Centuries ago there was a man named Marcion and he started a heresy called Marcion ISM and his idea was that the god of the Old Testament and the god of the New Testament are two different gods. He said that the God of the Old Testament is harsh and cruel and the God of the New Testament is kind and loving and he preached a Christianity that abolished the Old Testament. Unfortunately, I have to say that in our generation there is a resurgence of Marcion's ISM and even evangelicals say that we don't need the Old Testament, we can eliminate it. with the New Testament it is the Bob of Christians, but I want to say very clearly and strongly that the God of Israel is the father of Jesus, they are the same God and even Paul said that the Old Testament was written for the good and the Christians so that we can learn from his example so that we can realize that the god we are worshiping is the same God and he will deal with us the same way he dealt with the Jewish people and that is why we read the Old Testament.

I have loved the Old Testament for years. I dedicated my life to getting people excited about every book of the Bible and not just their favorite book. If you ask me what my favorite book of the Bible is, it's the last one I read, it's the last one I studied and that becomes my favorite. for a few weeks until I get into another book, so tonight we're in one of the smaller books of the Old Testament that a lot of people ignore except for a few quotable quotes. There are verses in this little prophet that many preachers quote, but there are none.

There are many who know the entire book and the story behind the book. I teach people to read the Bible one book at a time because it is not one book, it is a library of 66 very different books and only when you start to look at the book as a book will you understand everything that is in that book and when you do the crucial question why this book was written and when you get the answer to that question, you will have the key that will unlock the entire book and its riches for you and you will be able to study the Bible. an exciting journey of discovery many years ago there was a rather unusual sitcom series on your television centered on a mobile military hospital in Korea which comedy theme was called mesh, I think, and one of the favorite characters in it was called clinger , the beautiful nickname for someone and the heat in Hebrew for clinger is Habakkuk, so now you know what his name means and he was a man who was a clinger and normally human throwers are not very popular, they cling to you, you know Who am I referring to? and what I mean is that when people cling to God, something starts to happen and Habakkuk was a slinger with God and he clung to God, he argued with God, he never wanted to be a prophet, he never intended to be a prominent .

He didn't want to be a preacher, he didn't want to talk to anyone else, but he did talk to God and took his complaints to God and argued with him. Now, never try that because you won't win the argument and he didn't, but that's how he got to a message that we'll look at tonight and tomorrow night is one of the most relevant

One we will not die, O Lord, you have appointed them to execute judgment or you have dug them out of the rock to punish. Your eyes are too pure to see evil. You cannot tolerate evil. Why then do you tolerate traitors? Why are you silent while the wicked devour? You have made those more righteous than them like fish in the sea like sea creatures that have no ruler and the evil enemy drags them all with hooks, catches them in his net, gathers them in his net and therefore rejoices. and he is bled, therefore he sacrifices to his net and burns incense to the net, because by his net he lives in luxury and enjoys the choicest. ruled if he continues to empty his net destroying nations without mercy.

I will raise my guard, says Habakkuk and parked. She was in a car accident and had terrible injuries and for the rest of her life she was in constant pain and she suffered a lot and one night. She was so fed up with God that she said God why did you leave me with all this pain and she complained and finally cursed God and while she was doing it in her room she tripped over a piece of carpet on the floor and landed. in bed unconscious and the next thing he knew a very bright light was shining on his face and he thought he was in heaven and in front of God and he felt that the last thing I did on earth was the damn God, but then he realized that he had done it.

She was unconscious during the night and it was the morning sun coming through the window on her face and she started to apologize to God for what she had said and thanked him that she was still alive after cursing him and then she was unconscious. Get up from the bed. and she walked for the first time in years without any pain and she was totally here, my God, she has God and she ended up healed. I am not defending that order and I am not writing in a book how to be healed, it just curses God. first but she was honest with God and complained to him and that is the best thing you can do and of course this is what Habakkuk was doing but what was she complaining about, she was complaining about the state of God's people and the City . of God Jerusalem for God's people had fallen into idolatry and immorality and the king of Israel was leading his people down the hill towards a wrong life, he had built himself a larger palace and reduced the cost of relief services society to obtain the money to build his palace and the gap between the rich and the poor became great, it became increasingly greater and justice did not prevail, the law was discredited and the people did not receive justice and, above all, violence filled the streets of Jerusalem, so people did not walk the streets at night and even during the day the elderly did not like going out in public very much this strike and he tells them that this was a condition of the city of God and of God's people in it had had many failures in both belief and behavior, but this was one of the worst led by the king and this was God's people and God was apparently not doing anything about it, it was just happening on its own. and Habakkuk had been complaining to God for up to 20 years about the situation.

It is a long time to spend praying a complaint to God, but he persisted and said: God, why do you make me look at injustice and violence? You're not doing anything about it. I'm praying about it but it's getting nowhere, why and that little word keeps showing up in Habakkuk's prayer why God why why and I'm always comforted by the fact that Jesus himself on the cross said why God why what have you left me and why is a very common word to use when talking about God why God there is chutzpah behind this that we think we know better than God that we know what he should be doing and it's as if we are saying God, If I were running the word world, I would do a better job than you, which is an incredible thing to imply, but we do it and people do it to me very often.

