that I think have been the biggest problem with Lucid.
It's been the software, no doubt, the battery pack, the motors, the technical build of the car, it should be amazing and I have driven or been driven in this car at quite high cornering speeds and although there is no air suspension on the Lucid air, it's very well balanced, it has active damping and it's controlled as I mentioned from these three drive modes here, now this screen can do something cool, I love it and then you get additional hidden storage here, which is pretty cool and then you just touch this button. and then, yeah, fingerprint central here, so of course we have a little cloth where we can, you know, wipe the screen every time we touch it, so we're going to do everything we can to keep this car clean.
We're super nice of Peter. one of our viewers lent us this car with a huge glass roof like a model X. I'm just curious to see how much difference this makes on a road trip. I have no idea how well this car charges. Totally different chemistry than my friend Tom tried it with the dream edition, it's all new, no one has tested this car properly, I would say we have a lot to do, the materials, really good materials, I love the vibe on this car , the smell of rich leather, I would prefer it not to have animals. interior, but hey, I mean it smells pretty good in here, it's pretty impressive, so let's go home, to Fort Collins, actually, yeah, come on, boom, go, loading navigation, let's see how long it takes again before the software update, but this is what the car has. and this is what people have been driving with for the last year, so I'm here to review it and my route is being calculated here.
Now many cars take some time to calculate a route like this, even a Tesla would take some time to calculate this route and there they calculate us with charging stops which is faster than I would have expected so it is backwards in right now, so you're basically looking south instead of north, but you think we can easily get to the other side of Vegas, let's press manage, do we have options here? So it says Walmart in Mesquite, then Beaver, then Green River Coffee. All the usual stops, this could be Glenwood Springs, but Glenwood Springs is not connected, but look at that nine minute stop, 12 minute stop, 15 minute stop, 17 minute stop. stop, these are Kyle Connor level stops, that's what I'm looking for on a road trip, so I think I'll probably do a little manual route planning.
I'm not going to take this as gospel, but let's see if there are any pictures. or whatever settings we can do here, so let's see how to download maps, maybe I'll do that when we get to Colorado because we drive a lot and, um, offline areas are really nice, you can do that not many cars will let you download maps actually, um. let's see, yeah, not in offline mode and then you can do something with your personal data, okay, everything looks pretty good, let's re-center this and put it facing north, which is how I like it and we have 500 miles of intended range . some driving to make friends, I'm going to mount the GoPro and we're going to chew up the miles as they say, while I realize that this car really can't wait, oh, one thing we need to do before we leave, I need to go get a massage and I'm going to choose what kind of massage I want a little slow software, but again, yes, it's slow, I don't know what to tell you, stretch deep, relax, it's lucid, let's relax with full force.
The seat shakes, oh boy, that's really uncomfortable, okay, we won't do that, let's do a wave massage, okay, no shaking, great, wonderful, and I have our theme right now on Wonder for our road trip, that changes colors, there is even ambient lighting. Here in this little strip I will show you at night 500 miles of range. I've never seen that in an electric car before. Never before. That's crazy. Now I'm not Mr. Rank as necessary, but I am Mr. You Know. just an intense road trip, but there's no denying that it's incredibly awesome and will make for some incredible road trips.
I'm curious to see how well that translates into the real world. The road to Colorado is uphill, so we're going to be Giving this car a challenge as we go up into the Rocky Mountains, let's do it, so I spent a couple more minutes getting used to the setup, making sure I fully understood the car , finding every nook and cranny, lots of storage space, can't wait. to take you on a complete tour of all of this, to theCars really like it, although the software is quite primitive, I think it does everything I need, the sound system sounds pretty good too, we will have to play with that, but currently it is like that. 2 50 p. m.
It's almost four o'clock. I got up early, we were up filming. I haven't eaten or drank anything today and I got up around 6am. m., so I think I need to go to Starbucks. I need a little Pick Me Up and then we have to work and do a little distance back because I have some meetings in Colorado so I start the cars. I'll meet you at the Starbucks just down the street and then we'll start the road trip well, I just had an idea about the car, I came here to Starbucks. I don't expect to see these efficiency numbers, but I idled a lot and just revved a little here and there, but nothing too crazy, um.
I'm going to ask the car to maintain the temperature, so I'm going to press enable. It's very hot, 102 degrees according to the car right now, and yes, I asked it to hold the temperature for 45 minutes. I've already reserved my drink, they should have it ready and, yes, we'll keep everything going, getting everything ready for the live stream, so we'll keep everything chilling. I think I'll leave this phone somewhere if I can get it. to stay and, yes, we will be ready to go live off spec. Motoring foreign foreign foreign foreign foreign well join us at the first charging stop here at the Baker Electrify America station.
