He did it in the unlimited and in the dual and won the

race

Let's go to the side of the track. For the most famous words in motorsports, welcome your grand marshal, Florida Department of Transportation Secretary Jim Boxhold. Drivers, start the engine. 40 engines have roared to life. We prepare for the season opener in 2015. There is the man who won the title last year. Next we visit Chase Elliott from the driver's seat. One of the best venues for all sports, Daytona International Speedway will host the season opener of the Nascar Xfinity Series. Now we move from the driver's seat, from one champion to another, and Kevin goes to chat with Chase Elliott.
Chase Elliott, this is Kevin Harvick in the fox booth. We have a couple of quick questions for you. I want to know, what is your strategy when you qualified? Just to try to be smart in some way. We want to try to move forward and be aware of it. I think we have to run. Try not to do anything too drastic. Try to be smart with our movements. Chase, it's Michael here with Kevin. It's interesting that you came to town a year ago, 18-year-old kid, no one knew what to expect. You came to win this championship.
Is there more pressure on you to repeat this year or to prove to everyone, to prove that you knew what you were doing? I don't think there's any more pressure on us to try to do it again. You have to see it as a new season. Just to be smart and realize that last year is last year. This is a new season. Thanks to the fans for voting us as the most popular driver. It means a lot. You look good in napa colors. We'll be up here following them. Have fun. Thanks guys. We have paid Dale Earnhardt, the junior starts last.
Kyle Busch started outside the top 30. The bottom line is that qualifying was wild today. You have to pack 12 cars to try to qualify for the

race

. Three wide in the trioval. That doesn't work well when you have rookies. We haven't taken the first turn yet. That's the story about this. We will line up the first time when we take the green flag with 40 cars. These guys are going to practice in cool conditions and now they will come in hot conditions. It could be wild. Hot conditions. This is as hot as it can get. Check it out.
Four wide to the checkered flag. Regan Smith is able to win the race by a nose. I hope you see the same today. Side by side running towards the checkered flag. When you come to a place like Daytona, it's the season opener, these drivers, most of them haven't been behind the wheel of a car since we left Homestead in November. Today, what's the balance between patience and aggression as you try to be where you need to be on the final lap? I think most of them haven't practiced much. I think that's how things have become at super circuits.
Don't wreck your car. As we go through the race, you will have 40 cars and most of the participants will not have practiced much. Some experienced guys in the back. Kevin touched on a key point. The cars practiced in cool conditions. The handling disappears when the temperature rises and there is sun on the track. They will run tight in the pack. They will be next to each other. The cars will be a handful. We have 40 hungry drivers. Two of them in the booth who have combined for three Daytona 500 victories. We will have fun today. We're glad you're with us on FOX SPORTS 1. back live.
Good to have you with us on Fox Sports 1. We open 2015 for the Nascar Xfinity Series. The cars have gone off the grid. The crews are making their final preparations. Today we talk about classification. In the poll for the 11th time in his career, Austin Dillon, running 20 races this season. A limited schedule for justin marks. Row two, boat chad who had anxiety next to brendan gaughan. Welcome to the pit reporters. Good afternoon, Matt. Qualifying was exciting and put austin dillon on the pole for the second time in his xfinity career. A big advantage of winning the poll is lane choice.
He will move from the inside to the outside because his teammate Brendan Gaughan is in the second row. They will try to form a team. Orders to your observer keep me close to the front. You're never safe anywhere, but the chances are higher that you'll be in a safer position up front. Remember, he hasn't won an xfinity competition in almost two and a half years. Matt, one of the joys of the xfinity series is grooming young talent. In joe gibbs' number 20 car competing today is 18 year old erik jones. He is considered a can't-miss prospect in this garage.
He ran three xfinity races last year and placed in the top three in all three. Last night he finished second in the truck series. He says the key is to stay out of trouble. At the end of the race I feel like we can win. He wasn't bragging. He's that good. Chase Elliott is coming off a dream season. He win the championship and three victories. That's not enough for him. He told me this morning that he wants to get better. Daytona is on that list. In both Daytona races last year he finished outside the top ten, something he didn't do very often.
He said he took notes. He has a new plan. That plan, of course, involves his new crew chief above the box. Adam? Thank you. This is a big year for ernie cope. This is the first time in several years that he has been a crew chief for a championship-seeking team. He has been one of those stellar crew chiefs. I love the way we are starting the race today. We begin a new era with the xfinity series. J.J. Yeley, justin marks, we haven't mentioned kyle busch and brad keselowski, a couple of guys that we know will be running to the front.
So many unanswered questions and great stories. Those two drivers combined for 12 wins a year ago. When you mix the talent and have young people come in with enthusiasm, they may do something they shouldn't. But it's exciting to see. You'll find out, sitting here and watching people do things they shouldn't do is a lot more fun than when you're on the track and they're doing it. A title. I'm glad I don't have to pay those bills. You've been right there. Yes. It will definitely be an expensive qualifying session. Dress up our toyota camry safety car. Leading the 40

nascar

xfinity cars around the 2 1/2 mile tri-oval.
The offseason is over. In 2015, put it in the air and let's get to work at Daytona. You saw Brendan Gaughan dive to the bottom of the track. That will give our polesitter, austin dillon, a chance to do the same. Two team cars will line up in front. As you can see, Austin is moving back and forth, at this point he is trying to manipulate both lanes to stay ahead. You've got these guys that come from the back of the pack. They are pushing and pushing and really this is the time when you can make up the most ground from the back to carry the momentum.
We saw Kyle Busch in practice do moves that were incredible. We know he will do it in the race. He has three bands trying to force their way to the front. Nine out of ten, the aggressor will be the winner. Sometimes it doesn't work. The guy who is conservative wins. We are three wide. The guy leading that on the outside, Ty Dillon, who's been making his way through the field in our first few laps. Absolutely. When that top line is formed like this, it will have more momentum than the bottom line. Now those guys are coming so fast you can't block.
How busy is Austin trying to police two lanes besides his and block them all and maintain the lead? It's hard. It's very difficult. Because you're trying to go 300 or 300 kilometers per hour. The next thing you know, you're looking back more than forward. They go for it right after the bat. I spent some time in Los Angeles. Last fall. I ran down the 405. We were three wide. They're not playing. This is three wide across the entire field. This is the type of racing that fans love to watch. I'm so glad these guys are running so hard after the bat.
Wow. I said ty dillon was on the move. He climbs 25 positions in the first two laps of the race. Dale Earnhardt Jr. started last. He is in the top 20 from the beginning. How does he do it? He finds a gap, a line. He works his way from back to front. From last place to top 15. I think the kid leading this race is a kid who's probably a little underrated. Last year he had a great season and reached the front. He gained a lot of experience. He will be a force to be reckoned with. These cars drive as well as they will all day.
The track is fresh, green. There is also a lot of grip on the tires at the moment. These guys are capable of doing these moves. As the cars start to move away, the tires get slippery, the temperature goes up, that's going to be more and more difficult. As you can see, if he goes back to the lead car and looks at the front of the grid, he's got stuff on the front of the grid. That's very Daytona. When you start racing, you get junk on the grid. He's got a lot of junk on the grill. If he gets to where he is, that wrapper will get him into big trouble.
I'M SURE HE LOVES M&Ms BUT NOT RIGHT NOW. Try to explain how: They have a very small opening in the front to get the temperature to where they need it. Nascar really wants us to not push and get that draft. So the limited grill space we have can be open. That grill is small and they made it as small as possible without the engine blowing up and you not being able to push. Austin Dillon, who led the first few laps, is fifth on the inside lane. His brother a couple of places in front of him.
DIDN'T YOU START IN '33? Deep in the -- up to 24 positions. What a move for him. I think now you're seeing guys who want to run hard from the start. You are seeing that the backpack begins to form as we advance in the first part of the race. I haven't talked about the man who won this race a year ago, Reagan Smith started 12th today. He is in second position. Also in that main mix, I talked about chris buescher. Ryan Reed also on the main mix. This is a great place for those kids to shine. They have a lot of experience acquired last year.
They know that when they get to super speed racing, this is their most realistic opportunity to win races and make something happen and really shine. In the end, we all know this is the biggest race of the year for the xfinity series as it is for the Daytona 500. You talked about Chris Buescher and the fact that he's the real deal. He went from failing to qualify at Daytona here a year ago to leading the race now. He came second inTalladega. He realizes it quickly. Absolutely. A couple of old friends working together. Bubba wallace drives for jack roush and gets a push from kyle busch.
You can see Kyle going back and forth with Bubba. That was close. When you go through that tri-oval, it's not the place to push and push. You can see the curvature of the bumpers. It has about a six-inch window that you can push in a straight line. In these cars you have more sponge than in cup cars. That window of opportunity to push correctly is very, very small. And much less in that trioval. Look who's behind Busch, it's Daniel Suarez. At 23 years old, his third career start, he is making his way through the field at Daytona.
That is amazing. We talk about Bradkeselowski. He made his way there too. Daniel suárez needs to prove something today. He made a mistake in classification. He caused an accident. If he can get through this race cleanly, people will look at him differently when he leaves. He will not be remembered for that accident. He will be remembered for his performance during the race. Last Saturday, he finished second, top ten last night in the camping world truck series. Here he is running for a championship in his rookie campaign in the xfinity series. So far, so good. The Mexico native is eighth.
