Here's Why The 2020 Chevy Corvette Should REALLY Scare Ferrari, Porsche, & McLaren!

Feb 22, 2020
Hey guys, my name is Tommy with the Fastlane car and today we're looking at all the

really

cool stuff underneath inside and out of the new

2020

Corvette c8. This won't be one of the things you want to miss. The big news for

2020

, of course, is that The Corvette C8 is mid-engined, which means that at the front you have a front or front trunk. Now the great thing about the front end of the Corvette C8 isn't actually the size, which is quite generous. Chevrolet says it fits your standard carry-on luggage. but actually the shape of the cut line

here

looks like something taken from the B-2 stealth bomber.
here s why the 2020 chevy corvette should really scare ferrari porsche mclaren
It's a

really

angular kind of special design. Now to open the front trunk you actually press a button on the door that has a little picture of a Corvette on it and the front opens up to get into the new Corvette, t

here

is no handle on the door, it's actually hidden under this big C that acts as another air vent for the engine, so you put your hand on this pad, grab the switch and the whole door opens. and then on the inside there is a button you press to unlock it and a mechanical unlock in case the battery dies so different cars and different shirts because we only have a limited amount of time with each car every day we have a z51 . performance package and I've got this really cool new TfL T-shirt shameless promotion, but take a look at the front of the Corvette.
here s why the 2020 chevy corvette should really scare ferrari porsche mclaren

More Interesting Facts About,

here s why the 2020 chevy corvette should really scare ferrari porsche mclaren...

