LARP Bag of the Healer

Apr 07, 2024
Greetings adventurers and welcome to the skill tree where we learn how to do almost everything. A few weeks ago, you may remember I made this Crafters kit here and since then I've gotten a ton of requests to make a Healer kit. to follow the same theme, basically something cool for a LARP or a reenactment or just for fun, honestly, that you can use, you have all the things you need to heal yourself or do whatever you need to do, so you basically play as a support. character, have mercy now when deciding to do that. Maddie came up with an awesome design, so that's today's episode, let's see what we can do by making it happen and leveling up this skill now to boot.
larp bag of the healer
She wanted to make this tough, but maybe. a little more accessible in the past. I've made everything like this with leather or wood, so today we're going to try something new and make it with a canvas cloth I bought at Joanne Fabrics. three yards of this, it's a nice color and super sturdy feel to the body of my bag. I just measured 13 inches of fabric with the idea that my bag would be about a foot wide and would give me a half inch seam allowance on each side and because the fabric is still folded when I cut it, the entire piece ends up Being about five feet long, the idea here is to fold this piece of fabric a couple of times to achieve multiple pockets and generally add more layers to the fabric.

larp bag of the healer...

To make everything sturdier after trying a couple of settings I finally decided to fold the fabric in half and then another fold about a quarter of the way down so that that extra inside fold would be a pocket and then kind of the top area where come together will be a larger internal pocket. It will make more sense as you build, I promise, but then of course everything will fold up to become a single bag that you can wear on your shoulder. We base it loosely. From these real life medical kits that open lengthwise so you can access everything at once, now to discover all the little pockets and things inside, I end up just cutting out the shapes I thought they were.

I should be out of paper just to see how everything lined up. Happily, I first marked the width of the widest pockets and cut a strip of that measurement from the fabric. I also cut a three inch wide strip that I turned into these. small rounded bottom gussets. I left them about a quarter inch larger than I wanted the actual pocket to use as a guide. I marked how much fabric was needed to wrap all that reinforcement and still leave me with enough material. to wrap over the top to form a closure before I could sew them on, although I folded that extra quarter inch at the top first so I could give it a more finished edge.

