I've had the opportunity to listen to our Attorney General Jason Mayares and so it's in the spirit of what we've always done, whether it's Ted Kennedy and Bernie Sanders on the left or Ronald Reagan or George Bush on the right. We have come to Liberty to help us see what it means to be a champion of Christ and today it makes no difference and although we were able to hear from our governor of Virginia not long ago today, for you Floridians, today you can hear from our governor of Virginia . Florida's current governor, Ron DeSantis, grew up in Florida, grew up in a working-class family, worked his way through Yale and then Harvard Law School, while graduating with honors.
After graduating with honors, he entered the United States Navy where he served, was deployed to Iraq and served alongside the Navy Seals while there after returning from Iraq and after his service went on to represent our nation as a prosecutor federal and later became a congressman from Florida's 6th district before running. He ran for governor in 2018 and won not only then but also in 2022 and is currently serving as the 46th governor of the state of Florida. He and his wife Casey lived there. his wife Casey, a cancer survivor, a former Emmy Award-winning television host. have three three beautiful children and have the opportunity to lead that great state and I think for all of us who have the opportunity to know who Governor DeSantis is, there is no doubt that he has always been a person who fights for rights. that are granted not only by the Constitution but by rights that come directly from God.
He has fought for the freedoms of Floridians and in fact last night he was speaking in Ohio and he flew back to Florida and last night after the legislature. there in Florida passed the bill, signed the heartbeat protection law and by signing it, the law in the state of Florida will protect all unborn babies because it recognizes that life is a gift from God and that is why Governor DeSantis is our mission here. At Liberty we have always been singularly focused on raising champions for Christ and so we thank you today for coming to help inspire our students to become champions for Christ and whatever you can do, would you please join me in welcoming the 46th Governor of the State of Florida, Ron DeSantis, Foreign Liberty University, I bring you greetings from the free state of Florida and, just as a matter of personal privilege, I would like to thank many of you for thinking and praying for my family when my wife Casey Florida was first born.
This lady was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2021 and I can tell you this when we got the news and we were talking about it as a family deciding if this would be something we would make public in those days and maybe even a week where it was private, it was difficult, you didn't know what was going to happen, you have a mother of three very young children and you see that life can be very fragile, but I will tell you this when we publish the statement so that people know. that this is something that she was going to have to fight against the prayers that we received as a result of that lifted her spirit, she was able to go through excruciating treatment and surgery and I can tell you right now that she has never been healthier.
It has never been better, prayers have been answered and we are proud of what she did to be a role model for other women and we are proud of what she has done to help the great state of Florida. We are also proud of the role Florida has played in our country over these past four years when freedom and our own way of life and so many other jurisdictions across our land withered on the vine. Florida held the line we choose facts over fear, we choose education over indoctrination, we choose the law. in order over unrest and disorder when the world went crazy when common sense suddenly became a rare virtue Florida stood as a refuge of sanity a citadel of freedom for people throughout our country and indeed in everyone we faced attacks we took the hits we withstood storms, but we stood firm, we did not back down, we had the convictions that guided us and we had the courage to lead and thanks to our efforts, Florida now leads the nation, we are number one in the country in net migration, we are the first. the number one fastest growing state in these United States we are number one in new business formation, of course, we are number one in tourism, we are number one in economic freedom, we are number one in educational freedom, We are number one in parental involvement in education, and as proud as we are of that, it's important to note that none of that was predetermined when I ran for governor in 2018.
I ran as an underdog, a lot of people had told me ruled out, we were able to win the election, but we won the election by 32,000 votes. Out of over 8 million votes cast, that's less than half of one percent and if you look at the history of Florida, that was nothing out of the question. out of the ordinary in terms of how these races had gone if we go back 10 years 2010 14 12 16 18 presidential race the race for governor in Florida is almost always decided by one point and that's why they told me, listen, this state has a balance very valuable politician.
