Mach-E Charging 101 - The basics of charging your EV!

Apr 29, 2024
Hi, I'm Patrick and this is Maki's Vlog. We have made many Maki videos. There are many loading videos out there, but today we're going to focus on loading 101. We'll just go over the

basics

. Charging If you're new to Maki or new to EVS, we'll cover the first things you need to know about

charging

, so let's get to the first question I'm often asked about Macky and

charging

is, how long does it last? it needs to charge right, that's a complicated answer, but we're going to try to make it really simple, it depends, although of course here's

your

charging port and now we're showing that this is the connector that you would normally use. for most charging, this is a level one, level two, j1772 as it's known and then there's fast charging, let me go here to the front of the car.

I keep my portable charger up here. You may or may not have a portable charger if you have one. this is a great place to store it there is a connector that I would plug into the car and then on the other end there are two different types of connectors that we will talk about the first one is like the normal plug that goes into any type of outlet that you have at home and

your

car will charge, just like any other appliance you have, this is level one charging, it's 120 volts, it's the slowest, it's only used as kind of an emergency, uh, because it's very slow, it'll take you days to get a Full charge, it adds about 3 miles of range per hour, but depending on the model, it could have over 300 miles of range, so you can see it would be like 100 hours to charge.

More Interesting Facts About,

I switch here, let me take out the other connector and of course this thing actually plugs in here. I have the other one here and this is a 240 volt outlet and a lot of times you can have this on your in your garage sometimes the dryers use this mostly it's like RVS it's higher wattage and it plugs into the portable charger here some Chargers only use this plug, which is a type of plug that you know, now we're at level two, this is the most common. If you're lucky enough to be able to charge at home or at work, this is the type you'll do most often.

Many people want to know exactly how long it takes to charge. This is what I just said. For people, it charges overnight or if you charge it at work, it will charge while you're at work, it will basically take you from whatever you're doing to overnight for the most part and you'll also be able to find some of those level two chargers at the grocery stores in the malls, there are some of them available, some are free, some you have to pay for, but for the most part, that's all you need to remember, if you have access to the level two and for a long period of time you can plug it in like when you get home from work and it will charge the next morning or if you are charging it at work you plug it in and then when you leave you will have a full charge if you are like at a grocery store, you can go 20 to 30 miles while you shop and that's it, which brings us to the last one I want to mention and that's DC fast charging, so those are the ports down here.

