ABOUT LAST NIGHT #588 - Shawn Kemp

Mar 26, 2024
time just to get here and then you realize that once you got here you have to start over, holy, you have to start over from the bottom floor, so it's like, man, it's like really frustrating man, like that which is uh and also um, I'll explain this to you, this is the reason why those guys go to those top college programs because they get great jobs, you realize, yeah, you realize, all of a sudden you're like, hey, now I see why this guy in North Carolina is number four, yeah, and I'm at number 12. Yeah, yeah, that's the difference, so you gotta climb that ladder, did you have another kind of look in the mirror ?
about last night 588 shawn kemp
You know, bigger sizes. Like yeah, yeah, I mean, I didn't just look at myself in the mirror, man, then once practice starts, you look at yourself and I'm talking to yourself, where you're like, "Oh my God," you're like I should. having stayed in school, this is more difficult. than I thought, you know, it's natural to have those, absolutely, oh man, right, and I can only imagine for some of these other guys that went from high school to the pros what they had to go through myself, I doubted myself for a long time. quite a while later, you know, and people say how long did you doubt yourself, I said for at least two days, I did it, it took me like two days and then after two days it was like you know what, man, Like I, I have to, I have to really come in here and leave this, leave this and then it's part of your manhood, man, you realize it says hey, well I'm playing with these guys that are 30 35 these guys are making me laugh Like you know I've been stitched every day.

More Interesting Facts About,

about last night 588 shawn kemp...

I have been depressed. I have had two days of practice, which is four practices. They have sewn me up. Four practices is like look I gotta get some toughness when you go from high school to pro there's something inside of you that tells you that you can't give up no matter what it is like it's the worst case scenario you can just . Don't give up because when you come back you can't go back to college, you gave up your eligibility, of course you can go back and go to school, but you're trying to do something with yourself so you have to do something that is as available to make yourself better and that's basically going to the gym every day, all day, so, you know, I end up going to the gym all morning, all day, all

night

, I end up putting a damn bed or a couch, or you know, in the facility in the facility in the gym just to keep working on my game, the coaches and staff had to go to them and say, "Hey, I'm 14 on the depth chart, I'm trying to get on track." higher, can you put together a program for me or is it all up to you?
about last night 588 shawn kemp
It's all up to me and I don't really want to tell them anything because I don't want them to know that I have those weaknesses and those thoughts. so I gotta shut up in your house, talk and let my house do the talking and it's just hard work man it's just a routine and uh I didn't realize my job had just started when I got to the NBA that I had to start. everything and really, really, grinding and then just, yeah, man, it was a lot, it was a lot of work and um, because you, I mean, dude, you, and it's been said countless times by legends, uh, not legends, just people like me, like monstrous athletes. like you're coming into the league, I mean in an incredible way, I also like being a big man like that, going up and down the court, I feel like we've never done it and still, and I'm going to go on record as seeing someone like you with that size and power going up and down the court you know when you're at the age where you like I said you have so much confidence in yourself that you suddenly realize that maybe you're too confident, right?
about last night 588 shawn kemp
Of course, when you think you're too confident about something, you start to doubt yourself, so it was a lot of things going through your head, man, and then you tell yourself these guys are literally beating me up, I want say. literally, literally, like they're wearing you down a little bit physically because they're so much stronger than you, so it's like, what do you do, what do you do in those situations where you have to find something? can give you the advantage, yes, everything you do in life really comes from the advantage of saying: I'm going to do this, etc., so when I started putting on ankle weights, heavy vests, I would go running stairs all the time.

night

, so I know it was like I was looking for something to give me an advantage with these guys and it was a good thing that I did because it really helped me with my legs first of all, but it also helped me with my confidence man, so , you already know.
I realized that it wasn't just about fighting, it was about these guys being really good, they've been practicing for many years, oh yeah, so it's like you're fighting guys like X-Men, Michael Cage, like these types are you. Well, yeah, man, you gotta make that what they learned in those three and four years of college. I mean, you only have a couple of months to learn all that and it's hard, but you can do it, it's definitely possible. When did you do it? That patented baseline spin move becomes part of your game because, man, that was something that the way people try to implement the Jordan uh dunk or whatever or the tongue, every time he had the ball On the post I was trying to turn like you.