The beginning couldn't have been much better. He has had it all. It was exciting, that's for sure. We are only seven laps away from the 120 that make up today's event. It's today's Florida Alert 300. He lives in Daytona Beach, Florida. The season opener of the

nascar

xfinity series. there. There's a guy out there who's making his own path to glory. Making a name for yourself in a sport where your name and maybe a number are what define you. Somewhere in that group is a driver who can bully the bully. A driver with a movement that will allow you to move forward on the grass.
In one of those cars is a driver who could talk better than Jaws. A guy who can take the king 7 and turn it into an 8. Damn. Maybe even 9. Maybe they're at the back of the pack. Maybe they are stalking the leader down the stretch. Waiting to jump. Hoping to take that first step towards becoming a legend. Make no mistake about it. They are out there. I guarantee it. Welcome to the Nascar Xfinity Series. Ten laps. HE STARTED 34th. The man who finished fifth in the championship a year ago has worked his way up to the lead.
Ty Dillon making the outside lane work. That's the first lap he led here. That has to feel good. That was a few moments ago. He slid into the inside lane. That means buescher is behind him. Look at this from the outside. Kyle busch has really been pushing bubba wallace. You saw the contact in the trioval. They are pushing for leadership. You can really see how these cars love the tandem project. They have to do everything they can; It's almost hard to distance yourself when you're in certain situations where you see all these cars on the outside line stacked up.
It's hard for Kyle to separate himself from the guy's bumper. It's almost a magnet when you get attached to it. It seems that Kyle is nervous and hits him. That's the rule, you can't stay glued to the car in front of you. He's doing an amazing job of maintaining contact without being totally locked down. I wish I could explain to you how stressful it is to sit in this car, and when you add a rule like that where you can't just lean on the guy's bumper and you have to get out and get back in. and getting back out, that's harder than anything else, because you have to sit there and make sure you're not glued to the guy's bumper.
It is very difficult. He is doing a great job. This is a textbook rule followed by Kyle Busch. He is able to push Bubba to the front, as Kevin said, what he is doing is a difficult job. He had Bubba on his side a couple of times. I'm sure bubba enjoys leading the race. I'm not so sure how much he enjoyed getting the lead role. Many young children love speed racing. They love pushing and shoving. If you don't like being pushed and shoved, you probably won't have much success in these types of careers. How good is Jack Roush feeling today?
He has three young children, Bubba Wallace is up for rookie of the year and just moved to the front. All the children did a good job today. Also ryan reed and of course we talked about chris buescher before. You've had a lot of success here at Daytona. You already know how key communication is. I heard this from Team 54 and Team 6 a few moments ago. On the straight, go inside. I think - tight at your door. Kb says on the straight, follow him around the corner. I think what you're hoping to do is run him in the corner and then leave him in the straightaway.
Play and see what kind of momentum you can create. I think when you look to see what they're trying to do, they're trying to stop the inside lane. As you go up the hill and out of the corner, you can run down the hill and allow Kyle to immediately push you back to where the side current doesn't slow the momentum on the outside. he's doing it now. Bubba broke away from the inside line. Look run. Kyle is pretty good. Maybe Bubba following his instructions is a good idea. That's a Toyota pushing a ford. At this point, you're trying to get to the front no matter how you get there.
I think the thing about these two is that they know each other very well since the days of trucks. Although they may be from different manufacturers, Darrell trusts Kyle to push it. They have worked a lot together. Don't forget this about Kyle Busch. He started outside the top 30. Right now he is third. Kyle Busch is one of those drivers who has his eye on those around him. You heard him talk about what he wanted from bubba. He has a rookie and teammate behind him in Daniel Suárez. He has to monitor his temperature. His team leader told him a moment ago that he should pay attention to the temperatures.
If you have to run out and get air into the car, do it. There's a lot to keep an eye on for Kyle Busch's 54 right now. it makes me nervous when you catch a slower car in the corner and have to turn three times. That difference in speed, having to adjust the line, is a recipe for disaster. The field did a great job breaking through. You fear where you catch those guys. You can see when he gets close to the tri-oval or the corner and that starts to happen and guys come in and out, it takes the slightest touch.
We start next to each other. We stayed like that during that leading group. There are several other drivers who have backed off. Chase Elliott, Dale Earnhardt, junior, waiting for the right time to race here at Daytona. Right now ty dillon is up there. Our journey towards 500 continues. The post-race edition of fox sports live is coming up after the live. A lot to cover. The NFL combines. Our nfl experts are there. We will have the details. We'll have the latest on Kurt Busch's suspension. Now we go back to daytona. First, some business messages. Quiet traffic today open Speedway Boulevard here in Daytona Beach, Florida.
You go to Daytona International Speedway and everything is totally different. They continue to run two wide and ten deep here at Daytona International Speedway. The world center of racing, home to the season opener of the nascar xfinity series. Right now, it's Ty Dillon and the inside lane up front with another young gun, junior Darrell Wallace, making his debut for the Roushenway organization. You can see Ty Dillon had to make his way down the track. He leads the field over the lap car. Kevin points out that there are three or four slower cars ahead. When they catch that group is when the intensity increases. he makes us very nervous as drivers.
Where he, standing here, was stressed about it. I know everyone at home is probably wondering: why are you talking about cars back? Any time the lanes start moving and weaving like that, it gets treacherous quickly. That leading pack is next to each other. That's intense. Back to the second group, you can see Elliott Sadler coming to the start/finish line there. Those guys are single. In the second group that is single file, when you look at the score monitor, those guys can catch up to the group in three or four laps when they line up. They're playing it safe back there.
You have a couple of cars back in the middle of those two groups. That single back row, as long as the lead group stays side by side, they can catch them. Ked previously about how stressful it is behind the wheel. It's always good to receive friendly advice. Listen to ty dillon radio. How is everything going? He takes a breath. Warm your fingers. Try to move forward as best we can with the advantage. Outside corner. It's good to remember to stay on top of your game. Ty has done an incredible job running from the back to the front.
He hasn't driven here until today. When you hear that advice, it's very good advice. That's what happens a lot in these races: people get lazy. They don't pay attention to what is happening. You think you are in a safe place. If you are in the pack, you will never be in a safe place. Something can happen at any moment. Look at the push. You're right. The lines move. Things change. The handling disappears. You have to stay on top of that wheel. We mentioned - d suárez. That scared me. A moment of anxiety. Suárez right now is third in line on the outside lane.
What a day. He speaks of a moment of anxiety. Caught in the ranking disaster. They had three hours to prepare his backup car and get it as close as possible to the primary. They did a great job. He's telling his team that he's a little tense. He started from the back. He now he's after his teammate. I think when you look at it, when we talk about the 18 car, if it stays between Kyle Busch and Brad Keselowski, he's going to have a good day. He wouldn't try to pass. He wouldn't try to move me. Here we pass through more turning traffic.
Exactly. It's a great place for that young man, personally after the problems he had during qualifying. Record laps. Do your work. Stay on top of the wheel and finish your game. Don't give Brad even the slightest bit of a hole to dive into. You know he will. Not a clue. You are in a good place. As a rookie, this is a race where if you have a fast car like Daniel's, you can put yourself in a position to take advantage of a good day. Earn the trust of many guys around you. You saw the leaders go through the return traffic.
The speed difference, more than ten miles per hour. Talk about who you talk to and why you get anxious when you see them approaching in slower vehicles. Change the dynamic of that draft. See the cars grouped closer to the front of the field. When you pass other cars, it slows you down. It gives the guys behind me a chance to stop. Things change when you encounter traffic on the turns. Another thing that usually happens is that the inside of the car gets a little drafty. That internal line will recover. The accordion will start. That's when you start to shuffle things and gain or lose positions.
It's not surprising to see these two together. Yeah. As this group develops up front and these guys continue to compete, I'm the guy that... I've been on both sides of the strategy. While they run all day in front, if they can stay together. They know where to leave their cars. They have the experience they need. I like the strategy of the front of the group. We're approaching the quarter point in today's 300-mile race at Daytona. It is the season opener of the Nascar xfinity series. Ty dillon out front at daytona. Those two in front change every lap.
Ty Dillon is pushed forward and Kyle gives Bubba a shove. I tell you, this is our sport. Everyone realizes that if you're going to win, you're most likely going to have to be at the front of the pack. It seems like everyone is more aggressive in this race than last year, because they want to try to position themselves throughout the day to stay ahead. Big push on the outside lane for junior Darrell Wallace, who led 12 laps here today. 32 laps at daytona. Let's go Fox Sports 1 style and get it going. The sights and sounds of Daytona International Speedway.
A special thanks to our team behind the scenes who do incredible work during our Budweiser Speed Week coverage. Here we are, 33 laps. We're bringing in our crew chief, Larry McReynolds. It won't be long before they reach the pits. A couple of things I want to point out. I personally went so far on green, I would use four tires. You have to wait for fuel. This would make it one or two more stops. If some of the crew chiefs are thinking only about right-side tires, the last thing drivers want to do is slide their tires when they come to the pits.
