Reuniting My Foster Kittens With Their Feral Mom!

Mar 29, 2024
These are my new

foster

kittens

, they were found during a storm and when they arrived they were so frozen they could barely move even though they had a mom with them, they needed to be picked up immediately to be saved and stabilized. It's not safe to feed a frozen kitten, so all I could do at first was let them warm up in the incubator. After an hour, they were warming up and started to squirm a little, so I encouraged them to go to the bathroom and weighed them. and I offered them little drops of food, but they were too weak to eat.

I gave them some oral dextrose, some subcutaneous fluids and let them continue to warm up in the incubator while our friend caught the mom cat, but mom was

feral

and when they released her. In the

foster

room she wasn't having it, she panicked trying to escape and the rest of the night she sat on the windowsill whistling at anyone who came near. I hoped she would accept the babies from her now that they were warming up, so I placed them. in a box in the room with a heating pad underneath and I left them there with a camera so I could watch and see if mom would join them, but she never did.

She stood at the window terrified that night. I visited them every few hours for bottle feeding and at first they didn't really understand but eventually they started to get hungry and get used to it the next day, the mom still didn't come with them but at least the babies were getting very good at drinking from a bottle afterwards From the night they nearly died of hypothermia in a frozen puddle, I was very happy to see them looking good and finally getting some nutrition, but it's best for newborn

kittens

to be with

their

mom, so now I had to discover it.

How was I going to reunite them once and for all? Mom wasn't going to go alone with them, so I placed her babies in a large covered kennel, then I trapped her in the mesh kennel and slid the two kennels together until she finally ran to be with her babies, after just a few minutes with her babies, she went into care mode. You see that

feral

cats love

their

babies just as much as socialized cats, they just don't love people and that's why with feral moms and babies, it's often a better idea to keep them fully contained and covered so they don't focus on be around humans, just focus on being with your babies, as you can see in these videos, everything got so much better for both mom and baby, once she was contained and covered and not allowed to have too much space to wandering into the kitten chamber, I could see that she was a very sweet mother cat who took fantastic care of her babies, even if when I was around she was very irritating, but since they had just been reunited, I needed to make sure that they were nursing well and that she was nursing enough to feed them, so I recorded them and weighed them.

I used a spatula to help me pick up the babies by sliding them towards me and Picking them up mom doesn't love it oh my gosh wow that was a good scare mom but during those first few days it's a very important part of the monitoring process. There's Miss Veronica. Miss Veronica turned 136 last night and this morning she is, oh my goodness. Oh my god, 148 holy cow, your mom is treating you right now that I know the kittens are getting enough nutrition. I can give mom a little more distance to lessen her stress and in a few weeks her babies will be big enough to eat on their own and she can finally be spayed and returned to the cat colony where she lives, where she she feels more comfortable.
I love these little babies and am so grateful they were able to be reunited with their mom so they can have a great head start. These babies were found in a puddle in a storm, but after a storm comes a rainbow and what could be more rainbow than the names of Lisa Frank characters from the 90s, so that's what we call these guys after who are all named after different Lisa Frank characters, we have a hunter who is named after the leopard, we have Forrest who is named after the tiger cub, we have Miss Veronica who is named after a very blue cat elegant and we have percilla priscilla, who is named after a very majestic white cat and how could I resist the temptation to name him? cat mom kitten angel mom kitten angel is named after a white cat with rainbow wings and yes it's a little silly because of course she's not very angelic around humans but that doesn't mean she's not a fantastic mom You are obviously doing a beautiful job with them and I couldn't be happier raising a feral cat with your kittens is a truly rewarding experience.
