I Was Wrong about iPhone 14

Apr 02, 2024
Good morning, Drew. I see you're enjoying that new iPhone. No, I'm not Tim. It's okay, but it's not that different. It's not exactly what you expected. No. All the leaks were correct and I got everything exactly as I expected. I thought I'd admit it, draw, you were

wrong

about a lot of our products, there were just a couple of little details that I got hung up on, okay, draw, you really like the iPhone 14, right? Not necessarily, but that's okay, I will give up. and admit that there were a lot of things we got

wrong

and you surprised me a little.

Okay, I think it's safe to say more than just a little. Okay, you want me to come this time. Let's get started. I wanted to recap something like that. Five main things I was wrong about the iPhone 14 Pro and the line as a whole and they're not necessarily things that just leaked. There were also a lot of concerns and things I had after the announcement that now that I've used the iPhone. I have a little more experience and opinions, but the first one that is staring us in the face and that was the biggest surprise is the dynamic island, yes, we call it the eye hole all year round and the funny thing about that report is that it was As Technically Accurate, we were wrong in the execution of how Apple was going to handle the eye hole, but in terms of the hardware and the design that was technically right, there are two cutouts and there are pixels between those cutouts, we were wrong in our assumptions. how Apple would handle that through software, we all assumed it would be like the notch and Apple would just pretend it's not there and just say it's the newest look of the iPhone I guess, but what definitely surprised me was how well Apple did it. full. iOS now even shows the dynamic island in screen recordings, but of course all of its dynamic features are shown for phone calls.

More Interesting Facts About,

Timers now play widgets that you can hold down and expand and deal with ID now every time you activate it, it leaves that little island. These things no one was really announcing or predicting and in my opinion that was by far the biggest surprise and I feel comfortable saying something that I was wrong. You know, I used to describe it as a top-rated side, but I didn't expect Apple to do it. It turns the notch into a feature where a lot of people say, "Oh geez, my old iPhone doesn't have a dynamic island, you have to live with a static peninsula." The second thing was something that we actually understood in the leaks, if you remember, way back.

There were some videos I made talking about how Apple was planning to get rid of the physical SIM card in the iPhone 14 lineup and I was quite concerned about that and I was pretty outspoken even after it was announced and Apple confirmed that American iPhones wouldn't. get SIM tray back I expressed a lot of frustration around that and some of it is still justified because certain carriers are not good with ESIM and people abroad traveling will have a hard time switching carriers now but in my own country. Personal experience now with Esim. I use Mint Mobile, I'm not a sponsor or anything.

