Victor Oladipo SERIOUS Knee Injury - Doctor Explains

Apr 08, 2024
Gorilla Depot appeared to suffer a potentially very

serious

injury

to his left

knee

on this play. In this video we will look at what exactly could have happened here and compare it to Oladipo's previous

injury

to this other

knee

and a few others. examples of what I think might have happened here, welcome everyone. I'm Dr. Brian Suiter and if you're new here and enjoy learning about the underlying anatomy and medical side of the sports world, please consider subscribing to the channel I'm on. a different scenario here we are Mobile on the road, but I want to take a look at what happened tonight with Oladipo unfortunately this seems quite worrying just by looking at the replay, the mechanism, how the old Depot reacted after falling to the ground and what We could see some deformity in the front of his knee.

What I would be most concerned about would be a major patellar tendon injury, less likely a quadriceps tendon injury, and hopefully at best something like a partial patellar tendon strain, but as I watch this play here, what we have to pay attention to is that Olodipo is planting that left knee right here in this position and then he's exploding to push up, so if there was a major injury to the patellar tendon or the quad tendon, I would have been here on this step, as soon as you put the quadriceps tendon in, it will try to shoot up to explode and push you up, but that really high sudden increase in force applied through the quadriceps tendon or patellar tendon can unfortunately sometimes cause an injury. where that tendon can tear badly or rupture completely, whether it's the patellar tendon or the quadriceps tendon, both are considered an equally

serious

injury, but based on what we looked at Ola Depot's knee, he went out and fell.

On the court, what would worry me the most would be the patellar tendon. When Oladipo comes down here, we can see how there's a little bit of flattening on the front of his left knee, so you can see if we zoom in a little bit. It almost looks like his kneecap has been lifted up a little bit, so his knee is very flat here in the front, we see this little bump that will be the tibial tuberosity, but then it looks to me like his kneecap has moved up, to the right. there we can see that little peak of the patella and it seems to me that there is an increase in the separation or the space between the patella and where it should insert through the patellar tendon towards the tibial tuberosity, so just looking at this view, see the mechanism , my number one concern would be a significant injury to the patellar tendon, potentially something as serious as a full or complete rupture, sometimes with these tendon ruptures we can see a bit of recoil when all that energy is released and here are the steps to Oladipo.

On this play, I don't really see in this angle anything particularly concerning where there's a clear and obvious setback of that tendon or kneecap moving up or down, but when we look at this initial view from the front on that first step, it does seem like it. To me, we can see that his knee pad is moving up quite aggressively and that would again fit alongside a significant patellar tendon injury. Looking at our biodigital anatomy tool, here I'm showing the key structures in the front of the knee, of course. the kneecap will be sitting here behind the kneecap 10 and the quadriceps tendon, the quadriceps tendon goes from the thigh muscles, so the quadriceps muscles go down to the kneecap, so it's more on top of the knee joint, from which the patellar tendon then runs. the kneecap to the tibial tuberosity, so if you rupture any of these tendons, you will get a setback where the kneecap will sink downward in the case of a quadriceps tendon rupture or the kneecap may rise upward, which suggests a patella Alta, but we will call you if there has been a rupture of the patellar tendon down again.

The fact that at Ola Depot we could see this increase in separation where it looked like the kneecap was a little higher on the leg would make me more concerned. the patellar tendon was injured unlike when his previous injury in the other knee was the quadriceps tendon. I think it's helpful to look at other examples of some of these injuries in the past and patellar tendon ruptures or tears are pretty rare in the NBA, but of course this was Andre Roberson several years ago and you can see he's a guy. similar mechanism. We're talking about Roberson's left knee and you can see here as he rises for this layup to exploit that leg.
It gives way completely, there is no force that can be transmitted and it falls to the ground. With Roberson we could see a similar flattening, that increase in the space between the tibia down here and the kneecap, which seems to have gone up a little bit higher. Oladipus injury. on his other knee there was a quadriceps 10 disruption that occurred on this play. We can see, of course, that this was the right knee and here again, when he took a step and planted himself on that right knee, the tendon just ruptured, the quadriceps tendon ruptured. I couldn't apply any Force through that leg and it just fell to the ground, so certainly the best case scenario is that this is not a full thickness tear and that it is just a partial tear.
I will tell you that the equipment probably has a tear. You already have a pretty good idea of what's going on because you can just have someone try to straighten their leg, we call it the extensor mechanism. If someone can't straighten their leg, that suggests that something has torn in that connection between the quadriceps and the tibia, if they are able to maintain a straight leg raise, that suggests that there is still some of that tendon intact, so that at best, hopefully there is still some tendon intact, this is just a partial tear, but given what we saw, the main concern would certainly be a high grade injury, the patellar tendon is likely less It's probably the quadriceps tendon.
That's all for the video. Everyone let me know, as always, any questions or comments below and until next time I'll see you later.
