Snapper Rig Setup | Simple DIY Snell fishing rigs tutorial

Mar 14, 2024
Good morning everyone, I'm Alan from Fishing Mad. It's usually this time of year when I start preparing for the upcoming

snapper

season and in this video I'm going to take you through a step by step guide on how to create your own

snapper

rigs

and the good news is it's very quick to make and very easy to learn, so let's start now. This rig is called a

snell

or snood rig and is absolutely perfect when bait

fishing

with a full sardine. whole silver whiting, a squid head or other large baits, now the good thing about this rig is that you only need a handful of items, so you will need a pair of scissors or cutters, you will need a quality trace, so I have their Stroke of 50lb black magic now you can use 40lb you can use 60lb it is purely a personal preference you will need two chemically sharpened hooks so either size five or size six so I have large mustard red hooks from size five which are perfect for this type of rig, you will also need a lumo band which will be used as a bit of an attractant and also to prevent your rig from getting tangled.

You will need a plumb line. Now you can see what I have. a wide range of ball sinkers in different sizes and it all depends on the current and tidal flow of the system you are

fishing

so I usually fish Portfolio Bay which is a very gentle current so normally I will fish with a sinker no. larger than a p but if you are fishing in areas with stronger currents and tidal flows then you might want to go up the scale and use something like that and then all we do is finish this rig with a quality barrel swivel like that , which is appropriate. to use 40, 50 or 60 pound line okay let's put this rig together so the first step is to take your trace and what we want to do is cut a length that's probably about three to five feet and I know that if I use the full width of my arm, that's about the perfect size, so if I grab it and do that, then I'll grab my cutters and cut it off there, so take your size 5. or hook size, then take your 50 pound trail and we're just going to run it through the eye of the hook and then just duplicate it so it's nice and easy to work with now that we're.

More Interesting Facts About,

I'm just going to tie that using a blood knot or a single knot, so I'm going to use a single knot because I find it easier to work with when you use line that's that heavy, so all we do is "Just we're going to create a circle, okay, like this, and then we're going to pass this slogan through the circle eight times, so if we do one, okay, two, three, five, six, seven and eight, okay, now it looks like this and what we're going to do is before we squeeze it, we're just going to wet it to make sure it doesn't burn or wear off when we squeeze it and then we're going to put the tag in its mouth and you're just going to squeeze it really good, make sure that be really nice and strong and tight, okay, and you can see there's a perfect knot, okay, then take your scissors and just cut that access tag and you'll be left with what's absolutely perfect and super strong and you'll see how much.

The more you pull on it, the stronger the knot becomes, so the next thing we're going to do is grab our second hook, so if I grab one from here and then what? what we're going to do this time is grab the top end of this leader line and run it through the eye of the hook and then what we're going to do is To slide it all the way down now what I'm trying to do is try to have a length of about 10 centimeters. between the first hook and the second hook. I just find it's a really nice length when you're using a full sardine or a full silver lighting, so making sure that this line goes over the back of that hook, all we're going to do is grab the line and we're going to wrap it around of the back of the hook about 15 times until it's like it matches the tip of the hook, so if we grab that line, okay and then we just go behind the eye and then we're going to wrap it around that, about 15 times, so you can see it's exactly in line with the tip. of the hook is now fine, so just pinching that in there we can see that it's nice and tight and all we're going to do is grab the top of our scribing line and run it through the top of the eye of the hook. okay, like this and then just feed it all the way through, okay and then just make sure to check that it's nice and tight, okay, really pull on that, make sure it's not going anywhere and you can see, look at that already, so that's how it is. really very nice and neat, so you have your first hook here with a single knot and then you have your second hook there, which is not actually tied, it's just the way we've threaded it, so all What we do now is grab our lumo account.

We use them for two reasons: one is for a bit of attractant because they glow in the dark and the second is that it keeps the gear from getting tangled, so all we do is just thread. that through like this and then roll it all the way so that it's now on top of your platform like that and then what we're going to do is grab our little ball sinker, so here's my little ball sinker. and again we're just going to feed that in, okay, now look at that to see a rig that's perfect and that's really really strong and the only thing left to do is just set the barrel pivot all the way to the end of this tracking line. .
So if we grab our barrel swivel really tight and again, all we're going to do is a single knot here, so I'm just going to thread it, okay, thread it about the same amount and like we did with the first hook , We're just going to make a little circle, okay, and then we'll wrap it about eight times, okay, so we have one, two, three, four, okay, five, six, seven, okay, and then it'll look like this again, just lubricate it so it doesn't burn or wear off, it grows in your mouth and squeeze it good and you can squeeze it as hard as you can and then trim that tag again and not all the way through just leave it a little bit nice and that's our first rig that It's really very

simple

, so there you have it, we have a rotating barrel that has about 80 or 90 centimeters of travel that then goes down to a small lead ball, to a lumo bead, to our first threaded hook and then to our hook end that has a single knot and is an incredibly strong and reliable snapper rig that will serve you very, very well, especially if you are fishing local areas like Portfolio Bay or Western Harbor and now, if you plan on fishing with, say, half a sardine and you wanted a little bit smaller and easier

setup

, so there's a really easy variation of what we just did, so all you'll need again is about an arm's length.
Again, you will only need a size five or size six hook. Again you're going to need a lumo bead, a little ball sinker, and a barrel swivel, so we're going to put this together nice and quick, so again we're going to make an arm length stroke, okay, we're going to cut it, exactly like what we did in the last

setup

, all we're going to do is run the trace through the eye of the hook and then tie a

simple

single knot with eight wraps, okay, so create a little circle and then thread it eight times to that one two, three, okay, four, five, six, seven and eight, okay, before you tighten it, just lubricate it so it doesn't burn, keep it really tight, okay, now I have a perfect knot there, so cut that tag off Okay, so all of you?
What you're going to do at the end of your stroke is put your Lumo bead thread on the line, okay, then do the exact same thing with your small ball sinker, just thread that through that, okay, and now that's okay. , so it's a beautiful and simple. rig for a half peregrine or a small strip of squid and then all we're going to do is attach our barrel swivel to the end on the other side using a single knot like we did exactly on the last rig. so again thread that, give yourself enough folded space, okay, create a circle, thread it through that circle again eight times, so one, two, three, four, five, six, seven and eight, okay, before After squeezing it again, give it a little saliva, hold it. with your mouth and tighten and again you'll see that it's just a perfect knot, cut out that tag, okay and look at that, here's our second rig, which is a very simple rig to make but very effective so that you can I have a swivel whose hand is approximately 32 inches and 50 pounds of weight on a small ball, a lumo bead and a hook that is held by a very strong single knot, so both

rigs

are absolutely dynamite and will serve you well. very very well as you head to the local snapper for the upcoming snapper season guys as always I hope you enjoyed this tip don't forget to leave a like and a comment and until next time good fishing everyone.