Did they prepare another shitty game for kids? It falls apart, of course, Dane Stevenson understood that. He is an ass doctor. He now he gives it to Ray Baseline Fadeaway. You got to be kidding. I'll tell you how powerful that move you already know was. Me watching this in the NBA and what was going on, I was looking for something I could do that these guys couldn't do. That baseline spin move was so effective that it changed the rules of the game. They changed and prevented me from doing it. that after I had scored about 20,000 points in the NBA, they came to see me one day and it was like you can't do the baseline spin move anymore, everyone complains about that move and now if you do it, that's the trip, so now you have to put the ball on the ground before you turn and I was like, yeah, that's illegal, you can't do that, but it also gave me the confidence that now I have it, now I have it, if I can do something, if the legal definitely says, hey. man we can't stop this right so that's what you do as a professional man you look for ways to build your confidence so I'm like no this is fine if they're going to stop they will. he's going to stop me michael jordan is waving his turn to travel he gets four steps every time he goes to the basket but suddenly I can't go to the baseline spin duck okay okay you were abusing people absolutely steal Elijah wants everyone were there one that you I remember doing where you, I mean obviously the famous one that beat um Rodman in the final, right, oh, that's the tea bag, did you know when you stopped?
Oh yeah, definitely, like I've been waiting to give him a tea bag for a couple of games. although without a doubt, man, and I only did that, I only put a tea bag in it because I was doing my boy's tour, frank burkowski, man and it was like I had to do it, frank was getting so frustrated, dennis le He blew kisses like you knew. grabbing his butt you know he didn't do anything to get it into your head things like that don't bother me but you know some guys say yeah I get mad if he don't grab my baby yeah you know frank like frank was like you know he just I couldn't stand it, so I had to do something to Dennis to let him know that even though they were going to win the show, I had to do something that would embarrass him a little bit and be iconic, I mean.
You got the sign on the uh oh yeah, so yeah, he trusts me, he let me know when I did it until he said oh, you got me, you got me, you got me right, we were in, I think seventh grade. dude and that was the talk of the day, we were like dude, I mean everyone was, you know, we had some little kids trying to rap like Robin, like try Kemp's nuts, I mean it was like it was a big deal here so the team is pretty nice, you know, it's still not set in stone when you got there, so it's like you had Ricky Pierce, he had some good pieces, right, hey, Renee, like Derek McKee, they have so many guys in front of me. old politics these guys are very, very good players, yeah, and when I go on the record and I'll say this, you know, when I'm 18, these guys really helped me a lot, you know what I'm saying.
I'm like I'm digging deep for information from these guys to educate myself on what's going on, everything's new, everything's new to you and there's so much going on, man, um, that makes it hard. So these guys I played X-Men with even though he beat my ass every day Oldham Colonies Derek McKee Um Ricky Who else Ricky? It was Uh Eddie Johnson Dana Barrows Yeah, when these guys really helped me grow like an ace. One guy, though, really took care of me when we went out at night, you know, before games, they kept certain people away from me, they always kept an eye on me, so I always feel lucky, man, and I don't know if I'm saying that . enough, but I always feel lucky to say that when I came in, even though it was a competitive age with these guys, me and those guys also respected me enough to take care of me, it's a big deal because I think and I heard you talk. about this when we were at the triple gate uh a quick board show we just talked about young guys and you're talking a lot about the business sense of these guys now and how you know a lot of them don't have someone on their side.
Really taking care of them in that aspect, but also on the court, it's like sometimes you can be a young kid that goes to a team and have enthusiasm around you or not and the team maybe isn't willing to take you under their wing. When you show a little bit of resilience and a little bit of fight, then guys start to respect you a little bit more and say, hey, not only is he going to be good but he's also pretty tenacious, so, no, man, it was like that. At that time it was a big moment for me, man, because as much as I learned about the city, I also learned about the other parts of the city, which was good, so you're starting to get some confidence, yeah, early In the 90s, right, I was recruited. 87 89 uh and then uh you're being mistreated by the older guys oh yeah, starting to get the but now that, like you were telling me, you're starting to get the respect because you show the Brazilians the right thing so that they I'm starting to help you , man, and as you know, things are a lot different now in professional sports than they used to be, so let me remind you how when I went out to practice, a practice day was usually around four for me. hours four hours of practice before 12 noon four hours of practice later that day that was usually my schedule of about four hours two four hour periods your job is an eight hour day yeah nowadays not even they can do that to the players because they don't even allow them to be on a basketball court for that long, so just the guys only spend two hours on the court and then they spend like two hours in the weight room, but it used to be where were we. doing four hours here, four hours there and then one of the assistant coaches and I would come back at like 12 o'clock or 12:30 or 1 o'clock in the morning and shoot for another hour, hour and a half again, man.