I did the same thing with the end of the pocket material that Well, after a quick run around my sewing machine to secure those rolls in place, it was time to hook everything up to make this. I simply lined up the corners so that both finished edges were facing each other and the unfinished edges were on the outside. then I had to go back to the sewing machine to connect the two together. Now, this is the first time I've had to do it like this with such difficulty. I figured it out as long as I made sure the needle went through the fabric.
When I tried to reposition the top layer to follow the rounded bottom, nothing moved too much and it was quite easy to get the shape I was looking for and it actually turned out very well when I turned it around or on the right side of the scene. It looks pretty clean and I'm honestly excited about how much easier this was than I thought it was going to be now to make sure the edges of the flap that actually closed looked finished as well. I just cut little slits right where those flaps meet the sides, doing this allows me to fold those edges over so I can block them too and see this cool little pocket.
I'm excited about how great it turned out and honestly how easy it was to make. I find all of these sewing projects a little intimidating because I don't have a lot of sewing experience, but the more I dive into these things and try them, the more I realize they're not as daunting as I thought. were going to be now to make this look even better. I folded the gussets on the side and bottom and ironed them in place to really press those seams, this makes everything look much more square. It's impressive how much ironing really seems to define you. the shape of a thing makes it look much cleaner after repeating the whole process seven more times, my full complement of pockets is complete.
I love pockets and I'm imagining this one specifically as a lot of places like I don't. I don't know about bandages and herbs and tinctures or anything like tiny little potions that you can use to heal people, things like that, but to be honest, if I were to make my own potions to heal, uh, I'd probably poison myself, let's be clear. , probably I was poisoned fortunately thanks to today's sponsor's skill sharing. I can avoid poisoning myself while putting my Snape in class. Make your own herbal tinctures, tonics and teas. Our potions master and herbalist extraordinaire Charlene Rossiter also goes over the benefits of using natural herbs.
The words raise your health to a new level, but she thinks of it as if she said it like Snape, like she raises your health when she said with that voice, it sounds like she can extend my natural lifespan. Bob, how to identify a wide range. of different herbs, seeds, spices and bark. I know what they do for your health, how to use them to make various herbal teas, tonics and tinctures. Honestly, it makes me feel like a Potions Master. Now I would like help with an upset stomach, ease breathing problems or even put a stop to death okay that last one is still a work in progress I think I have it I mean let's be honest for when I know it's not working I won't be around to worry about that, so if you want to learn something new and fun too, you're in luck because the first 1,000 people to click the link in the description below will get a month's free trial of Skillshare Skillshare is a community of online learning with thousands of online classes and members in 150 countries. just that, but their site is really easy to use which makes learning a breeze, just click the link in the description below and start your learning adventures today.
Okay, now that I have all those nifty little pockets, it's time to figure out how to attach the Damn things to the back, the thought Maddie and I had was that it would be really cool if those pockets were detachable, so you can kind of of healing force multiplier, you can remove one that has like potions and throw it away. from someone you can take one that has like the spell cards we use in our LARP that says repair them and throw them at the spellcasters, basically now we have a bunch of people that can help you heal, that's healing smarter, not more difficult, so that the The idea that occurred to me was to install some kind of strap that the pocket can be hooked on and hung there.
To make this, I simply cut a piece of fabric three inches wide and then folded the two edges toward the center by pressing them together. Using my iron I then folded everything once more, pressing it as well and then went to the sewing machine to add a couple of lines of stitching through everything, this allowed me to have a really strong canvas strap that was honestly super easy to make and exactly what I needed it's really good. I'm very, very happy with this using my rows of pockets as measuring devices. I cut a strap to the correct length and then marked the body of the bag where those straps would land.
In relation to the pockets to be able to fix them in place, the idea here is to cut small strips of leather so you can sew on the back of the pockets and then slide them behind these straps to keep the pockets in place but still leave them. be removable when needed so I went ahead and cut those leather strips in various sizes to match each of the pockets and then dyed them all dark brown once the diet dried it was very easy to take them to my leather sewing machine and secure them in place with a double stitch line for added strength along the back of the pockets.
I am not going to lie. I wasn't sure this would actually work, but once I attached it to the bag I had a much better feeling about it. on my back pocket I went ahead and attached those straps by adding a few stitches on the ends as I slid my pockets into place, I noticed the straps were a little loose and everything was hanging a little more than I wanted. So I measured how wide those little strips of leather would be on the little guard strips and then I went back over the sewing machine and added stitches on my marks and this really made all the difference in the world, not just keeping those straps from sagging. but also keeping each of those pockets much tighter, so now that I've figured out that whole pocket debacle that honestly took me longer than you see there, it took me an embarrassingly long amount of time to commit to that, but now that I have that thing I figured out it's time to turn this into a bag to do that.
First I started by folding everything in half and inside out pinning all the edges, then I went to the sewing machine and closed the two side edges now once I turn the right side I basically have this long jacket and again, everything looks much better once you press those edges together as you press them. I also folded the edge of the opening so I could set that in place and make sure it was nice and clean eventually. I want to fold that bottom quarter over to make another pocket, but there are still a lot of things like sewing where I have to get into that space, so I'm going to do it. is open for now as Maddie's image in basically every video game.
