More Interesting Facts About,

november 2022 sew fun presentation...

I'm going to start with some of the Notions and then Linda will follow up with her Notions. The first notion I wanted to start with is called the Ada Joiner Tool and it's actually a five in one tool and I'll do a demonstration. this um in just a few minutes here so we have that I think that's the first thing on your list we also have washable duct tape how can we live without this? It's wonderful for putting zippers on or putting anything on, um, we have a couple too. of quick and easy miter binding tools to help you when you bring the back to the front and miter your corners.

This turns out to be the double angle, we also have the one for the right angle and we'll do it. I'll show you those and then this little gadget. This may be helpful to some of you. When I started quilting, I didn't have a place I could put my quilt, so I had to hang it in the hallway and I could only come back. So far, this is a little quilt view finder and you can see your entire quilt even though you don't have much room to backtrack and you can see that yeah, that block maybe needs to be changed with this block, so it really is.

A very useful little tool, so now Linda will tell you some of the insights about it. The first one I want to talk to you about is the cork that we brought there, where there are four different types of cork: we have the black onyx and the embossed floral paisley and the dots and we have made quite a few items with several different patterns on those particular corks. Oh, we also brought Sally tomato keychains, the keychain accessories and made a couple of them using the antique gold. color on the back of the package. Sally has instructions on how to go to her website to get the dimensions to cut and apply the knob.
These would make a great little Christmas Christmas gift and then um you did it we have the world. pressing mat extra large wool pressing mat, we brought the smaller one about half the size in a previous presentation, but this one is especially good for making a long section of your quilt, for example for table runners when you are making those blocks to press them. You use the wool mat because the iron sends steam through your block and helps set the seam perfectly. Well, let's start with this book. This is called quick and easy sewing, and guess what you have. different projects, you can have projects for your sewing room, projects for your kitchen, projects for your home, table runners, some small baskets and guess what, it really is a wonderful value because it sells for 9.99 and you get 20 different projects , so with your cell phone discount you can You are paying around seven or eight.
I think it's seven dollars with your cell phone discount, so that's great and we're going to start by showing you some of these things. Just, oh, maybe I picked up the wrong book, but here we are. We'll show you this: We'll start with Jelly Roll Jam and this book has nine different patterns and it has patterns that are quick and easy to put together and you'll see some different ideas on how to make things. out of this book so Linda is going to start with her samples and then everyone is going to show mine on the jelly roll on the jelly roll yeah sorry the first quilt I want to show you is called a chart topper and this particular quilt isn't It was made with jelly rolls, it was made from my collection of purples, which I have a lot of every time I go to a quilt store and see a purple fabric I like, instead of getting it by the yard, I buy it in the fat quarter, so I have It's a great collection, you can make your own strips, just cut two and a half inch strips and make this beautiful Chevron design.
I use the backing fabric for the front edge and a very large overall quilting design so as not to detract from these pretty chevrons. I cut the pattern in a row to make it a little easier to transport, but it still turns out very big and pretty. The next one I made is called Rainbow Collect connection and since I no longer have little girls to sew for. I only have children. I found this multicolored bubble print very pretty and it's very easy, they're just long strips that you put together well and they won't stay there, let's go and then you have little triangles at the end of each block.
I laid the blocks in a horizontal direction and also used a large bubble quilt design to echo the print and the white highlights that color beautifully and I tied it with the same bubble print. The next one I made is called an ornament ornament, this one in particular. quilt I made with African prints and ditch stitched along each row of the block and then you added the black on top. I used my baby lock sashico machine to do the Sasha Co decorative stitching on the quilt, the fabric I used for the back is also an African fabric, they have very very large designs and I was a little surprised when I received it in the mail because I saw a photo that looked something like this and the design is actually much larger on most of these designs. they are large but they translate differently when you cut them down to two and a half inches now with that jelly roll I bought I was able to make two quilts with the fabric and again there is my large print on the back, it turned out great and Anne has hers to show you, okay, that's beautiful, the print on the back, I'm a purple girl and that's just beautiful, well, the quilt that I made is quite large and it's called, um, put me in front of the camera. and I forgot what I'm supposed to say um what chain link chain link I've only made this so many times yeah this is chain link and I actually used 30 of the 42 gelatin strips and you're going to create a strip of three rows of three different jelly rolls with the white one in the middle, so you can do it, you can spread it out however you want.