Yeah, but that's what it took to get good, I mean, I mean, I mean, you know this is your life and your career, so when you start to develop that spinning movement, the jumper that I feel like I had to being was that, the first thing he did. Everything is going well, it's time to start improving. What were the first things he saw that you wanted to improve? Because again I feel like, even when you were a great man, you went back up and down the court, you said, but your ball handling was out of control, right, but your jump shot became something that I was I eat your money all the time, no, absolutely, that's what happens when they meet you, here I am, and I'm getting too old for dunks, so everywhere I go, all over the country, people just say oh, the darkness, the dunk, that's right, the duck, which is cool, but when I went to the dunk contest, the only thing on my mind was that I wanted to be on the all-star team and I thought, how can I? make the all-star team, so I'm watching all these guys on the dunk contest all-star team and I was just saying all these guys throw the ball really well, like I really have to learn how to shoot this. ball, I didn't realize that I really had to learn how to throw this ball, so that's really what it took a lot of practice time, man, just shoot the ball, shoot the ball and by the time I was working on this jump shot, shoot the ball. shooting the ball was like when we drafted Gary so here comes Gary Payton to the team my sophomore year and then it's like Gary was a great player in college but couldn't shoot a shot when he first entered the NBA , so here it is.
We have to be the two of us and did you have a say in the selectionlike the seven pictures, everyone was scared, um, but you did it in all of them, I mean, yeah, I mean, Tommy was like my son at first. Even though they beat us, seriously, I have a lot of dunks on my table, he's a great player, you know? What happens if you block enough shots? Yeah, yeah, I mean, they messed with me twice. I think my whole career, well, maybe three times if you count four or five with Shag Shaq, yeah, but I mean, yeah, well, yeah, you know, I got sunk into Robert Peck.
He got me really good one time and, while I was in the morning, I think the doctor I once talked about the new arena, uh, coming soon and um, for Seattle, the coliseum, for me, you know, I went to so many football games. science growing up in Key and the Coliseum and I will be, you know, in the future, shortly. Come on, but I found the Colosseum to be so much fun for you guys to be a fan because it felt almost like a black box theater for a small play, it was so intimate even in the man in the rafters like you said you were playing for uh for those guys up there we would absolutely be sitting there uh it was just so the noise was compact something about I was also walking through downtown Seattle to get there it felt a little hidden in the back it felt underground which I think was right, yeah, can you talk about playing there in the '90s?
Oh man, I didn't want a kid, I didn't want them to remake the college simulator, I thought the college symbol was perfect, I really did it and I enjoyed playing there because of the crowd. I mean, yeah, there was a lot of concrete and a little cold inside that building. It was cold. Calabro told me it was like a barn, but you know. At the same time, we had a great time, we had a great time playing there, the fans were great, the noise inside was tremendous, the way the setup was in the first place and, like I said, it was like a beer night, You know, those nights when they had beer nights those guys motivated me man, seriously, they motivated me here you're a little kid you're sitting at the end of that bench and you're dying to get in the game and do something so then it all goes down. reduced it to me like getting into the game diving after loose balls getting rebounds um making these exciting plays the coliseum is where it all happened williams jumped in front of mcmillan on the near wing he will stop with the ball with the turns of the head that the leather on claps feeds over cage covered by ellis michael removes peyton's hands up feint leads ellis slower into lane turns corner stops in midair emits cap juggles got it hooks it missed rebound cage fighting with ellis saved by peyton right to camp under cover stutter step hit block recovered it hooked it without bounce sail up not blocked by williams grab with a touch on the

jump next blocked by williams out of bounds cross from mcmillan to gary passed by many changes like when I first came to Seattle We played the Lakers, you know, I went out to the game and, uh, all the Seattle college kids basically wore Magic Johnson jerseys, yeah, 32.