I just met one of our viewers, Frank, owner of this F.-150 Rayole loves driving it daily taking it everywhere Hi Frank, you're on YouTube, how are you guys? How are you sir? amazing loving the lightning loving that lucidity sick really nice to meet you enjoy the lightning and that's why we have the Lucid here no I don't actually need to charge it. I don't really want to carry it. We're at charge status 44. I actually stopped to get a little Taco Bell. I didn't want to eat in Peter's car, so I'll probably just leave. to eat here, but I thought, hey, this is supposed to have plug-in charging and I'm trying to figure out how this all works, so to open the charging lid we're going to have to figure out how to do it. so it doesn't work with a push and this is a complementary session so it's a free charge either way.
I just want to see what the maximum this thing will get at 44 percent, so let's turn off the climate control. I'm going to eat something here. I won't normally charge on a road trip. I would charge it, but I'm really curious to see how it charges, so I pressed the charging port open and there we have the live feed. Come on and there we go, charging port open, no flaps, no nonsense to deal with here. I have used this station in the past and it has worked most recently on the BMW IX, so the stations connect completely to the vehicle, let's see what happens.
The maximum charge rate is here at 44 percent when first starting charging by charging a lucid air and I thought it would be appropriate to use Electrify America's newest hardware here with the agile rise of receiptless software, look at that, that This is what we like to see still connecting contactors. I'm very curious to see what all the screens show. I know the car will show kilowatts inside. I don't know if it's in the battery pack or through the port. These are all things we will have to figure out. here we're going up 30 kilowatts 40 50 70 100. oh man 150 60 70 186 44 we're doing 200 kilowatts right here 190 and now it's coming back down so I raised the pack voltage and now it's just pulling it down Good to see it charging , everything is working fine. 170 kilowatts is where it levels off at 45 states of charge, so I heard under this that we should see over 300 kilowatts in this.
I heard 330 340 maybe and that's something like that. What I'm curious to know, so I'm going to stop charging this right now, we don't need to get much juice, although we already added two kilowatt hours just as a test, we're going to unplug the lucid and I'm going to eat some food, we're going to get some distance such low drainage. I'm going to go to the furthest EA station I can get to with the remaining charge and that's when we can really test the charging power, hopefully. We don't have a 350 amp limitation, but the voltage on this car is very high, very high voltage.
Look at the lighting at night, absolutely beautiful. I love this backlighting here on the Lucid logo. You can see it well. I'm going to move the car away. from the station, grab a quick bite to eat and then we'll be back on the road. It should be a lot of fun to just enjoy a quick meal here, near the EA station, the live stream viewers are back in the car and just eating some food before us. getting back on the road again I don't recommend road trips like this. I recommend charging when you need to or when you're stopped, but I'm really curious to see what this does in low states of charge and there's only one way. to find out and that's doing it right, I just finished a nice meal here, a lot of people on the live stream were curious why I wasn't charging and it's just an experiment, don't use this as advice on a road trip. it's faster for ABC to always be charging, so yeah, come on, come on, we're at 3.4 miles per kilowatt hour at 45 percent state of charge, we've got another 907 miles to go to get home and, yeah , on the way we will arrive.
Back on the road, nice little stop here, nice little headlights back to automatic wow, very bright headlights, it looks like and uh, come on, so let's do it. It was really cool meeting Frank in the F-150. A good guy loves his truck. Great spectator. I love it. Rock and roll here we go doesn't get traction until after 60 miles an hour overseas now you join us in Las Vegas there's a euv bolt charging here and it's our first charging stop and I hope it makes it all the way to Mesquite and Lucid They said we'd actually get there at 15, but I don't think he was recalculating as we were driving because what I actually did was finish the route, re-enter it, and then he said, "Oh, you can." I didn't get there and put a charging stop here in Las Vegas.
Now I would normally stop at South Premium Outlets, which are actually being ripped out of the ground and upgraded with BTC units. Those are the only 350 kilowatt units out there, so we came. here to this older 150 kilowatt BTC charger, I think it looks like this to me and, uh, what we're going to do is I wanted to show you that Lucid doesn't do automatic preconditioning, we're at charge state 16, so I had to do it automatically. or should I say condition it manually, it is recommended about 20 minutes before reaching a charging station, which is what I did, you can see here, it shortens the charging time and of course it can reduce the range of the vehicle a little, so which if you're stretching that last one out a little bit to a charger, don't put this on if you're worried about the last two miles, but I'm going to start preconditioning it while we plug it into the charger, so let's do that, it should be able to plug in and charge, one thing.