Those of you who know me know that I don't dance very well with chance because I like it. very planned and stuff like that, but I did it randomly with a little bit of planning. I arranged all the strips in sets of three and then placed them on my large cutting table and watched them sort. of were together, if you have two roses next to each other, it doesn't really matter because they are different prints and they will read differently, so once you use what you're going to do to start this row and it's long, it's almost a queen size quilt, so your rows are going to be very, very long, but if you notice that they are offset and the way you offset them is the first one, you're going to start with a white seven and a half inch piece and for this row, here the next one you're going to cut it in half and then on this one you're going to use your seven and a half inch piece, that's how you're going to stagger it, so one of the things that I actually found Well, there are two or three things that I found useful about this and one of them is to create the three row sections, create all of those and then divide them here for us, the white sash.
Now this quilt has a lot of negative space when you have a lot of white or gray or whatever as a background fabric and if you have a lot of it, it creates negative space, so if you remember, in Linda's Rainbow Connection quilt, she had all the designs from Very small quilts, so they got a lot more texture. It's basically a seven inch quilt design, so it doesn't give it as much texture. When she takes her quilts to a quilter, she can decide if she wants a small design or a large design. Now, putting them together, I suggest that you start in the middle and pin, place a pin in the middle of each row and then pin from the middle out because if you start pinning here you will end up with a little bit of fabric left. here you probably don't want, so get started. in the middle and pin and then every other row, well you can do a couple rows in the same direction and then switch and go the other direction because if you don't your quilt will go downhill this way and , uh, you.
You're not going to like the way it turns out so keep it nice and even sew the rows in opposite directions and then the last thing is to sew, take three of these sections and three of your sections or sash strips and make a section and make three of them and then put them together as the full quilt because you have ten rows here, so make a section of three, three and then four and work with those sections instead of trying to add each individual row to the quilt as you go because it makes It's a lot easier for you to handle it and for your machine to handle it, so it was really, really fun and then I put on some fabric that Riley Blake had given me and this is her chevron fabric and I thought it was a perfect fabric for the back, Also, everything I show you today comes from me, I call it a stash, some people call it fabric whatever, but everything has come from my stash, except The cork that we are going to show you now, one of the things we wanted to show you it's how you can take a regular quilt pattern and cut it now if I see a beautiful queen size quilt and I don't see it.
I don't want to do it, what I do is copy the pattern and then I take a marker and mark how many blocks I want my quilt to have. It's a very easy way to cut a pattern, but you can also make a table. quilt pattern runners and that's what I've done here with this table runner here and this I just took 12 blocks these are six and a half inch blocks and I put them together and put a frame in the middle and this is called strawberry lemonade , but it doesn't look like strawberry lemonade so I renamed it boxes and bows and it's made with a couple of red and green Christmas batik fabrics and then to quilt it I found a poinsettia block design and scaled it down to that would fit.
My blocks and I quilted it with our favorite metallic thread, King Star metallic thread. Now if you live near one of our stores that we carry in our stores, if not you can order it through one of our stores or find it online . or whatever if you're out of our area, but it's a wonderful metallic thread. I have used all types of metallic threads over the years. The only thing you have to remember is to use a size 14 top stitch needle and I had no breaks and most of my table runners that I'm going to show you today have been quilted with King Star Thread and then my little pumpkin here I made with pink Star Thread also the metallic thread, so that's a beautiful thread and that works very well, so those are our samples from our first book, so I think now what we're going to do is talk about this pattern right here, the set of zipper bags.
There are 11 different designs of zipper bags. they're going to be rectangular or they're going to be square and they start with four by four and go up to nine and a half by fourteen to fit all the different size tubes so I'm just going to show you what I did and then Linda will show you what she did she had some ideas really innovative by mixing cork and fabric that the ladies loved. This is actually an eight by eight bag and before I made this, I talked to the pattern designer and I said can you add cork to the bags? and she said anything bigger than five by seven, you can add the excuse, I'll add the wadding.
I wasn't sure if she wanted to add batting or not. I added the batting and this. it's eight by eight and they're fully lined here on the inside if you can see it there so that's one that I made and then I made the bigger one this one is actually out of the cork with grunge dots this one is out of the floral Cork and this is the largest size, everything is made in the hoop and she gives you wonderful instructions and pictures on how to put them together. It is not difficult to do it, you just need to read the instructions and follow them, and then this is pleasant. and big and it's fully lined here, so those are the two bags that I made, so now we're going to let Linda show you what she made and we'll go from there, so we're going to switch places here, they were a lot of fun. to do because each one looked a little different.
I made this one in a five by five inch square and the bottom has the toe binding offered in the design pattern. You can do it with stippling or without, you have to choose and again it is fully lined and the next one I made is also stippled on the bottom. I look forSee if you can dot it on the back. The design is simply for the front stippling and is also all lined. My son came over while he was sewing this and said Mom, could you make me one of those vinyl ones? I have a special tool that I need protection for and I said, well, I can certainly try that and it worked pretty well.
