We have team coverage tonight. Janae Norman. takes us from near the scene in Brooklyn, some headed to work, others to school, their rush hour train pulled into a Brooklyn station, but then as the doors opened, terrified commuters poured out of the subway car , smoke rose behind them. 3 6th Street and 4th Avenue after several people shot with an explosive device the victims were left lying on the platform and inside the train a fight for survival this man helped one of the victims the entire terrible experience the nightmares of New York the Police say shooter was a passenger on the train initially alone Another face in the crowd seen in a green construction vest muttering to himself New York's new police commissioner describing the moment he unleashed smoke inside that car when The train arrived at the station, the subject put on a gas mask and then opened a canister that was in his bag and the car filled with smoke.
After that he began shooting at the passengers who could not see, could not breathe, One man we spoke to thought the pops he heard were fireworks, it wasn't until the pops stopped, as I saw on the floor, that there was a lot of blood and I realized that fireworks can't do that much damage. There had to be shots. There are people literally on top of each other, crowding each other trying to get out of the way so as not to be seen. They are just panicking, soon commuters were running towards the station and running out into the street.
I saw a couple of people come out and they just fell in the middle of the street. You know that they are? They were all shot. I had never seen anything. like this and it was shocking and terrifying and at the same time wondering if the gunman is here or not, Governor Holcol warned that yes, the shooter was still out there, this person is dangerous, they are asking people to be very alert and alert , this is an active shooter situation the quiet residential neighborhood now ground zero for a massive manhunt an army of law enforcement officers trying to piece together clues this is one of the subway stations the center of the investigation and right next door a pizzeria where the Investigators are checking to see if there is any surveillance camera that can help in the investigation, they are checking all the cameras in the neighborhood, but surprisingly New York officials say that the camera inside the subway station is not working properly, but the Police found the shooter's backpack there, multiple smoke devices and a bag of commercial grade fireworks, but no live explosives, they also recovered a .38 caliber handgun with three magazines extended, one was empty on the floor, but one was in the gun.
It had gotten stuck and authorities believe that stopped the commotion and saved lives, so maybe it was done by some quick-thinking subway workers. who immediately moved another train out of the station and I must also give credit to the mta workers who had the foresight to immediately move a train that was on the platform out of the station so that it could take people to a safe place that was smart to think that ten people were shot. Authorities say five were in critical condition, but today we learned that all have been stabilized. Authorities believe everyone will survive.
A total of 19 victims in hospital tonight. There are a variety of other smoke inhalation injuries. to the shrapnel to the panic over the incident the neighborhood the shaken classrooms told them to shelter in place I spoke with Selma Castro who ran to her son's school what goes through your mind when you know that your son was going by train to school right at the time this happened oh I guess Gary because like 10 minutes ago he was on the train so he literally got to school. Yes, 10 minutes. Yes, before everything happened. Yes, President Biden thanks first responders.
We are grateful for all the first responders who went into action, including the civilians, the civilians who didn't. They did not hesitate to help their fellow travelers and tried to protect him. Also found was a liquid that we believe to be gasoline and a bag containing consumer fireworks and a hobby fuse for approximately one hour. Detectives located a U-Haul van in Brooklyn that we believe is related to the suspect.
At this time we still do not know the suspect's motivation. Clearly, this individual boarded the train and intended to commit violent acts. We are conducting a

Witnesses claim the mail was opened and two smoke grenades were thrown at them. On the subway floor he brandishes a 9 millimeter Glock pistol, then fired that weapon at least 33 times, striking 10 people, the man then fled the scene and detectives are actively trying to determine his whereabouts. At that scene he recovered a nine-millimeter Glock 17 pistol, three glocks extended. type magazines one was still in the gun one under a seat and another in a backpack we had 33 discharge casings 15 bullets five bullet fragments two detonated smoke grenades two unexploded smoke grenades an ax a black trash can a style type black milk tire rolling cart gasoline and a u-haul key the u-haul key at the scene led us to the recovery of a u-haul van recently in Brooklyn the man we believe is the tenant of this u -haul in philadelphia is a 62 year old frank r james man with addresses in wisconsin and philadelphia.
We are trying to locate him to determine his connection to the subway shooting, if any. The two crime scenes, the subway and the van, are very active and are still being processed. asking anyone with information, cell phone video, witness information or anyone who can identify the perpetrator or the renter of this vehicle to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-577-tips. There is a 50,000 reward right now 25,000 from the nyc police foundation 12,500 from the mta and 12,500 from the twa local 100 just want to assure everyone that we at the nypd have all our resources working on this together with our partners at the fbi and the atf to find this perpetrator with I would like to turn it over to Mike Driscoll, Mr.
Mayor, we are ready to welcome you, thank you, commissioner and chief, as we indicated that today was a difficult day for New York and days like these areplanned all too often in cities around the world. America, as mentioned this morning, we witnessed an act of violence and evil in the heart of Brooklyn, where a shooter attacked the show. We summoned business people to the 36th Street station. We watched a quiet Tuesday morning turn the M train into a war zone. A smoke bomb was detonated and multiple gunshots were heard. We witnessed 20 people who had been injured so far as mentioned and thanks to the quick thinking of the MTA crew and the bravery and cooperation of the passengers lives were saved and then thanks to our first responders, the injured were quickly taken to area hospitals and all are expected to recover.
You know, I've been realistic and forthright about my commitment to protecting public safety. I stand by it and will continue to do everything in my power to condemn the rivers that feed the sea of miners, but this is not just a New York City problem, this rage, this violence, these guns, these relentless shooters are an American problem and it will take all levels of government to solve it, it will take the entire nation to speak up and Reject the cult of death that has taken root in this nation. A cult that allows innocence to be sacrificed daily.