I also need to do, I think it's actually open the charging port here. I don't think there's an external way to do it, maybe I'll figure it out, but I don't think there's a little button like our e-tron has. so let's see, we have a short cable, a long cable, uh, companion session, so this is not a Lucid plug-in charging, this is just a free EA charging, let's plug this in here, we go and there, connecting to the vehicle now , our plan here. It's just refilling it with a small amount, just enough to get you to Mesquite.
I want to say five percent or so or so, because what I want to do is figure out not optimize this road trip, but how to recommend to other Lucid owners how to really optimize their trip and what I mean by that is that the total range of the car doesn't matter, the total charging time of the car doesn't matter, the only thing that matters is what state of charge you should get from a charger on a road trip and when is the reduction point when you should try to leave it how long that charging session lasts and how many miles you go after that now we should see around 175 kilowatts ideally because these are technically 175 kilowatt chargers with this high voltage, but sometimes there are other problems with these things and you can see that Lucid actually It already says limited charging power per station, so I like it.
I think it's cool to show that, hey, Lucid is asking for a lot more power than this, but the station can't. I don't give it what it was expected, it's a 100, you know, 50 kilowatt station, this car is probably asking for 300 kilowatts somewhere around here, so what we're going to do is charge it up a little bit more to get to Mesquite and then we should have a 350 kilowatt charger to test it. Now this is a bit risky because not all 350 kilowatt chargers can give all the amps we need, but with the high voltage of the Lucid Air we should be able to get most of it.
Interestingly, as soon as I started the car, the fans turned off, which tells me there is some logic to precooling. Basically, a hotter charging session is expected. I really like this light here that shows that we're pretty low. and it's going to fill up as the car fills up and, um, yeah, so I'll figure out how much range we need to get to Mesquite, but let's just accelerate a little bit here, nice ionic rolling in here, the Lucid charge, uh, we're ready to go Let's go. , we've been charging for five minutes, we put 13 kilowatt hours on it, 144 kilowatts peak, we just needed a little recharge to do Mesquite, so that's literally it and I think we'll have a good software or a good amount of state of charge. reserve for when we get there, so let's get out and go to the Mesquite self-charging port, closing the door, we put in 13 kilowatt hours totally free, five minute charging stop to Mesquite and then hopefully we'll get there pretty low. 28 should be an hour.
To go, I'll try to drive it fast because I think we have too much in the tank, so conversely, thank you foreigner, I've never been to this station before, I don't think so and the situation doesn't look good, it seems. My plan has failed. The two 150 kilowatt units seem fine and working with this 350 kilowatt station is obviously not possible. This one initially seemed fine, but now, um, yeah, it doesn't look so good, there's no lease that's failing. I know nothing. nothing looks right so I'm going to plug this in and see if it works. I doubt it, but it's worth a try, so I'm going to move the car forward a little.
I just checked not to scratch this and see if we can get this one working, if not then we wasted a ton of time and I'm hooking it up to a 150 and my whole experiment is ruined but I want to sit for a while while this car charges. and tell you my initial thoughts, my initial, you know, I've done about 300 miles on this so far and tell you all about the driver assistance, the noise, all the good stuff, so let's see if we can charge it and I'll give it to you. A little update on the halfway trip, we are at an eight percent state of charge right now.
I'm going to try to connect to this 350 kilowatt unit and hope we can get power even though this screen is dead, let's see what's really going on here. if it does we're going to click on communication with the car flashing white oh that's not right the red car has turned red and says authentication error unplug and plug back in yeah I guess this isn't going to work all well. I'll just connect to 150, so this is great now that most of these stations will be removed in the coming months and replaced with new ones. I'm just trying again to be doubly sure, but I'm guessing this will be.
I really wanted the 350 kilowatt unit to work here, but worst case scenario is 150 and then I think I'm going to think about staying somewhere nearby, we'll have what to see I'm getting quite tired. I'm thinking this didn't air like last time, he says getting ready to charge, okay let's see what happens, yeah I think he's just getting ready, we'll see if the timer runs out. I'll let you know what happens, well it doesn't. Unfortunately I used the 350 kilowatt units so I'll open the charging port and we'll just deal with the 150 and not the end of the world, we could do a quick recharge while I tell you a little about the car and then find a hotel nearby , oh hell I may need to stop a little longer, maybe I can use the long cable on this one, yes I can use the long cable on this one, long cables are the way to go for these loads. ports that are on the side, but I think EA can't get enough of them, so sometimes they put a long cable and a short cable on these things.