It's a bigger connector, it's faster charging and this is what we've used. If you've seen any of our road trip videos, we've done a lot of charging with fast chargers. We document almost every single one of them and that one will get you from 10% capacity to 80% capacity, which is what you generally want to do when you're on a road trip in about 35 minutes, so it's pretty quick to get a big reach pretty quickly and I want to take note. Although when talking about fast charging, there are different speeds of fast chargers, basically ranging from 50 Kow to 350 kW.
Chargers, you don't need to go into all the details of all that, just know that Maki depends on what model you have it can charge up to 115 or 150 Kow, so any charger that is below can work, any charger that is above will really work but you won't get any extra benefits so if you know you're on a 350 Kow charger you don't expect to get 350 Kow if you're using a 150 Kow charger that's when you get a 35 to 40 minute charge but if you're using a 50 kilowatt charger, you should extend that time. It will take you about an hour and a half to get a charge.
Luckily most stations are upgrading now to where they have a lot of 150's and some stations are now changing to all 350 Kow stations so if you are looking for a quickie. graphic like you're out and about during the day pretending like maybe you're a rideshare driver and you're doing many, many routes to and from the airport or whatever and you need to charge during the day, this is perfect, you can get in, you can, you can plug in the car, go get something to eat, come back and the Char will be the car, it'll be fully charged, so it's great to use fast charging in those scenarios.
Now the next question I get frequently. Of course, how do you find these chargers if you need to go charge somewhere while you're out or on a road trip? Well, Ford Pass makes it pretty simple: it's the app that's on your phone that's associated with your Maki, so you just click on map and then click on Chargers and it will start charging the chargers that are in the area and quickly I just want to show you some of the features of using the Ford Pass app. First of all, you can notice that next to the rays there are like little Dash Lines, the more dash lines you have, the faster the loader will be, so if we click on let's see, let's go to the very fast filter or loading speed, you'll see it's three dashes it's ultra fast two dashes is fast charging so that's up to 120 kilowatts and then your normal charging is basically like your level two charging is one dash so if you need to hit the road quickly, you can just look for the ultra-fast one that they, uh, you know you're Okay, but you still just need a fast charge, you can do the fast one and then if you're looking for a regular charge, you can do that too.
I also want to mention here that you have Red Ford and this is the Red Ford blue oval charging will not have any Ford sticker on the chargers. There are several charging companies that Ford has partnered with and what that means is that you can handle all the billing that you don't have. You don't have to install the app for that particular station, you can activate charging and track your billing all in the Ford Pass app, so it's great to see if you don't have those apps, those chargers on the Ford network. You can also install those apps on your phone and another really cool thing is that you can check out the ones that are free.
Where can you do that with Gash? You can't do it now. I have to admit that there are a lot of them. There are some that can be charged for free, but sometimes you will find that level two chargers are free, like if you go to a grocery store or a department store, they will have free charging, so you won't they'll give you a big charge but it's really cool that it's free now let's look at the sync screen because you can also find them there to get to the screen and find the chargers you just tap home and then it's in navigation and then you just tap where two and There is a shortcut down. here for Chargers and this will be very similar to what we saw in Ford Pass, it will show them all on the map.
You will also have the filter so you can make the fastest ones with three dashes, the fastest ones with two dashes. or just level two, let's go back and we'll show them all and if you want the filters, you can also tap on the top right and you can filter by the ones that are free or free or if you just want to. staying within the Ford Network again means that you don't have to have any additional apps or anything like that and you can see that there are still quite a few out here from the different charging station operators so it's very easy to find them and Then the last thing which I wanted to show you, if you want to plan a trip, you can also do that very easily and you can do it in the Ford Pass app.
I didn't go over that, but it's there on the maps as well, but let's go to San Francisco as an example, we click on that, it's calculating this and adding the loading steps, it stops as we go and if we press, we obey the traffic laws, let's be alert and use voice commands while driving, uh, we. By pressing details it added three chargers for one hour and 25 minutes of charging and will show me the list of chargers where I need to stop and how much I need to charge at each station as well as how long it will take.
Each station is very easy to find charging, everyone also wants to know how much it costs to charge well, as you can see you can even search for free charging so it can be free. Charging at home is usually a little cheaper than driving. A gasoline car costs perhaps a quarter to a third of the cost of driving a gasoline car if you are charging on the road and public chargers vary greatly in their cost, but can be close to what a gas car costs. gasoline it would be, but I hope you know that you can do many other economic burdens to compensate for that.
Now one of the best things is that you can track the charging cost very easily, as if the car keeps track of each charging session and keeps a record. in the Ford Pass app makes it super easy to see how you know how much energy you're using and how much that energy is costing you. If you stay within the blue OV network, it will send you an email receipt every time you charge in public, so that's another way to track things and you know the third party apps, if you have to use network chargers Oval charging pads that are not blue in color, these will also generally keep track of all your charging sessions and costs. associate so if you're a rideshare driver and you need to keep track of that stuff for your business expenses that's really helpful if you're like me and I like to keep all that organized and tracked that's really helpful too so yeah If you want that information it is very easy to track it using only the tools that are available on Maki, if you have the charging at home of course it is very simple to start charging just plug it in and it will start charging but a lot of people have asked how you can go and charge at a public charging station because a lot of them are like in the parking lot or hidden next to a restaurant or whatever, so how do you activate the charging there?
Well, the good news. It's like with a regular gas pump, most charging stations have a credit card reader, so you can literally just swipe your credit card or tap it to start a charging session. Many of them also have an app that is on that network, so you like to download the app, click start within the app and it will start the upload session, so it's pretty easy if they are on the network of blue oval loading and again I showed you how to define them, they are quite easy because you can do it. all that same activation within the Ford Pass app, so you just click on the location you're in, select the individual charging station you're connected to and press Start Charging, then it connects and you're done. now Ford has done even better with Electrify America - they've set it up so you can do plug-in charging once you've configured the settings in your app with an Electrify America station, you can literally do the same thing I did here at Home , you plug it in and the connector starts charging, of course the fast charging stations are a little bigger, but it's still the same process.
You plug it into the car, it starts charging and you can go about your business, so it's very easy. Well, that's it for our cargo. Video 101. We hope you found this video helpful. If so, give it the thumbs up. We can go into much more detail about the load. If that's something you want, leave a comment below and we'll do another follow-up video and make it much longer. It goes into all the nitty gritty details about charging, but that's enough for this one. We wanted to keep it short so thanks for watching if you liked it please like hit the subscribe button hit the notification bell to be notified if We make another upload video and live would say whatever you drive even whether you charge it at level one, two or quick charge, enjoy the ride.