I didn't have to cover it because the vinyl was extra stable and had some sort of finish on the back, but I wanted to let you know that you can do it. Use them for more than just decorative bags and then the other one I made. I used the cork paisley embossed on the bottom and I use fabric on the back and I use the strip of fabric for the strip on the top when I made this I realized that cork is very stable so I didn't use batting on the front or bottom where the cork is, but it is stuffed into the rest of the bag and rotated.
The instructions tell you how to trim this so it rotates. alright and you ended up with a nice square corner so those are our zip pouch sets and now we're going to move on to Corky Wallace why don't you show them the wallets that you made. We also brought the Corky Wallet Pattern and again it was a very quick and easy pattern that you can use it has all the instructions. The only thing I did with my wallets I placed my driver's license against the pattern they told you to cut and decided I wanted to make it a little bigger to make it easier to place the wallet so I made one with the grunge dots and used a dark brown cork inside.
The good thing about this is that there are no findings on this particular little one. wallet, it works by just sewing only so far on the front flap and then the flap slides in and stays in place and I've been using mine for quite a while and it stays closed very well and I also made one with the cork in relief again just slides in there and you have it. She made one in the large Floral and there it is lined with her own Floral and one of the things we used the double stick wash tape for on these wallets was this A little strip on the Corky wallet is a stabilizing strip for this part of the wallet and helps you glue it on and stays in place perfectly so you can sew that piece.
I made this one with a vinyl that I thought was very patriotic. cactus but I lined it with a light colored cork, it still looks beautiful and you know, when we started making these it was a lot of fun and we started thinking about what else we can use to make these wallets that we have in our supply. I had this cute little floral vinyl that when I bought it I thought was a big floral, kind of like our cork, but I realized it was too small for pocket scale. I wanted to use it. It's perfect for the Corky.
I also used a Turquoise Suede on the inside and there's that strip I told you to use with double stick tape. It works very well. It is very difficult to use pins with these. You have to use the little clips to hold it in place and it just slides on. just perfect and then Anne had craft ticks in her supplies and from that she made these two and they turned out wonderfully great gifts for Christmas for stocking stuffers or for yourself well one of the things I'll tell you. The thing about extravagant wallets is that I use them for gift cards.
Most of my grandkids like money, as do most kids, so I just make them and use my leftovers and if they want to put their business cards on them or their credit cards or whatever can do now if you want to make a keychain all you have to do is measure your keychain here and this one is one inch and just take it and these are just scraps that I used when making the wallets and generally this one sometimes. I like a smaller one, but if you look online they will tell you to cut it. I think this is like an eight inch strip.
This is more like a six inch strip. Some people like to put it on their hand as well as their arm but they are super simple, just cut them two inches, fold them in half, sew them on each side and you will have a great gift and with the rose gold we have, everyone girls love this rose gold one so that would be one. wonderful, okay, now let's move on to the book quickly and easily, but let me tell you that this is just one of my favorite notions that I keep in my sewing room because you can use it on anything and I'll be telling you how to use it when you make a strap for your bag.
I couldn't have done it without him, but let's move on to the book I introduced first. You know, here in front of the camera, sometimes you get a little confusing, but anyway this was my best-selling book when we were, when I was traveling, because the projects are so fun, look at those cute hot pads and stuff like that, um , it's just a really versatile book from Annie, so now Linda I'm going to talk about the things she made with the quick and easy sewing book and then I'll show you what I made with wine. The first one I would like to show you is the crossbody bag that is in the back of the book I made. came out of the black onyx cork, this is a delicious feeling, it is so pleasant.
I found a button front that has a more triangular shape and felt like it went well with the lapel design and then bought the matching one. The side fittings on the back have a pocket for your phone and I have one of the larger phones so I measured mine and added a little to the top measurement of that pocket. I used black faux leather for my strap and a sort of metallic gray interior. It has a pocket that you sew in the middle to give you two pockets to store the different things you carry with you and then I made the wine bottle bag in the pattern, they provide a star type block for the front of this bag. but also at the bottom of the bag they give you some advice and that advice is that if you have orphan blocks of which I have many, you can use those blocks in the front.
I had made a quilt with this star block and had to cut it out. down to make it fit, but I felt like it worked pretty well and then I used some sort of serpentine stitching on the bag to give it some overall padding and it's absolutely perfect for gifting and then the book has pot holders for Citrus and them. re photographed in orange for the orange color for the orange yellow for the lemon slice my daughter looked at the book and said Mom, could you make those in green for my Mojitos? And I said, "Well, sure, of course I can, anyway, I used insulator inside the book pad." shows, uh, using the little white buttons for the seeds, but I thought maybe because she might be putting a glass on this, it would be better to use a decorative stitch from my machine and make that little seed and turn it over, use it to finish with a stitch adjustment.
