NOT What I Wanted To Find Inside A Saw Log

Mar 22, 2024
different parts of The Skit Steer welcome back to the friends of Sawmill. It's a beautiful day here in Northeast Tennessee and I have a lot to do today because we're supposed to have some terrible storms tomorrow. So are the things. It seems like this. It doesn't rain for about 3 days a year and once everything starts to dry out it finally rains again, I can't move forward like this, it's really irritating, we have a lot to do today guys, the first thing I need to do is change the diverter valve. the right direction so we can send some power to the thumb because I need to change some tires on a small wheelbarrow and you guys helped me with this when I asked you a question about it about 2 months ago, maybe further back than that.

I don't remember the other one here we go so like I was saying I asked you guys in a previous video where I could get some tires for this stroller made of rubber and I got several emails about it and I didn't know but I wasn't surprised that Amazon had them, so I received two in the mail the other day. For some reason, it took me like four weeks to get here. I'm not sure

what

happened there, but let's change them. I'm going to do it the easy way, so instead of getting on the ground and taking those wheels off and putting the new ones on, I'm going to use the excavator to lift it up a little bit in case I didn't mention it.

More Interesting Facts About,

not what i wanted to find inside a saw log...

The excavator is my new favorite machine. I use it every day. Here we go, that will make things easier. Yes, that shaft wants to rotate. There is nowhere to grab it, as usual. This will take me longer than expected. I spent about 15 minutes on it. for this job it will probably take me 30 that's how things go all the time if you think something is going to take 15 minutes double or triple because something always comes up this Axel here is rusty on this bolt and it's turning with the bolt and there's nowhere to grab the shaft or shaft

what

ever you want to call it to press it down so it doesn't turn, let's grab another tool.

I also have to keep an eye on the time today sometime later. 1:00 it's already 12:30 I think I'll get some Walnut LS on the dump trailer today. The key word is I guess you never know about that, or people say they're bringing some LS and sometimes they show up and sometimes I don't, but they almost never show up on time. I couldn't

find

that tool, but I have another idea: if I can reach both of them at the same time, that may stop that little shaft from spinning or should I tell you what's cool. about this I have my head here on this chicken manure, it's about a quarter full.