Med kit never shown. We wanted this to have a little circle with a little red cross to say like they know Med kit, which by the way, they do. where that comes from, why that is, leave it in the comments section. Now I'm curious to put that sucker in its place. I just took out some leather and used the edge of my cup here to draw a circle that I cut and prepared. which, in addition to this little cross that goes right in the center of that cross, I ended up dying a nice deep oxblood red for the circle.
I used a white Eco flow paint. That is designed for leather. Now I want this bag to look like it's a battle. I used it all, so I wasn't too careful with my brush strokes, I just put them in a little sloppily, almost as if it would need to be mended or refreshed a couple of times during its life, then I went back to my leather sewing machine to close that circle. in place and then pin the cross into place on top of that and I can say I love how this turned out. I like having the kind of rough stitches on the top and the overall colors are just wow, it's beautiful to me.
Well, wasn't it this time that I realized that all those little pockets I made have no way of keeping them closed, like there's no way they can hang on to the little strips in there, but then they'll fly open. everywhere, so I decided to put a button on them and then use a cord wrapped around the bottom to place on that button to keep everything in place and full disclosure. I recently learned how to put a button like myself. I used to go through all the little holes in the fabric and then tie it and that's it, but I learned that actually yes, you make a few passes through all the little holes making sure it's nice and strong first, but then you go through the needle behind the button and wrap the thread underneath it six times, this actually ends up leaving you with a small shank behind that button to give you enough room to use the damn thing, then you just run the needle through the fabric a couple of times to lock the windings in place and tie them together, it's a super simple skill that honestly eluded me for the vast majority of my life, so there you have it, how to make a button and luckily thanks to this project I was able to practice this particular skill eight times. followed now I am the master of the buttons, they love me and fear me to complete this little assembly here.
I made a hole in the bottom of those little leather flaps and then ran some hemp thread folded in half through that hole which I pulled enough out so I could reach the bottom and go over that button, then I tied a knot in the back so I couldn't slide through that hole. This nifty little design actually serves a few purposes, the first obviously to keep the bag closed, but when combined with the strap we put this through, it actually makes those pockets not fall out even when the bag is flipped over. I also found that by pulling the excess cord from the back, it will tighten that pocketmaking sure the contents stay firm inside, cool, so going back to the drawing Maddie did here, it originally had some handles on the top to keep it closed.
I think I'm going to go a different route with that just because the bag has been looser since then. We're not going to make it out of leather or anything, but I still like the ideas of having those handles so I can use it like a little briefcase, but I can also hang it on things if I need to and making it was really easy, I just used a little bit of the material leftover strap I made and sewed the ends in place on the back, first at the opening and then again right where the bag folds to meet that opening and this worked great not only giving me a place to hold the bag but also a place to hang the bag, so again I can put it like on a tree or something while I'm working with a patient I just have it open, hanging and grabbing all the things I need that being said, I still wanted a crossbody strap so I can wear it and run while I'm out in the field and having my hands open to do this, I ended up just cutting some leather straps that I folded over to lock this little D ring here, then I added a belt buckle to the side, this allows me to close the back and It gives me a place to put a strap.
I simply secured this to the bag by stitching the entire back to support most of the weight and adding a couple of stitches to the front just to keep it in place. Also at this point I decided to block that. Finally I fold the fabric to make the bottom pocket area permanent. This now gives me this chunky little pocket that I can store all the stuff in. It feels very solid and there is plenty of room for what I need, then I just fold it up and fasten those. straps to keep the bag closed and have a place to connect show shoulder straps too and come on, you can't tell me that doesn't look stylish.
I really like the way the leather and the canvas look together and that was another part that I was not sure how to do it, it was a little difficult because the canvas that wants to fold on itself as soon as it has weight becomes all unstable, but put those leather straps that wrap around it completely and hold it. The framework worked a bit perfectly. I am very happy with him. Okay, the last thing I need to do is the shoulder strap, but we've already made straps in this project, so I'm going to do pretty much the same thing.
You know, to start, I cut a six inch wide strip from the canvas and then just before folding it back on itself, first making sure the edges are clean before ironing it completely in half to give me the final width of the strap . It's a simple matter of just running it through my sewing machine to keep everything in place and this is the best one I've done so far, my stitch lines feel more or less straight, at least more so than usual and honestly, The whole thing feels very strong. I'm so proud that it's as simple as Little Steps.
I'm proud he came out to plug it. I just threaded it through those D rings and then added a square of stitching to make sure it was nice and strong. Look how cool. this damn thing is god, I love the way it looks, it sits great on my shoulder, I like where it falls on my hip, the connection point with the strap came out really well and overall I'm really excited about this as a little more. Also, I took the strap and sewed it into little loops to have this place to add bandages to it in case you need a bandage quickly, okay the last thing I wanted to do with this bag is really give it that vibe like it went through the war like if it had been lived during the last year.
I didn't want to have the plastic and the new look. I want to have that vibe like I'm watching the battle, so I just grabbed some 80 grit sandpaper and type. I went to town on this paying special attention to all the spots that would get used the most, like the openings at the top or where it folds down at the back, where it would rub against me as I ran. I made sure to screw. I raised the leather a little as it sticks out more and would rub against things I passed by. I even roughed up all the pockets on the inside because they would definitely rub against each other as the years of use took their toll, I finally moved on. with a rag that had some old leather dye on it and I lightly applied it everywhere to give it that dirtier, stained look and look how amazing this thing is, it has plenty of room to hold all my special herbs and potion bottles with ones where I can get someone up and fighting quickly, it also has room for my healing cards so nearby spellcasters can help our troops up and because of the design I can detach the little pocket and throw it at someone while I'm finally running to help someone else because in a LARP there are still real people running in a real field who can really get hurt.