Now we talked about how you can open the front from the button on the inside, but there's actually another way if you get down here and actually on the cooling inlet on the left side there's a little button and you press the button and the trunk opens. also and like all new cars sold here in the US if you need to escape out the front of the car if you are stuck in the front there is actually a little man jumping out of the front of a mid engine Corvette , press that button and it will open the front trunk and look at that even 12 volts of power for everything you need, so here you have a key for the 2020 Corvette.
here s why the 2020 chevy corvette should really scare ferrari porsche mclaren
You have the trunk unlocked, remote start and look at this, a key to the old school and it's very important to know this because if your battery dies in 2020. Corvette, you can't use a button to get in because there will be no power, so what you have to do is channel your inner yogi, what I mean is that you really have to lie down and then the keyhole is way up here in the scoop, you actually put the key in, you turn it and the door opens. Now, my dad, it's actually a really cool opportunity to sit down with the chief engineer of the Corvette c8 and talk about some of the features on it and even do an impromptu 0-60. 0 to 60 to see how this car works take a look let me ask you your name first just for the record so I have the right yes my name is EDI attack and you are the chief engineer.
here s why the 2020 chevy corvette should really scare ferrari porsche mclaren
I am the chief engineer of the generation. Obviously the biggest change is that now the engine is right behind us, the small-block V8, and how that changes the way you approach the car, it hasn't changed the way you design the car, it's fundamentally different. , it's how to start. from a blank sheet of paper and that's what we did, we have evaluated some of the best cars in the segments, we bought some cars, we wrecked some cars, we made sure that from the first time we delivered a car that was very good, convincing and it will take a couple of generations to learn the tricks a minute yes, we bought and dismantled 48, we have 911, we had a McLaren mp4-12c, the benchmarks in the segment and we really want to compete with them on equal terms. and if you don't know what they do, you know it's going to be harder to beat them at their own game, so that was really the goal of the server, so we picked these cars, you compared them, and then how would you improve this?
I think it comes from leveraging the things that Corvette has always done so that we can deliver a car that has all the performance but a value proposition that they can't match because of leveraging the scale of General Motors, for example, a silly example. would be an airbag module, everyone would have to buy an airbag module, we would buy millions of them, so our cost for each module will be a little lower than a custom-made boutique manufacturer, so for each part that a customer does not see or touch we take advantage of General The economy of engines is a scale and that gives us that between the car that is on par, they understand the point and one that comes from a fraction of its price, accelerates the start 14700 for us here, yeah, it's actually not the best time in the world, I think I think.
Touring girls, yes, and I can show you how to set up a launch control mode. It's probably no better on public roads either. Tomorrow at the track you will see that there is a little handshake that they do with the traction control buttons when starting the launch. you control, you step on the gas on the brake, yeah, and you just let off the brake, it'll blow up the car and keep it lined up in there in here, and we're big guys, I still think even with the two of us in there. the car on the reading surface is probably a three one three two yeah um that's a good point okay guys join me with Jason who is our pro driver in the new Corvette and Jason, How do we start checking this guy, so I'll do it? put it in track sport mode as well as PTM mode, hit the brake, so let's talk about the rear of the Corvette, which is the business end.
Now to open the hatch, the same thing there is a small button with the back of the core open and you. You'll see the top of the Corvette here because of course the Corvette Coupe has a removable center panel and you're probably wondering how it comes off. It's just three levers, you have one here, you have one here and lastly one on the roof, although it is a huge piece, it comes out very easily and is very light. Let's show you how to hold it. You take the curved edge and it's a little tricky. In fact, with the spoiler, we're going to put it into position.
There is little. feet on the bottom, you line up those little feet so it's nice and secure and then you tip it forward, you're probably thinking, "We'll hit the road," but of course this is a Corvette, you don't want this thing to wobble . just push it down and lock it in place now this top doesn't go anywhere to close the back cover you close it and you don't actually have to slam it shut just push it a little and it sinks into soft clothing it's really convenient. One of the cool new features here on the CA Corvette is a performance data recorder and the c7 had this as well as a camera that will record what happens on a track like that, but now it will also run continuously when you're on the road and you record to an SD like Tesla so you have a constant - in case something happens, now you can have it just show what the car is doing and you can also overlay some performance data, it's really nice. interesting stuff and now the camera, unlike the previous one, is not a potato, you know, like I say, I'm really impressed.
One of the things you said in the briefing was that everything you touch does look like a luminol, that is, aluminum does. it's leather, it's leather and you're right, the two years here are certainly real class, right, there's nothing here that the C feels like there's any cost to cooking, it's something that you had to push more absolutely and you know, it I give credit to our design team. They're the ones that I really wanted to take the next step and I think Corvette has this kind of legacy of saving on the interior to keep hitting a price point and with this car we said, let's do the interior right, let's make it custom and really beautiful. and in keeping with the exterior of the car and not letting people down once they open the door and I think our design team really nailed that.
One of the coolest things about the interior of the new Corvette has to be the dashboard design because there are a lot of floating elements, for example, you have this center piece that rises above the dashboard and even on the right side, here next to the passenger, you have another little gap that makes the board almost look like a work of art in itself. There is a lot of complexity and, in my opinion, it all works very well. The place to be in the new Corvette is undoubtedly the driver's seat, and not just because they're driving the new Corvette, but because, as a passenger, you're practically walled off. away from the whole world, here you have this huge central pillar, which means I can't really see the centers of the 8-inch screen and I certainly can't use it either.
I mean look how far away the volume knob is, it's a full reach just to reach it it's at such an aggressive angle towards the driver that you're kind of stuck the other problem is there's no real place to put your arm as a passenger because this big pillar extends way back here now here in the center You'll notice one of the most distinctive parts of the new Corvette and that's the HVAC controls. Basically, the climate control is in a huge row in the center, so up here you have the automatic climate for the driver's side and then you have the cooled seats. and heated seats for the driver's side automatic and timing functions, you have your airflow display, of course, fan and then it's all repeated down here for the passenger with, of course, your defrost settings.
Now if that's all a little overwhelming, it's actually also duplicated here in the center, so you have a lot of different options, but why wouldn't you use these fighter jet controls on the side? This is one of the coolest and most unique parts of the car and I love that it's here. a 495 horsepower 6.2 liter LT 2 small block v8, it's a dry sump lubricated engine with three oil recovery pumps, all that means is that they can put the engine very low in the car, too It means this car won't start on oil when you're pushing a lot of G's on the track.
I can ask you a softball question before I come back which is your favorite Burton. I mean, you spent the last seven years and this is your baby. What is your part here? The Protestant, I think. Just the engine now that five horsepower really was kind of a high end berry performance car back in the day, having that much power in a low range makes the car super fun to drive all the time yeah and it starts at one fifty nine. thousand right that's a place again and I think this one they were at is seventy five thousand yeah probably at the end of the whole part and then if you get all the amenities you can go up to 90 you can't spend so much. has been a competitor that, you know, offers similar performance, so yeah, it still maintains that great Corvette tradition of the value proposition and you know, the cool thing is that Lizzie mentions depending on what options you want, what performance you need, whether you're going to follow the car or not, whether you want to, you know the particular interior design, some of the electronic features that you can, you can get a great car for sixty thousand dollars, you can get a car that looks like a thrift store that will smell your car on a list one. one hundred thousand, let's talk about the transmission in the