I mean, I thought we were playing in Seattle , it felt like we were playing in uh, yeah. We were playing in Eagle Wood somewhere and at that moment it was like for me to see that I was selling myself it was like I was telling Gary that we have to change this, we have to make it where every time they come to this arena We we put in some green and gold and we were able to do that, but I think we went from second in merchandise sales to first to first in merchandise sales and that's really big, we're doing that crazy, yeah, that's really big. in professional sports, I mean, obviously, that's billions of dollars, but not only that, it's just the popularity of what you have to become to go from second to

last

to number one is incredible because we were selling more merchandise than um Chicago Blizzard. at one point, really, yeah, absolutely those playoff series, the phoenix, obviously, uh, sticks out, the west was always stacked, I mean, it was like you had Malone in Stockton and then Phoenix with their own yeah, Barkley, uh, Houston felt like it was always a problem, yeah.
I was there? Did you treat all opponents as if they were not the same? But were they there? What did Malone Barkley and Elijah Wan bring? That was, he was one of those less intimidating guys to play against. Was there a squad like? It's good, awesome. We draw Houston. First, this wouldn't be as bad as Phoenix, well, I like it on myself. I didn't really have any problems playing against Charles Barkley because we play the same position, yes, and Charles is a great player and does very well for his team, but my advantage over him was much greater than him.
I'm at 6 10 and Charles is about six four six three listed at six six the way he heard at six three six six but he actually has six in a row so I really had no problem playing against Charles Barkley you know , I was very afraid to play against Carl Malone. um obviously he, John Stockton, myself and Gary learned a lot. We modeled our game myself and Gary after Stockton and Malone. just put some ice on that game rebound stockton back to utah the long feed to malone almost with my eyes closed almost our games were over because i could run and jump and shoot but we did the same things as stockton malone everything tangible the little things and that's what it was about, we stole a lot of their playbook, yeah we respected those guys a lot they still left us a lot of them, now Stockton Malone was kicking our bus for a long time and then we did it every time.
They were kicking our butts, we were just writing notes and stuff really, we were going to get back together and we finally got to the point where we were beating them and then it felt pretty good because that's what you want to do. but you want to learn about your business, but you also want to be able to master it and it's like, man, here are these people that I was looking at three years ago, now I'm mastering it and that's great. Through that, it's amazing to hear them say that they would take notes like that after a few sets because that happens in any job, even comedy, that's why they record all their sets, absolutely listen to them, I mean, you know acting jobs what are they doing.
No, I mean, it's kind of a lost skill set, that is, just not feeling good. I'll just play better or I'll just think in your head like, oh, shoot more shots before the game and that'll be enough or I'll do it, I'll try harder in the next game, no, absolutely, I think nowadays it's funny that you said that. because I think nowadays a lot of people see it that way where they say, oh, I can practice a lot, no. no, you actually have to go study this movie, identify things, identify, look at what some of these great people are doing and then change your game to do what they were doing, but even better, yes, I'm serious and That's absolutely how it works. the first half kept it under reverse hammer spins the dunk contest the first one you went to was 91 and I heard you say that was intentional because you were trying to build your brand right you start to get some notoriety.
They're like how can I take this to a higher level? And that was a way to get some global respect, yeah, yeah, man, it really came from something like my mom and my mom were like, look, for you to become popular. one of these best guys that you have to build, build your brand, like I said, it wasn't really a big slam dunk, but then I was like, damn, I'm going to take this opportunity to go here and do the slam dark contest. I want to see what I can do, yeah, you know, instead of trying to win the dunk contest, I'll try to be the person who dunks the hardest.
I want to do something different, so instead of trying to win the trophy, how about this? If I make the hardest dunks you've ever seen, everyone's going to walk out of this building saying my name and I just don't know, I said okay, that's what I'm going to stick with and then I made some of them? Like, oh, this is now, I'm in business, so I just tried to rip the hoop out of the goal, man and uh, and that's what it's all about, having fun with it, you know, and Sean Kemp, by the way, says . he's got some new things this year he's very lucy goosey you see he's very disjointed this guy will go in all different directions before he dunks his basketball a powerful body 6 10 240.