You got in by the skin of your teeth. Don't rock the boat, bide your time, keep your head down because I never know that if you get too excited about something, you could end up losing support and not be able to win elections in the future. I understood that advice and it wasn't crazy advice, but I still rejected it. My point of view is very simple. I got 50 percent of the vote, but that gave me the right to exercise 100 percent of executive power, and I intended to do that to advance an agenda that I believe was right for the state of Florida.
We wouldn't make that agenda based on finger pointing. in the wind or looking at the polls and, in fact, to this day, as Governor, I have never conducted a poll on any issue in all my time, leaders are not captive to the results of polls, leaders establish a vision, leaders execute that vision and leaders deliver results and When you do that, no matter what the previous polls were, you can change public opinion. People will support you if they see that you are doing a good job. We also understood that as Governor you can make the best decisions in the world.
They could have the best policies in the world, but if you don't have a group of people in your administration who share the mission and put the mission before their personal interests, none of this will end up happening. so we make it very clear to anyone who serves in our Administration, if you have any agenda other than what is best for the people of Florida, pack your bags right now and we will show you the door. We also said that we are not just going to sit back and try to avoid problems or wait for the problems to be resolved.
We don't want to get into things because we're worried about creating any kind of blowback. Whatever decision you make as a leader, there will be some people who will like it. There are other people who don't and some elected officials think well, if I just don't make decisions and I'm just not out and about, then fewer people will disapprove of some of the decisions you make. We have to be okay here, it's okay, we're okay, thank you, so sometimesThey just want to be in office and basically act like potted plants, well that's not what we were going to do in Florida.
I said we're going to go on the offensive. from day one we will make sure to identify issues where we are aggressive in raising issues that are important to the people of our state and I don't care what the media says, I'm going to do what I think is right and that is the framework of work that we did and we finally understood when we took office that when you are elected to an executive position you know that it should not be the same as being elected to some of these other positions, not that they are not important, but the number one quality that a executive is leadership and leadership is really about having the courage to make difficult decisions in the face of opposition and in the face of criticism, a leader must have the confidence to stand alone if the moment demands it and therefore what ended happening in Florida when we arrived we were clicking away doing a lot of things. cool stuff and then covid hit and that really changed everything and I had to make decisions as a leader: do I just go along with the crowd or do I look at these things myself and make decisions that are going to cut against the grain, yeah, it opens up?
I subjected myself to great criticism. No governor in this country was attacked more by Legacy Media and the political left than I was, but I had to make the decision. Do you know why you are in this? Are you in this to protect your own political skin? You have to be willing to put the interests of the people you represent before putting their jobs ahead of trying to protect your own job and that's what we did when we handled Covid. I didn't know how the political chips fell, but I was 100% willing to let it fall wherever as long as I could look in the mirror knowing I did what I thought was right, so let's fast forward to November 2022.
You know, we did it in our own way, we did it our way and The results were that we didn't win by just 32,000 votes, we won by over 1.5 million votes that we got. We are at the highest percentage of the vote that any Republican gubernatorial candidate has received in the history of the state of Florida. We won 62 percent of the Hispanic vote we want independence by 18 percentage points we were able to help secure supermajorities in the Florida House of Representatives and Senate we were able to help elect 29 conservative school board members across the state of Florida who defend parental rights and standing up for a good curriculum and now, after the 2022 elections, for the first time since the Civil War era, there is not a single Democrat elected to state office in the state of Florida and You can see in how people have voted with their feet and how they have decided to register to vote when I was elected governor there were almost 300,000 more registered Democrats than Republicans in the state of Florida and never in the history of Florida have there been more registered Republicans and Democrats, Well, when I was re-elected, not only did we have more Republicans and Democrats, but we had 300,000 more Republicans and Democrats in November, but understand, we were 300,000 ahead, so the train is still running, now we have 455,000 more Republicans and Democrats registered.
These are people who changed their registration, went from independent to R, went from D to r, a Legacy Media Outlet when they saw what happened with the elections and registration. Trends had a headline that said quote, no plan, no nothing, Florida Democrats desperate for future. I don't know about you, but if you are from my area and have my perspective, that is what you call winning and that is why we are doing it in Florida and as important as the elections of '22 were, the reality is that Americans have actually been Voting for many years, they have simply been voting with their feet and the results of that behavior have been as harsh as our landslide victory in November.
