I have nothing against ham radio, it's just sad hams that don't fall into the realm of sad hams. Check out my hero, my hero, his youtube channel. crash course let him know that Randy from Not a Rubicon sent gmrs and ham support repeaters now if you don't understand what a repeater is, a repeater is a great way, it's a device that allows you to talk further away from your portable device. from any radio but it is great to use with a portable or mobile radio it basically rebroadcasts your signal so if you have a small portable radio and you only have a range of a couple of miles if there is a repeater nearby and you program your radio to use that repeater let's say the repeater is on a mountain you can reach that repeater but you can't reach a guy 20 miles away, well that repeater can reach the guy 20 miles away so you connect to the repeater, It retransmits and repeats your signal over a much wider area, so repeaters are a great way to get a much longer range from your radio.

A ham radio operator can configure his repeater any way he wants. Input frequency. Output frequency compensated. They can do it however they want. gmrs, all the repeater configurations are standardized and channelized, so it's repeater channel one, repeater channel two, which makes it very, very easy. If you want to use a repeater, simply place your radio on channel two of the repeater and you're done, you may have to enter a code to access. It's also very easy, but you don't have to worry about the input frequency, the output frequency, whatever it is, it's very easy. Amateur radio has been around for decades, I think 100 years ago.

Well, it's 2021, I think it's been around since the 1920s or earlier, so amateur radio has been around for a hundred years. Gmrs has been around for a couple of decades, but has only really become popular in the last few years. In the last two or three years it has really exploded because ham has been around for decades, let's say just a hundred years, when did ham start to go away? Someone who isn't a sad ham, please leave a comment, let us know when ham officially started, it's been around a long time. Longer than GMRS, which is why there are millions and millions and millions of licensed radio amateurs around the world.
The gmrs are not that many and because of this there are hundreds of thousands, maybe millions, of ham radio repeaters, it would be difficult to go anywhere in the United States. and find a place that is not covered by a ham radio repeater. The country is covered in gmrs, not that much, there aren't many gmrs repeaters out there because most gmrs operators just pick up their radio and talk while they walk or whatever and put it back in the global compartment when they're done, they're not thinking on gmrs repeaters, so as there are hundreds of thousands of ham radio repeaters, they have really built up a huge emergency communications infrastructure when the time comes. the fan the first thing that's going to stop working is your cell phone and those ham radio operators that infrastructure is a very important service that your hobby provides so again thank you thank you Josh for helping to bring more people into the hobby community that amateur radio has. many frequencies many bands hf vhf uhf most likely you don't know and someone will clarify it in the comments section below so millions of frequencies you could talk or use on ham radio gmrs are limited to one band and really a set of frequencies in the 462 megahertz range if you are using gmrs you don't even need to think about megahertz or gigabirts or anything they are just channels so in gmrs there are eight channels and it is because gmrs radios support repeaters there are eight more repeater channels on repeater capable radios, so at most gmrs only supports 30 channels and the gmrs is limited to only those channels channel one channel two channel three a ham can slide anywhere between those channels and choose any frequency to transmit.
If you have a fancy sideband that no one cares about unless you're a ham radio operator then it could be very important to you, so in ham radio you have a lot more places where you can talk on a lot more frequencies, gmrs, now it's very limited. Because gmrs is simpler, if you look at a ham radio you will almost always see all the buttons and it can be complicated, a gmrs radio can be very simple, it's a very simple interface, off channel, channel up, volume down, now it's gmrs. The radio may have extra buttons like you'd find on a ham radio, but it's not necessary because of this simplicity because gmrs is easier due to the limited channels that many hams sad the calling card is one of the ways to know what you're dealing with. with a sad person The ham is that they will call a GMR radio a toy, why would you use a toy when you could use a manly radio like my $600 ham radio?
Well Mr Sat, let me explain to you, many people can do everything they want with their 29 or 89 gmrs radio if I can do everything I want with my toy, why would I want to spend 600 to do the same? I think it would be stupid to do it the next time someone calls your radio. A toy looks down on you for using a toy, that's how you know you're dealing with a sad radio ham. It is one of the dead gifts. GMRS radios have a maximum allowable power of 50 watts. Amateur radio and different bands can go much higher. may be i don't know if it's unlimited, i don't know, i don't care, the point is that gmrs is limited to 50 watts, enough for most of us normal people, so what kind of people do you find that gravitate towards ham radio vs using gmrs radio gmrs is generally for a normal person who just wants to talk to their friend, maybe they are hiking, maybe they are on a jeep, maybe it is a group of people they want to talk to, they want to listen to a radio .