It seems to me like they're just taping these things together until new units come in, but here we go, communication contactors going as expected, preparing to charge, all good. You know, there are no questions with the load here, but I can never get full power. This is the typegreat power, so my plan is to break this thing, drive it hard, burn the juice. I want to introduce Salina practically dead. I want to see below 10 percent, we'll see if I can be that. Inefficient in this car is a challenge, but the goal here is to take a look at the load, maybe take it on another road trip and optimize it for a road trip speed.
There is a Volvo plug-in hybrid with the hatch open. the combustion engine doesn't work that well, they should have just plugged it in, but it's quite expensive, too expensive for a plug-in hybrid, two dollars an hour to charge it here and in a plug-in hybrid you don't get as much benefit. You'd have to wake up in the middle of the night, it's not worth it, which is why a fast charger on board is nice anyway. I digress, let's jump into the lucid air and head towards Salina Utah, somewhere that way, I think or think about this. in the exact opposite direction than I originally pointed, you know, I don't have a good sense of direction and I'm not a good door knocker, so this is what we should do, we should take a look at this leg, so I'm going to go to the vehicle trip settings and I'm going to leave trip b as all ours.
I'm going to reset the trip to there we go and the default is 3.2 miles per kilowatt hour auto in 68 degree weather auto seats with air conditioning, hell yeah. we're trying to burn the juice let's be inefficient surfing abroad around here no dream drive has been updated to the Lucid so I don't see any difference with this software version at all so maybe we just wasted 40 minutes for nothing more Hopefully the software will be available soon, even if it works fine, right? Right now we're only going 10 plus and we're very quiet, very comfortable but not very efficient at these 1.5 miles per kilowatt hour speeds, but we're going uphill and I did. strong acceleration merging onto the highway, so I guess that's to be expected, but let's enjoy these views on this stretch and I'm going to burn this off as we head towards Salida.
There's also a software issue, a little overlap here, just so many. a new software crashes actually, like when I reach the temperature, it doesn't show up here immediately every time and then the sync continues, ah come on, I said this is the problem with the car, the hardware is good, just create the software. work on this big update they keep talking about, you better fix all this, otherwise man, I don't know, I don't know if they can do all this, we'll see. I'm cautiously optimistic as I would. Let's say foreign foreign foreign Utah we are at a four percent charge state with 3.7 miles to go.
I've been driving the car really hard at 2.4 miles per kilowatt hour after the big drop, so I've really been messing around trying to get it together. It's a nice, warm thing. I just felt the climate control turned off at five percent. It is no longer preconditioning the battery pack, although it says to cancel preconditioning. Maybe it's set up to precondition the life of the truck. This thing looks sick. van doit.com oh, these are great Nice mods, um, so let's think about this real quick. Can I put the climate control on or are we out of climate control at four percent, which doesn't make sense because even at four percent this thing has more range than my full Nissan Leaf.
Let's hit the weather and see if I can force it back. The answer is no, so the four percent state of charge of the weather has gone well, that's a little awkward um let me turn this off Lucid I'm driving it out of spec style I have enough buffer to get to the charger I want it This air conditioning is running I also hear the AC compressor still running so I think it is still pre- My cooled seat conditioning is on, very impressive performance. Let's keep right to take exit 56 towards I-70 and let's go in and right, all right.
Thank you so much. He hasn't spoken this entire trip until now. I think I can turn it off. with this very impressive performance here, even with a low state of charge, look at that good acceleration, really amazing, I'll just regenerate it a little bit, it will recover the voltage and really strong performance at very high speeds, this thing is incredible. Desert Blaster I'm not kidding, this is not the performance one and has such a strong sustained velocity. At the top, it's not exactly the same as my Plaid, but they do have one that competes with the Plaid, which is the performance version, and then they also have the trimotor, so I'm not questioning Lucid's technology here, this number of efficiency.
You can just be inefficient in the car which is like any electric car, so we're going to go into neutral here and use the friction brakes to slow down. I want to connect to the Signet charger with the lowest possible state of charge. I also need to roll down the window a bit, that's going to be bad for the video, but it's hot in here, we have a huge greenhouse and the air conditioning is turned off so you can see. burning a little bit of power, I'm using the friction brakes to slow down, I'm using the power to cool the battery and, um, yeah, three percent state of charge on the charger, which is fine for me and a bit of regeneration there.