I just chose their service because it was affordable and I like Ryan Reynolds, but they made the switch to Esim incredibly easy, so I thought because I'd never done it before. It was going to be a huge headache or I was going to have to call someone and wait for hours and I had heard all these horror stories from my friends about how frustrating esim can be, but I was so happy to hear that you just downloaded Mint Mobile. app, you tap a button that says "this is my new phone." I want an e-sim on this phone and within two minutes I transferred my phone number to the new iPhone and realized I didn't have to.
I used a sim tray removal tool which was quite useful and didn't take long and I didn't have to reset the phone or anything, it just started working, I just touched a few buttons and suddenly the antenna bars started. showing up on my phone I get phone calls I get text messages so I thought it was going to be a bigger problem than it actually ended up being and after finally converting my physical SIM to an electronic SIM I now realize how simplified and how simplified it can be that process, and while I'm sure it will be annoying during this conversion process, especially since many carriers are not as smart as Mint Mobile and have made the process of switching to Esim more complicated and my heart is racing.
For all of you, I'm now starting to side with Apple a little bit more, where I think that even though Esim isn't well understood by all carriers, I'm a little bit glad now that Apple is going to start accelerating that transition. because they basically sent this message to all the carriers saying that hey we sell the best selling phones in the world and we're moving away from physical sims so you better put your axes together and I think it's similar to Apple getting rid of the jack for headphones or get rid of usb-a or firewire or cd drives like at first we were all upset about this but I think in the long run it will be a good thing for carriers to come together to make esim a little more of a streamlined process and easy to activate, even if it's not ultimately something I'm in favor of nowadays, after trying it out, it feels so simple and so minimal to be like this, this is my new phone, put the SIM card here and then the phone.
I only have his new phone number, so I changed my position a little on this and I know it will be annoying for many of you, but I think in the long run it will help make the iPhone design more streamlined and better. battery life or better water resistance and ultimately making the Sims a lot safer too, it feels a little dated that they are 20 22 and many of us still want to deal with these physical cards to know which phone you have what number, as in the future. has arrived, you should know that it is your new phone and I think we will all benefit in the long run.
The third thing I got wrong is more of a technical specs thing, but I really expected it because the camera bumps were getting bigger and the chassis was rumored to be getting a lot bigger and the weight would be substantially higher and I I was pleasantly surprised to find that the iPhone 14 Pro Max weighs almost exactly the same weight as the 13 Pro Max, which was already a bit uncomfortable to hold in my opinion. and it's approaching that uncomfortable size for many people, but I thought the weight was going to be much worse or more noticeable than it ended up being.
It's basically identical to the 13 pro max, there's only a difference of like 0.01 ounces, which you won't notice the weight might even change if it's just raining and your phone picks up a few more water droplets, that's how small the difference is. the one we're talking about here, but yeah, I was wrong about that, I thought the 14 was going to be a lot more than what the number four ended up being is something that pleasantly surprised me all year because there was a rumor about Apple adopting a 48 megapixel camera that made everyone assume that Apple must be making the jump to 8k video correctly because other androids have had 8k video recording and I was hoping that Apple would do the same and keep chasing those numbers and say yeah, okay, You can now record 8k on an iPhone and that means it's much better than the last iPhone, which again I had.
I've been pretty outspoken about 8k and how useless it is and how chasing resolutions for the sake of higher megapixel counts is pointless, takes up too much space, and ultimately doesn't make the video or image look much better, it just makes it a little more interesting to look at the pixels, but Apple didn't go that route, which honestly surprised me. I thought they were going to use 8k as a big selling point for why the 13 pro camera isn't as good as the 14 pro and me. I'm sure they still have it, you know they can brag about the action mode and they can brag about the Pro Raw format having 48 megapixels on the new 14 and stuff, but I was pleasantly surprised that in the video resolution department Apple still I have kept it in 4k. 60.
On the other hand, while I was also hoping that cinematic mode would support 4k at 60 or pro res so I would get an upgrade there, I thought maybe they would bring 4k pro res to the 128 gig iPhone and in fact they haven't done that yet. Since the iPhone 14s is using this updated main sensor that came from the 13 pro and they are even using the exact same a15 chip that the 13 pro used, I was hoping that prores recording would come to the regular iPhone 14s and it did. And I personally think there is no problem with the hardware.
I don't think there is anything wrong with the iPhone 14's hardware that would prevent it from recording pros. I think it's purely Apple software blocking features that aren't above doing that and sometimes they change their mind in the future, so maybe iOS 17 will bring prores recording to the iPhone 14 or it could bring action mode to the 13 pros and stuff, but I was anticipating at least an 8k video option which I thought wouldn't make sense and I was going to have to argue why I don't think we need that on a phone, especially with how limited screens are and how they can generate 8k, but no apple didn't take the bait on that, they could have.
They went the marketing route and just boasted about higher resolutions, but I feel like they wisely chose the opposite and just decided to say no. You know, one of the main advantages of a 48 megapixel sensor is that we can recover full 2x resolution without having to have a dedicated sensor. lens, I thought it was more efficient, smarter, makes the 3x telephoto lens seem unnecessary, but I'm proud that Apple didn't take the 8k bait like all these other Android phones do, even if the feature isn't as good. thought out and lastly, number five is also a little technical, it's specific to my region, but the price, if you were watching our podcasts and videos leading up to the iPhone 14 launch, I was so convinced that at least the pros would get a Pretty massive price hike and before launch I actually thought the regular 14 would get a price hike too but I was really surprised to find that at least in the US the iPhone 14 didn't get any price hike across the board .
Which blew my mind because even the iPhone SE had a price increase and with the inflation that we are facing now I know that the dollar is not the same value as it used to be a year ago, but the fact that Apple has basically kept the prices . pretty much the same over four years for four generations of iPhone, okay, let alone the inflation that's happened over the last two years, but over the course of four years, you know, Apple first introduced Mac size with the 10 that was 1100 and it was 1000 for the regular 10 and that was in 2018 and here we are in 2022, all these changes have been made.
Apple made all these updates to the screens, the cameras, the chassis and the battery life has improved a lot in the last four years and I. I'm impressed that after all this time, even with improvements to storage and RAM and all that, they've kept the prices the same, the 10s max was the same launch price as the 14 pro max, which I think the 14 pro max is a much better phone. and they could totally justify charging a lot more for that phone if they wanted to consider how much better the battery life is, how much better the camera is, how much better the screen is, and yet they've kept the prices the same after all this time, which Which Many people probably won't notice or appreciate it because we think yes, the new iPhone is expensive, but I know that's not technically true overseas because there were a lot of price increases in other regions outside of the United States, so I I feel.
I guess you could say that my price predictions and my speculations about price increases were accurate outside of the US because in the last two podcasts I was actually predicting that the price increases wouldn't be just a hundred dollars more, I thought. that the pro max would be 150 more and I was feeling more and more confident about that as we got closer to launch, but that's actually pretty close to the price increases that a lot of people saw overseas, so in a way my prediction was accurate, but in the US, I was pleasantly surprised by the prices, I thought they were quite reasonable for the upgrades offered, at least in particular with the professional line with the regular iPhone 14s.
Yes, I still think everyone should go for an iPhone 13 at that point and if you already have an iPhone 13 then yes you don't need to upgrade but let me know if there are other things you thought I was blatantly wrong about the iPhone 14 line in the comments below, anything that pleasantly surprised you or I unpleasantly surprised you with the lineup, all that good stuff, let me know what you're thinking below, this is your apple sheep and I'll see you all in the next one.