Move it and do the next one. If you use cotton fabric in this, there will be no problem with sticking your hand into a hot stove and touching something and maybe melting it and zigzagging around the different citrus slices, so those were the three that I got right. I'm going to start with a wonderful pattern because this is an insulated iron bag, but I insulated it and I'll tell you how I did it, but this is a wonderful pattern just for bag itself, you can do it, uh, you don't have to put the applique on it if You don't want to, but it's just a great bag and the reason it's so nice and firm is because I used fusible foam in it.
I used a single side fuse or a double fuse, but I did not fuse the lining to make this bag. It's like your bag, you go down and they cut the corners and then you have the butt and so on. That's why the corners are so nicely mitered here someone said what did you put on the bottom. I said this is all just fusible foam, but to insulate it I didn't want to put insulbrite on it because I don't like it. the way Insulbright quilts are made when you have to quilt them to secure them to something, so what I did was I had some of the ironing board fabric that is Teflon on one side and then I used that and put the face of Teflon inside the bag. so it keeps all the heat in here, this is for a full size iron and when I travel I have a little travel iron here that I'm going to do a demo with.
I just use it, so I can still use it the same way. a bag I thought it would also be a wonderful bag to hold patterns in, so you also get instructions for the cord holders and these are the two, these are two of the big ones and then there's a small one as well, but I've been traveling a lot. Lately the little ones are in my travel bag with all my coms, all my iPad cables and stuff like that, but this is a really fun bag to make now. I wanted to show you and tell you about appliqués and I don't know.
If you can see, this is simply an appliqué and I went around it with a satin stitch and then on either side of the satin stitch. This is a technique I learned from one of our sewing consultants many years ago, Marge Woody. Many of you may know her. She taught Lana and I how to surround the satin stitch with a triple straight stitch, so I hope you can see how beautiful it is and how it finishes your appliqué when using a satin stitch. just use a normal zigzag stitch, but this is something i learned many years ago, it may have been from a faf educator, but you don't want to use your normal zigzag stitch because a normal zigzag stitch does zig zag zig zag, there is a sew on your machine that's called z z like Zorro just remember Zoro zigzag Stitch and that's what you want to use Zoro zigzag Stitch you have to make sure my hands on the camera azoro zigzag Stitch you can't say that very very fast it's straight along from the top and then zigzag down in a straight line along the top zigzag down, so when you compact those stitches together to get a satin stitch, your stitch doesn't have to come up, it's already straight, so now it gives you a much prettier stitch.
In your I'm just familiar with Foffin Viking and that on the Faucin Viking machines it will be with your regular stitches if you have a sibling or a baby. The lock will be in the quilting stitches and I'm sorry. I don't know about the other machines because I don't have a Bernina, but I think all your machines will have that stitch, so that makes me happy when I applique. I can use that beautiful stitch and it's finished off and guess what happens if Don't do it, if you make a mistake or you think you've made a mistake and it's not as perfect as you would like, that will cover it up so it not only looks beautiful but that can also cover your mistakes and us.
We make mistakes, we all make mistakes, so that's the first project I made and the second project, let's see, oh, I'll show you my bag now, this is my bag, like Linda showed you, we each made a bag and I I chose to do it. I got it out of the tool cork because I have a granddaughter who loves things like this, so I decided I would make her the keychain and the wallet and everything I would put in this for her for Christmas. The pattern requires a snap lock. and it's easy to install, but something Linda told me is that when she put her bag together she had to undo the top here to be able to put it on.
You can't decide where you need it to be until your bag is sewn. Know? sides, so since I've made so many bags over the years, I contemplated it and finally decided that I'm going to make it like a normal bag, I'm going to make my bag unit and I'm going to make my lining unit. and then I'm going to sew it around the top to finish it off because you've got your straps, you've got your lapel and you've put this on your lapel and what you do is there's these little screws here. Sally tomato has wonderful instructions on how to do this if you want to go to YouTube, but these are tiny screws and you put a little bit of glue here and you screw them in and then you secure them, you also need to know where to put this little accessory here.
So what I did was I lifted up the liner and through the opening that I left, I was able to reach up and put this in now. If you notice, I have a lining here, but I've padded the lining with just batting and this is it. Something I learned from Amy Butler many years ago when making her bags is that if you don't want to put the stabilizer on the front of the bag, add it to the lining. I do this all the time because it used to be what they said. use fusible fleece and you would use it on your fashion fabric and then your fabric would take on the look of the fleece, so what I did was I just quilted it in a grid, just a grid quilt, and it gave it the stability that she needs because you know , young people just throw their bags wherever they want, so I wanted to make sure it would work and let me tell you about the cork too.
