dining

room, the thing about this space is that it has always felt so disconnected from the living room that we had this big chest that divided the spaces, but it took up a lot of space that we didn't even have. a dining table in this space, it really was just a floating room, no one really knew what was going on with it and again, it never felt complete if you haven't seen the first two episodes, I highly recommend it. go check them out, they will be linked below and above here and be sure to hit the subscribe button because next week I will reveal to you my parents' new home, they will be flying here from England and you will be able to see their reactions. all the spaces that we ended up renovating in this house there was a time when there was a beautiful harvest table up here.

More Interesting Facts About,

eclectic scandi style dining room makeover making over my childhood home part 3...

I don't even think I have any pictures of it, but believe me what I say, we had a beautiful harvest table up here. but again, the space always felt very separate from the living room. I think taking that cabinet and putting it in the kitchen has really helped me, but I definitely want to create a space that feels more intentional, so this is what I'm thinking about, so my parents. I love a combination of Scandinavian design, boho design and

eclectic

design, which are really

style

s that I love too. My parents aren't afraid of color, but they like pops of color, so I want to bring back that beautiful vintage table my parents bought many years ago. ago and I want to add some new dining room chairs, these are from the article and I love how they have a different wood tone to add that fun pop of color that my parents really love.

I want to make custom seat cushions for each dining room chair and I want them to be different colors, like mustards, blues, greens, pinks. I think they are the perfect way to add color that my parents love. I'm going to hire Graham to build a gate for this entrance. This opening going down is the basement and I really think it will be good to close it. I hesitate to call this a barn door, but we'll mount it on a barn door track because that's really the only option we have. work, but I'm imagining a muted pink door, maybe it's like a cute scalloped trim, a little handle so it can open and close easily, but I think this will be a great way to separate the upstairs from the basement.

There are a couple of things. I'm going to have to solve a problem within this

makeover

, like the day we have to do it. I definitely need something to put on that wall where the cabinet used to be. I'm thinking maybe a little bar cart or something. I don't know anything functional, but I haven't planned anything or bought anything. I'm going to be kind of flying by the seat of my pants. I also really want to grab a statement ceiling light and want to save on it. I'm still looking, but I'm thinking something like this: When my dad came to Toronto to do the Renault, he pre-installed the barn door track for me and then I had Davis Painting come out and paint the whole house white.
Benjamin Moore cloud white and just white on the edge and I've said it in every video so far. It made a huge difference in this space and the Jay Davis team was a pleasure to work with and did an incredibly professional job. so if you are looking for painters in Toronto, all their links will be below. I cannot recommend them or their service enough. Hey guys, there's another video happening in this series that we're doing in the dining room today, the room is behind me, this is what it looks like. Well yeah, we're going to start in the dining room starting with a custom barn door situation, okay this goes down, a door to the basement basically, but you've never had a door just because it's a bit of an awkward setup, so which in the most perfect world, we would have made a sliding door here, basically a door that slides into the wall, but that wouldn't work because this wall is slanted, so while my dad was doing Renault he installed this track.
I did not want this. To feel like a traditional barn door, I wanted to put my own fun touch on it. I looked at custom doors that are gold, more modern, less rustic and industrial, but they cost over a thousand dollars, so this one was really affordable and goes with all the other black accents and accessories I have in this house. Graham chose MDF instead of plywood for this door because there is no wood grain, it is super strong, it doesn't split or warp with seasonal changes, which is perfect for In this project you can also shape the MDF much more easily , such as cutting it, sanding it or rounding the edges to round the edges of the door.
Graham used a paint can as a guide, cut the corners with a jigsaw and shaped them with a belt sander. bottom of scallops we chose six grams of scallops divided 39 inches by six scallops and got a diameter of 6.5 inches for each using a gram measuring tape Druid a grid for the scallops

