much

does

it

world

? I know a lot of people assume I'm rich or have a trust fund and that's not the case. You will be surprised to know that it is.

much

cheaper than you think, so I drove the entire Pan American Highway from Alaska to Argentina and I drove all over Africa and of all the questions I get asked, money is by far the number one topic, so I know them from TRUE.

how much does it cost to drive around the world real numbers from real overland travellers...

A quick note whenever I say dollars, I mean US dollars, somehow my brain just defaults to that now, after so many countries around the

world

, and therefore throws out the number that is there right now so you understand where we are when I drove from Alaska to Argentina I spent about $1,200 a month on absolutely everything right, that's actually not a lot of money, in fact before I went on the trip I was spending more than that just to go to work every day in one city when I paid for rent, car insurance, gym membership, and some weekend activities, I had already surpassed that $1,200 mark, so to put it in context, it

does

n't have to cost.

If you have more money to

drive

around the world, then you're already spending it every month staying where you are, so that's what I spent, but what about other people and other parts of the world? Well, it turns out that when you meet other travelers around the world, money quickly becomes a topic of discussion and soon everyone wants to know how much we each spend and how we own money, so in the course of my adventures I have talked to literally hundreds of lenders about this and I feel like I have a very good idea of how much the average person spends and what I say these days is that when you put two people in a four wheel drive vehicle to drive to Anywhere on the planet probably 90% of people spend between $1,500 a month and $2,500 a month and that's for absolutely all expenses when I say all expenses if you ask a question yes that's included vehicle maintenance visas temporary import permits activities like national parks things like diving food accommodation gas you name it that's in that price, in fact I've met many people who fall into that price range that even include the cost of flying home once a year year to visit their families, which includes plane tickets and vehicle storage while they are away.

There is only Asterix which usually does not involve the price of the vehicle because most people have the vehicle before the trip and will still have it after the trip, so I am just editing this video and I need to cut it. here and add something. I don't want you to think that you need a highly-prepared vehicle to drive around the world. When I drove from Alaska to Argentina, the small Jeep I took cost me $5,000. I spent a total of $50 on modifications and when I reached the end of the road in Argentina. I sold it for $5,000, so that vehicle actually cost nothing.
My other friends have driven all over the world in vehicles that cost two thousand three or five thousand dollars. People spend only a few hundred dollars. on modifications so I just wanted to chime in and say don't assume you have to spend a lot of money on a vehicle because that's not true either so obviously my range is pretty big from 1500 to 2500 and you're probably wondering what makes that difference and to be completely honest that difference is up to you, it's totally your choice where you fall within that range, so other than gas the most expensive things will be food and accommodation, so it's your choice how much you will spend on them if you are willing.
If you want to cook all your meals and are happy not to drink too much alcohol, then you can definitely keep it on the lower end as far as accommodations go. If you wild camp the vast majority of nights you will save a tremendous amount of money and in fact I know many people who have kept it under that $1,500 a month figure by doing exactly that, on the other hand if you like to eat in restaurants, if you like to have a bottle of wine with dinner and you want to pay for hotels where you can have a hot shower and Wi-Fi and other luxuries, then you're certainly going to get that $2,500 a month figure and, in fact, people spend more than that and it has a pretty luxurious ride, does that surprise you?
Does the figure seem much lower than you thought? How much do you think it cost? Did you think only National Geographic types could drive around the world? If it surprises you, leave a comment below and let me know how much. You were thinking that now it costs, obviously, different parts of the world cost different amounts of money, but you would be surprised to know that they are all extremely similar and in fact, I think they are so similar that they are actually not even worth mentioning when I drove. From Alaska to Argentina, when I drove through Africa or when I talked to people who drove through the Middle East or Central Asia, we all spent really similar amounts of money and there is no doubt that the most expensive thing about

overland

ing is gasoline or diesel for your vehicle, So what that means is that the more you drive every day or every month, the more money you will spend, so if you set out to drive to Alaska and back in just one month, you will obviously spend quite a bit of gas, so your monthly expenses They will seem very high, but if you plan that trip for three or five months, you won't be driving very far every day, so suddenly your daily expenses are much less, of course the trip is longer.
But there is a sweet spot somewhere where you don't drive very far every day and therefore don't spend too much money on gas each month. The other way I've heard it said is that some people spend about $1 per mile for any location. van, so if I look at that, that would mean that from Alaska to Argentina I would have spent $40,000, which I didn't, but I went for about 24 months, so if we say I was in that range of about $2,000 a month, which is right in the middle of my number from 1500 to 2500, then I would have spent approximately forty-four thousand dollars, so actually a dollar a mile is not far off and I have heard many other lenders say that that suits them like Well, I want to intervene here again and add that I find it really interesting that one of these is priced in dollars per month which doesn't really take into account how far you drive each day and the other option is in dollars per mile which doesn't really take into account how long it takes you to drive those miles, so it's an interesting way to look at it either way and what I find is that both are a useful way to evaluate a good budget and possibilities.
If the amount you spend will be close to the two figures I have given you, what you need to remember is that a long-term learning journey is not like you are on vacation for two weeks and you only need to multiply that by a year to see how much landing is difficult. It's very different because every day you're exploring beautiful little towns and places that you don't really need to spend a lot of money to have these really wonderful experiences. local people, if you eat street food on the side of the road it is often extremely cheap, it is not the same as going and paying for some kind of all inclusive holiday, it is much, much cheaper, keep that in mind because gas is the biggest expense.
It's not twice as expensive for two people to travel in a vehicle and, similarly, if it's three or four people, it starts to get a lot cheaper per person because gas money is shared among everyone in many parts of the world. Two visas cost nothing. money so it doesn't cost every time you cross a border, so to put this into perspective and give you some real world

numbers

, I met a couple of guys who were driving across West Africa from Europe to South Africa. and for the two of them for about six months they were only going to spend ten thousand US dollars.
Let's be clear about this. West Africa is probably the biggest land adventure you can have on the entire planet driving through the Congo Nigeria Angola these places are so wild it's hard to believe and for $10,000 you have to go and have that adventure which is much cheaper than what most people assume. The same story for the Pan-American highway. My friends Joe Emmy just got back. In fact, she ended her trip just before coronavirus hit. He spent less than nine hundred dollars a month for his 23 month trip, he drove 40,000 miles through 17 countries, he had the adventure of a lifetime and he spent less than $1,000 a month to have that adventure, that's crazy, if you want to learn more About Joe Amy, I have links to his Facebook and Instagram in the description.