I have worked with all different types of cork and this cork has a fabric backing so it doesn't crack like many other corks, so it is a very high quality cork. Let me tell you about the handles. When you make a handle, you can choose whether you want to have two layers or four. This is a very flexible vinyl and I had to make the handle out of it, so what I did was I cut a four inch strip because I wanted it to have a one inch finish and then I ran around the edges of the four inch strip.
I tried a glue stick and it didn't work. I ran this tape down each side of the four inch strip and then before doing so I marked the center. I marked one. I measured over two inches and marked the center because I want to bring in those edges. towards the center, so I did that and theI patted it down and they stayed down and then all I had to do to put them back together was just fold them like this and put my clips in and like that, if you're making a handle out of vinyl, leather, faux fur or whatever, this makes it really easy because It can't be ironed and usually when you make a fabric handle you can iron it, so that was just one of the best things about the wash wonder. masking tape the last thing is this it's called summer flowers and this is a table runner it's actually a table topper and um I use the Robert Kaufman uh I think it was a Christmas topper.
The five inch squares you are going to usefive inch squares, did you cut your squares? Yes, how many did you cut? Remember? I don't remember, yeah, well, I had a five-inch package. I had a five inch pack and I know I didn't use all of them so I don't need a bunch I guess we could count it but we don't have to but I wanted to show you here where the block is this is your five inch this would be red , would be my five inch block. What you do is you put a triangle on each end and you get this look and then we just place them however you want and then what I want to do now is show you how I use a couple of rulers and we're going to go to the machine.
This is the double angle ruler that will give you a perfect miter on either an octagon or a hexagon, so I'm going to go to the machine now. and I'm going to do some demos here, an overseas demo, but I need to get back here so Carrie can put me on camera. Oh, Linda, could you grab my two rulers that are right there on the table? I need the other one. oh, in a binding, yeah, okay, while she was traveling she was asking the ladies how many of you have someone in your house that has a five-in-one tool.
I do, my husband has quite a few five-in-one tools. Well, this is actually a Five in One Bookbinding Tool and I'm going to show you all the different things you can do with it if you notice there are two and a half inch marks and two and a quarter inch marks. Now I sew a lot in my RV. and if I want to cut the binding, I don't have much room to cut it, so you know, with this little ruler it's almost 12 inches, you can fold the fabric in four layers and you can cut the binding with this tool. that's the first thing you can do, you can cut the binding strips, the second thing you can do is square them, you can angle them to cut the dog ears.
I just hate dog ears, I think they get in the way I sewed as perfectly as I'd like so I love cutting dog ears so that's the second thing you can do if you notice there's a two and a half inch right angle here and a two and a quarter inch right angle. I'm going to show you what it's used for here in just a second and then there are things you can do and I'm going to save these little strips for the end so what I'm going to do probably needs to turn this over and hopefully I can do it the other way around. .
Then, what are you going to do? Can you go down there? This is where you are going to start sewing. Here you want to leave an 8 to 10 inch section unstitched. and you can see this is not 8 to 10 inches because it's a small swatch and then you want another eight to ten, maybe a 12 inch tail right here, eight to ten is probably good, so you're going to sew here and then you are going to sew. over here with your binding, come up here and then this is the last strip you're going to work with, so you're going to finish it and here's your binding, so what you're going to do is you're going to Extend this all the way out, the one you started , you're going to expose it completely and then you're going to endure it.
Okay, I haven't done this in a long time. Okay, I have to turn it around here. Well, here we go. I'm back in business here, so you're going to put this out there. I can't do things the other way around. Sorry, you're going to bring this is your last strip that you sewed and you're going to fold it. that those two edges meet, so you're going to take this ruler here and you're going to find that there's a two and a half inch mark and a two and a half inch mark, so from the fold I'm going to Place my two and a half inch mark on the fold. and then I'm going to mark this with a washable marker and that's where you cut the binding, one of the things I wanted to show you and I forgot to bring a pen, but I have it done right here.
You're going to mark this before you even start with the binding and how you do it. I have some bookbinding here. I'm going to turn on my little iron. it has a chance to heat up, what you're going to do is you're going to put this on your binding and then you're going to find the angle that joins it, it's two and a half inches and you're going to mark that line it would be on the wrong side here let me do that so you don't get confused you're going to mark that line right there with a washable marker or whatever you want that way you know when you cut this Out of here and since I don't have any more demonstrations, I'm going to cut this here and then when you put them together, You already have the ones that have that angle marked.