making

vertical lines and horizontal lines from the bottom of the door using a zip tie Using a pencil and thumbtack, he drew six semicircles, cut out the scallops with a jigsaw, and roughly sanded them to make them smooth. Then he used a large router bit and a router bit to round all the edges on the outside face of the door.
He used a Rasp to round off the edges on the hard to reach areas of the scallops where the router couldn't reach the handles. Graham cut two identical semicircles from scrap three-quarter lengths of MDF, rounded the edges with the router, and sanded them. until they were smooth to secure them to the door, drilled a couple of holes and used dowels to hold them in place for durability, glued them in place with some wood glue and filled the cracks with wood putty, then sanded the edges with 80 150 grit sandpaper primed and painted with three coats of pinkish brown with its own ball.
This is the door. I need about six of these in my house. I'm sorry. Grant, the way you're standing, you look like you've been through war. I'm very nervous, I won't do it. I made it too long, okay, this is good, this is dramatic, you might want to fix your shirt, oh my gosh, okay, okay, someone went through the trash, the good news is that it fits you, yeah, there, bring it. You're good down here, wait, wait, I really like it, they just say it'll close automatically because it's pretty slick, no, it's going to roll the other way, oh well, I mean, wow, my mom looks like she's going to be scared So.
The door is my mother's dream. How do you feel? I'm proud. Oh, this one turned out really cute. There is not much to say. Yes, but it has such an impact. How are we going to keep a question closed? So the problem here is that the roof. it's not level and therefore the track is not level, so what happens is the door opens because it's tilted down slightly, so we're basically trying to level it. We were thinking of using washers, but Graham thinks the shims are working. to be better and our goal is to get this side of the bracket down, okay, this looks pretty promising, pretty promising and I think we could paint some white.
I was thinking we would paint them too. No, yes, yes, okay, okay, bring it. one level, I think we just lowered this one a little bit more promising, well, moment of truth. Good job, great job everyone, so next we'll bring in the dining room table. My parents have had this for so long. I think they have saved it. It's an original harvest table. I'm not sure why they moved it downstairs, but at one point they moved it downstairs, but this room is definitely intended to be a dining room and will help the strange lack of flow become more fluid.
I love this table. It was always meant to be here and now this awkward empty space actually seems to have a purpose that we love. Graham will stay back and do some touch-ups on the barn door, he'll paint it with another coat and Elena and I will go. to the fence of the house to find some accessories for the dining room we get home. I have such a long list of things we need to finish the dining room. When this is the case, we always go into HomeSense because we know we'll probably find what we're looking for, okay, how cute are these.
I'm going to buy this. Maybe we can use it on the dining room table. Atlanta just found these adorable floral coasters. We love. This mirror is stunning. Or I think maybe not a cabinet. I won't go to the dining table side, maybe the Italy side. We put a beautiful born here. This is a possibility. I'll see what else they have, but they are awesome. Our cart is full of dining table