Moving smoothly back to the drive, let's plug it into the Signet drive and see what kind of power we can get. I preconditioned the battery from the moment I left the hotel, so this thing has been preconditioned the entire time we have a battery completely Open the Signet station right there, these things should give us the power I've had taikon charging at 270 kilowatts on these . I hope I have never charged an electric car with more than 300 kilowatts before this may be the fastest charging session I have ever had. experienced before, I'm actually very excited, this has been what I've been waiting for the whole trip, lower the car, get some fast charging speeds, we want to figure this out, oh, I love the steering too, even at low speed. even at Sprint it's really nice, so there's that cool truck, we're going to hook this thing up to a 350 kilowatt Signet, they all seem to be online, this is a 350 and then we can always pull that one too if we need to lift it, it should raise the camera there we go and it tells us how many inches we are in the park right there at the end oh boy this might be the fastest charge I've ever experienced let's climb it well let's turn off the air conditioning actually so it's off . that discount one, um, what am I trying to do?
Charge the car, low battery, three percent, travel on the road correctly. The car originally thought we'd get here with 20. Sorry, I drove it in a non-traditional way, uh, and it's a companion session, so I know at least plugging in and charging will work. We still have to try plugging and charging the Lucid with its native plug and charge, but maybe once EA starts charging their chargers again, we'll be fine, let's do this. Hell yeah, bro, I can't. wait, it's a little windy out here, no doubt about it, I have to open the charging port, so let's do it by pressing this button right there, boom and charging port opening to life, wonderful little charger, you have no idea what awaits you.
It seems that no one has been paid recently and we are connected in communication. Damn, I have no idea what to expect here. I hope there are big numbers getting ready to charge, oh man this is freaking awesome, where the hell here we go. I am preparing another phone to take photos. I really hope this gives us energy. I hope I have the battery back to a good temperature. uh-oh authentication error, unplug and replug what is supposed to be the fastest charging. I've experienced it before and it doesn't work well hmm, the charger still says it's connecting, maybe it just needs more time anyway.
I don't mind letting the battery sit a little and cool for a second. I'll let you know when I started charging I plugged it in with the other handle now let's hope it works worst case scenario we can go to the other Signet next to this one getting ready to charge come on baby oh authentication error what the hell oh boy okay we'll move on to one so I've learned that if you just touch the bottom corner of this cargo lid, it opens, so you don't need to get in the car every time. These are the things you learn from living with the car.
Well, we've moved. wow good luck charger now you don't know what awaits you maybe I shouldn't say that that's why the other one got scared and didn't charge well connecting remember to take your key with you preparing to charge come on honey come on don't give me an authentication error we want load, I don't know what to do if this one doesn't work, I spent, oh my god, authentication error, maybe what I need to do is disable the plugin loading. the car because I think I heard of an issue where it's supplemental charging and Lucid plug-in charging uh, and it's not just Lucid, it's all of these, so how do I do this?
Find out how to turn off the plug and charge well. Now I started the loader from my app, but the loader hasn't seen it probably because it's an add-on loader and that's opening. Okay, I'm going to take this one because the handles in the shade hoping this works, fingers crossed, come on now, let's see if Lisa tries to send the plug and charge request getting ready to charge, come on baby, I'm making you wait all with me because this is the real world. Electrify America tries to do a good thing by making their chargers free and then the car tries to say "Hey this is how you build me first" and the charger says "I don't need billing" the car is like "yeah" error of authentication, well actually we might be Stuck here if I can't turn off the plug and charge, what the heck, okay what the heck, so I'm racking up an hour of being here experiencing plugging and unplugging and honestly I don't think there's anything What we can do to solve it. car to charge right now, thing is fine, first of all, the car is at a three percent state of charge, it has climate control, so it's very hot, maybe it's a good thing because yes, we could turn this off with air conditioning but anyway um it's for love I love this charging stock beautiful views couldn't ask for a better place to be stranded totally safe great food I'm fine the problem is uh what happens is when we plug in the car says Hello, I am a lucid air here is the account that you must bill and it is the free charge and the charger says no, I am free uh and the cars do not know how to handle that and then we put the strange thing is EA and I spend the last 40 minutes on the phone going back and forth experimenting, we even put the charger in completely normal mode, which should be the default for the Lucid plug and charge payment.
I basically took the charger out of the free sale and who knows if it's a backend issue in their Why are these on add on charge but that didn't work at all so it seems like the only way to get this to charge at this point it would be, I guess, try to turn off the plug and charge on the Lucid, which I have a call their engineers, uh, thanks, you know, good luck, I have contacts there, what would a normal person do? I have no idea, which is why we're trying to figure this out here so you don't have to if you're clear-headed and running.
In this problem, you would simply call the support helpline. I guess anyway I called some Lucin guys and they said, "Oh yeah, we don't know, so everyone's looking into it right now, so I guess what I do." What I'm going to do is have lunch, maybe edit some videos, maybe I should do a full video on this once I figure out how we can load it or if we really can't, we have to tow the car to try. Start thinking about other options Start looking for shared outlets to see what's around Doesn't seem like much around here This is something like It's been a long time since I've been stranded at a charging station.