The other thing for all the drivers in the race who are not competing in the sprint cup, this will be the first time they and their teams will have to deal with the new pit office system where Nascar actually monitors different pit rules. until crossing the wall too soon or crossing too many pits entering or leaving. I think when you look at what's getting ready to happen here, you're ready to pit under the green andYou see that the second group catches the first because they don't want to lose it. They immediately want to be as close to the lead group as they start coming into the pits so they don't miss the draft and lose what they think is a safe distance.
They are trying to position themselves to enter the pits. For me, this is the most stressful part. Everyone tries to start orchestrating pit stops. It's counting down. We think they will stop at about lap 39. They had pace laps before the race. We will stop early at the beginning. What I love about Nascar is that in the top six we have two Fords, two Chevys and two Toyotas. Just behind the top six, seventh-place rider Brad Keselowski. An interesting conversation strategy. Come round 41 with the 6. 54 should be round 40. This could be resolved in several ways. If you have the majority of the pack, pit first.
If you get a majority out of the pits, they will take off. There is a lot of strategy that comes into play when you enter the pits. Bubba left Kyle Busch hanging. When we return, we will stop in the pits with a green flag. You're watching nascar on fox sports 1. Four tires for jones. Back live. The first round of green flag pit stops is underway. In the cycle of drivers who went down on lap 38, last year's winner Regan Smith is among them. Justin marks and also erik jones's 20 getting serviced. Everyone is getting nervous. They don't want to run out of gas.
Here comes another group of them. You see smoking tires. There are guys who have a lot of speed there. Daniel suárez, one of those who come to the pits. He was almost on his side. What a mess at the pit entrance. Like Brian Scott. He slid his tires to the pit lane. He has a flat right front. Hope

full

y they'll put four tires on that car. Let's go with Vince. Kyle Busch says the only reason the outside line has been moving is because he's been doing all the work. They helped him keep his balance. A four tire change for kyle busch.
So far so good for 54. Daniel Suárez missed his hole. I would be surprised if this car could return to the pits without a flat tire. Watch him smoke these tires. And he just gasped. That's why you have to practice to get to the pits. When a game moment like this comes, it becomes a really intense situation. Brendaughan coming down now. We have seen drivers making pit stops under green. Also in bubba wallace, the same for ty dillon who today has 15 circuits in front. Ty Dillon said his car was very good. The temperatures are also good.
They wanted to add tape to get the highest speed possible. At the front, the pole winner, his brother Austin Dillon, adjusts the chassis trying to improve the balance of his car. Four tires for the 33. When those drivers come out of the pits, Matt, most of the front drivers have now received their green service. Here is Daniel Suárez with a late return. Good news for him, he managed to make a complete turn after spinning those tires. The team was ready to service four tires here. This is only his third race in the xfinity series. It's a lot to take in.
It's what you have for him. He almost stops him at the exit. Difficult day for daniel suárez, the rookie from mexico, who today makes his third start in the xfinity series here. He crashed earlier in qualifying. I went to backup. He made his way into the top five. Then there was a problem when entering the pits. Now he lost a lot of position on the track. Now that things have changed, we get back to the point. Ty dillon has the advantage in the race. You're hearing penalties on trailer pit road. Nascar's new pit lane surveillance.
We're hearing that 51 of clements will receive a penalty as will 01 of landon cassill. A tire escaped from that time. If that's all we get from that action - I was about to jump out the window when I saw the 18 and all the mess happening in front of us. I think now you see the group that is separated, how they got back on the track, you have experience at the front and inexperience at the back on how to get to the pits. Speaking of experience, here come the 54 and 88 on the move. A couple of cup veterans looking for the point in Daytona.
Dale junior stood behind kyle busch. I think these guys knew it, I think they did it smartly. They got aggressive right before the pit stop. They made their pit stop. Next thing you know, they're in the lead group with the experienced guys they want to be with. There are the inexperienced guys who didn't do a great job coming onto pit road for the first time, and who got separated in the back half of the field. That was an interesting pit stop. Dale junior went to the pits in 21st place. He comes out fighting for the lead and runs in second place.
Not only a great pit stop by his team, but also getting to the speed line and getting back on the track obviously surpassed Dale Junior's accomplishments. I think as you see at the front of this group, Kyle and Dale and a lot of these guys, they've raced two or three times throughout the weekend. Two, I think. How we spent the weekend. You've been on pit road, you've been through practices. I still practice getting in and out of pit road every week, because it's so hard to do. We promised you from the top that today's race would be entertaining.
How about this? Dale Earnhardt Junior rises 30 spots. 27 for kyle busch. Ty Dillon rises 24 positions. You're on board with a man who won the championship last year, Chase Elliott is 12th in the running order. He's still a big part of the equation here at Daytona. Today's coverage provided by Goodyear, everything they learn to make tires for Nascar's demands inspires what applies to yours. for the nascar xfinity series. That group of six running around in the background, having a good time right now. Enjoying a little walk on Saturday afternoon.
When they look in the mirror, there are 20 cars that run a couple tenths of a second a lap faster than them. They are getting ready to have company. If those guys could stay single file and calm down for a minute, they would be back at the front of that group. It's surprising how much everything slows down when you're next to each other like that. We saw them pass Daniel Suárez. Daniel had problems getting to the pits. He gives it a spin down. It's the first car one lap back. A yellow flag would put him back on the lead lap.
He sat on her lap. Daniel had a great squad after a mistake in classification. He now he needs to recover from another mistake. he's lucky he made a mistake and it's still working. He can keep running and gaining experience and doing the things he needs to do and try to finish this race even if he makes a mistake. An early mistake on pit road that you can overcome. He has a chance to overcome that. Absolutely. Still, have a good day. You get the feeling here, because the opportunity for multiple warnings in a short period of time, the fact that that can eliminate so many competitors if you had the big one, you're never really out of it.
You have to get really deep into the race before you feel like you're out of contention at a place like Daytona. Brad Keselowski is in twentieth position. What do they say in the middle stages of the race? I almost had too good a pit stop. We work together. He makes it a point to get ahead and catch up. That's really back to what we were talking about. If these guys were patient for seven or eight laps, they would be part of this group again. That second group runs harder than the first. They are next to each other and moving from side to side.
That's what brad was talking about. Form a single file and put everything back together before we start hurting each other. Teammates working together here. Maybe working against each other. Bouncing off each other. Bubba wallace and erik jones decided to exchange a little point. That's right. That's not the best plan here halfway, before the halfway point of the race. I think that had a lot to do with the 13. They were going to pass him around. I don't think the 6 of them knew he was coming. The 20th turned sharply later than he had anticipated. Bubba wallace at 6. Jack roush's 4.
Erik jones, the young sensation competing for the championship in the camping world truck series and who was runner-up here last night. In July, we did 53 laps before we got our first yellow flag. 51 and today we have no caution so far here in Daytona.
Earn unlimited cash back on purchases. That's a victory. But imagine winning it twice. Introducing the Citi® Double Cash Card. It allows you to earn cash back twice, once when you shop and once when you pay.
It's cash back. Then return the money again. And that's a win-win cashback. The Citi Double Cash card. The only card that lets you earn cash back twice on every purchase: 1% when you buy AND 1% when you pay. With two ways to win, many other cards seem one-sided. Back live at Daytona. Our tax killer at the top of the board. Kyle busch is leading. A long way to go to reach the 1,700+ he led in 2014. Dale junior is second. He won six times here in the xfinity series. The car from the team that won here a year ago, Regan Smith, is third, with Larson and Buescher rounding out the top five.
We're 55 laps away, five laps from the halfway point here at Daytona. Let's get a report from pit road. Chase Elliott just sighed to the left on the stop. I thought it was interesting. I asked his crew chief, what was his mentality when turning only to the left? We ran rebound in the front of the shocks. I have done it before. We take four tires and the tire comes out very slow. I didn't want to take the risk. I decided the right thing to do was to have two tires. The tires have not worn out. That was my thought process.
I would like to thank xfinity and welcome you on board. Kevin Harvick, this man was his crew chief. What do you think of the call? That has been his strategy on the slopes for a long time. As a team leader, you move with things you know. You try to do things that worked for you in the past. Last year he worked with Kasey Kahne and in the past he worked with Tony Stewart and Ernie working together. They've done a lot of these sprints. Remember the six I talked about earlier? Ue the music of Jaws. That's done.
The guys who caught them will figure out how to get past them. We will see dice towards the front. I talked a lot about Bubba Wallace today. He sees him at 6 behind Ty Dillon in the orange and black No. 3. Kyle Busch has pushed it all day. Maybe he wants to try to push himself. He looks like he hit Ty Dillon's 3 sideways. We'll see. It's coming. Above. Do you think Ty had enough of that? I think he was trying to get down and get behind his brother. It was just bad timing, which is what creates a lot of these disasters.
What are they saying? That's what they told him on the radio. Billy was telling him that they were trying to get to the bottom because the bottom lane seemed to be moving much better. At that moment, when the hole opened, he said to get to the bottom. It was an almost perfect moment. He is having a hard time keeping the car in the draft. That was a cool move right there. You saw austin dillon, he saw his brother outside. They jumped in there and almost got ruined by Bubba Wallace. Brendan Gaughan stopped and pushed them forward.