I had a little trouble with the catch but then a very powerful slam oh look he is the favorite magic your opinion on that magic johnson well he has about 40 cheerleaders here all the NBA players are cheering for him here for me like you said before they like power and he just gave him power but also him I jumped so high when I played shh I played 14 14 years man and I never sprained my ankle, so you know, absolutely two ankles, that physical exercise 24 hours a day, three days I still haven't sprained my ankle playing ball or nothing like that, so no, no, I feel like I felt it.
However, I was very fortunate to be able to go through my entire career without any injuries. Absolutely, it's one of the reasons I wanted to stop playing when I was younger because I was always afraid of getting hurt, getting hurt, that happens and, you know, I look at the guys. Even today I look at guys like Lebron James and marvel Jason Terry Good defense Wade from behind takes it to Chalmers Whoa now it looked like he jumped off the mezzanine to dunk this ball he's sending it down uh, um, the play that uh, when kevin durant got a preseason game to come back and play at key arena, yeah, um, which by the way, we talked about the coliseum key arena having its own big, I mean, I know we didn't want to see it renovated and improved.
Absolutely great house, lots of good memories, oh yes, without a doubt, especially when I first did it. You know, I wasn't crazy about the maroon colors they added to the green. Yeah, I wasn't that crazy, but you know, I guess. uh you know, as far as the arena when Kyrie was first made, I think he was definitely in top form and I think this one is going to be great, also the intros that the player presents to me, you know, I went. I've been to a lot of NBA games. I feel like it was the and I was always curious if you guys got as excited about them as we did because the whole thing was like the logo came out of the key arena.
Squatch drops now, ladies and gentlemen. standing for the 1996 oregon state pacific division champions number 20 gary washington number eleven trinity junior college the way it works is like this when the day goes by when you go to the game and you're getting ready for the game and stuff something that clicks when you're going through all that, so when you get to the arena, man, you put on the uniform, it still has a click that you're going to play, yeah, you wait, you wait what normally clicks. That's when I do the intros, usually that's when you start to smell like the popcorn that's smelling around because that's when people are filling their rings and then when you start to smell that popcorn and then the intros come, that's when you get a Many times you get totally locked in and that's when you know you're really about to go out and get your ball in the year we made it.
It was great playing against the Bulls, but I actually think we were better. like two years before that, oh yeah, where we had the opportunity to go even further, so I always tell people, it was the two years where Michael Jordan retired and didn't play and the Houston Rockets won, yeah , we should have won a championship. In one of those two we really disappointed ourselves by not winning the championship. One of those two years because we have the perfect opportunity and opportunity, but it also shows you that opportunities come and go very quickly, yes, and you know when he retired.
It was like open season for everyone. Was there a collective text as a group from the NBA that said Mike was done? We have a chance, well, dad, a little. I think everyone felt like they had a better chance, but I think with us we thought. We had an even better opportunity. We actually thought we were really good at the time. We thought our table was superior to the rest of the league and the team, the young team, had been together for at least three four years. So I just saw that we had everything it took to win a championship.
Our only problem is that sometimes it's like anything you do in life when you have a team, if you bring in one or two pieces from outside, sometimes that team can mess with your team. Out of selfishness, we had a couple of guys that we brought in that weren't happy with their roles and they complained, so those complaints, those selfish thoughts dictated our future a little bit, that's why we lost because we had a lot of guys. arguing with each other and stuff, so once we cleared that up, we were great when we went back to '96 and played.
Sport is about winning, but above all it is about chemistry. Yeah, you know, you have to have the right chemistry to be able to be. Well, it was great to have at least those two home games and be in town. It was like I was sure it's an experience you won't forget, right, oh man, without a doubt, like shhfunny about what's going on with Nate Robinson, but Snoop Dogg is singing the anthems he's trying to get. Irene Golf. Nobody would have said anything, yes, tennis, who cares, yes, swimming. get over it, but boxing, I mean, yeah, he's a different businessman and uh, Nate's a great guy, oh yeah, but he does a lot of good things around here with kids and stuff with the flag football league and stuff. , he's a great guy that I hate to see.
