Making Super Effective Sound Absorbing Panels - DIY Acoustic Panels

Apr 10, 2024
welcome back thank you so much for joining me in today's video as you probably heard that this room still has a lot of echo even though in a previous episode we built those nice decorative

panels

for the walls, they work pretty well but there are still too many open flat surfaces. In this room and especially on the ceiling, you will see that there is a low ceiling in a preview of this room and that caused the

sound

to bounce around a lot, so in this video we will build some

panels

that will cover most of the ceiling space and, Hopefully, they will echo. in this room it's much better, okay, so let me show you how we're going to do this.

We're going to build a pretty simple frame consisting of two long and two short pieces and then we'll have a simple support in the middle and then around all of this we're going to wrap some fabric and put some insulating material inside, so let's get started. I have a couple of sheets of MDF there, we'll turn them into strips and then we'll start building a subassembly myself of 270 millimeters, that is. will be the height of the boxes. I've cut my full sheets into slightly more manageable sizes and now it's time to make some more dust and a couple of MDF strips.

This will work for the seats, so make sure you use a mask that probably contains many parts, so two long pieces, two side pieces and one just to give a little more strength in the middle, so now let's talk about the reason why which we are building these boxes with this shape. exact measurements that will fit one of these insulated panels so that this will fit nicely on the inside of this thing, so building in this size means that I don't need to cut any of these panels and I don't need to splice several of these together, which would have had to do if I wanted to build them bigger than this.

You see, when I planned this project, I considered many different shapes and sizes, but at the end of the day, it's all up to you. If I use the full size of that insulation material with the amount of one roof covering, I still need to make 20 of those panels, so doing anything more than this would really take a lot of time and I don't think that will be the case. It will be worth it, so for now let's put this aside and start converting all these pieces into 20 frames. That was all the NDF cutting. I'm done assembling the frames.

I tried a couple different ways to put these pieces together and was done. What I did was use the nail gun to shoot them together first and then drive a screw into each corner like that. I feel like we got a lot of stiffness without a lot of work and once I wrap the fabric around it, everything will stiffen up nicely. Now let's move on to what all these pieces are for. These are all part of the pieces that will allow me to hang them on the ceiling and I want to do it without visible screws, so I will build a system that is friendly.
It's like a French slat system where two parts are joined together in this way, usually used to hang things on a wall and then one piece slides into another. I'm going to do pretty much the same thing but on the ceiling, so I'm going to put one of these on each side of my frame and then this long piece will actually go towards the ceiling and then these two end pieces can fit in from the side of this piece that is mounted to the ceiling, it will make more sense in a second when we are actually going to mount them to the ceiling, but for now we need to place one of these on each side of the frame, that's it, the older frames are basically ready, we're almost ready to wrap some fabric around these, just one last one left.
What we need to do before we start on the fabric is that we have some sharp edges and corners and I'm afraid the fabric will tear once we try to stretch it through there, so I'm going to use a rounded bit. and I went through those corners very quickly, I have this one and the other 19 that are leaning against the wall behind me and then we can finally start on the fabric that was all the work done. I have spread my cloth. which I'm going to stretch around the frames, so now we can start by cutting out a piece of fabric here that we're going to place one of our frames on and using one of these staplers we're just going to stretch the fabric. firmly over here and just staple it starting with the center of the four sides keeping everything stretched out and then we'll slowly move down the sides towards the corners

making

sure to stretch out all the wrinkles now that we've stapled the fabric tight. of the frame on all sides we are left with these floppy corners and we need a way to make this look presentable so we'll start by wrapping the corner over the edge here and then we'll fold the sides in and then after trimming all the excess leftover fabric we already finished with one we only have 19 left that was the last one and for that it took about 2000 staples by hand I'm going home see you tomorrow okay, it's a new day my hands hurt from stapling all these things so much, but finally the time has come to put these boxes on the ceiling but before doing that we need to put the insulating material on these boxes and also hang these things on the ceiling and putting these things on the frame is quite easy.
We didn't even need to cut it since we made it to exactly the same measurement. The only thing I'm going to do is we have this support in the middle and I'm going to cut a little channel. here so it fits more easily into the frame and then it will just slide into place with no problem and that's it a complete

sound

box so those are the first two of my mounting brackets attached to the ceiling now it's time to see if the frames actually lock into place and I really hope it's easy to assemble so I can't believe it's legit.
First try to get the benefit of doing it this way, since the mounting brackets we put them inside the frames here are much wider than this, I can slide them to the sides. so the assembly of these is not very critical because I can tap them and make sure they are aligned after the fact, so this is working very well and also the benefit is that there are no visible screws and the boxes are all the way up almost flush with the ceiling, okay, so let's see if all this work was really worth it, this is what the room sounds like without any of the kilos of sound installed test test how to share subscription test test how to share subscription and now let's see what it sounds like like this with the panels installed and this is how it sounds after installing them try try how to share subscribe try how to share subscribe okay, let's try it again first how to share subscribe and then how to share subscribe how to share subscribe how to share subscribe es' Honestly, I wouldn't have thought that They were going to work so well, it really changes the way the room feels, it's actually a bit strange, but it feels really nice, it feels a lot more comfortable to be in the space right now, surprisingly.
It was actually pretty easy to put them on the roof. I thought I was going to have a little more trouble with the alignment and the way they mount to the roof, but it worked great using those angle pieces on the side where they were. It slid into place very easily and lined up after the fact, it was

super

easy too so in total I built 20 of these and with all the materials included they ended up costing the equivalent of between 13 and 15 dollars a piece which could still be be more. More expensive than those

super

cheap foam panels you can buy, but compared to professional quality products there are at least a quarter of the price.
I'm also very happy I chose to make these white and would consider a couple different colors initially. I even made a gray panel to test, but in my store the panels are actually placed below the light source, so the bottom becomes very dark and any color is darker than white, which made everything the ceiling was much darker, which I think would have made the room look much smaller, so that will be it for this video. Thank you so much for watching this was really a great improvement to this space and something I've been wanting to do for a long time.
Honestly, it made a huge difference. a little bit more than I expected anyway, thank you so much for watching if you liked the video, like it if you don't already, subscribe and I'll see you in the next video where we'll build something else. great bye