I hope we can resolve it. I found a way to make this work though, so it's okay, EA just called and said I should try charger three, leave the plug in and charge. I think we woke up the entire company lucid and EA, I just don't know how. A normal person could get that kind of access to that kind of thing, because I'm so lucky that you guys watch my videos and follow my Twitter and we're starting to cash in no fucking way, yeah, everything you did worked, yeah sir . starting charging yeah, getting ready to charge, welcome driver, oh now let's see if we can get some big speeds here folks, the air conditioning compressors go up in the car, I'm at 350 kilowatts, oh honey let's see some speeds, wow , that took an hour, it was crazy. 130 kilowatts 190 200. 230 250 officially not nearly the fastest I've ever charged 260.
This is a good reward, a really good reward, hell yeah bro, okay, I'll let you know if it reaches a higher number. I really want to see more than 300. Might need some voltage for that, I'll keep an eye on it of course. I will have proof ofofficially full charge, the fastest I've ever charged, 272 kilowatts. I just saw 273. uh, I think the fastest I've seen on Taikon is 271, so this is officially my fastest charging session. Awesome, this is cool now. I'm guessing the battery must have cooled down a bit or we're just not in the percentage range where you can get full power.
We'll have to see how far it goes, but I'm excited, so I just met the guys who have this truck, they're awesome and all these cool rigs here are actually coming in like paragliders and they're filming a TV series about it, which will be great and everyone was interested. the Lucid so I grabbed some Smart Waters we're already charged up to 46 wow that's pretty good 155 kilowatts at 46 that's not so good okay not much of a robust charging curve here but again temperatures play a role , it's the first charge we have a lot to figure out with this um man it would be really interesting to run this on a Tycon considering the Tycon can charge at 270 kilowatts pretty deep so here are some stats we're finding even without the maximum charging power that I know this car can hold, we hit 50 percent in 15 minutes from three and I think the car actually showed two percent for a moment, but BMS had to be calibrated, so that's a pretty impressive 56 kilowatt hours in 15 minutes. we're at 49 percent uh I mean that's really amazing and keep that in mind because the car is very efficient if you drive it like a sane person yeah what's going on with the flies and the Lucid?
Why do you guys like this car so much? That's great, Raptor, there goes the truck. Yes, we are at 50 right now. Quickly I love that he ran, grabbed a Waters boom right up there. We're down to 144 kilowatts, which is less than what we'll get at a 150 kilowatt station. so I'm thinking now we're going to Green River, but I still think that this whole period of time where they're updating their network has left a couple of strange situations like this, somehow it happened to me with this car, but Yes, once your network is fully up and running and you are done with your updates.
I don't expect this to be a problem. I just did it at the wrong time, but they've been doing updates for the last three or four weeks or so. that, yeah, I mean, I have a road trip, I'm not going to not road trip, so I'm sure we have enough to get to Green River, maybe we have enough to get to Grand Junction up to 135 kilowatts at 52 percent hundred. It's really not that strong in my impression, but again this is the first charge, so many of you know how to calculate the charge of this car to do and to go, but definitely on a road trip charge it from zero to fifty and go al Here would be my recommendation: Let's start looking at charger distances, so the Grand Junction charger is 205 miles away and passes over Green River.
I don't know if I've ever done that on an electric car before and I feel like if there ever is one that shows the range that would be this 200 miles should be nothing for this so that's exactly what we're going to do, we're going to go directly to Grand Junction. I'll charge it up to maybe 60. 70 state of charge and just drive, you know, 80 85 miles per hour, the speed limit basically and see how it goes. I can always slow down if it doesn't look like we're going to make it, and of course I can always steer. towards Green River if it doesn't look like I'm going to make it, but 516 EPA miles, I guess that's 400 on the highway, you know, driving slowly, maybe 300 to 300 would be my impression driving here in the desert at pretty high speeds, like that which yeah, maybe 70 something like that, but Grand Junction, that's the next plan, stop, so the car seems to think we can leave now and arrive with 15,205 miles.
Wow, we're only on 59, this is a whole new world of roads. I'm going to be a little cautious as the storms approach and, uh, yeah, I'm honestly just catching up on messages and emails and stuff because I've been messing around with the Chargers for a while, so I say let's load up. up to at least 70 or 80 percent and then we'll take a nice cruise to Grand Junction, if we have more, maybe we'll let it pass, but keep in mind that Glenwood Springs is offline, it's somewhere around here and it's is updating with new sites so this is the last high power charger before we get there. to Edwards, which is pretty deep in the mountains, so I think we'll have to stop in Grand Junction, however I want the Lucid to capture its range estimate, predicted arrival estimate in real time, it seems. that we have to redo it, so there it says 15.