Oh come on, when you put them together like this, you put some pins in and then you have your angle marked and you don't even have to worry about when you sew it, that's how you use it, but have you ever heard someone from Quality Sewing say and there's more ? Well, there's one more thing you should do with your binding and that is you can press your binding in half with these little slits and I'll show you how to do it, so hopefully I can do this the other way around and not make a fool of myself.
Press probably eight to ten inches here and then I'm going to take and find the two and a half inch strip and I want to place my ruler like this when you look at it, so what you're going to do is we're going to go up and down across that like this. and then we're going to go down here and we're going to take a pin and we're going to stick this strip into your ironing board like this and then you're going to move all these things and then you want to make sure that your ruler is basically straight and then you can use your hand to get that wire out of the way and then you just do this and you can press We split it in half and it's so slippery that you can do five different things with this particular tool, this particular ruler, so add a binding tool, okay, Now what I want to do is move on to sewing here. machine and I'm going to show you how to use these, basically, these two rulers, this one is for right angles and this one is for octagon and hexagon, so here it's called the quick and easy miter binding tool for right angle . and then the quick and easy double angle miter binding tool and once I show you how to do this, it's the same for square corners, but I thought it would be good for you to see how to use this on a hexagon, so I'll show you I'll be right back, so basically what we're trying to do here is try to miter these corners beautifully and this is just a hexagon that I've used to create table runners because you can put strips around them if you want.
Find a hexagon, just look for one online. I'm sure you can find a pattern for a hexagon and this makes I'm just making these for my grandkids and they'll be kind of fun cup mats so what are you going to do? What you need to do is trim your batting and your hexagon evenly or trim your batting evenly with your hexagon and then you can choose how wide you want your finished binding to be. I normally use a half inch and due to the twist of the fabric it ends up being about 3 8 of an inch. I have used 5 8 inch and I have even used three quarters.
What you're going to do is double that, so if I want to finish half an inch. binding that actually ends at 3 8 of an inch. I'm going to trim my backing an inch all the way around, so that's the first thing you're going to do once you've trimmed your batting even with your table runner or whatever you're on. doing what you're going to cut, I cut this one inch and you're going to do it every way. The second thing you are going to do is press, you are going to bring this cut. to the edge of your project and you're going to press it all the way down until you're done and then you press it all the way down here and then we'll move down here so you can see how to use the ruler to mark this right, what did I do with my ruler here? okay, so what you're going to do is in the ruler here you'll see that it says octagon and hexagon.
I know this is a hexagon so what I'm going to do what you need to do is if you realize here um let's I have to understand this um yeah so yell like that okay here's a line here here's a line here and look , it even gives you the angle so you place this line this Edge this line on this Edge and then you mark these two lines here and since you have an edge pressed here you place a hash mark here and a hash mark here so what you're going to do is to go grab a pin and I need to find a pin here, you're going to fold them back like this, bring these edges together so they're nice and even and then I put a pin here and can you see the edge of your hexagon?
The point of your hexagon is right there. I'm going to sew from here to the mark. I'll sew backwards here, but I don't really want to sew backwards here. What I want to do is sew to the pin and then. sew it back and then cut it down the center here so you don't have a big blob of thread there, so the next thing we're going to do is go to the sewing machine and we're going to put our knee on our presser foot. foot down and we're going to sew right and I want to go back and then I'm going to sew up to that pad mark okay it wants to go up and then I'm going to take out my pin put the presser foot down and I'm going to sew backwards and then I'm just going to cut , okay I didn't set this up and it has auto lift when I'm doing something like this I don't use the back stitch button. don't use the presser foot up or whatever.
I turn them off because I don't want to have to do it with them. Well, now that we've done it, maybe it's okay. We have some threads here that we are going to cut. And now that? What I'm going to do is I'm going to trim this down to a quarter of an inch and I can blunt that little edge and then I take my thumb or yeah I think it's my thumb and I push it out and then use my little Point Turner and then these automatically turn down. like this and look at the beautiful miter you have, that's why you want to have these tools because bringing them to the front for your binding saves a lot of time and whether you run without binding fabric or not, you forgot to buy, let's say, half a yard or three quarters of a yard for put something together, you can certainly bring the back to the front and if I were doing it in a quilt I probably would. a little bit wider but remember if you want a half inch you cut an inch if you want 5 8 inch you cut an inch and a quarter so just double that and it works great so we don't have any questions about that we're going to move on and move on.
I forgot it. Linda has something she needs to talk about. I have something I need to talk about. When this is a one-take video, what we do, we don't rehearse this and we can't stop it and redo it and consequently, as we talk, we have all these things in our minds and there are some things that we forget. One of the things I wanted to tell you about that. What I found was very, very helpful, was a video that one of the women said inside her bag before inserting the lining, when you put this bar for your button closure and instead of putting the tips where most of the People tell him to do it.