That's synchronized running. Looks like they've been trying to line up the rcr cars. Bubba Wallace is now starting to regress and is in danger of losing the back of the pack. Sometimes you need a break. You end up being sidelined or someone sidelined and you're in a bad situation. You get stuck in the middle or outside and something goes wrong. I have to go back and catch my breath. Then I'll do it again. Maybe that's what happened. Bubba did a good job. He was in the position he needed. He was simply overtaken by those three teammates and pushed back.
Bubba is recovering. He will stay behind brad keselowski. That's a blue oval. He says that's friendly territory. I'm going to push a little. Cross the start/finish line, Kyle Busch will have led the most laps here at Daytona today. 19 circuits ahead for the man who won seven times a year ago. That tells you how manychanges occur during the course of one of these xfinity races here at Daytona. You can start anywhere and win. I love the roof camera on top of car 6. You can see how these cars dance. He's trying to figure out how he's going to climb back up among the group.
He was in front all day. You have to figure out how to push and push your way back up. Why don't you show us what kind of announcer you are and put a circle around that car 6? Wait. There he is right there. How about that? It's hard when they're on the move. That's right. You did a good job. Let's get a report on bubba wallace. When Bubba moved back several positions, you summed it up best. Maybe there wasn't something wrong. He was going back to regroup. I spoke with the team. They said that was the case.
I didn't communicate on the radio at all. He returned, settled down and moved forward. A year ago he finished in the top ten. He's comfortable on these tracks, as comfortable as you can be. Sometimes you have to catch your brother yourself. Sometimes it's easy to move forward from behind because you can carry the momentum and make better decisions. We come from behind and look up. That gives you a chance to evaluate your car and what kind of moves you can make. If you run in the first two or four like he has, you don't know what you have if you have to make a move.
She sees that he has a car with which he can get around. The classification was not clean. But that was the race. How about 65 laps to start under green? There are still no warnings today. You saw our longest green flag race there a year ago, 29 laps. We couldn't run two and a half minutes in qualifying without destroying it. These guys are running side by side. This is a great action. They are preparing to catch a group of slower cars. An opportunity for them to be wrong. So far, very good driving. Come on. You know it's a time bomb.
As the lap counter goes from 67 to 68 to 69, the intensity increases. It's a tough race right now. Everyone seems to be somewhat organized. As we get to the end, everyone will want to start pushing and pushing harder. On board with aric almirola. These cars move a lot. That's really the hardest part of trying to recruit someone: just driving straight. Especially through the trioval. Upon entering, the car begins to light up. You move. The cars dance from one side to the other. On the verge of loss of control. It's definitely hard to drive them in a straight line since you're in a group and things are moving.
They seem to drive better in curves. When you are in the corners, you have more grip than on the straight. Bouncing inside you. Absolutely. Whether that thing is loaded into the corner and the car is suppressed on the track, you have lean to lean on. As long as someone stays from the center to the right of your bumper, it's fine. They are light on the straight. Especially in the trioval. Kyle busch the leader of the race with the black 54, in the outside lane. He has the rest of the top five behind him as they work out of the slower traffic here.
Approaching 70 full laps in today's event. A year ago, we had five cautions here at Daytona in this race. Four of the five come after lap 70. Tomorrow on Fox, the great American race. The Nascar Sprint Cup Series season opener at noon ET is when our coverage begins. One of the drivers who will compete here tomorrow, regan smith replacing kurt busch who has been suspended indefinitely by nascar. Driver 7 in the xfinity series. He is in front. Kyle Busch, who was leading, moved back to fifth place. Dale junior was second. But he was now left behind because he had to make an unscheduled pit stop.
When they made their stop, two tires came off and they didn't fill the car with gasoline. They had to come back to change four tires and put gas in them, which was early. We are receiving reports that when he left pit road he went through more than three pits. That's against the rule. You may have a loose wheel. They will check that too. He went straight through the well. I think when I look up, I see three boxes in front of him. I don't know if the last position is something they use as a box. There are only three pit stalls in front of it.
Maybe we can get clarification on that. Let's listen to the team radio. Let's see if we can get information here. Yes. I have a loose wheel. I don't know how bad it is. he was back on pit road. They didn't address that. I think to serve your sentence in your self-service, you can't stop. If you have a loose wheel, you will have to re-enter and stop in the pits. You've been covering it. What are they saying? he says picking up speed, a wheel loose. He believes that he will be able to hold out until the next stop.
Something else that happens here, when you start to stop on green and enter and exit pit road, the brake rotors start to vibrate. Let's clarify how to get out of the hole. The rule is that you cannot pass through more than three pit stalls. There is one, there are two, there is the third. It would be a room, but there are no cars there. There's no one in it. Interesting. Even with that, he was very close- close it is- but it seems that maybe-according to Nascar- the system is black and white. He tells you if you missed it or not.
He passed through the fourth box. He didn't know if there wasn't a car there, that counted. I'm learning for tomorrow. Make sure I understand it. Learn, that's for sure. The reason there wouldn't be any cars there is in the nascar xfinity series, only 40 cars competing. What Nascar does sometimes is tighten the pit lane, making that number one spot not an option for the teams competing this afternoon. Where it would be used tomorrow with 43 cars in the race. Look at that pack coming up behind the leaders. Those guys are on top of each other. This race is kind of... it's been kind of a sneak.
Right now, that second pack is where all the intense battles are. To clarify another thing about the pit spot, when Nascar takes away the first pit spot, they took it away so that the car that qualifies first has to go a little longer distance to even out the fairness on pit road for the speed line. How about this? There are no precautions here today. 46 races at daytona for the nascar xfinity series, we have never been without warnings. Now we have 44 laps left. That leading group on the left of your screen, nine cars there. Then a large rush of air behind them.
Larry? Yes. What... we are approaching what will be the second green flag pit stop. I feel like teams should need to get to 80 laps. There are 40 left. But you have to think about this. The last three xfinity series races here have been green, white and checkered. This is a good time to get four tires. It's a four-fold change. A chassis adjustment to help with your balance. It has been too free. Wallace, the rookie, led 18 laps in this race. He has retreated. Trying to help him with the race car in the final stretch. I think, seeing all these pit stops starting to happen, they don't have a good fuel reading.
In the first run of the race, you have your pace laps, warm-up on pit road. You entered the pits a little early. You have a better reading than you had. You don't have a real one yet. There is a chance that some guys will run out of gas, especially those who put on two tires. I don't know how much fuel you put in. There are many variables that the team leader has to analyze. If you run out of gas, there will be an accident. You can not avoid it. You have to be on the conservative side.
You can see Regan Smith waving his hand at the cars behind him. He will come to the pits on this lap. He will come out of turn four all the way. Let's see if this can be completed and everyone enters the pits without any damage. I had some problems but no big accidents. Well executed. The first time a circle of stops around lap 40. The stops start again. As Regan walks away, his teammate chases after Elliott. You will work together on the draft. Let's cover stop 9. Remember that at the last stop they only took a left. This time it will be the right sides.
They will fill it with fuel. Regan Smith is also present. He just took the right side at the first stop. This time it is a four-time stop. Regan Smith pitted from the lead. A strong car for him today, this youth competition vehicle was the winner a year ago. A couple of seemingly routine pit stops. Caution is out. First time today. I think it's because of the tire down here. Tire rolled away. I got into the grass of the painting. With that, with 40 laps left, we now have a yellow flag. Great opportunity for Chase Elliott and Regan Smith.
They will stay on the lead lap and make their pit stops. They will be the leaders. When this is all said and done, it will work out very well for Chase and Regan, because they will lead. Dale junior, he will recover a lap to try to get back into this race. I know if he'll get a lap back. He is not our lucky dog. Elliott and Regan will still be on the track. He will have to run for the lucky dog. Bubba wallace will get a free pass. He went down under green. That could be important to him.
Look at chris cochran's 13. His tire leaks. See his skills. See how this thing works. Watch Chase Elliott as soon as you miss it. You'll see the tire right here. It's going to happen up to here. That's right. We'll clean it up so you can watch it finish its path onto the lawn. Would you like to draw something? I'll let the experts handle that. I'll let you - I like that. I think Dale Junior, since he had to stop early, will probably take the wave. I don't think he can because - that's right. Regan smith and Chase Elliott will be the leaders if they stay on track.
You're right. They will be behind him. Interesting things. That's why sometimes we have to take extra precautions to fix all of this when this kind of thing happens. The pit lane here is closed. That's why everyone stayed outside. That gives us the opportunity to step aside. Under yellow flag for the first time at Daytona. . Under caution for several drivers who have spent time in front. Kyle busch, erik jones, kyle larson. Among those coming down the pit lane, we saw Erik Jones slide into his pit lane. Let's go back and take a look. Trying to get everything you can.
He arrived hot. He wanted to make the pit stop quicker. We talked about how difficult it is to make moves. He tried to buy extra time there. He ended up costing her. He came to the pits in third place. He will probably fall outside the top ten. Nascar has set up its new pit office without a system. Eight officials in tow. The tire leaks. The camera will capture that movement. Red flag to stop. A nascar official will return, review the stop and determine if it was a penalty. You can see those lines there. The green line around the hole is what the Nascar people are following.
