The Wood Whisperer MPOWER Universal Combination Router Base CRB7

Apr 08, 2024
so we have a quick demo we need to do. There is a company called E

mpower

and they are British from the UK. Here's why he emailed me yesterday because he was still working. Cynthia. I still am. working fine so hey I'll actually show you a close up of some of this stuff but I just want to give you an idea so basically the reason why I think this is really useful when I did my mass exodus from Festool a Couple of years. and I decided to really cut back on the type of Festool tools I had and just keep the real innovations.
the wood whisperer mpower universal combination router base crb7
I put my o F 1400 aside and decided to try to live for a year or two just using just looking. In the reviews, I thought the Bosch plunge

router

set was pretty good, so I wanted to see what it was like to actually force myself to use that tool with its edge guide. Bosch actually has one of the best edges. guides on the market that you can get for that particular

router

and I ended up going back to the 1400 o because I really missed the festival edge guide it's really good it's a creature comfort thing but I really missed having it so I went back to the or F 1400 if I had had this in my possession, maybe I wouldn't have done it and if you look at all the other brands of routers, most of them have pretty inadequate edge guidance, they are just sloppy, there is a lot of slope in the adjustment mechanisms, if there is some kind of micro adjustment now you can still use them, don't get me wrong, it's something where if you put the router bit in position and lock it, that's fine, but generally speaking we're not really going to perform a micro fit very well and their functions on them are pretty limited so that's what I really like about this setup this addresses that with a

universal

router

base

and guide system and they have three different things here we're going to be able to show you, but it all starts with this guy.

More Interesting Facts About,

the wood whisperer mpower universal combination router base crb7...

That's how seven and one is. It does seven different functions, but the main thing I want you to see is that you have two bars that will connect. to your router and to a board and then all kinds of cool things you could do with them. It's cool, it's pretty awesome, so let's go over here and take a look at anyone who doesn't understand what's going on right now. This is an advertisement. but it's also a demo, so we'll be in this area here. Jay and I have something cool to give everyone popsicles. No, so you mean literally no, so here's the starter kit, this is where you're going to start.

It's the

crb7

and that includes this guy plus a few other things here, so let's start at the beginning. You have two posts that say this fits what they actually give as a number to 99% of routers and I'm sure they surveyed. that and it's accurate, yeah, I mean I was looking at their website and they gave me a list of 300, I mean, pretty much everything you could ever know, this audience probably has, this guy will fit in, so how do they do it? these bars here and they give you a couple different sizes to fit the most common slots on the router Jake, can you hand me the DeWalt there?
the wood whisperer mpower universal combination router base crb7
I'm not actually going to have a router for this. I'll just show you the operations. on the

base

mainly because I can't hold anything really heavy, but most router bases, even if they don't, the manufacturer doesn't make a really good edge guide, they usually have these holes here and if you can put posts in there and little wing nuts to lock them in place, now you have an edge guide, that's why you have all these different posts in the kit because you can position them and lock them depending on the size you need, so I think I'll do that.
Finally, here you have an adjustment mechanism that allows you to refine these guys, you know, the height of the spacing, not just the thickness of the bars, but you can position them completely. This side actually has a locking nut there and you could slide it back and forth in case your base is wider or narrower, so it really is quite