Sorry, I take that back, they tell you to fold them, she said to fold them towards the center and then you take a piece of tape and you put tape along the back of the front of your bag to make sure those things they stay in place and they don't come loose that's what I wanted to remember where that clue is from it's from Sally tomato it's okay because I read it to you I forgot I did but I forgot to tell you about it and and then the other one was: I forgot to tell you about it my table decoration.
I made mine with spring type printed fabrics and use the octagon shape as a tool for my binding, but I didn't use five inch squares, I used regular yardage. The squares and then I cut them out so these particular pieces would fit and I also used my Baby Lock Sashico machine to quilt it and give it a hand quilted look, so anyway, those are the ones I forget, well, let's move on. to one of my favorite patterns I always have a favorite thing that I make every time I make it, it's so much fun and this is the BQ double time runner so I want to get started let's show you what you can do with this.
Table runner pattern that is not a table runner, so we are excited about that. I'm going to show you the two sizes you can make if you follow what the pattern says, so the first one is here. and this is the full size pattern and I used fat quarters. I used. I bought a few yards of this. These fat quarters are probably at least seven or eight years old and I was just waiting for me to make the perfect pattern so I decided to do this since it's fall and fat quarters work for this so if you notice you have some decorative strips here and then it has a decorative strip here and then these two have a mirror image and these two are uh I guess Mirror Image you would say now if you notice there's a tight binding or a border, what is the border?
Yeah, the border here and you can put it on or you don't need to and I decided I really like it. of Glitz in my life, my children give me a verybad timing because the more Glitz the better I like it so I had to add some gold, it's actually Fairy Frost fabric, these patterns come together very very quickly and what I did was what I did. put it in an edge to edge design and I use the King Star Gold Metallic and then this little one that I showed you earlier I used the King Star Silver Metallic.
Now if you want to make a smaller one, this is just one and I didn't put the border around the larger centerpiece, but you can see I just used scraps from what I had in my stash and you can have fun coordinating the pieces and stuff like that and I used border with edge with King Star gold metallic thread on that. oh sorry we're live and we're making a lot of mistakes this is from this pattern thank you thank you thank you for asking that it's called BQ double time chart runner pattern and if you notice it and you've done it.
I have been a quilter for a while, you will notice that BQ quilt has been around with the original pattern of their quilts for at least 20+ years, which usually doesn't happen with a quilt pattern, so now Linda will show you some. things that you can make that are not table runners and that you can get a lot of use out of your patterns again because I consult my daughters when I have my new books and patterns to make and I tell them what you like, what you want me to do with them and both girls said no more table runners, no more table decorations because I had given them so many, so I decided I would do something for myself.
I put two of the table runners together and made a bed runner so it covers an entire king size bed and then used the scraps I had left for the backing and I like to mix them up when they come down. I like to mix different fabric designs when I'm making something. I have a very large calf in the center. I have kind of a river type point running in this direction and then I have a geometric purple here. Everything is combined with the fabric of my main focus. I used my Baby Lock Sasha coat to quilt. with matching color thread and it makes a perfect bed runner and then instead of making just one table topper in the pattern they have, I decided to put four together to multiply the fabric requirements by four and made a very, very attractive throw . colors from my focal fabric to my decorative fabrics.
I used a Fairy Frost here and it gives it a kind of shine again when quilting with the baby lock sashico machine to give it that hand quilted look and then I just used a plain white on white for the back that way you use that pattern for something More than just table toppers and table runners, you have quilts and bed runners as an option, okay, that was a great idea, okay, let's move on to this pint-sized snowman here. and let me grab, oh, it's over there, okay, we'll walk over here overseas and I guess I'll go ahead and start and tell you a little bit about this.
This is actually a Jim Shore design that I'm in love with. Jim Shore's Christmas I collect Santa's snowmen and angels from him and many of you are familiar with him. These are for, generally, most of these can be made in a four by four hoop. There is a design. You'll notice there are 10 different designs, there is one that combines so you need a larger hoop, so what I did with mine was I decided to just put them in a frame. I have these frames cluttering up my sewing room and I needed to get rid of them. them, so this was the first one I made and they probably work in about 30 minutes or so.
They came together pretty easily and pretty quickly because they're small and I just framed this and then I decided with the three of them that I wanted to make them a little bit bigger so they fit the frame better so on to my dream machine my dream machine from my brother, I just enlarged it and it fit well, so I can take out two of the frames. from my house I made a little ornament here they are perfect for ornaments if you have a charity craft sale or even if you do a craft show or whatever they sell very well and then I decided to make it with one of the tea towels I we've listed, we actually brought three of the tea towels and in this one I just showed that you can make an apron out of a tea towel and then I did a little embroidery here, it's my favorite. uh it's so cute and if you're interested in the pattern or instructions for making this there are so many wonderful videos on YouTube.