I should have emptied this before doing that, here we go, I have an impact gun, I don't know why in the world. I'm doing this by hand, let's get that thing out, that wheel was definitely ready to go to the landfill and before I go through all this trouble I better make sure the new ones fit this axle, it's about time we did a trip to the landfill. okay let's hope it fits, you never know okay a little bit of junk but what will it be used for okay now we can take this out for the rest and hopefully be able to put it back in there let's clean up. these threads and the nuts too, alright guys, almost done, put some spray grease in there and on the axle, this is not sponsor, this is Ams oil spray grease, really good stuff.
I use a lot of Amsoil stuff here lately. I really like it, it works great, here we go, this would be a much easier job if I had someone to help me. I have to reach this car and it's half full of manure, here we go, oh yeah, 100 times better, we bought this property. years ago and the previous owner, who ran this place as a rabbit farm there where the sawmill is, many of you may not know he had about 1,000 rabbits there, so this was a giant rabbit operation, probably the largest in the world. and this cart was left here every time they moved and they sold the place to us and he had gotten rid of the rabbits.
I think maybe 6 months before selling the place to us he had some health problems that's why he sold it if it wasn't for that it would probably be would have stayed, but this car stayed here with those same original tires that we just took off and they were dry, so I've been pushing to stay for 5 years with dry rot tires 5 years should I've done this a long time ago, 5 years of pushing this Oh my goodness, so someone asked me the other day in the comments if I was going to put in a garden this year or not and we're going to put in another big garden, probably the same one.
At the end of April, this year the garden will be a little different compared to recent years. I'm going to build some raised beds here in a red cedar tree. Alright, guys, on to something else. I need to put the top on. down on Mr. Cado and if you're wondering why I put the top up, there's nothing wrong with this machine. I had to change one of the filters, let me show you where it was, for those of you who are not familiar with these machines. If you need to work on the hydraulic system, there are four bolts right here at the bottom, once you loosen them, there are some pistons on each side that are pneumatic, they're air.
Pistons, I hope I said that right, my goodness, I'm really showing it. My uh, my lack of knowledge here about machinery, but uh, pneumatic pistons on each side and that lowers the cabin out of the way and it has a lock on the back, so I hope you can see that orange filter over there that's one of two hydraulic filters on Mr Cadoo, the other one you get to at the back of the engine and he tells you what, guys, stay with me and you'll learn something we're doing all sorts of things today, learning about skid steers and how to change tyres. wheelbarrows made of rubber some really technical stuff happening today alright folks we're shifting gears now to the sawmill before we bring in some cedar let's start on those rais beds today I need to finish this pine from last night This is a can of 7 inches, we are going to cut it into 2x6 for the equipment shed that we are going to start here in about two weeks and after that is done, I will bring in some cedar because you have to strategically plan your sawmill and especially when bad weather is approaching, for which is going to rain tomorrow which means I don't want to be here in the mud moving LS around and making a mess so I want to line up some things I can work on. inside even though it's raining and Cedar is just I need to mill about 52 by six for the raised beds in the garden this year so we'll start on them today and finish them hopefully tomorrow you guys can hold on.
Alright guys, very briefly, if you're wondering why when I flipped the can over I made my first cut and got this little 3/16 inch board or whatever you want to call it from above, there's a reason why I did this, let me show you, guys, so on the Super 70 you have what's called a pattern button right there, which is Auto Up and Auto Down, you set their heights based on what you want to do on them, but there's a really cool feature here. It's called pattern mode, you press it so you can set different patterns. I'm not sure how many more you can set up than I probably need, but if you go to number two right here, which is what I was at 2 a.
C. two, where am I now? I can't see the screen. I'm looking at the camera, so when you go to 2C, the pattern mode requires /4 cuts all the way down and what that does is it puts you in a position where when you start cutting you either lift your trunk or you can't, in In this case that sounds much better. The first cut will be a waste or it might fall perfectly where you want it, but it usually doesn't end up the way it did right there, but rather when you make the pattern. In the mode you start making 9/4 cuts, which is 2 and 1/4 inches thick and you end up with the same thing at the bottom of the mill now if you do the Auto mode down, let's say to two and uh two and A4 , which is the same thing, you still get 9 quarter boards, but your last board could be a/inch it could be a quarter inch it could be an inch and a half I don't know where it's going to land I don't know until I put it there, but when you do pattern mode on that same setting your bottom board will always be whatever it is set to and you can set this to anything you want, you can set this to 9/quarter boards all the way. here and on the bottom board, let's say you want a 4x4, you set that to 4 in this feature is really good for production guys or guys that are taking care of a lot of railroad ties, you'll see Gray Lumber around the trunk and then you'll take the pith you cut it in the middle and turn it into a railroad tile or maybe a wooden pallet and they will configure that bottom for the width or thickness that they want from their wooden pallet, so this is a really nice feature, it's on the Super 70.
It was also on the lt40 I had, it was called acus set 2, it's a little different here on the Super 70, but it's a really cool feature and you can also have Auto up and auto down, like I said before. there are all kinds of presets for that and while we're on this screen someone asked me this the other day in the comments, they asked me if I could control the speed of the sawmill. Sure I can control that with this joystick right here, but also control it with this setting right here at the top. You press that button.