universal

. You've got a micro adjustment mechanism here, so once you um you can get the oh F 1400, I feel like we need to at least show it off. a router on this thing because it looks a little weird without one, slide the router in here and of course your part has all this space.
Anyone who has done much routing knows that base size can really get bigger. the functionality, thank you sir, okay, try to do this without causing me dams, hey, Jay, couldn't you come here? Show me how this is done, so let's get that guy there. We already had this set up previously on the 1400, so here we go. Perfect, so it just slides like this, that's how it works. You lock it in now that you're in position and you can see that you have a pretty nice width and this is what I was saying: the size of the base. it's really helpful if you're trying to balance this router on a work surface, that's why they make an oversized base, sometimes they handle bases and things like that because it gives you better counterbalance and better control, and anyone I've seen Matt van der lists old video in which his router tried to dance in his palm.
In his little mini he had a little mini router and he was doing a little thing that he just took for granted, but he could do it with one hand and he just lost control. and the part where he almost bounced off his palm was pretty funny. James said it's like a little baby router slides in somehow, yeah, okay, so once this is here, you've got the main setup done. To continue, you could do all these other functions. Now I will remove the router because I can't. I can't lift this thing with it there. Thanks, Jay, okay, so I want to show you a couple of things before we get into this. other kits here all this cardboard confuses the problem, so you see these two little ones, these two little posts down here.
I love this. If you want to make a mortise or a rabbit, you see these two little metal guides there if you have a router here. Watch what happens as you continue to turn this, eventually it locks it in and as long as you keep a little bit of rotational force there, you can cut a very precise slot or mortise, whatever you need to do, so you have those little adjustments there. and because of all the pre-drilled holes you can move them to multiple locations for four different tasks and if you need to move and don't want a dead spot, you can move your base router back and forth to place the router bit where you need it, so it's pretty helpful, oh, here's one more thing I want to show you in this kit, this guy, have you ever had a situation that we're talking about? about balance before I take these off, if you could put them back on so we don't lose them, there are parts, there are parts with this thing and you don't want to lose them all. these parts, thanks buddy, so here we have this little ball handle, you can take it out and there are things that fit in this place here if you put this little foot from the bottom.
Now imagine we have our router installed correctly, so we're doing some kind of edge treatment here a lot of times when you're on the edge again. The base of the router is narrow, you can tilt it and drop it to the side. This little foot is pretty fantastic because you can approach the edge and place the foot. for the height of your workpiece, lock that suction cup down and now you have full support for this, so talk about how to make a really safe edge profile cut there, you just have all this support and there's really nothing we need close. that door there is no chance of it tipping over with this in place because you have that little adjustable foot which is a really cool feature other things there are others this is the beginning this if you are going to enter the game these other things are useless without this , okay so those are plugins but this is where it all starts this is the CR if this is book1,

crb7

so this guy is really nifty because you can put extra bars on the outside like this and effectively create an alarm tram, if you don't know what that is, that's how you make circles with a router.
Well, basically, place this guy. You would have a small locking screw that goes into the workpiece. Let's imagine that we have a large piece of ply

wood

or something router in this position and once you lock it like this you can make very large circles by rotating from this point. You can also make small circles. They even have a little brass sleeve that goes around a screw and you can put a little pin in it. on the base itself and make very small circles like that so you can make circles with this as well. I mean, that's not something that I personally would do very often, but when you need that functionality it's nice to have a little system that will be able to do that for you, so, like the box says, there are seven things that you can do.
I'm just trying to focus on the things that I know you guys would probably be most interested in, of course, let's not forget that. to mention that you don't want to assume people know this if you were running your router with, say, your fingers on a surface and you have a holding edge guide, you can hold that edge guide down and you'll have a nice plane. reference surfaces to be able to run this thing in a straight line, so I can't, that goes without saying, but some people may not realize that you can also use it for that function, so you have your crb7 and you want to cheat. because who doesn't want pinstripes and spoilers, you guys are probably the worst audience, so here's the one that I think most of you will be intrigued by.
Basically, look at this, this is what will make this type of start to act more like a traditional edge guide, so you can attach this type with these screws to the bottom like this and that will give you a really long reference surface nice, but now you have the number one added benefit. of adjustability built right into this guy, so if you lock this one, you have a little micro adjustment on your router, but now you have a micro adjustment on the position of your guide, which is pretty cool, so once you have it in one of the things that a lot of people say, okay, Jay, if you don't mind, can you put these two screws in those two holes?
So a lot of people when you're doing some kind of mortise or something like that on a narrow workpiece like this. I've gotten pretty good at holding my router in position and applying the right amount of pressure to make my mortises. I mean, we just did that. I don't have a Domino video and it really depends on your ability to keep a You know the router is nice and clean and firm against the edge, so you'll certainly like to acquire the skills to do it, but a good insurance policy is not not only have the edge guide against a surface, but place it many times.
I'll just double tape a piece of scrap to the other side so you basically cradle the work piece tight, that's why they give you another one of these guys, because you can actually put it on the other side, so James got this one for me , thank you. Okay, now you have adjustability on that side, you have three options for where this guy goes, you can hold the screw and now you can use the adjustment function to get this side where it needs to go, so let's just simulate this. So once they are in position and they are snug, but not too tight, you should still be able to slide back and forth.
Now you have no options but to move back and forth and this way you will end up with a perfect mortise. Another interesting feature of these is that they both have these little index marks on there and one might think well, what's the point of an index mark that's not even close to what we're cutting? The reason is that I do know where I need to do it. I start here and I line up my drill bit and I say, well, I need a two inch long mortise, all I have to do is draw a line here that would be my starting point and then outside where I can see it, I can draw my second line . and I say that's my two inch mark and then instead of trying, which I always have trouble with, especially with my Festool router, all those dust collection tubes and stuff that's in the way, you can't see what's happening there, well, you can certainly see. out of work, so this is just an index mark that you can then follow and clearly see when to start and stop, assuming you put the x marks in the proper location, so I think it's a worthwhile upgrade .
I think most people will. I want to get the crb7 plus this thing called MH l F because the letters are funny, they refer to it as a mortise and flute hinge lock. The other thing you could do with this again, it's not something I would do a lot, but you can. Also put a store made scrap screw into the base and use it to cut a flute pattern, as long as it's the same size as the slot you're cutting, basically cut a slot and drop that little scrap piece into the slot you just cut. your second rhythm andyou move as you go, so while you're talking about this, some of the chat members ask you where to find it.
You can go to their website, which is M - power tools comm. a coupon code for $50 off for our audience $50 off for our audience how much does ours cost? Do you know what I would buy for our audience at full price? So if you use Whisper 50, it only works on the e