In fact, I used Jenny's Missouri Star when she was making her videos for the first time and she tells you how to do it. big to make the pocket and how to cut the angles, the other thing I did was I just wanted to show you that you can use a strip of fabric to enhance a tea towel and then a lot of women were curious about this little cut out here years ago we brought the rules of perfect points where you could do a rounded edge or you could do prairie points and that's what's here, so those are the things that I did.
I'm going to let Linda talk about what she did and then she'll talk to you about the basics of the Log Cabin block. For the basics, I used the three towels we brought for you, the red one, the navy blue one, a snowflake, and this cute little retro scalloped tea towel I made. All three sewn onto this particular tea towel, I pre-washed the red tea towel and the blue because I wasn't sure if it would work, if the red would bleed, if the blue would fade and I don't know if or not. It was the detergent I used or my machine, but I was comparing mine to Anne's.
She also prewashes hers, which is a good idea to do especially with the red, but mine seems to come out a little more faded. I only made one, this is the same. one that Ann made on her apron and then this is the other little one down here in the blue and if I had to do it again I probably wouldn't use these tea towels for the embroidery. I would do something a little more along the lines of what Ann did because in the darker colors my Stitch doesn't stand out as I would have liked. I used a wash away stabilizer and they still turned out really nice and then the next thing I want to talk about for you is this nifty little book we brought on the basics of Log Cabin.
The really nice thing about this book is that it starts from the beginning by showing you how to put the blocks together. There are three different blocks in this book. There is a block of steps from the Palace of Justice. look here there's half a Log Cabin block here and this particular one is the traditional Log Cabin block now in this little book it shows you how when you cut them you put them in the order that you cut them and I also saw a tip from someone That said , use a jelly roll pan to cut and place the cut strips for storage so you know exactly where to go.
The book shows that it has each strip numbered from one to uh, in this case 11. The book has the instructions. for six inch, eight inch, 10 inch and 12 inch blocks and there it shows six inches, eight inches, 10 inches and 12 inches, this is in particular the courthouse steps, it also has yardage calculated for a total of 48 blocks and it says How many yards to buy for the 6, 8, 10 and 12 inch block? There are also photos here of the different block designs. There's one here that I especially liked. I wanted to show that it can have a modern look, it's not just an old fashioned block, although it is very old and on the back it has more designs, designs or how to create the different designs, this is using the traditional Log Cabin block, this is also Using the traditional one, gives a lightning bolt appearance.
This is a half log cabin and it also has a unique look and these are the courthouse steps. I want to show you these are the steps of the courthouse and I have put them, turn them every time down, I put the darkness with the darkness and then the light. with the dark one so you can change the look of your quilt depending on how you place those blocks and you have the white one here or the dark one and you can turn it around. The same goes for the log cabin half, the fireplace is traditionally placed in the center. of the block and that is generally shown with a red color, the turkey red was the traditional one, I chose the orange because it complements the blue and gives it with some geometric prints, it gives it a more modern look, which was my goal by putting them with the white The white gives you will give that strip of rays.
This is another one where you get. You can have the white color or the light color in the center or turn it around and have the dark color in the center. When you do that on this block, your chimney moves. the traditional Log Cabin block again, the chimney in my case is orange instead of red and if you place it this way you can make that long strip of light go this way with the darkness going the other way if you put them from dark to dark get that kind of effect and you can give a completely different look to your quilt by changing the placement of those blocks, one of the things I wanted to tell you is very important and most experienced quilters are very aware of this, but it's worth it repeat it.
When you finish the First Circuit of your block, you must cut it out and make it square. I cut out four blocks and this is what I came up with, as you can see it didn't go all the way to the edge on this strip or that one, this is a block I didn't make any squares on so this is what happens when you don't square those blocks, if you don't, sometimes you'll end up trying to smash them together. I hope you find this useful. I thought it was great even though I have made numerous Log Cabin quilts and this book is very pretty, small, compact and fits perfectly in those crossbody bags okay we have to raffle off a couple of door prizes we are so glad you got them You've joined us today and we're going to give away the door prizes, the winner of our first virtual door prize is Betsy nicewonger, Betsy, here's a pack of little five inch charm squares and you can make some of the quilts here today on some of the projects, so if you get in touch, send us a message with your phone number and the location of the store you would like. to pick it up so it's for Betsy and then the second one such a wonderful quilt pattern and that one is for Carolyn Tobin so if you would both like to send your phone number and the store where you would like to pick it up.