The officials in the trailer. It seems like they enjoy doing it too. he waves. You're in nascar on fox. There are 38 laps left until the start of the xfinity season. Back live at Daytona International Speedway. Closing out the final stages of the season opener here in the world center of racing. Good to have you with us on Fox Sports 1 with Michael Waltrip and the man who won the 500 in 2007, Kevin Harvick. I'm adam alexander. We've had good things today. 20 leader changes, eight drivers at the front. Dale junior driving through the countryside. It will be a fun ending. 20 leader changes.
Eight drivers lead the race. The two guys who made the pit stop before the yellow flag have track position. How crazy is that? You're in Daytona, you can select. They are excited to get track position. We still have 35 laps left. It is very difficult to win these races. You know it. It doesn't matter what series it's in. When you have a little luck on your side, you say, yes. I'm very excited that everything went the way we wanted today. You take it and try to make it productive and produce a result that you want to achieve.
You said it during the break, luck is better than good. We have a box here, to give you an idea of the difference crews can make. They are trying everything possible to get some advantage. You saw young Erik Jones slide through this box. That caused him to lose position on the track. The other three guys have different strategies. Kyle busch got four tires as did kyle larson. Two tires on ty dillon. He leaves the box first and gains position on the track. Erik jones had problems. HE WENT FROM THIRD TO 11TH. For Bubba Wallace, who came down pit road, he passed too many pit stalls to get out.
See the red x? I can not do this. He needed to be outside the white line before he got there. Those are the old habits that die hard. That's important, you need to take the cut to the right and leave the city. Absolutely. Green flag in the air. There are 35 laps to go at Daytona. There are 35 laps left at Daytona and we are celebrating track position. Wow, it's a different world. These guys have to fight hard to get to the front. Kyle Larson lost theposition on the track there in a cycle of stops. On board with Chase Elliott.
You see Chris Buescher giving him as many pushes as he thinks he can get away with. You have once again led the group from below. They are very well formed. I can tell you that it gets more intense every time we get closer to the end of the race. The pushing and shoving becomes increasingly stronger. It becomes more difficult to pass. The key to stalling someone and slowing their momentum is lateral drafting. When you rock and sink, that's when contact happens. That's when accidents happen. What's up defending champion? They have luck on his side. The fuel situation is good until the end.
His crew chief just told him right now that, out of caution, they are good for two green and white checkered finishes, in case we need it. You can see Ryan Reed stopping there and doing a side turn in Chase Lliott's #9 car. Regan Smith returns to a familiar spot, up front. Of course, I won this race last year. Second here in July. I only put four tires on the last stop, after two on the first stop. They were going to go with two tires only at this last stop. She passed and skidded the tires too much. They had to change to four tires.
We'll see if it's worth it. That's what's so difficult and what makes it challenging for the crew chiefs is that, as a shocked driver, if you slide for the stall or block them coming into pit road, stopping under green like they did them, now, suddenly, your strategy has changed. change. You have to go with four. The only thing they all had in common is that they had to fill the car with fuel. If you don't fill the car with fuel and you know that's the length of the last ride, then you're in trouble. Late-career adversity by Kyle Larson. he arrived at the pits in first position.
It was four tires no matter what, knowing it would be his last pit stop. They passed four tires and a tool through the window. A problem with his mirror. He might try to squeeze it, because he couldn't see through the mirror because it vibrated so much. you have had tools delivered to you. Multitask behind the wheel. I can tell you this, I worked on the shifter and put clamps on. But I never tried to work on my mirror. That's the difference between... that's a generational gap. My mirror vibrated, if I complained they told me, okay, you're out of luck today.
You raised your hand and held onto it to try to stop it from vibrating. How about that? A great example of what it takes to stay ahead. Those three cars collided with each other until they reached the lead. It's crazy that we're sitting here with 30 laps to go thinking we have to maintain track position to win. That is the case. It's going to be difficult, Kevin, to make your way through the pack. Yes. You just don't want to be the weak link. What I mean by this is that you don't want that space in front of you.
If you have a space in front of the car, you are the one holding up your line. When you see those first three cars in the middle lined up and you have everyone lined up, your line will move faster. The better you can form your line, the better your line will go. You don't want to be the weak link. What about Daniel Suárez with Kyle Larson forming another line? They are progressing. The third furrow reached the middle of the group. Ryan Reed doing a good job, driving for Roush. Writing help for keselowski. The roush-fenway organization, penske, has never won an xfinity race here.
They can run wide twice and not crash. They are three wide. A disaster is brewing. I can promise you. How can they avoid the big one when they're advancing on the outside with a rookie leading the pack? J.J. Yeley, he's in the mix. Leading the group that comes through the middle. Suárez and Larson in the outside lane. It's a big dance right now. As to how hard you can push and how far you can push. Did you see Larson pushing Daniel forward? You have a cane in front. That's what I love about Daytona. I told you before the broadcast started, it's the underdog I'm rooting for today.
I love the races themselves. You can see all these guys leading a race that might never lead another race at any other track this year against Kyle Busch and Brad Keselowski. Give it to Kyle Larson. He finds a way to get to the front. He won the 24 Hours of Daytona a month ago. He has raced to the front in the cup and pushed a rookie to the front. Considering Suarez is out of the lane in the orange car, he's TWO LAPS DOWN IN 30. He's right up there with the draft leader. Now I'm trying to help bring Kyle Larson to the forefront.
You never know who your friends are. You will take them anywhere you can get them. IF HE RACES 30TH, HE WILL BE your friend. The 6 had a great moment in the final stretch right there. That's trying to line up and push and push. You can feel the intensity of this race increasing. Everyone knows how important it is to be in front. Look at this. This is a great move down the frontstretch. He is against the car in front of him. He makes a movement inwards. I don't think he wanted to make that move. We have to take note.
On lap 91, three open outsiders pushed for the lead. I did not see him coming. I didn't know that high side could do that move. I think that's just due to the aggressive nature of how hard you want to push. The more cars you can find, the faster the line will go. Before today: big problem. That's rookie suárez on top of regan smith. The big one in daytona at the trioval. 42 converted us. Stop, daniel. Scotgasse, window closed. Up and more for regan smith. You're not going anywhere. Do something about it? Sorry, guys. Regan Smith had put herself in a great position.
But today she is not going to repeat. Ryan Sieg takes his car to the garage. Justin Marks also stopped on the grass. Good to see, Regan Smith after rolling over on the frontstretch here getting out of his car. Kyle Busch was pushing the rookie, giving him a push here. Kyle Larson...excuse me. It seems to put him in a bad place right there. He just fell behind in his direction. he came too far to the right. Coming out of the corner, that car unloads as you come off the bank. He took too much. That's the window you have to push.
If you come out from the center of the rear bumper the way these, the front and rear bumpers are curved, the car will spin. Remember how we see luck versus good? There's Chase Elliott. Right behind you. Chase is lucky. His car keeps rolling. He had damage. Look at this work that 33 Austin Dillon does. When the 18 turns around the 7, holy shit, Chris Buescher did a great job sneaking in there. Great buescher work all day. Those are some great photos. We have the best cameramen and women in all sports. The images that they capture from so far away and that are never lost.
Look at this... look at the black car, the third one in the back outside. He will see this collapse unfold. Regan Smith turns around. She misses him. Wow. I don't think there was any contact between 33 and 16. Kevin, we hear all the time, you have one under you, but that's not what they mean. They don't mean you're actually underneath. That is sure. Usually, that means inside you. Not literally sitting on your roof. We have damage to the right rear. That shouldn't hurt him. They tape him up and he can go again. There are 27 laps left until the end of Daytona.
Second warning of the day. Not for a tire to leak. It's because of a big drop in the front stretch. Our second yellow flag of the day with 27 laps to go has turned into a red flag. Now we know what happened to Austin Dillon and how he got that damage to his right rear. Incredible job avoiding the accident. They come to slow down to stop for the red flag. You can see the yellow car right there at the back of the screen. Austin pulls over to stop. Not the yellow car. That's Mike Wallace at 26. Hit Dillon. he hit the car behind 42 a little there with his, on the left side door.
Our second warning of the day became two warnings in one. Austin goes through the entire accident, doesn't hit anything, stops on red and has the back of the car ripped off. More than ten cars were involved in this accident on lap 93. It began when Daniel Suárez went sideways upon reaching the trioval after contact with Kyle Larson's 42. Listen to what they say about the 42. The 18 kept moving. He tried to go up. He climbed too high. We started to turn it around. Press 7 and turn it around. You can see they're in turn two. You did. Here the track becomes flat.
It was more than that rookie could handle: maybe anyone can handle a guy shoving him there and spinning him around. As you come out of banking, banking disappears very quickly. The car becomes light, even when you are alone. When you're that far to the right and the car comes out of the turn to unload, there are a lot of things that lined up to make that car come loose and cause an accident. Look at the work Larson does. He has a car crashing in front of him. His hands never move. He has no options. He holds it steady and avoids the crash.
Let's call on the safety of these vehicles and the hard work that Nascar continually does to make sure that when everyone gets behind the wheel that they're okay when things like this happen, because Regan Smith, who went up and overturned and was hit. By several drivers she got out of that number 7 Chevrolet and walked away. It's always good to see. We're in the red here in Daytona. It's ryan reed in front. Brad keselowski, erik jones, kyle lars yeley top five. green Clearing the track behind us. More from Daytona. We are anticipating the great American race. A little over 20 years ago, a man with a mullet and mustache changed from Nascar.
