Battle of the short travel 29er trail bikes // Ibis Ripley vs Transition Spur

Mar 30, 2024
this felt incredibly good, it was smooth, it was boosted, so you have the rock jump and then you go up the hill to the little kicker, what's up guys? I've been riding the

transition

spur

together on the

ibis

ripley

now I'm like I'm speechless these are probably two of the best

bikes

available right now if your speed isn't very high if you're not going to lift the service bike parks with 20 foot spaces, everything below I don't know how you do it. better than these two

bikes

, it's amazing. I've been riding this uh iva like a shrimp for a year and a half.

Now I feel very comfortable on it, I have so much confidence every time I sit on this bike that I feel at home. on the right bike for me and that's why I've kept this bike for so long. I usually change my bikes every four to six months and I constantly get new bikes because I demo a lot of different bikes thanks to the youtube channel and that's why I'm always something new or something flashy comes out and I get excited and I have to have it and, you know, now Same in my house I have a pivot switch blade, a yeti sp 130, a rocky mountain altitude that came out recently.

More Interesting Facts About,

battle of the short travel 29er trail bikes ibis ripley vs transition spur...

There's a video coming that I have my Ripley here. There may be room for a

transition

al stimulus. Who knows. I'll have to ask my wife and see if there's room in the bike room for it, but there is plenty. There are a lot of good bikes out there right now, but if I could only have one, ah man, this Ripley would be really hard to pass up, so now I've spent more time transitioning. Very similar bicycles, both have millimeter

travel

in the rear. In the rear Ripley comes with a 130 fox 34 uh and the

spur

comes with a 120 uh rockshox sid ultimate and man I'm amazed at how good that transition spur is.

It's crazy how good it is. I would say it feels more stable. at higher speeds than the Ripley, I think it's a little bit longer bike, probably that's why the rear, that suspension in the rear for that little can that little shock back there, it's surprising how well that thing works, even long descents, you know, it's really impressive and I would say maybe a little bit more composed, a little bit smoother, um through the chunky sections and the high speed, not even the really chatty sections, but just stuff from high speed when you are hitting a lot. of chatty things at high speed, the bike just feels on point and I would say that's, you know, if you want to end the video right now, this is the last thing I'll say and then you can finish, but that.

The bike, I would say, is a little more precise than this bike, a little more laser focused than the Ripley and that's probably the most obvious difference, and then speaking of the Ripley, the Ripley is probably a little smoother on the way. It feels like it's not as stiff of a frame, just a little bit softer, a little more fun, a little more forgiving, a little easier to ride, probably um, so that's quite a deal, although I feel like the stimulus of Transition is just a business, man, you just can. just hammer that thing and you'll be ready for this.
This is a little softer but really good. It is not as precise as the transition stimulus. A little more forgiving. A little easier to handle. A little softer. And that's it, that's it, that's the video. Seriously, let's talk about climbing, climbing, ah, I don't know, I need, I need a little more time on that spur. The spur could take advantage of the climb. I can't believe I'm saying that right now, it's September 2020. I've been making this bike for a year and a half, it's incredibly close, you guys like flipping a coin, they're actually really good, best

29er

mountain bikes for climbing available right now, bam, a seal, I seal it, it's uh, they're both really good.
I would say for me, being five foot eight, they are both medium, this cabin feels a little more comfortable for me, it is a little

short

er where the transition spur is a little longer. I would definitely use a 35 mil stem if I bought a transitional spur,

short

en that stem and use shorter bars, but yeah, this is probably a little more comfortable for me at five foot eight in a size medium. Downhill, this bike feels faster from side to side, it's much easier. to maneuver through slightly tricky, small, sneaky sections of

trail

, you can, you know, you can move it very simple, very easy, I think that's because the bike is not as rigid, the transition is more like it's in the path. come on it's like it's on rails it's almost on the line it's going to follow and it stays on that line it's very precise and um I would say this bike the harder you ride it uh in the transition the harder you ride it the more it gives you, the more you want to push yourself, um, the transition might be that a person who is a really talented cyclist, like a really skilled cyclist, you're a really strong cyclist, you might like the encouragement more, in fact, I think you do. you'll get.
You get more use out of that bike because the harder you ride the bike, the better it adapts to that transitional spur, whereas Ripley, yeah, you know my wife, she rides it, you know, once or twice a week, stuff. for which he is not in much of a hurry. going up the hill she's not very big hurting herself down the hill she wants to have a good time this is probably more her speed here um which is weird to say because it's not like this bike is a bike or anything like me I've been using it for a year and a half and I've been riding it big time, you know, I ride it really hard, but the harder I ride this bike, the more I feel like I find its limitations when I really push it. tough through some really tough corners, I can feel it, it doesn't feel supple on me, but I'm pretty light, I'm a smaller guy, but I can imagine a 200 pound guy would maybe fill this bike out, it feels a little bit.
I flexed on it maybe a little bit and um, we're in transition momentum now, I don't think, I don't think you feel like I think that bike is very robust, very precise, that bike leans more towards the