mpower

ment and power tools website so you can group what it marks. showing you that they have everything there, in fact, there is a scroll bar that has everything that marks talking about this is also on Amazon, so I will put it in our Friday live section of our Amazon store / / / / soThere are several places to buy this stuff, but you'll only get $50 off on their website.
Oh, I see that yeah, that makes sense, it's not an Amazon coupon code, okay, so it's definitely more of a specialty, it's called them. dal trim and molding kit accessory, this one will get some. I would say 25% of this audience because I've surveyed them will be very excited about this if you do a lot of edge banding and I'm struggling with my Dumb Hands here, wait, I'm sorry, do you need help? No, I got it, I got it, I got it, I got it. I need help, but not with this just general mental system. I'm so glad we postponed this demo, uh-oh.
I mean at least I have some shows last week would have been a nightmare so here's the last one. We will show you an accessory from the Jing and Dowell ornament kit. This guy just shows up for me to lock him in place. And? what we're doing now if you imagine that the router bit will fall nice and flush to the surface if it was an edged piece of ply

wood

, say, and it has the edge band glued on many times we glue that edge down and it's proud of the surface because if you don't do that you tend to have pieces that go below the surface so we pride it and then we clean it but it's hard to clean it perfectly without drilling into the main surface here so that's what this guy does effectively raising the height of the base, but giving us this little channel here, this little space to play with the bit can go down by whatever, about a quarter of an inch goes down about a quarter of an inch, you basically set the bit flush. with the surface and then this bearing on the outside prevents it from going too far away.
You have perfect control to be able to trim the edge correctly and it doesn't matter how tall the edge is as long as it is no larger than a quarter of an inch. With the thickness of this extra piece, you've got a lot of room underneath to be able to move this guy back and forth and trim that stuff off nice and clean to the surface, so if you put a lot of bands on the edges, you know, cabinet casings, whatever. It takes a lot of people to have table saw setups for that or you can use a flush trim bit, but a flush trim bit is not always perfect and many times it will leave grooves and if you lose your balance on the router it can be furry this is definitely a specially designed add-on jig so if you do a lot of these things you're going to want this yeah it's Jay he's got the box that they're edging with and the trim kit attachment that's very specialized. but I know some people who do a lot of that will be super excited about something like this so for the most part that's the setup that is M power and like I said if I had this when I was reviewing the Bosch router as my perma router.
You may have made a different decision, yes, again the perfect coupon code is whisper 50 and it will give you 50 $50, I guess you said $50 off the kit, but I don't know if it works on other things. Try it, those in the chat room find out and buy things until they turn it off. I test coupon codes like, does it work?, this works. I use that plugin honey, the honey pot or something, yeah I love it, although 90% most of the time it doesn't do anything for me because I always have the best price Nicole. I shop there at all the best written places. t.j.maxx is fine so yeah thank you of course again.
I want to make sure everyone understands that. That was a paid ad, but we never accept ads that we don't think are worthwhile or that aren't relevant or things that you guys would remember when you came to us and wonder, does it work with ours? Yes, good. It was like they had to ship it because I had to play with this thing to figure out what it does and figure out if it's worth showing to people and I think it's a cool little system.