A look at Jeff Gordon's career. Welcome back to Daytona International Speedway. What started out as a quiet afternoon here, we are now experiencing red flag conditions after the big one. Joined here by Larry McReynolds. You get the feeling we're not done with the precautions yet. No. Not remotely. We ran 80 laps without caution. I could almost promise you that if you look at the history here, we've had green and white checkers in the last three races here in the series. If you're just joining us, we'll get you up to speed. First xfinity race of the season at daytona.
Austin dillon in the survey. LITTLE BROTHER TY STARTED ON THE 30TH. Moving forward. Kyle busch, darrell wallace juniorfriendly, a good push. First race for junior darrell wallace in car 6 with roush-fenway racing. Suárez in car 18 has problems in the pits. He locks the brakes. He misses his box, almost stopping when he entered his box. Lesson learned there. On lap 42, kyle busch takes the lead for the first time. Looking for his first series win at daytona with joe gibbs racing. When regan smith took the lead on lap 69, there were 51 laps remaining. Unscheduled pit stop occurs for junior Dale Earnhardt, penalized for passing too many pit stalls.
He dove through four. Nascar says the rule is three. Of course, you knew it was coming, the... what you're going to see, Kyle Larson, he was colliding with Daniel Suarez in car 18. They did it coming out of turn four of the straightaway. Suárez gets into the outside wall and cuts. Regan Smith does a full rollover. Fortunately, he came out in very good shape. Regan Smith won this race a year ago. Unfortunately, a tough disaster for him. So, larry, what happens down the stretch? The red flag goes out. Mike wallace in the yellow car 26, I don't know what he was doing.
He runs over Austin Dillon in the 33rd. Austin Dillon, he had to go through the wreckage on the frontstretch. Big damage for that big one. A total of 11 cars were collected. Daniel suárez collecting regan smith. 11 cars. That's a lot. Yes. Especially considering we ran 80 laps without caution. I promise you, the total won't be 11 when the race is over. Right now, nascar says there are 27 laps left. Ryan Reed is at the helm. That's a great thing. This is an opportunity, when you race at Daytona, it doesn't matter if it's the xfinity series or the sprint cup series, sometimes we get that big surprise.
Someone we haven't talked about the entire race. Very busy at the stand. Let's send it up. There are 27 laps left under the red flag. He has been risky. For a driver here under red, what is his mindset? How do you prepare? You know it's going to be intense. Like larry said, there will be more action. What I love was that Chase Elliott and Regan Smith, when they came into action on the track, they thought their day was over. They suffered an accident. Some guy sliding down his hole ruined it. Erik Jones moves up to third place.
There are comings and goings. We are eliminating some of the first runners who arrived at today's race. He is preparing for what Kevin wanted, an underdog to get the checkered flag. You never know what's going to happen. I promise you, like Larry said, it probably won't be the last warning because the pushing and shoving will continue. Isn't it much more fun here watching all this? I can't believe how much fun I had today. This has been great. Do you remember when the laps went off? 80 caution free and this was a record race in terms of speed.
Maybe not so much. What did the man say? Tick tock, it's going to get worse. We will continue after a break. Our coverage continues tonight with the beach party. Nascar drivers welcome fans to a pre-race party to celebrate the 2015 season on the sands of Daytona Beach. Tomorrow will be the 57th edition of the great American race. Our coverage on Fox begins at noon ET. At 10:30, a special edition of "race day" right here on Fox Sports 1. Beautiful Saturday afternoon in central Florida. Let's hear from a guy who led laps today and won this race a year ago, but he's out, regan smith.
Regan Smith, his wife is home and will have her first child any day now. The first time he flipped a car. I'm glad to see you're okay. I'm fine. Hopefully we don't send Megan into labor. That was not my intention. We had a fast car. Doing everything she wanted him to do. On the restart, we got in front of the pursuers and we couldn't go as well as I did with other guys. I couldn't get the pushes and shoves at the right time that I needed. He stepped back a little there. The inside line began to return.
I saw the 18 smashing and smashing again and smashing a third time. There was nowhere I could go. I'm as low as I can go. I saved him, I saved him, here I am in trouble. Unfortunate. I don't know if he got help from behind or something like that. I know I was two laps down. In that situation, you're not really going to go up and get a lucky dog or anything like that. It would have been great to be behind the pack and maybe let us stay there and race like we were doing. We will see.
I'll talk to him and see what the deal was. We will go to Atlanta and fight hard there. We had a fast car. We will have fast cars there. A hole to dig out of. It was a solid career until then. Tomorrow you will be in the Daytona 500 replacing kurt busch. Do you take anything away from this race that might help you for tomorrow? You only have one practice in that car. Keep all four tires on the ground. It's funny, our safety stuff and the way we've come from a safety standpoint, we're fortunate. We've minimized the impact to drivers.
That's good. Tomorrow we will try to preserve the four or the ground. It is a car capable of winning like today's car was capable of winning. We will work hard tomorrow. See where it takes us at the end of the day. I'm glad to see Regan Smith still has a sense of humor. He's fine. It's good to see he's okay. It was a tough hit here on the frontstretch. Now maybe we can call his teammate. Chase Elliott, are you okay to chat? Go ahead. Well, how hard was the blow? How bad is the car? Can you hold on there?
Honestly, I really don't know. It wasn't that hard of a blow. But it was quite difficult to break it quite well. I don't know what's wrong. It's hard for me to see from here. Hopefully we won't have any problems with the radiator. That's the first thing that would be a good sign. If it's body stuff, we can try to put the nose back together and we'll see. A big break in the pits before the yellow flag comes out. You have your position on the court. It didn't seem like you and Regan could be strong on the front.
Was that your opinion? Yes, definitely. I do not know why. I felt like I was trying to push him as hard as I could without getting in trouble for being a couple. I probably could have been more aggressive. Those outside guys had a good run with us. I'm not sure why that was. However, he ended up backing out and getting us into trouble. See what we can do to fix it. I know those guys in Napa have a big toolbox. We'll see. We'll take it around and see what's wrong with it. Hang in there. Thank you.
That's the Chase Elliott situation. You can see the damage here on the right front of the Chevrolet Napa. We have that part of the story. He was involved in the incident that caused the red flag. Austin dillon involved in accident after red was thrown at him, matt. The benefits of having a brother. You can clearly see in the shot that Ty Dillon in the 3 has a great view of the damage on the back of his brother Austin's 33. In fact, he was telling the spotter about it, giving her a great description of all the areas they will need to fix and suggestions of what they will need in terms of bonding to the carrier and how much aluminum.
When he finished, the radio went silent. Then richard childress, his grandfather said: i can't believe mike wallace hit you in the back. Then Ty said: You have the wrong brother. Let's call the right brother. Ask Austin Dillon. It's Michael and Kevin in the cabin. We're watching you get hit on the back immediately. He made a big deal of the incredible job he did avoiding the collision at the front immediately. I went there, he stood in the back and got beat up. I know you probably have no idea. What happened and how serious is it? That was crazy.
I saw a turn in front of me. He came down pit road clean. I was going to reach 42 because we work well together. Let's see if I can tell you something. I was sitting there and looked at myself in the mirror. We went five feet in the air and 100 feet down the road. It was a nice sight if one of these guys had a camera in the car. As you were coming down the backstretch to take the red, did you see the red flag? Was there still yellow? The lights were still off. He had seen everyone else stop well before.
He was ready to stop. The yellow lights were off. I will say that. The caution lights were... from what we can see here, the front bumper is still in good shape. Most of its rear bumper is fine. If that puppy is driving down the street, you're in pretty good shape. Thank you for letting us talk to you. I hope we can fix it. I am having fun. It is a good moment. You can see what Austin was talking about is the yellow caution lights that were flashing when he stopped and was hit. Look, tence. Look how long they've been detained.
They are stopping. Someone told him to stop or he wouldn't have done it. The world stopped in front of Mike. He couldn't stop her. That's one of those situations where you know he's drawing the red. Maybe slow down a little. That was a pretty abrupt stop. There seems to be a bit of miscommunication back there. Back to Matt. That's what Kyle Larson was telling his spotter and his team as they headed down the stretch. He felt that the 16 stopped too quickly and everyone had to check and hit the brakes. This possibly caused a chain reaction for the cars behind.
Let's listen to what Mike Wallace said on the radio. Evidently, there was a miscommunication there. We'll see. Stop here. Did you hear us? He comes to us. I don't think he hears anything. Find out what happens to him on the radio. That clears up part of the story. It's definitely a bad time for the radio not to work. Who knows how long the radio hasn't worked. You rely a lot on the spotters as you race around these racetracks to tell you what's going on. As the race progresses, the spotter talks more than anyone else on the radio.
Observers are a big problem. If you can't hear, it's a big, big problem. Kyle Busch is currently ranked 18th. What kind of problems are you having as a result of this? They were not directly involved in the accident. They were the ones who would suffer something for it. The crew chief, what happened to Kyle? He had backed away. Moved back. Good intuition from the driver who kept us safe from the accident. In a big way. When it opens, we'll put the tires on and be ready to go. We went from 32nd to sixth in the first five or six laps.