I get it, why did God allow this? Why does God take my partner? Why did you allow cancer? Why did you do this? I do not understand goodbye. I could do better than God if only I were in charge. I am an advocate of what I call the Questioner II Prayer. You know what I mean? You've heard a lot about intercessory prayer, that's one thing and it's an important thing, but Questioner E's prayer, I hope you get close enough to God to use it. By that I mean asking God questions and waiting for a response and that opens up a two-way conversation that you don't ever think you'll win an argument with God and never think you won't get a shock or surprise in return when He answers. You see? I make a distinction between what some people call answered prayer, which is a prayer. that gets a result I call answered prayer a prayer that gets an answer in other words, I said to the Lord Lord, I would love to drive a big Cadillac and the Lord said no, David, I'm not going to give it to you. an answered prayer, have you received the message?

Nowdo you know what I mean. An answered prayer is one that gets an answer, not necessarily the result you want, but an answer and a response from God is a wonderful thing. Well, now, what was God's response? Open your eyes. Habakkuk look at the nation, if you only look at your own nation you will not see the answer, look at the whole world, look at history, get a broad view, get out of this tunnel vision that only looks at America or only looks at Britain . Look at what's happening elsewhere and see what's happening and discern what I'm doing.

You know it's very exciting when you discover that the story is his story and you read your newspaper with new eyes to get a broader view of what God is doing. I simply learned this lesson. I will share this testimony with you years ago. I took a group of church members to Israel on a trip. tour I used to take them out 50 for 50 and they said they would learn more from me in two weeks in Israel and six months with me and in the pulpit and I think that's true, but I took them out and then they went home.

A few more days of Israel alone before another group of 50 church members came out and joined me and I would show them around and my wife returned with the first group and the last thing she told me before getting on the plane in Israel. It was a silly question for her because he answered and said, I want you to tell him to come back to faith. Her father was a Methodist preacher and I want him to tell her to make friends with Menachem Bagan, the Prime Minister of Israel, as soon as she can, so I took out a sheet of hotel paper on the dear lady. Some friends from Jerusalem picked me up in Tel Aviv. to take me to his house in Jerusalem, where I would stay for a few days until the next group joined me and I said to them: could you take me to the post office first because afterward I had walked through the streets of Tel Aviv in the dark? God would do such a thing. and Habakkuk is complaining now but none of us would survive you won't have any people left no matter a city that is too strong a cure that is using a sledgehammer to do what I can't think of that I'll let you think of something but it's too much and it makes me you're asking Stein to pay attention and see that happen. Do you ask God questions? I was having a big debate at a university in Birmingham, you'd call it Birmingham at university for the older students and it was a debate. on the motion that Jesus is the only way to God and they asked me to propose that motion. Can you imagine a more ridiculous situation but in the debate there was a communist, an older man who stood up and actually attacked me with big guns and said you Christians, he said sit in the lifeboat on your way to heaven being saved and look at people like us drowning in the sea and you despise us and that's how it started and then he started attacking me as a Christian and he was getting really angry and I was writing notes on the back of an envelope that I can give the best I can and I was getting some really interesting answers for this communist and then I just stopped and said Lord, how do you feel about this man?

And I wished I had that because I burst into tears and I cried in a public debate in front of all the students at the university and then bless the Lord, he gave me a vision, a pretty silly little vision, and all I could do was just tell people what they could see and that completely changed the situation and then they voted on it and the president who presided. In the debates, I announced the result, 80% were against the motion that Jesus is the only way to God and all the audience shouted that he was wrong, 80% were in favor of the motion and he said: "I'm so sorry, I've made a terrible mistake." It's just that I never expected this motion to be passed and that's why he reported that it was lost but then he had to correct himself by saying that it passed well the clergyman who opposed me left absolutely angry and then I was busy advising students for a long time afterwards it was the best evangelistic meeting I've ever been to and the first student came forward and said he wasn't the Lord with this tonight and I said oh you're a Christian, well he said he wasn't when I came but I was so glad of having asked the Lord how you feel;

Otherwise I would have listened to the communists and we would have lost that debate, but I simply asked God how you feel and got an answer and cried for that poor communist when he realized it. that the Lord was grieving for him made all the difference, ask God questions, he can accept it, he would prefer that you curse him in the sense that you then say polite prayers and say what you think you should say to God, he wants you to be sincere with you. him because he wants to be honest with you and he will be and dear Klinger Habakkuk I'm sorry, dear Habakkuk he received his answer but he didn't accept it and still he said: I'm going to wait and see if that really is the answer because I don't think it is and then We left Habakkuk on his wall looking instead of talking and God was going to tell him go down into the street and write this on the wall the Babylonians are coming, you should be down there telling them. them what I told you don't question me again don't wait to see if I meant it you should go down there and he said write it in big letters so anyone running down this street can read it that's a possible meaning of the following nibble on it or write it down in letters so big that everyone can see it, put it on a wall, the Babylonians are coming and let's see how the people respond to it because until the last minute God always wants people to repent and when people repent, he will repent It's amazing to think that the Bible says that God repents, but it means that he changes his mind and the surprising thing is that prayer, humor, prayer can change God's mind, not for his eternal purpose but for his immediate action, our prayer can really do that.

Will not everyone mock him with mockery and contempt, saying woe to him who accumulates goods? robbed and enriches himself with extortion, how long will this last! Won't your debt suddenly arise? Won't they wake up and make you tremble? Then you will be his victim because you have plundered many nations. the people who remain will plunder you because you have shared the blood of man, you have destroyed lands and cities and all who are in them, woe to him who builds his kingdom with unjust profits to set his nest on high to escape the clutches of ruin! ruin of many towns, embarrassing your own house and losing your life, the stones of the wall will scream and the beams of the carpentry will echo.