That happens to him, but every time you step into that boxing ring you really have to be prepared. He took it in stride. We did it. He was hoping that he would inspire NBA players like Steve Sheffer to come out of the woodwork and say, "Hey." pregame meal, pregame peanut butter and jelly sandwich, postgame meal, ribs anywhere in town, no ribs usually come from Metropolitan, yes the grill, no doubt, Metropolitan Grill, yes, they are , they're money yeah they make make my ribs they've made it the whole time I've been here that's the exact order they just give up the special they know it's coming man uh player you were more excited about the battle I came chooseh won I keep a choice because I was afraid of him, so I always had to bet something because I was excited to play against him and I ended up getting the better of him most of those times, yes, but overall I can tell you that I was afraid of him. his butt the movement of the dream that was a real thing that was a real culture uh favorite poster of yours I'll say what mine is someone you came up with the umbrella the umbrella that that that's a cool photo that's a cool photo too you too I have a great smile it's like the um the best one right behind me is the one with the band aid there's one with the band aid and I'm going out I think I'm dipping robert hori and that just means what What kind of things I had to go through, man?
That's what you have to go through to make all those dunks. You have to take a little beating. I love that favorite mate we talked about. Yeah, but the first dunk in New York, the double bomb backer is inverted uh also just the angles of that, I don't even know how you get the ball in that spot and you think doing that was like a dribble and then no, not even You didn't even haggle, right? use it, I just caught it on jumpers, yeah, that was like one of those dunks when I look back, I'm like damn, damn, what was I thinking?
What was that? Yeah, I'm glad I made it, you know, with dunks like that. Are you thinking or is it just a reaction, just a reaction? This is a complete reaction. uh favorite tv show currently favorite tv uh kumbakai oh yeah netflix yeah killer one of my friends is on it is like that yeah, I'm telling you, yeah it's a killer man, oh this is good, my favorite thing to do when you're stoned, for all that can be done on high, uh, talking, oh yeah, absolutely, man, yeah buddy, some people get the urge to eat, I like to talk a lot, you got something good? text to live like that, no, I mean just with my friends and stuff, we just give each other away all the time at sports games, you like to kick, yeah, we like it, we like to kick, talk to each other and just make fun of each other. everything, man, that's what it's all about, active stoners are much better, there are times, look, there are times when you just want to stay glued to the couch, yeah, bury your face in a pie and you know, fall asleep exactly the way way you are sitting. when you talked to indica, that's the end of the couch, i'm sure you've got some good stuff here uh yeah, that's my favorite too.
I always, from the moment I started smoking, thought I wanted to kick it, you know, I never want to have it. too loud to the point where I can't look someone in the eye and talk and know what just came out of my mouth. You know it too, that's why you want to be functional. Yeah. You know, when I consider myself lucky when I've only been. loud once or twice where I didn't feel like I should talk, yeah, you know, what if you were like it was the fourth game of 1992? No, it wasn't the game, it was actually the dab roast, so I did a dab roast man, I did the dab. roasted like a couple of months ago and then I just said don't even talk I'm just like whatever you do just smile don't talk because I'm totally mean I don't think anything will come of it. right, oh I've been there dude, I ran into Larry King while I was baking at the movies, one time he was like the first celebrity I met in LA and I reached out to him because in my head I thought what you had to say. something for him, right, you have to say hello to him, yeah, you don't have to do anything, walking the other way is what you have to do, but he's with his nephew and I walk up and go, hey, larry, I'm a big fan . and my eyes are just cash, so like I'm just a pro, I'm probably not even looking, I'm just saying hey man, you're the man, man, and he was like hey and I'm going, hey, I'm going. come on, so what are you guys doing, buying some snacks, you just stay, he's at the snack machine, by the way, he's clearly buying snacks, oh yeah, he goes?
I'm with my nephew, do you mind? I don't go at all. I just got interviewed by Larry King. and then he's like, uh, and my friend was like, dude, stay away from that guy, so there are times when you gotta know being so high and being home, but okay, best advice you've ever gotten, oh man. you just never stop learning and once you know, you never stop learning, I mean, you're good, at least in your mind, you're always open to ideas and situations. I love that favorite part of being a parent. Favorite part of being a father. a father, simply the man of comfort for your children, like for me with me, my children change everything.