A long time, 27 laps. We can get this Energy Camry monitor in victory lane of the xfinity series. Kyle won more than anyone in the history of the series. Don't rule it out. he The red flag has been raised. The cars are rolling. We'll step aside and have more updates when we continue live from Daytona on Fox Sports 1. The 2015 Nascar season is here. He plays the car racing game Fox Fantasy. It's always easy to play on your PC or mobile phone. Choose your team of five drivers and challenge your friends for weekly and seasonal prizes. Chase elliott has arrived in his pit. There is quite a bit of damage to the front. Rick hendrick showed up. He is watching over the crew. Ernie cope is watching. They didn't know if they should return it to the garage. To Matt. Five crew members working on the right side. Big Mike Sears, he had all saws. They are trying to cut the sheet metal. They are trying to clean up the back right corner as best they can. I know we've shown you multiple angles of the accident that caused the warning and then the red light. Now we are back under caution.
This is really cute. This is Kevin showing off. He has adopted this. He has learned to put elegant arrows, the direction of cars. That puts Suárez on the side and it's just that it's really the storm of purposes of two things that happen. Kyle Larson pushes too far to the right and the bench falls and it's bad news for Suarez. Really, you can't blame Suárez. He just drove the car as straight as he could. Don't blame Kyle. They are pushing and pushing. As I say, that tolerance is six inches wide on the front and rear bumpers.
When it gets out of alignment and you find yourself in a situation like that where the bench falls over, things happen. I'm afraid damage is part of Chase's problems. There could be damage to the suspension. There was a lot of contact with the right front tire when he hit the other car of the four that was there. If he had to do this again, he would ask if his steering wheel is straight. No tire rubbing. Raise the divider off the ground and make sure the hood does not lift. Everything you learn about building tires for the grueling demands of Nascar inspires what you learn.
Goodyear the official tire of nascar. Kevin, why don't you ask him if his wheel is straight? It would be good information. Maybe we'll learn something. I think we let Mike do it. What the hell? Chase, it's michael waltrip again. I was wondering, did you drop your trailer? Is the orange tape supposed to be facing left or facing up? Keep them straight. I think that was the crew. I think they are working there. I think you see all this damage right here. I think you see the bearer bonus on the front of the nose. It has to be on the ground.
They're back. Ernie cope asked that exact question when you asked it. He said it's direct. Everything's fine. He turned it off. They will work on the front. Tape it just right so it doesn't fall off. They are not sure if all the suspension components are okay. He has turned it off. Many times you turn off the engine so it doesn't overheat. They'll sit there and work until the last second to where they think they can get off pit road and pass the safety car to the end of the line there when they come off pit road.
They will take advantage of every second they can. You see them putting a piece of nose on the front right to try to make it as good as possible. Look at the contact. Shipwreck behind you. A big accident behind you. Attention on pit road. Evidently, Chase has done something that Nascar didn't like. Because...apparently, he didn't care to stop when the red flag came out. It will start from the back once we are green again. That nose is not going to work. Air will come in under that. Chase's problems are going to continue. That's really like I said earlier damage control at this point.
He wants to make sure nothing goes flying, nothing scrapes the ground – scrub the tires. Nothing will fall to the ground. Unfortunately, they will have to go back and put the front straight or the nose piece will be the next warning. 2014 very good for youth motor sports. He won nine times, including here a season ago when Regan Smith took the checkered flag. He is out. Our defending champion driving for Dale Junior, Chase Elliott is having trouble. He's not the only one. Landon cassill sitting idle on the grass. I'm not sure why. I have no idea how you could get there.
He's in turn two almost at the end of the backstretch. I mean, it seems like something is wrong with the steering. We saw it last night at the truck race. A couple of pieces broke. There's something wrong with the steering of that car. They have given us the signal to go. The caution lights have come back on. Break for Chase Elliott. I don't think it's the maximum pace: you can see the gap between the yellows and the blacks. The air will rip it off immediately. We have to stick that nose to the nose. They will have to tape it or get another piece that matches the divider.
That piece is going to fly away. Today the season begins, the fun continues for the nascar xfinity series. Next weekend when we go to Atlanta, the season is just beginning. You know it's going to be entertaining on that old warning surface. For the young superstars ofnascar, we are on the air on saturday at 1:30 p.m. ET on Fox Sports 1. Streaming live on Fox Sports Go. Missing one. Let's try this again. Landon cassill's car is behind on the backstretch. Maybe they can connect it before the field contacts it. A few more laps under caution, which will help everyone who was worried about fuel consumption problems.
Not just beyond the programmed distance. We thought everyone was fine there. Certainly, if we had green and white chips, and based on what we've seen, that's likely to happen here this afternoon. Restoring our top ten. When we turn green, there will be 22 laps to go. Fox Sports Supports is driven to team up with Boys and Girls Clubs of America who support its mission of helping youth reach their full potential through programs that promote character and leadership, education, a healthy lifestyle and further. For more information, visit foxsportssports.Com. As a car owner, that's when you get angry.
You spend hundreds of thousands of dollars to make this car right. There will be tape flying on the front of this package when the race is over. Aerodynamics and everything is important until it's time to push and push. Even if your car is totaled, as long as the tires are there, a few dents here and there, you're in the race. We talked about how difficult it is to pass. Kyle Busch is out of the top ten. We know how aggressive he is. We know that he knows thousands of holes in the competition and fights to get to the front.
It will be fun to see. The lights came back on in our safety car. We will wait again. I want to draw your attention to our score monitor. In 16th position, one lap down, dale earhardt, junior. The most important thing is that it is the first car in that category. If we receive another warning, Junior will get a free pass on the lead lap. That's all we need for a little drama at the end of the '88 race. The other thing that's really exciting is that you have Ryan Reed leading the race. Chris buescher, erik jones, j.j.
Yeley: I'm excited for those guys. Like Ross Chastain and Dakoda Armstrong, chances to fight to the front. There goes the tape we were looking for to steal the new thing. I don't think that will hold up. Me neither. Erik Jones third right now. Day of ups and downs for the young man. He is where he needs to be right now. I think it's part of the maturation process for any young driver over the course of a race, particularly one of this nature, being up front, fighting your way up, had a problem on pit road. He told me before the race, I just want to run all the laps and be in position at the end.
As I mentioned, I believed I could win. I believe I can win this race, saying it with humility. That is the confidence that he and his team have in him. This season he will run 17 races. He is a driver who, as we said before, is a prospect not to be missed. That's the reputation he has in the garage area. It's a shame he only runs 17 races. That kid can win anywhere, whether it's on a super track or a short track. He's like Chase Elliott. He is special. They don't appear that often. We saw Chase Elliott do things we haven't seen in a long time.
Having the same thing with Erik Jones, the most he did on the last lap to have a chance to win last night was fun. He now he is in a position to win xfinity. I wouldn't be surprised if he took the checkered flag here today. It wouldn't surprise me in the least. Lots of great stories in the top ten. There are 21 laps left before we return to green. Reed, Keselowski, Jones, Larson, Buescher. Some of the names may not be familiar to you. But you will become very familiar with them, because the nascar xfinity series is where future nascar stars are born.
One of those young men could put his name on the winning trophy today here in Daytona. Green flag flying once again at the world center of racing. 40 minutes ago we were in green condition here in Daytona. My heart hasn't slowed down. I'm anticipating what's to come. There are too many cars to have another major crash. These guys will become more and more aggressive as the laps decrease. Ryan Reed led the race, he was fourth here in July. He is no stranger to leading the group. That young man. Just the laps he led before today, 29 at Talladega last spring.
He likes plate racing. All those kids inside, they're all really brave. They haven't been in many circumstances where they've done things wrong. They don't... they don't have much to think about. They know they have a chance to win the biggest race of the year in the xfinity series. What a smart move, Chris Buescher drove ahead of Keselowski. He stood right in front of Brad. That will propel you to leadership. He missed the race a year ago in his rookie season due to rain during qualifying, so he was in the show and in line for a win.
He would be the second of his career. How about the roush cars in front? How many wins do you think they have here? It's zero. That is incredible. I'm not playing your game. As many races in the Roush organization have won in this series, it's amazing that they haven't won a race here. Are you sure this is the first time you're doing this? he's been reading notes. He might have a little help cheating. What a battle. There you see the running order of the Roush-fenway drivers. Sometimes it's about positioning yourself against a guy who you feel is the better pusher.
Brad Keselowski is a great pusher. He wants to win the race. Sometimes there is nowhere to go. Chris is in a great place. Obviously, Eric Jones is beyond his years in the way he runs. He puts Ryan Reed in a great spot. It's interesting to see how this plays out. Trust the guy behind you to give you the push. Don't turn around. Not staying locked up with you. If nascar considers you are being pushed, if your cars are locked together, not only does the guy pushing get a black flag, but the guy doing the pushing gets a black flag.
It takes a lot of trust. Debris flying there. Huge piece of rubble. Outside Chase Elliott's car. We knew that wasn't going to work. Too much turbulence. He is at the back of the pack. Cars travel at almost 200 miles per hour. He will tear off the tape and also the nose. We see that disappearing. Caution is flying due to debris. We call that one. Third warning of the day. Hard rest for the persecution that did not endure. He receives the warning. I can go down and work on it. Our defending champion inside the top 15. The first car a lap back, Ross Chastain will get the bye, putting 16 cars on the lead lap with 18 to go.