trail

four pivot. to nine spectrums of short course bikes, which I would like to have that bike here today. It would be a great head to head with those three bikes because I would put the transition spur directly in the middle of the Ripley and pivot trail 429. I had the pivot 1249 about two years ago when it first came out and then I went to the yeti sb100 and then I went to the

ripley

and I was stuck on the ripley for a year and a half because it's so good, I would say another thing about the transition that I really like is that in my area, here in Utah, there aren't that many transitions, so when I go out to the trail I usually see a Ripley or a pair of Ripleys. the trail, the spur, I don't see that many, so that's an interesting factor, you know, there aren't that many, at least in my area, and then the other thing about the spur is the six thousand dollar price tag.
Uh, I don't know what your situation is, that may seem like a lot of money to you, but bikes are getting a little expensive here in 2020, you know, right now, but for six grand that bike only weighs 25 pounds. There aren't many bikes out there that for six grand weigh 25 pounds. It's pretty impressive. Construction kit. I picked up the bike from Salt Cycles. Here in Sandy Utah. If you're not familiar with them, check them out. uh they're at

ibis

yeti pivot cannondale and transition dealer and the best thing about buying your bike from chris at salt cycles is that the bike for six grand comes with x01 sram x01 right drivetrain and guide brakes, well you could say hi chris, I want that bike, but would you mind swapping the x01 for an xt or xtr?
I want xtr brakes or whatever. He is more than happy to custom build. He has such a large inventory of parts and everything he can customize to build your bike however you want. That first class personal service is incredible and they are the nicest guys in the world, so I would definitely contact Chris if you are looking at the Spur or the Ripley. I have links to both bikes in the description. Below this video, um and uh, you can see more details, but they both have a head tube angle of about 66 degrees, 66 and a half on the Ripley, although I have increased my Ripley up to 140 millimeters of

travel

to loosen it up. the bike a little bit, so they both have on these two bikes a head tube angle of 66 degrees and a seat tube angle of about 76 degrees and that's the perfect geometry.
The pivot switch blade, ironically, also has very similar geometry to both bikes, but it's a 160 fork and a 140 uh two actual rear travels. I'm trying to think of any of the other obvious differences. You know, I mean the transitional stimulus. One thing that's a little annoying is that they still have that. rear brake uh brake cable on the outside of the frame, which is what you know for 2020, you know, I think they should have done it all in-house, I think they do it for racing purposes, but I don't know how often you do it. guys, replace the rear brake cable, you don't know about it that often, and besides, it's very easy to run it through the frame anyway, so you know one point, better, better frame construction, in my opinion, you know , possibly with all the cables routed internally, while the transition has the only cable on the outside um other than that, I mean, look, look, look at all the transitions, uh, alignment right now, all of their bikes are just amazing , they look really, really nice, I would say the transition is the best looking bike in my opinion if that's the case.
Mind you, it also comes in blue, Ripley comes in this color than black, also in matte black, but the differences between these bikes are subtle. Like I said, this bike feels maybe a little softer without that bike. a bit stiffer and that bike is more precise, it's also more stable at speed even though it has a shorter travel fork which is strange but I would say the bike is more stable at speed and this one probably Be a little faster in tight areas. The tighter areas of the trail at lower speeds, this will feel a little more rewarding, a little faster, a little faster to ride on the high speed sections, that's probably the most rewarding bike, but what a great time to be a mountain bike, there are so many good things. options right now, these are two of the best short travel bikes available right now for a trail bike that you won't drive yourself crazy simulating chicken speed all the time, it'll probably be that way if your speed is a little more high, a little faster.
You could look at the yeti sb 130 or the pivot switch blade, they give you similar geometry and still climb pretty well, but a little more travel for those really high speed days.