States and cities governed by left-wing politicians pursuing a left-wing ideology have seen crime skyrocket. They have seen their taxpayers abused, they have seen medical authoritarianism prevail, and they have seen fundamental American principles discarded. The woke agenda has caused millions of Americans to leave these jurisdictions in search of greener pastures. This has been a huge exodus of Americans. Florida has served as the most desired city. destiny a Promised Land of sanity and a world that has become increasingly crazy we have embraced Freedom we have maintained Law and Order we have protected parental rights we have elevated the importance of family and promoted a culture of life we have respected our taxpayers and we have rejected the woke ideology thank you, we fought woke in the legislature we fought woke and the corporations we fought woke and the schools we never surrendered to the woke mob we have made Florida the state where the wokeness is going to die The woke mind virus represents a war on merit, it represents a war on achievement, it is a form of cultural Marxism that seeks to use identity politics to divide Americans, but perhaps, above all, wokeness It represents a war against the truth and, as a leader, I do not.
I'm looking for adulation I'm not looking for any fanfare all I'm looking for is the search for truth now the truth is the key to leading a fulfilling life having a strong family a prosperous community and even a successful state and country the truth is enduring you can try to cover it up you can try to hide it you can try to distort it But as time goes by the deception and the lies fade and what is true remains yes the truth will set you free because awakening represents a war against the Truth that we must wage war on awakening is bad that a teacher at school tells second graders that they may have been born in the wrong body or that their gender is a choice thank you in Florida gender ideology has no place in our schools and if that means drinking at Disney to make sure that's the case we will it's wrong for a swimmer to compete for three years on the men's swim team switch to the women's team and then win the Women's National Championship that's a fraud that's wrong too It's wrong for the doctors pump minors with puberty blockers or perform sex change operations on them, and in Florida now doctors who do those things to these minors will lose their medical license.
Truth matters, our country is reeling because many of our institutions have become decoupled from the truth and have been lost in a sea of relativism. Our nation's founders understood that self-government does not operate on autopilot. They knew that freedom was fragile and required that we, as citizens, be good caretakers of our heritage of freedom. When the founding fathers met in Philadelphia in 1787 to design what became the United States Constitution, they came armed with having studied the history of every republic that had ever existed in human history because they wanted to draw lessons about what what had happened in the past and how they could apply those lessons to launch the American experiment and there was really only one thing that all of those previous republics had in common and that was that each of them had failed and failed miserably, so they understood that It really fell to the United States of America to determine once and for all whether people can truly govern themselves.
Could there be a society based on the idea that our rights have been given to us by God and that we should be governed by a rule of law and not by the whim of men or individual people? Is humanity forever destined to live under various forms of tyranny? And they correctly understood that it would be the American experiment that would ultimately answer that question, but they also knew that it was not as simple as just having a great Declaration of Independence and designing a great Constitution when Benjamin Franklin walked out of the federal convention in 1787.
He was stopped on the street by a woman who said to him, Dr. Franklin, what has a republic or a monarchy given us? and Franklin said a republic, ma'am, but only if you can. Keep it, they understood that the survival of the American experiment would require dedication to true American principles. We need to see a revival of those principles in our country today. We must embrace our founding Creed that our rights are not courtesy of the government they are. the gift of almighty God we must reject the idea that constitutional self-government can be outsourced to technocratic elites who reduce individuals to mere data points we must insist on the restoration of time-tested constitutional principles so that a government of and for the people will not perish on this Earth Florida has shown that it can be done, we offer a glimmer of hope that there will still be better days ahead.
I am proud of the accomplishments we have made in the state of Florida. It is my honor to be here and I look forward to the battles ahead. I will fight the good fight. I will finish the race and keep the faith. Thank you all. God bless you all. Thank you so much. Thank you so much. Governor. We thank you for being here today. Here at Liberty University we must work hard to ensure that we, as Benjamin Franklin said all those years ago, protect and defend this nation as one nation under God indivisible with liberty and justice for all.