Chastain was able to beat Dale Junior for that free pass. Nice drive up there by Ross Chastain. I knew Dale Junior didn't get the bye because we didn't hear the roar of the crowd. Watch the team at Napa Auto Part turn up their noses. They put half. Maybe a whole section of nose there, they could get it to stay. It could be better: everything is attached. Maybe it would be better to seal the fender and remove any dent bulges and hope you come out with all wheels spinning. You're on the lead lap. He takes all you can carry.
Right now, the fender has a big gap. That dent in the nose isn't so bad. They sealed the divider. Maybe it would be better to leave it that way and seal the fender. If there was a hiccup on his resume a year ago, which was a dream season, a rookie campaign, a rookie of the year and taking home the championship, it was this team's performance when it came to racing with restrictive plates. Three races on the calendar. Every time out of the top ten. Very uncharacteristic of this group. That goes in cycles. I tell everyone they have a 50/50 chance when they come to Daytona.
Right now it's in the middle. It has damage. His car is rolling. Do what you have to do. Don't make it worse. There were no steering or suspension problems. He was able to hold on to the herd. You just have to do body work. What's new? Ernie Cope appreciates our coverage and gets a perfect view. He said that was our right front fender. We'll seal the hood. Plus, Chase is telling them right now that he's really hot. 245 in water, 265 in oil. After they cover him up, they think he will go down to the temperature department. They need to seal it.
Put another one on top. The front is... it has to be sealed. They continue to work on our defending champion Chase Elliott's machine. There are less than 15 laps to go at Daytona when the green flag waves once again. It's good to have you with us late on a Saturday afternoon. We talked before. Who are the favorites? You'd love to see an underdog in victory lane. Now we get to work. What do we anticipate for these last 15 laps? Buescher and Reed were able to race to the front and maintain the lead. Kyle Busch, I talked about him starting outside the top ten.
I'm watching Kevin's story about an underdog winning. I know Reed and Buescher have the talent to make it interesting and see what Keselowski can do. We saw the third line move forward with Kyle Larson earlier. Will that groove work until the end? It will be interesting to see. As you see that two lines are formed, it will be more difficult for the third furrow to advance. It's hard to make up ground when the bottom two rows are side by side, bumper to bumper. It's a lot of pushing and shoving. I thought today was a no-brainer. You have to stay low, protect the yellow line to win this.
We have seen on several occasions that the outside line runs. It is possible that someone could pass by outside. You think track position is a no-brainer. There is no way you can have a black and white plan. You just have to be prepared to adapt. You have to be fluid with your movements. You may have to dodge around a teammate to block a line of downward momentum. There's no way you can have a plan. You have to adapt at every turn. There are a lot of hungry guys who have never won a race before and who want to win this race.
This is the most important race you can win all year. For the guys in front, what's the balance? How much time did you spend looking out the windshield compared to the back? More backwards than forwards. It's about playing defense. You want to be on offense, but you have to play defense more than you can be on offense because there are a lot of guys pushing and shoving you behind you. We are beginning a new era. This is the xfinity series. We are in daydaytona. They are thinking about getting a trophy at Daytona. It is the best trophy you can have in the xfinity series.
There are many hungry runners trying it. Less than one lap before we go green again here at Daytona. As a reminder, college basketball is back on Fox Sports 1. Monday night is all about the Big East. We are just over a week into March. Things are getting serious. Monday, xavier on the road. Then on Tuesday, a big doubleheader in the East. Watch the action on Fox Sports. Front row at the restart, keselowski, buescher, larson, reed, yeley. Elliott Sadler proved to have a strong car from the start. Can he get hooked? See if they can move forward. We saw the damage to austin dillon.
HE RECOVERED TO 13TH. The one thing all the drivers in the top ten have in common. None of them have ever experienced victory here on day tona. We are ecological again. I don't see that 54 car back there at the bottom in 11th for a long time. He is in a difficult situation. As we talked about before, you get stuck at the bottom during restarts. That top lane is fixed to you. You can't make any moves. They are pushing and pushing hard. There will be a lot of things moving. Who will be the brave one who takes the first step?
You saw up there in the main draft, Austin Dillon took the red flag damage. He is a late player. That's exactly what we were talking about. Nenders. He overcomes many things. A little help from Ryan Reed. Keselowski led that lap. There are 13 left until the end of Daytona. Dale junior with a look at the third rail. There you see Brendan Gaughan trying to whip there. I think they can really do something. We saw it at the beginning of the race. If you get a strong car like Dale Junior on the third row, we could achieve something.
Dale junior is fighting for the lucky dog. He has to do everything possible to get back. I try to be the first car a lap back. Unfortunately, I crashed in turn four. Daniel suarez took kyle larson and they charged forward in the third lane. With 16 cars on the lead lap, if we had a caution there would be 17, yet anyone can find their way onto the lead lap with about ten laps to go. Here they come. Look at bubba wallace, he decided to give it a chance up there. The first four in single file. I haven't heard from ty dillon in a while.
She's dating brian scott. Scott goes back to the low side. So fast,We were talking about Kyle Busch in 11th. How about running in the top five here with just over ten laps to go? 23 leader changes today. We had 23 total in the two xfinity races here in 2014. It's been a good day. See the bottom lane has the number of cars at the moment. They literally have more cars that are closer together and form a faster line. You've got Brad out there leading the way. You have a second guy, Ryan Reed, who wants to do everything he can to be a good dance partner.
Those guys above are starting to form. Kyle Larson has proven to be a fast car. Able to push. If you can hold on to it, you may be able to reach your destination. You can see keselowski changing lanes. Up to the height side. . You threw the block. Those guys had enough momentum to make a decision about what I was going to do. Which lane he was in. Sometimes the momentum is so fast that you have to pay attention. Here comes the third rhythm. Aric almirola making this happen. How about ty dillon? The only victory in his career, Indianapolis.
We're getting tight. That's Kyle Larson forcing the issue. he drove up to the front once. He's pushing up again. That's pretty normal for him. If there's dust on the side of the wall, that's Kyle Larson's beat. Don't get too nervous about it. I didn't know it worked at Daytona. Obviously yes. Elliott Sadler in the group, behind Aric Almirola. Larson found another rhythm and made it work. He screwed into the top slot. He dove inside ty dillon. Get help from chris buescher. Dillon is getting a push from aric almirola on the high side. The two cars in front are leaving and the guys have a chance too.
Erik jones around. Back to the other side of the field. The big one, second part in Daytona. They can't do this. Stay tall. Did someone hit you? Horrible crash for Kyle Busch as he slid across the grass and crashed head-on into the wall. He's getting out of that car. That is an incredible view. Wow. he hit that wall head on. He didn't even slow down. There's samantha. She probably doesn't know he's getting out of the car. That's a great sign. You saw her say thank you and maybe one of our cameramen sharing the news with her.
Wow. Fast car all day. Chase elliott, our defending series champion. That's where it all started. I don't know how it started. We saw 20 Erik Jones cars turn around first. Ryan Scott in the top ten, part of the mix. He received damage. Erik Jones crossed the start/finish line third. I caught a glimpse of Kyle sliding across the grass. You see Kyle being treated by medical officials. He is

alert

. Obviously speaking. That's a great sign. It has to be an incredibly helpless feeling as a driver when you're sliding across the grass like that and you know there's not much you can do.
Well, for us, we've been lucky as competitors to see this sport evolve safely. When you hit one of those concrete walls and you've been hitting these safer barriers, you have no idea what a difference it feels. When you hit them head-on, it's a violent impact. Once again about what happened. Kyle is behind Jones. I like it as if there had been contact there. There you see Kyle, at the top of your screen. Now we'll move on from our blimp view. There you see kyle and erik jones running together. There was contact there. Kyle runs into Larson.
He turns it to the left. Elliott Sadler hit Brendan Gaughan there. You saw the impact. We join bubba wallace. Check, check carefully. Down down down. Keep working. We are in this. We are in this. Chase Elliott is already banged up from a previous accident. A front row seat too. A big disaster behind you. A big accident behind you. A big accident behind you. Caution, caution, caution. We're ok. We're ok. I think it seemed like she thought he had cleared it up. From the side -- go low. Low. Going down. They are going down. One going down.
High back. High. The trail is clear. Keep coming. The trail is clear. Conley's 14 tried to avoid the collision. When he turned left, he struck Elliott. Keep coming. Keep coming. You are clear. He backs away. What's up with that? Never lifted. Never let up on the accelerator. He and Ty Dillon go through it. Great job by Aric Almirola. You can see them both on the wall. They were able to escape. Just like Austin Dillon. What a great move to miss the clash. Lost in all of this, you watched as Dale Junior relaxed and suffered no harm. It's the first car one lap back.
He will get the free pass and return to the lead lap. There will be a handful of cars on the lead lap when we turn green again. That whole disaster started only because the cars are light on the tri-oval. Kyle was pushing car 20, doing what he was trying to do to move forward. You see car 20 loosen up a little bit. Kyle was still there, on his bumper. When he started to swerve, that car just shot at him and he lost control. You said it several times today, both of you. Explain when the car is light. That car is light right there as Kyle pushes it.