corvette

c8, there is only one option and it is an 8-speed dual-clutch automatic and it is activated with a button, so you have to park right there, where we are and then back up to drive back you have a little neutral button there and then reverse to drive and you'll notice it's automatic and that's because to engage the paddle shifters you have to press em and then GM tells us you can hold this down. thing on the red line all day and it won't increase the shift for you, what have you designed into this to make it bad, like a little performance I guess, but sure, I think it's really about technology, so the first is the piece the dual one? clutch transmission no excuses a spoke transmission that fits just this car and gives you lightning fast shifts that's incredible performance where you have nothing to say and acceleration as you go through the gears we have magnetic ride control 4.0 that uses accelerometers in the knuckles, so we can anticipate the body's motion before it moves and we can take control and prevent the tires from connecting to the pavement.
We have a brake system right now that is effectively a brake-by-wire system and we can set the play for the brakes to be comfortable on the roads in a tour mode or give it a more aggressive mode in a sport mode or even extend the ability of the high g deceleration module on the track, so it's a matter of choosing the technologies that really elevate the performance of the car, something that the Corvette team is very proud of here, the new C8, is actually the storage capacity and take a look at this, they say it actually fits two golf clubs in the back, no problem, two sets of golf clubs and in fact, Just take a look at the front trunk of this particular model because this one also has the optional luggage installed in 50 years, which will be incredibly valuable.
The danger controls here for the Corvette actuallyThey're up here on the center console. The front is your pretty standard amber flash that extends to the front of the light, but the turn signals on the rear are now sequential and I think they look absolutely brilliant. There are a couple different versions of the 2020 Corvette, two main ones actually. a standard car and this, the z51, this is your track handling package, you have the spoiler on the back and summer tires sticky with LSD and this really cool color, it's called fast blue, it's a 500 dollar option, but it's easily my favorite.
On any new Corvette, we've spent forever looking for the parking brake here on the Corvette and it's really hidden, it's actually way down near the left knee, it's a button and actually, let's talk about brakes in general because we had the opportunity. sit down with Brembo, who designed the brakes on this new car. My name is Benjamin Pol. I worked for Brembo North America and am a program manager for General Motors. This is the third generation of brakes we have made for the Chevrolet Corvette that we present. program on the original c6 zr1 with a carbon ceramic application and we made all the brake systems for the previous generation c7 so we are very excited to be a part of this new c8 line but obviously this car is a little different to both. previous cars, so three of the four gauges in this car are brand new and designed in white.
The other thing that is unique to this car for the first time in Chevrolet Corvette is the electronic parking brake, so the previous generation has what is called a Drummond parking hat. brake with a manual lever we have now moved it to an electronic system where the customer can simply lift a button and activate the brake and this is on the base car and the z51 so they ask me: do you know Brembo, an Italian company , Yeah? How different are these brakes from the brakes and Brembo provides a Ferrari? They are not different. I mean, every brake we make is for a specific application, so they're all going to be different in the piston size, the pad size, the material in the way it's integrated into the chassis architecture. but the technology that is fundamental to Brembo, the aluminum brake calipers, the monobloc technology, is the same thing that Ferrari has and we are bringing that same technology to Chevrolet and all of our premium customers, this new Corvette comes with wireless charging and I was looking all over. not here in the center there it's not in the console it's in - no, it's nowhere to be found it's actually very hidden it's behind both the driver and the passenger in this little cubby that you put your phone in like this and it will start charging your device now, this is a very secure location actually on these little studs that actually hold the phone and well, but it means that you will never be able to navigate with your phone charging because it's behind you, well, that's not very fair, I mean .
Of course, you can navigate if you have Apple CarPlay, but if it's on the wireless charger, it's out of sight, out of mind. The new C8's engine seems completely sealed off from the world. Of course, here you have the rear glass. like nothing is going to get through this barrier, but you'd be wrong because along the side you have these functional vents, there's even a space back here at the end for a little more ventilation, but you'll notice there's still a rear defroster here. In fact, you'll notice a series of cameras on the exterior of the new Corvette c8.