I'm going to finish, we're going to go here, go back to recent and then we'll press manage and that's the only way to update the arrival. re 16 uh state of charge, so that's an interesting little bug, look at this here, they come flying, how sick is that, what the hell, that's pretty sick. Where did this guy start from? You don't see that every charging stop, do you? That was incredibly cool, but still Yes, although we had some problems getting started, this was the fastest charging stop I have ever experienced. 273 kilowatts is the highest number, so for the first part of the trip, you know, I really wanted to test the car.
I was driving it hard, exhausting it trying to see if we could get more than 300 kilowatts. Charging didn't work. I'll do more testing later, I think for the second half of this trip, especially knowing there are a lot of older ABB chargers out there. this route and maybe not the charging hardware you already know that we should rely on for the fastest charging. I think we should drive normally, just cruise 75 80 85 miles per hour, speed limits 80 85 around here, so, yeah, I'm just going to cruise to see what this is. This does what efficiency would do in the real world when driving like I do on a normal road trip when I'm not trying to test the car, so that's what's going to happen in the next part of this test that we're going to do from here onwards.
Salina at 5300 feet elevation to Grand Junction, which I actually think is the same or lower, so there isn't much elevation gain, and it's actually not that windy even considering the storms coming, so it should be cool to see what this is. okay, it's actually taking too long to get to 80. I don't think we need it anyway. It was great to see the paragliders come in and yes, 77, we have more than enough power to get to Grand Junction. I expect 39 minutes, almost 100 kilowatt hours, 91 delivered to the car, yes, I'm curious to see how this charging curve develops in some more tests, we will push to stop charging, let's hope we don't run into any more of these problems, let's hope.
Whatever the problem was, it was fixed for all future Lucid people. Lucid told me they hadn't heard of the issue before or at least the person I spoke to wasn't aware of this because it was a major issue, but the owner of this car told me. that she experienced something like this and she actually had to go to a different station in her hometown. The problem when you are here is that there are no backup options. I don't even think there was a level two that I could extend it to with the car, my option was to go to the level one station there, but anyway, let's go to Grand Junction, we have some beautiful views in front of us, thanks foreigner , foreigner, welcome to Grand Junction Colorado, 204 miles, 3.6 miles per kilowatt hour.
It's about 275 watt hours per mile for the guys at Tesla. I'm here at Chipotle and decided to stop by to grab some food before

to the incredibly efficient charger here in the lucid air and again that was about 80 miles per hour. aisle sometimes a little more sometimes a little less but pretty much just navigating at 80 GPS accurately so it was about 82 83 indicated on the screen the speed limit is 80 again here at least in Utah and Colorado it drops to 75 , but still moving along pretty well and that wasn't preconditioning for the charger, just cruising with air conditioning, massaging the seat, turning on the vents, not trying to rev it at all and, like I'm trying to think of a Model S if I drove it like this, I would have to go a little slower.
I definitely have to back out some of the accessories. This thing is great with efficiency, no doubt, I think it's the king of efficiency for a luxury electric sedan and here we are. getting into it only took about a minute and a half two minutes to get the nice e-tron sport back with the orange calipers looking great. I think the other 350 is yes, the one just to the left of this car and it has pulled quite a bit. way to the left, so we'll just zoom in right here. Nice turning radius, I really like the look of that e-tron.
By the way, I love our e-tron. Great car, so here we are. 350 kilowatts, says supplemental load again. 200 miles we have. 24 left, it wasn't enough to extend it to Edwards again if Glenwood Springs, the next Charger was in line, we could easily extend it there, um, beautiful interior on this e-tron, too, that's a gorgeous spec I can just tap here , there we go, it will open, um, sure, if Glenwood Springs was open, that would have been my stop so you can easily make a Salina to Glenwood Springs in this car, which is just crazy, I mean, very efficient considering the speeds these are the speeds here on this stretch and I very rarely skip Green River if ever uh and it looks like we're connecting to the vehicle and everything is fine so let's hope everything works out.