The responsibility of being a parent changes you as an individual, so you might be going through some things as an individual, but the responsibility. Is being a father overweight? Everything, nothing was more important than my kids, so that's what always made me say at the top is because none of the other things really matter, just being a dad I love it, are you guys excited about this new venture? the store and everything, yeah, I've been telling them for a few years that I was interested and now they're like, oh, they're like, yeah, there's like Israel dad, you're like on the side of the building, yeah. you're selling marijuana, I live in the dream, yeah, I say, hey, the kids, my kids are older, so I feel really good about the businessman just because, since my kids are older now, they can't go to the school anymore. school. college, so I think now I have time to focus on working with a team of people, yeah, and I'm lucky to work with a good team of people.
That means it, yeah, the last two questions, I want to talk about the story. Have you ever heard of g? Best conversation you heard from Gary. You better talk to him about Gary, whether on the court or off it. Oh, no doubt, he would be off the court and he had to be. It had to be Gary. he talked a lot about but you had to be gary and michael jordan when gary michael jordan gary told michael jordan that he um gary said he drove a ferrari just like michael did and then michael told us all that he drove ferrari because he drives free shoot that's amazing in and out of the dicks and for those of you who aren't familiar uh in and out obviously a great fast food place on the dix you can't go wrong come on man you can't go wrong with the fries Dick's fries with no fries, a double cheeseburger and a chocolate shake, come on man, I just got high listening to you say it was like Broadway food all night, you can't go wrong with that, it doesn't get any better that we used to get it at my friend's house. my brother worked there and we walked up and he just said no more and he gave us two bags and we put them in the key sand, there you go, he's the best, um micro lebron, I mean, no, you know, I'm going to say this man . michael michael jordan is the man, he is the number one basketball player, he will always be remembered as number one, but lebron james is the best.
Michael Jordan is the number one basketball player, but Lebron James has had the best career of anyone in basketball history. he has the best career and what I mean by that is that this Jordan went 6-0 in a championship that will never be surpassed because most people are going to lose at least one. Yes, he went 6-0. Lebron has had like 12 or 13 championships now. he has the best career of anyone who's ever played in the NBA because he's played for a long time and he's been able to stay healthy and he was labeled the king so pretty much things went his way, yeah, since he was able to get into the NBA.
NBA, so I think he's had the best career of anyone, but I absolutely think Mike Mike, you can never go wrong saying Michael Jordan because he was 6-0 in the Champions League, he globalized the game, absolutely, um, he's okay, so this has been amazing. That's right, I can't thank you enough for making time, man, uh, the fact that we're doing it in Sean Kemp's cannabis, the basement of this store, I know we talked a little bit about your involvement in the community. and this has a lot to do with that you want to give back but also stay connected because I know Seattle is a big part of your life and to still live here, what do people need?
I know about the store that maybe they're not just because it obviously got a lot of publicity and press and people were like, "Now you know they're making you legal in more places and Seattle was one of the first. I'll say this." just from being here and I know you guys promote this as a thing but the prices are really good and I've probably been to too many stores my mom would say when I get home yeah but you got everything right the store is uh aesthetically amazing , you have NBA jam machines, yeah, so just tell me about your connection to this store and what you like about it.
Well, first of all, it's me, but I also work with some great people around here, but we think about our ideas and what we try to capture is just having to create a great project that sells cannabis but also be very active, sociable and friendly with the people in the community, so I think what sets us apart first of all is when you walk in, um, if you go to any of these cannabis stores, it's hard to get people's time, in general, a lot of times they're very busy, it's very difficult for these people to actually work you talk to yourself but the thing is I'm proud that when you come here we actually have very nice people working for us they are attentive when you come in trying to help you with different items regardless of whether you want be small cannabis, regardless of whether you want it.
CBD products, regardless of whether you want edibles, whatever you want, they will help you and I think that's the most important thing, so I think we're very, very friendly, kind of similar to when you go to an Apple store, yeah. you say, oh, I thought from the beginning, I just welcome you, that comes from the people that I work with, they've done a really good job of exploring those opportunities for people and just letting them be. nice and be themselves, make people feel comfortable, yeah, so that's the most important part, I think of this story, the second part is absolutely the prices, man, so what we can do, we can buy wholesale things and lower prices, yes, I think. that helps everyone is huge, yeah, I mean, it's just important, it's important and did you notice it as just a consumer or was it something that you guys, when you guys knew you opened, you guys said we wanted to make sure that you know that in that moment?