You actually have two in the front that allow you to see what you're going to hit, or if you're close to hitting that curb, you get a top. -down view, you have one in the back that can be zoomed in, you have a wide view and then a narrow view and then you have one back here too and this is for the rear view mirror so you don't have to look through the glass rear if you want to look through the roof. Amir said that while the rear visibility isn't that terrible, the Corvette here has eight, well, it's a square steering wheel and Chevrolet says the bottom is square.
Extra room around the knees and at the top it is squared so you have the greatest view towards the front of the car and downward visibility. I'm not sure you really have much more downward visibility if you're somewhat tall like me and Be honest, if you're driving at 10 and 2, it's just uncomfortable. I struggle to find a grip on the steering wheel that's really that comfortable, however, the paddle shifters are brilliant, they're cold to the touch for everything that feels aluminum here. It is made of aluminum and they respond instantly letting the 8-speed transmission shift immediately. Well, the first thing I noticed upon getting into the car right away, of course, is the fact that you now have a square steering wheel, what does that do?
The key really is that you know there's a lot of inspiration that comes from the motorsports zipper and the reason we did it on this car is we squared off the bottom so you have more legroom on entry and exit and We squared off the top so you can have that view over the steering wheel down. the road and also gives you a really wide aperture for your 12-inch reconfigurable cluster so you can see all the data, all the information. I like the fact that this is actually the same color as the interior on the right, normally these are a little red on the right. this is this little marker that tells you exactly which direction the steering wheel is facing, yes, and it's a company that has some link to motorsports and yes, the design guys thought it would be a classy sporty touch, this is something really special, it probably looks like You like a Holden ute, but it's actually a development mule for the new Corvette and we had the opportunity to sit down with the development engineer, the chief development engineer, about this new car.
Okay Mike, so we're here to talk about a Holden that's really not Holden, you're the development engineer for the new Corvette c8, this particular vehicle is one of Y, so we codenamed this one. vehicle, blackjack, because within the company, when we started working on this, we wanted to keep the fact. that we are working on something that was a mid-engine product, obviously secret on the outside but even on the inside because as we get more people involved there are more opportunities or chances of leaks etc., so why did you use a Holden? So it was very convenient. clown suit, so we start to see how I camouflage the fact that there is a mid-engined vehicle that we are trying to study here.
Traditional camouflage like you see on the other vehicles in development doesn't hide anything, so we thought. It would be nice to try to hide the engine under a truck-type design so that it has a very convenient shape and we tried to emulate that shape. What's unique about this car is that I don't have any donors for the body structure, so if you look here, we have a lot of billet machined components, so on this car, the body structure components Bodywork started with 7,000 pounds of billet and we converted about 90% of that into recycled chips. Would it be fair to say that this is the most expensive Corvette in the world, it feels like it's all handcrafted.
Yes, if you had the time to do it, it's probably a fair assessment. There are a couple of different seating options here in the new Corvette. The base seat is called the single-seat GT. and it will be the most comfortable and best for larger people. The next seat is called gt2, it's a little more aggressive, it has some kind of stronger side bolstering and then there's this seat, the competition seats, and I'm fine, I have the upper body strength of a limp squirrel , even these seats for me are a little tight, let's talk about heat because that is a very difficult thing to deal with in a mid-engined car with the engine in the middle and not in the front.
Standard 2020 Corvette, you actually have two radiators and two heat exchangers, both radiators are in the front, on each side, if you get the z51, which one of this car is the performance package, you actually have a third radiator on one of the side vents, now it's quite fun. Chevrolet told us that if you live in the Middle East, you actually get a fourth radiator in the vent on the other side just to make sure your car stays cool. We had some heat problems in the last c7. I hope you put them on. I think the key is on.
This generation car was going to raise expectations around track performance from a thermal perspective and the technical requirements of our vehicle now require us to validate at higher temperatures, so we now have additional bandwidth in the cooling capacity of the car, so basically what I said was: let's make sure that when we test this car, we test it at a higher temperature than the previous one, not just good enough to be functional in a day summer day in Michigan, but we also want it to be great on a summer day in Arizona and that's what we designed in the cartoon: you can have your new Corvette in any interior color you want, as long as it's one of six, of course, but they now also offer colored seat belts, and there are many different colors of seat belts that cost more than three.