style

s, so now I have to sort it out. wall that is between the living room and the dining room, let's go back to the mirrors and see how tall they are.
This one can be really beautiful, so don't grow big enough to fill that whole wall now and it's like, and I totally forgot, but. My parents had this beautiful second-hand dresser upstairs. I thought it would be a great place to make like a little card that wasn't a bar but a place to put extra napkins and placemats and then we would have a nice little lamp that we could put on the top style. Everything is nice and I'm also thinking of just painting a folding sheet and a paint color that we already have. I did something similar in my book and it looks so good I'm really trying to be economical with this and I think this canvas artwork is going to be really good.
We have a lot of Port dining table style, so we will buy it. Hello everyone, welcome to the second day of the dining room. This morning we will start with a craft. I'm going to make my own artwork for this wall. I actually got this idea from an installation I did in my book. Own your space. Let's do the same for this artwork. I really wanted something that was dark and grounded, so I'm using the salamander color. I already have this frame from Ikea, so first I'm going to cut a canvas to the right size and then we're going to paint.
Graham, my assistant here smells like the force of oh , that's nice, yeah, it's like a mix of how it's made. in Poland, wood glue and wood, yes, no, that was so I didn't like it, that was really going to happen, no, I didn't listen to grandma, yes, so I cut the canvas. I'm going to remove the fabric and then gra. It will help me tape it to the back. There's also a whole gallery of peanuts watching me do this craft this morning. Elena, yes, with the basket and the dress. Look at this, there is such humor right now.
I'm going to fold the canvas around the backrest. and we're going to use double-sided carpet tape to stick it down, so I'm going to iron this to remove all the creases. I'm going to put this outside, let it dry and then I'm going to hang some curtains. We are using the same gold curtain rod and clips that we used in the living room. I woke up very excited to turn on this light. This was a last minute purchase last night at about 7 p.m. I saved this. light and it was a great find, this light is made by Luminaire authentic which is a lighting company based in Montreal that sells for over a thousand dollars and I bought it for 250.
You know those finds on Facebook Marketplace and you're like, yeah . that one was good, this color is like that too, so my parents love metallic lighting like this. It was never in the plan to open the roof, which we would have had to do if we wanted to wire this. My parents have tons of pot lights. Now that they're already a functional light source, I'm putting a little table lamp in here, so instead, for all my tenants, we're just going to screw it to the ceiling and then do our Puck Light trick. It looks so good like I'm getting old Misty Eyed yeah, I can't do anything about it.
Such a fun solution. Hit a lot today. Okay, that's at most. Alright. It looks so good. I was worried it would show. It's funny with all the pot lights but it's not like that at all, just the decorating mix gods were really on my side yesterday and I love it so you can buy the puck light with a bulb base like a single product or Like us, sometimes we buy them separately and then just glue the base to the Puck Light. You want to make sure the Puck Light opens from the top so you can change the batteries, but I'm going to screw it in, this is great.
I love it. I'm going to bring the rest of the chairs. I chose these from the article. You guys know how much I love the article. Furniture, but I specifically chose the lighter wood because I really wanted to play with different wood tones, so I mixed and matched. In the living room there are darker wood tones, the table is dark and I feel like it creates warmth when you mix and match, that's what we're doing. I am very excited about these chair cushions. These are from an Etsy shop. I'm going to Put the name on the screen and link them below.
The best thing about this store is that they make custom sized cushions to fit any dining room chair, so we gave them the exact measurements. They were very thorough with the photos they needed and I chose all of them. These different colors really play with the color here, but all the shades work really well together. I love how this table looks a little country but modern at the same time and then these cushions are just bringing this beautiful color, I'm so excited that they also have cute ties so let's tie some little bow ties overseas. All the vents, these are from cool grills, they've replaced all the vents in my parents' house and we're.
I'm so grateful because they make a big difference in this space, so I'm bringing this dresser. I think it's perfect here because my parents can save sets as placemats, extra silverware and then obviously I'm going to decorate the top so it really shows. beautiful, this is another vintage piece, by the way, my mom is a good saver. I have to say okay, I'm going to sign my artwork, it's all dry, this was Graham's idea, by the way, I don't think this is a masterpiece or anything. I actually did it myself, yes I took out the plexiglass because it was really reflective to our camera, but I actually like it a lot better, it looks like a textured piece of art similar to what we used at Austin Studio.
I'm trying, sorry, similar to the one we used in the Austin studio, so just a tip at the beginning. I thought lean is definitely the way to go, but I don't know if there's anything good about it, just having it's place on the wall feels more. vertical wall space I'm hanging art print with command strips now I'm designing the dining room table and I wanted to walk you through my process because I know designing a dining room table can be daunting so here's what I do over and over time. I love shopping for options of things, so two different colors of placemats, different glassware, you can always return what you don't use, but I really love having options.
I also love how this allows me to see how all the colors work together and then I can change things as I go, I try to do this while shopping but now that I'm in this space I can see everything more clearly and in better light as well which I immediately love this caramel brownie with the purple bowls oh. but this looks good too look at this oh ooh suddenly you have a little group of three colors that work together and then I'm going to build more. I always love dishes that have some kind of interesting pattern or texture that just creates. it looks a little more elevated, especially if it's in a neutral color and then paired with these types of basic bowls.
Look, it's so good that we could just do solid napkins and I want it to stand out a little more. This is definitely fun for the center, once I have it all set up I'll play with the bosses and see how they work, but you know what, let's actually put the placemats on the plates, the bowls, the cups and then we'll expand from Me I love that this matches the lights, so for the center of the table there are a couple of options that you can use with a long tray or one of those long bowls.
I want to call them feeders. No, Google says it's a feeder, but it basically is. like a long shallow tray and you can leave them out at all times. You can put candles on the tray or bowl or you can go simple like I'm doing, with just some green leaves in a box. You will never go wrong. What I like to do to anchor the vase in the center of the table is place the vase on some type of tray or trivet, it gives it a little more dimension. It makes it feel layered and more intentional than just dropping a vase into the hot medium. tip here The Greenery I'm using here is actually bouquet filler Greenery, so it's very economical.
I'm weaving in longer branches to make it look a little more interesting and fluid. I'll also bring in some chandeliers for a little height and now it's time for the finishing touches. I'm adding this checkered table lamp to the dresser. Curious fact. I actually brought this home with me from a trip to Los Angeles I took with Amanda. She brought it in my carry-on. She was like Security's Never Gonna Let You get over with two lamps. Fun fact they did this because here you put a cutting board and layer some of these wave bowls on top of the HomeSense.
What a great find - setting up a pitcher and flower coasters also from Homestead and finally hanging them. I framed this greeting card as art. I'm hanging it lower so you can see it under the huge hanging light, but it also looks really cool this way, oh my gosh, I can't believe this nothing room has turned into this thank you foreigner. I can't wait to sit at this table with my parents and sister and have dinner and I love being able to reuse a couple of pieces my parents already had. Suddenly this room feels much more intentional, flowing directly into the living room.
Fiddly Fig really brings these two spaces together and brings them together. Personalized art. Do we want to sell them? Do you want a custom piece of art for me? Let me know in the comments below. These seat cushions are so much fun and can we talk about them? Graham took this door as a barn door and made it fun. I love scallops. I love that it's a different shade of pink, so it plays with the entry. You know how obsessed I am with the lights I found for 250 dollars, it's incredible and I can't wait to reveal the space to my parents next Saturday, we will premiere the last episode of the series.
I do the upstairs guest bedroom and my parents will be here, they'll see every room we fade into. the whole house I really can't wait and I hope you'll join us be sure to subscribe so you don't miss the latest episode and as always I'll see you next week bye can I tell you? I can try? Throw it, that was a good shot, can I try to throw it? Oh, one more time, one more time, you can get dirty now.