Let me go back there. I can't see what I'm doing. I'm looking over the camera, so right there you can see me moving forward. the sawmill is faster in its stroke or slower in its stroke right there. Then, here on the left, that establishes how much water is going to come out of the lubrication system. I keep mine pretty low most of the time, okay guys it's a little windy. Here today it looks like my client just arrived and has a dump trailer, that's good. I don't have to download them. I can only point out where the logs should go.
You can press the button and get out of here. unload them or show them where to unload instead, we'll go back to this sawmill, we're going to work on some cedar next, okay, go ahead, that's good, okay, guys, let's see what we've got. These are customer records. They hired me to cut them, but I'm not going to dry them, I'm just going to cut them. That one over there doesn't look so bad. That one over there looks pretty good. It looks like 10 Footers has a five footer right here in the front with a nice crotch. It should have a fantastic grain hidden just under the bark.
Looks like they put some latex paint on it. I'll probably put an anchor stamp on these after we see them that one over there isn't too bad, decent size I think these were garden trees so I have to be careful with the metal and that's why we have a lot of sapwood on the roots, so here's the last one and I told him this one is a little small and it's hard to do anything with it. I have a dog leg on the other end. I'll probably get rid of it and most likely recommend the client see it in a Manel and put it in the Barn Loft and forget about it for about 5 years because there's so much stuff. it has sapwood and the diameter is very small, let me check it here real quick at 12 inches, but you only have about 8 inches of heartwood right there, a 6x8 Manel would be a good idea for that little log over there.
I think that's the best way to deal with something like that when it's small, but other than that, these other four look pretty good. We're doing 9/4 Live Edge slabs on all four. Now let's head here to the mill and get Mr. Cado and bring some cedar. I think I have about 12 or 15 cedar blocks here that we need to saw, we are going to make 2x sixes and I think I can make a nominal size which is the store bought size and I need to make some 4x4s, also you guys hang in there, come on, it's well, folks at The Sawmill, we have Eastern Red Cedar, some of you like to call it Juniper, it doesn't really matter, at the end of the day, everyone knows what.
We call it red cedar around here or ERC, the same as eastern red cedar, and this is not a good saw. Friends, I'll go and tell you that from the front we're looking at 8 and 1/2 feet and just some awfully big knots right here at the bottom and it's swelling up a little bit. I had to use my baseboard down here to lift the other end. This is not a good saw log. I would never buy a log like this, but I may have. I don't remember where this came from. I may have bought it, I didn't realize how bad it was, who knows, but anyway, what is that?
What is that over there? Okay, I thought it was metal sticking out. You never know about these. Cedar folks, a lot of them come from fences, you're going to hit nails all the time and with cedar, unlike walnut, unlike oak, you're not going to see any stain down here on the end that tells you there's metal, no. you have idea until I saw it, that's how it works sometimes, so I need to cut some 2x6's. I want them to be an inch and a half thick and 6 inches wide and I also need to cut some 4x4s for the raised beds.
I'm going to try to get a 6 inch can out of this, but if I can't, I'll make a 4 inch can and we'll do a 4x4 on this one. We might get two 4x4s if we're lucky, if we get 2x sixes. maybe three, but that's probably wishful thinking. I don't knowWhat is going to happen. To be honest, this opening face cut will tell us a lot because we have some exclusions or inclusions of bark, rather in there, it's not a very good saw. log, but for raised beds it doesn't really matter, we'll get something out of it.
I'm thinking 4x4, probably two 4x4 though, if I get it I'll be happy, so on Saw Mill to Jo main SilverTip turbo 7 if you want to try those swords, his name is Joe main, his cell phone number is in the video description and I think that's it, what else was I going to cover here? I don't remember what I was going to cover. I'm going to tell you something that was coming up and now I don't remember what I was going to tell you, maybe I will remember after making this record. Alright guys, we got two 4x4s of that metalless one and two extra boards. right here at the top they come in 3 and A4 in thickness, they're 4 the other way so that's good because I can still use them in the corners of my raised beds because they'll be buried in the dirt, uh, raised beds . of course its a triangle not a triangle omg a rectangle it will be 4T by 8T and the 4x4's will be on the inside of the raised bed not the outside so you will never see them they will be covered by dirt , so if they're not exactly 4x4 in the dimensions, that's okay and we have a little bit of bark here on this side and that's not going to matter either, so good deal, this will do or this will make this enough for one. two two raised beds up to the corner post, that's a good deal, the next job coming up will definitely be another 4x4, it's pretty small and next we should get some 2x6s out.
The key word is should and if you're wondering. Why shouldn't I drag my slabs? I still have a giant 2 x six pine PW here on the table and I'm a little lazy. I still can't get them out. I have to do it though. That's the sawing part, you don't see, you see the wood opening up and all these pretty boards and they run this magnificent machine here. It is a pleasure to drive this machine. It's a lot of fun, guys, just operating this saw. alone is worth the price of ADM Mission that comes here every day, but the part that you don't always see is the one that is filled with the wood that you saw because it doesn't stack itself and I have machines that can be transported, but you still have than stack it.
I wish they made a machine that would stack your wood. That would be good, maybe one day it will be okay, folks, it looks like the sawmill is down. We hit some metal on the last log. I got a 2x6 cut, actually half of it. one that has a pretty big void right there, but I'll at least take out a 4 footer and on my next cut, when I came down, I heard the m right there, so we hit a nail right there and that's where the blade goes messed up with it or the whole thing messed up with the blade and then I hit three more right there, my God, four Nails in this cedar tree, if you ever saw someone put a nail in a tree, guys, take their hand and tell them let them stop.
Gosh, that's aggravating, but that's part of it.