A hundred dollars to change the color, but you can really configure it however you want, it's exactly like what Porsche has been doing for a long time with different colored stitching and seat belts and embroidery on the headrests. There are simply too many options in this new Corvette. There are several drive modes here inside the new Corvette and you control them through this little knob hidden under this little Corvette shield. It looks very premium and feels very premium so you have the weather, which of course is for bad weather, rain, snow, my way. which is fully configurable for your exhaust, you know the throttle response in the steering, all that, then you have the ride, which will be your standard mode, so you know, driving down the road every day, that's the one you'll use, sport marks it. a little bit and then the track is tough, let's see how fast we can go around Nurburgring mode, but there's actually two additional modes that you have here that set up the car a little bit differently, it's almost like an M button here on the steering wheel and then a stealth mode that Chevrolet tells us at night dims everything so it's just a driver and what's in front of you and the gauge cluster is cool too and then here you have the Z button which is in the way we set the Z mode comes from the factory and will come with a mix of sport and track settings for things like steering, brakes, dampers, progression exhaust sound and shift maps.
We've chosen the ones we thought would give you a chance to jump. in the car, press a button and you really have a good-looking car, but if not, if the factory presets aren't exactly what you like, you can go to the center screen here and customize the modes and change things around. according to GM, the C a Corvette will do it. Get 0 to 60 in under 3 seconds if you get the performance exhaust which is crazy but the part about this car is like all previous Corvettes when you don't drive it hard when you drive it every day.
Like 99.9% of people, it will be super comfortable. There is magnetic ride available on this car, but even with just a standard suspension, its cruise is quiet, it's refined, it doesn't shake, it doesn't vibrate, it doesn't pull on the belt. and it has a lot of torque at low revs and then of course we need a pass, you just increase it a little bit and that's it, it's effortless power, it's easy to use and it's very accessible because it's mid-engined, it has a lot of weight on the top rear, so it's not about moving the rear everywhere, the air vents are somewhat unusual on this car, rather than just raising and lowering sliders to the left and right of the air vents, in You actually have these little toggles so you can perfectly position where the air flows, but you're probably wondering how do I turn off the vent so air doesn't get in my face.
Simply slide the small lever all the way to the left. and that turns it off, so you'll notice that here in the Corvette we have two screens pointing directly at the driver. You've got one here in the cluster that's 12-inch and it's fully configurable with performance, audio and trip information and then you've got the 8-inch screen here in the center. This is your pretty standard eight-inch screen from GM or Chevrolet with Apple Carplay and navigation on this model, but it works quite well, now it looks a little small compared to some of the new luxury models. models that are coming out which are some of the first that have never agreed.
I think you said cross traffic alert, that's the sight lines on the return cross traffic alert, which really helps in a mid-engined car from the rear visibility that we have. I have a mirror with a digital cameraelectronics. I love it, it gives you a much wider view right away and is adjustable in both intensity, height and zoom. The front lip system that is available is not on this particular car, but it will raise the front of the car by about 40 millimeters. in 2.8 seconds for people who know steep roads or whatever, so it's really about putting the latest technology into the car and giving customers all the performance with the technology they know, the infotainment system advanced really allows people to connect and use their mobile devices seamlessly with the car, the engine in the new Corvette c8 is surprisingly affordable.
I mean, yes, it will probably be quite difficult to get to the front and rear, but unlike many other mid-engined cars, you can at least look at the engine and at least you can do some tweaks yourself, for example, they give you a Traditional dipstick that Sony no longer has from the Germans. I really appreciate you taking the time to take a walk with me and guys, if you like. a Corvette that you're not going to own and wait because I think you're already building them in Bowling Green, that's right, and they

should

be hitting dealerships in the next few weeks, so if you've ordered them and you have a lot of pre-orders, yeah , the interest in the cars has been overwhelming, that's exciting, then they're out there and we'll see.
I have to tell you that we stopped here in the parking lot and all the people that came this way. Looking at this car was amazing. I think when you understand it you

should

feel like you've hit a home run. It's fun, it's fun to talk to all the people who didn't do it or who aren't even sure what happens when you shoot. and you explain to them that it is possible to get home and people get very excited, so there you have it for the first time.A detailed look at the new 2020 Corvette, let us know in the comments section below what you think of the new c8.