I'm thinking you could prepare yourself. for charging like we'll see a big speed probably not at 24 it's probably too high for a big number um but yeah let's see what kind of power we get out of this thing getting ready to charge okay the contactors are working and we're squeezing that's how it should be and it wasn't an add-on load so I don't think EA hacked into their network to get this car to drive because I really don't think that's a representative result of how to go down the road e-tron man. Drivers always charge very high, they are at 90 percent, but that thing charges so well on top that there is no reason not to charge the power limited by the station, it only wants to give 71 kilowatts, which is probably the same limitation of amperage that you would get on a 400. volt car at about 30 35 kilowatts so maybe this is a handle limitation and that charger is dead and the one all the way to the right I think is offline so We may be stuck at 72 kilowatts for now, but at least the car is pretty efficient, we just need a little more to get to Edwards, maybe 40 percent and I have to have lunch, so I guess we'll charge it up to 72 kilowatts, It's better than sitting around like we did in Salina and I'll check again.
If that 150 is in line there and of course the Audi should move soon, all the things that can happen, but at least we're getting paid, so we've been here at Sam's Club, met some of our viewers, a guy stopped. on a model and to test the CCS adapter, another viewer here, welcome to YouTube and do you mind if I put your dog on the camera? What was his name? Rio Rio is obviously a retriever and he's good, so he goes to competitions and smokes everyone, so this is Rio's ionic five and, yeah, he's just drinking juice on his way home anyway.
Lucid is charging at 85 percent state of charge, very slow, charging in the pack, very slow, it's been at about 40 45 kilowatts since we got to 80. here we're down to 40 kilowatts at 85 and again, the power of charge delivered to the battery pack has to be somewhere in the 30s, so okay, not the best, but since I started talking and wanted to eat some of my Chipotle, it was like I let this thing work, maybe Maybe I can get back to Fort Collins, which, looking at my watch here, is about a thousand feet higher than where we are, so we have to go all the way up.
Rocky Mountains to the top of Vail Pass over the Eisenhower Tunnel and then we'll lose all that elevation,

heading

down to Denver, as long as we can get to the top of Vail Pass or should I say the top of the Eisenhower Tunnel. It's all downhill from there and I think we could squeeze this all the way out, we've got 3.6 miles per kilowatt hour to get here at 80 85. I think actually over the Rocky Mountains, the first part is going to be brutal, but I'm just going to take it easy and see how far I can stretch it, so I think what I'm going to end up doing is loading it up to maybe just 90 percent and then see if I can stretch it all the way home, that would be really awesome.
If that's possible, okay, I just got a quick call and yeah, yeah, the car is more than loaded, we're at 95, so it looks like it's still doing pretty well at the top, let's take a look, yeah, about36 kilowatts, so if it once hit 80, it just sits at 40. I was here for, say, a little over an hour talking to people having lunch, what can you do? You can't do an optimized charging stop, but the car was charging the whole time and, um, this will be interesting. because it took an hour to go from 35 to 95, so I think the top of the pack doesn't load great, but again they're using the whole pack, what I really care about is the zero to forty, the zero to 50 for travel hard on the road the cooling fans have gone out I'm really falling in love with this thing I'm really falling in love with this thing so let's rock and roll see if we can stretch it home almost fully loaded all the way to the Fort Collins cars with a charge status of 95, let's see what it says for Miles.
I'm going to go here to see how the screens turn on right away. It was a problem with the previous software that now activates, so that's good, what am I trying to do? It shows distance units of 490 miles of range, so it says we don't even need to charge to get home, so let's put it on and maybe this will be our last stop. I'll tell you the statistics of the trip so far. if I go here to the vehicle trip information, I'm learning the three point system, 190 feet, well, 3.1 miles per kilowatt hour for the entire trip, that's impressive considering the high speeds at the beginning, 3.6 in the last leg, I will restart the trip.
I'd love to. There is also a load since last time. I've been asking others to do that and I like that you can show that here on the screen as well. I really think it's cool, so let's tune out, that's it, let's rock all the way home. I have no idea what to expect if we can do this or not at 95. I think we can. I really believe we can. That would be impressive and I wonder how much will be left. I promise I won't burn the extra like crazy. speed. I'm going to drive it fairly normally to get home, so let's go back, let's go home.
I think I'm already home, but I already had a navigation destination there, let's go and the calculated boom gives me two options to get home, oh one. It's the winding road option, but that adds an extra two hours, but it would be a lot of fun. I'll take him to Canyons later. Let's do the 9:36 p.m. m., which would be the normal route home, crossing I-70 towards Denver and more. to Fort Collins 311 miles to go I really think it won't be a problem. I'll just drive it normally. There are plenty of chargers on the way as rescue if we need it, but we're going to take this sucker down and do whatever. lucid air is meant to do, which is Big Range, holy smokes.
I have never once in any car thought about leaving Grand Junction Colorado to return home and not stopping again and in fact I just heard those guys over there say wow that's a nice foreign foreign car thank you thank you foreign foreign foreign