I decided to add some real first aid equipment, like band aids and whatnot, wrapped it tightly. a piece of linen and stick it in that inside pocket, then close my convenient little medical bag keeping everything safe. I'm delighted with the outcome of this thing. Honestly, the functionality turned out much better than I thought. The main pocket gives me easy access to store larger materials, what I need, more supplies, everything folds down and gives me easy access to all my small pockets and my main internal pocket, where my IRL stuff is, and then everything Conveniently folds back. up and ready to go, it works great, but also the overall look of this thing, like roughing it out and making it look lived in, it really added that little extra, that's something, it's so cool it looks like a movie prop.
I love this. Everything is fine, so now I want to change gears very quickly. I am very excited to move forward and announce our winners for level one of our level up balloon competition. If you're not sure what I'm talking about, watch this video here. for more details since level two will start soon, now it is not us who choose the winners, the responsibility belonged entirely to Berg Snyder. Luckily because you guys brought this home, let me tell you what the costumes were and the projects that you put together. Oh man, you're so talented anyway. I'm going to let Burg Snyder tell us who the winners are.
We have the small circle. Are we recording? I think we're recording. We are recording. Wow, this is the end like the finish line. from this level you have this level and there are many to come yes, wow, everyone from Burke Schneider here in Frankfurt, Germany, very excited about level one and the completion of the skill trees, leveling up the LARP challenge. I was very excited to see how things went. going on Discord and I know you've also been actively on the channel, yeah, I tried it a few days ago and I checked out the submissions and I have to say I had a great time, it was a lot of fun, it was amazing.
Yeah, it's really fun, so we're excited to announce the first second and third place winners, as well as the wildcard winner for leveling up, LARP level one for the skill tree, so without further ado, I think we should jump in to our third place. Choice, do you have the choice? Glory post-it note, no, this is the most important part now, yes, no, but for third place and we must say we both loved it. We have Mac with our third place winner Meg who did an amazing job, I love the way so many things happen with the costume alteration and the sense of functionality adjustments which I really enjoy and I think the adjustment of adding pockets This was really cool, it brought a whole new layer to the course.
Absolutely, like you said, it illuminated it, yeah, which I really enjoyed and which also illuminated it. All the embroidery, like all the embroidery on the back, the flowers, absolutely amazing for me as a tailor in progress, the embroidery was an amazing job, yes, I think something works very well. stuff so congratulations third place Meg awesome loved second place okay second place we have Keegan Keegan Keegan did an amazing job yeah there's a lot going on. The first thing he brought me were these red dots that he used and the laces. on the front, yeah, and the bride brass that you put there really made it pop, really adds, so we always talk about fake capes and the importance of fake capes and building costumes that work and look like they have a lot of the depth and the faux layers that were added to this were fantastic, the fit of adding additional trim elements and the collar.
I really enjoyed this. I think you did a great job, yes, amazing job fits the character, yes, as does our third place winner, Meg. So, which brings us to the first place, yeah, this was big, it's really complicated. The first thing I said was that this must have taken hours, yes, hours and hours. I was a little shocked because I wouldn't have done it like I did in small quantities. of this particular skill but I've never leveled up that skill uh it's not in my skill tree let's put it that way yeah the one who did it was Yana Yana first place Yana absolutely deserves this first place.
I am very impressed by the quantity. of the embroidery that was done by hand, incredible, yes, the amount of thought you have to put into this when designing dwarves and embroidery, knitting, embroidery, there is a whole different level of imagination that you have to put into it, so the idea of it being a dwarf seeker, yes, I love it. Plus, he's this Ranger Prospect type of character. I love the backstory concept and I really felt like it fit really well, so I thought this was for sure the one we wanted to take first, so congratulations, you absolutely deserve an amazing job, there is one.
The last one, although yes, which is our wild card. I mean, she was the one the wild card fit best. It's like this is the category that this was absolutely imagined in and for the wild card we have Rachel, yes, Raquel Rachel. I'm not sure how to pronounce it, sorry if we made a mistake. I loved this because although there wasn't a ton of modifications done in regards to adding a lot of functionality to it, other than the fact that she did modify the sleeves and sides. now you can remove many small pieces of embroidery throughout the entire costume and then there was the story and for us the joker was the winner for the story in this case, this simple element of the costume impacted us a lot, I mean the idea of being a

healer

and remembering those you couldn't save and that's why you put your heart on the field, yes, writing them on your sleeve and always having them with you, this was something that really impacted her.
Yeah, yeah, absolutely and I think this is it for me, at least this one was the one that has parts where I wanted to give it first and then there are things like yeah, but there are these other ones and it's the perfect wild card, yeah. because although there are many things that had the same degree of work, it was the story element of this one that really drove me and it's the story, you know, a little bit embroidered. I tell you, I love that you take them with you. with nowhere you walk yeah I love it so from here at the Burke Schneider team it's really great to be able to be a part of this and enjoy this creative process with all of you and continue this costume journey on level two We can't wait to see what you guys do.
It will be amazing. We can not wait. This was just the beginning. This was the Little Stone that hopefully set everything in motion and will be the impetus provided for basically all of this. it just grows and grows yes we are very excited to see it grow we go back to our last country absolutely every time you sit down and work on a costume to improve those skills so from us to you thank you for participating and we look forward to seeing what what you bring in level two. Keep creating. Keep creating. Thank you so much.