They want to push the button, they want the guy on the other end of the line to hear what they have to say and then hopefully that other guy will respond to them, they don't want to have to take a test just so they can talk to their friend. They just want to turn it on and talk. Many GMRS users, not all, many have active outdoor lifestyles, off-roading, hiking, caravanning, camping, you name it, they just need a tool they can turn on, press the button and talk to someone when they're done. With the radio of the day, they turn it off, they throw it back in the glove compartment and they don't think about it at all, it's just a tool that they use and when they're done, they put it away.
For many amateur radio operators, the lifestyle is the radio, now we understand it, not all of us know that we all They are different I am speaking in generalities amateur radio is a lifestyle it is a hobby many amateur radio operators want to see how far they can talk or how many people they can talk to around the world how many contacts they can make they want to learn how they can modify their radio with the choke rf and things to reduce spurious rf output or how they can squeeze every little watt out of the radio or bounce your signal off the moon they talk to their friends their other ham friends about which oscilloscope is best to use when tuning the frequencies on their amplifier end of exit whatever it is a hobby it's a lifestyle it's not just a tool it's a way of life now there's nothing wrong with that's what you choose to do some people fix cars some people like computers some people don't like making youtube videos we all have our hobbies some ham radio operators just get their license so they can talk while driving off road they don't necessarily get into that hobby and lifestyle and fall down that rabbit hole but for many, maybe most amateur radio operators, it's that whole lifestyle, not that there's anything wrong with that now for many latent amateur radio operators who don't do it.
They don't realize they are a ham radio operator yet, they might come in, they might start on gmrs and it acts as a gateway, maybe they get their gmrs radio, start talking, realize it's fun to talk to other people who are far away and then start. they use repeaters and want to learn more and then move on, some say they move on to amateur radio and it becomes a lifestyle for them again, not that there is anything wrong with us accepting them as they are as long as they don't. Don't turn me into the dreaded sad ham, let me take a minute to clarify what a sad ham is because a lot of people, many, many times, say that on my YouTube channel I bash ham radio operators.
I don't knock amateur radio operators. I hit what we call what normal people call sad hams and if I'm attacking sad hams and you feel like I'm attacking you then you may be a sad Jamaican and you may need to look deeply into your behavior and in your thinking and see if you are a sad ham, the sad ham or the ham operators that you find, you will find them on online forums, mainly on online forums, you will see them posting comments on YouTube videos, you will see them in groups from Facebook, you will see them. online you rarely find a sad ham in person, I don't think I've ever come across a sad ham in the real world, they tend to stay in the basement and gravitate towards the internet for some reason, they're the ones who leave. the condescending comments uh for people asking legitimate questions who just want help, a newbie who wants to get into the ham is asking questions and the sad ham is the guy who acts like you're too stupid to get into the ham, oh, what?
You didn't pass the test, right? someone says: oh, you are too dumb to take the exam, did you fail the exam? That's a sad ham. They leave those know-it-alls condescending. I'm smarter than now. Comments. You will often find two sad hams arguing online. Who's right about some stupid, insignificant little detail about something that's nothing and no one cares about and you can spend days and weeks trying to prove who's smarter and actually both end up looking like idiots, you know what I'm talking about? talking? have you seen these guys before if you have seen these sad hams online because a lot of sad hams say im just making this up its not true if so i want to know your sad hams story leave a comment with your sad hams stories with the sad hams you've come across online, so hopefully some of the sad hams or people working their way into sad damage can read it and realize that they are becoming or may be becoming sad hams, maybe we can help put an end to it because they are killing their own hobby by scaring away beginners and people asking legitimate questions to sum it all up in just a couple of sentences. gmrs is like cb radio, it's for people who just want to talk to someone when you're done talking, throw the radio back in the glove compartment or closet.
Amateur radio is a way of life. If you have any questions, leave a comment below if you have a sad story. Oh please, stop your sad stories. We love reading them. Hopefully some. of thesad radio hams will read them and realize the path they have traveled, the mistakes they have made, the bad decisions they have made in their life, thanks for watching, we look forward to seeing