Well, it was when we were developing this store, this is what we talked about, but the people who were around when I got involved in this story, some of my coworkers and owners, they also own their own store like in Vancouver oh yeah, so, that's one of the things that was when I wasn't visiting his store, that was one of his strengths. I got it, it was being very nice, very friendly and keeping the prices low, so obviously when we started talking about this store. That was like, of course, we want to adapt those good things from your store to this store.
Yeah, I mean, that's what makes her know that it's just about surrounding yourself with the right people, coming up with the right concept, and doing the right thing. And I think we're all on the same page and I was very fortunate to work with some great people that I'm working with, but also to be on the same page, yeah, and I think that made it a lot better. In my case, there will probably be a lot of people who will want to come just because it's Kemp's cannabis, which is amazing, which is amazing, but eventually what you'll probably see me get into is definitely some of those creams and lotions. to try to attract non-smoking people here, I mean, I think that's important.
By the way, why doesn't Kareem Abdul-Jabbar date Kareem's cream? It's a missed opportunity. Where is my Kareem camera? Come on, friend, the product writes. that's a great idea hey, you have his number, I have his facebook, I'm trying, hey, I'm trying to get sam perkins to come here, come on, uh, and take advantage of some of this great business that we sell, you're selling a great business. We have a very soft upstairs, that was the other thing I wanted to ask you, I know you have gummies, tinctures, uh, edibles are great, you know? And um, I'm at 50 right now, but no, I'm kidding, I'll keep it together.
I'm sweating from the knees down no, um, uh, yeah, just, you know, I know sometimes it's better for your pipes if you're uh, but I don't know, man, a good joint, a good joint, I love it . I still enjoy a good bubbler and bong, which I know you sell them too, oh yeah man Zeus, you got this guy up there, you got this, these things called Zeus tables, man three, three pre-roll bloods coming in this package, you have to try it. I'll love it, yes, I'll probably get married next April. My fiancé doesn't know. He'll probably spend most of the budget here today, but you know you have to spend money to make money.
You have to do it. It'll be worth it, okay, this is, this is amazing and I mean you're aware that you're still so involved in Seattle and uh and and giving back and being like that, I was telling my stepdad on the way here. and he was uh because he saw the talk with you and gary on nba tv and he's like man he seems so cool and he's articulate and like set. I'm like, yeah, man, he's white, you can't open a business. like that and not being together, but it's awesome, man, even when I met you at the Rappaport show, you're like you know you put people like you know, a hero's mind on a pedestal. and then in moments when I met you and you know you were so kind and generous than me, what if I start crying right now, but like who you are was still there, but you were just a person because you try to like a person. and then we started lying shooting, I think I even broke my balls on my shirt, which still hurts, no, but we were, we just, we had a good relationship right away and I thought that's great because they say.
Sometimes you know you don't want to meet your heroes because there is absolutely and I'm sure everyone probably has a story like that, you know? So I just want to applaud you for just being, you know, keeping it, keeping it real. and keep your feet on the ground and no, no, thank you, thank you very much, you know, what's funny when I got the phone call a couple of weeks ago from my coworker, training when he when he when delivered a message. to me, I automatically knew who it was, oh yeah, yeah, so whatever, absolutely thank God you got it on tape, yeah, I automatically knew who it was, so I definitely appreciate you, but I appreciate you reaching out and Hopefully the friendship continues.
Think about it, man, and also guess what my best friend is, who was going to be my best friend, he just got the boot, man, he's going to say, hey, what happened, I'm sorry, man, the rain man wants your place, everything is fine, yes this has been amazing. We'll go up here, walk around the store and um and uh yeah, thanks again buddy, so there goes the wedding band budget. I'll just sing in the background like what happened to the band. Oh, I will. an acapella so welcome to the game ladies and gentlemen shout out the name seattle supersonics our basketball supersonics oh yeah break invaders supersonics oh yeah supersonics not just the regular strong team supersonics oh yeah supersonics supersonics oh yeah not just a regular team your seattle supersonics