A country where buying weapons of mass destruction is as easy as picking up a piece of plywood or a ferry. A country where there are more guns than people, there are more than 400 million guns in this country alone, the firearm homicide rate in the United States is 26 times higher than that of other high-income countries where more than 100 people die from of gun violence every day guns are the leading cause of death for American children and teens like the 16-year-old baby we lost in the bronze medal, from schools in Colorado Sandy Hook and Virginia to music festivals in Las Vegas, nightclubs in Orlando, movie theaters and yoga classes across the country, these killers have used weapons of mass destruction to massacre innocent people, they do not control armies or military forces, but these individual killers terrorize our nation.
I have often said that this city is not going to adapt to dysfunction. Ending gun violence means changing gun laws. We can't clean up a flood, but the water is there. It keeps coming to the basement and we will never be able to stop the killings, but we can't stop the guns, to be clear, we will not hand over our city to divine wrangling and we will not hand over all of America to this death cult. The sea of violence comes from many. rivers we must condemn every river that feeds the larger crisis that is my life's work this administration and this police department I will not stop until the peace we deserve becomes the reality we experience you have my word as a former police officer, a fellow new yorker and its mayor and we will put an end to this epidemic and that will capture the individual responsible for today's attack, we will capture him and prosecute him to the fullest extent of the law, thank you nypd fdny, our first responders, the collaboration of the federal government, the state and city agencies thank you Mr.
Mayor I would like to turn it over to the Assistant Special Agent in Charge of the FBI New York Office Michael Driscoll Thank you Commissioner I want to begin by expressing our hopes and prayers that the victims of this event enjoy a speedy recovery , are our main focus right now. I also want to echo the appreciation for the partnership with the NYPD, the ATF and all partners who are contributing to this investigation at this time, the NYPD FBI Joint Terrorism Task Force is fully committed to this investigation by providing assistance through manpower, technical assistance and basically anything we can offer, we expect the process to be a long one as we gather all possible information to track down all possible leads and I encourage you, as I mentioned above , to contact the NYPD Tip Line at 1-800-577-tips and would also frequently add the case to many of our current investigations.
Everyone has a cell phone in their pocket. There are many videos available if you have digital information. You would like to share with us in connection with this investigation, please visit fbi.gov Brooklyn shooting where you can upload that information, so we are seeking the help of the public that you heard mentioned before on a name of possible videos of interest that would be particularly helpful or any other. additional witnesses who have not yet come forward who may provide information that may assist in this investigation, so thank you for your participation and I thank everyone for their cooperation in the course of the investigation.
Thanks, we're not sure where he went at this time. subject to investigation, we have a number of resources that are combing on foot and doing video surveys, as well as to determine where he went. Have you posted videos online talking about being invictus? The mayor's mental health program. Can you talk to us about this? Based on some preliminary information, there are some posts possibly related to our person of interest where he mentions homeless people, he mentions New York and he mentions Mayor Adams and as a result of that, in an abundance of caution, we are going to beef up the security details of the mirror, so just to be clear, this person, Frank James, is not the person of interest that is in custody at this time, we do not have anyone in custody at this time, no, we are looking for Frank James, we know that he rented this van U-Haul, the key to that one.
The u-haul van was found at the crime scene on the subway if Mr. James had made those social media posts we're reviewing, but yeah, right, can you believe he was the one on the train? That's right, we are looking to determine if it has any connection to the train that we know that Mr. James rented that transport truck in Philadelphia Rockefeller made those threats that the commissioner was talking about online so we don't call them threats he made some concerning posts or someone made some worrying posts that we can't attribute to that individual yet that's not an investigation but again with great caution we're going to reinforce the mayor's security team that's all rocco daily news do you have a commission?
Do you have any connection? and any connection with that subway station that is subject to investigation, we do not have that information yet, do you have a criminal record? Mr. James is just one person of interest that we know right now, that he rented that U-Haul van in Philadelphia. The keys to that truck were found in the subway. In our shooters' possessions, we do not know at this time if Mr. James has any connection to the metro which is still under investigation. Chief essay. Do you have what they call solid DNA evidence from the crime scene?
Event: The crime scene is still being processed now the van. is being processed and the subway crime scene is being processed, but it's too early now to tell the city. Can you explain where all this was? I was close? And you also said that you are investigating these videos, but can you confirm that? was it him in the video or the people who know we're just trying to make that connection in the video, the youtube videos and the videos there, there's a guy who posted there, frank james, we're still working to see if that's our person who rented the video and where they were all located. uh King's Highway in Brooklyn, which intersection 30 West 4th and King's Highway there were general issues of concern and I don't want to go into too much detail about the mayor's security detail that we're doing. it's just to be sure complaints about homeless people complaints about new york nothing in general sorry just general comments that caused us some concern and are subject to investigation at this time why were there no surveillance cameras working at the station why?
The police radios did not work at the station and to what extent did those factors hinder this investigation? Yes, we know that there were three seasons where the video did not work. We're still investigating that to see why or how there was, uh, if it was a mechanical problem electrical problem why those videos weren't posted there were no problems with the police radios one of the first officers on the scene said his radio didn't. was working and he told one of the teenagers who were there too yes so the patrol officers would work Upper side if you will in the patrol precincts when they come down from the station they have to change frequencies it's uhf versus vhf, so if they don't change the radio to the vhf frequency, they won't be able to broadcast in the subway station, so it's a user error, it wasn't a problem with actual Bloomberg radio news, how many officers are assigned to the 36th Street station and whether there were any officers at the station, so we typically do not assign officers to subway station officers. patrol on a rotating basis ride trains leave patrol stations precinct patrol officers stop get off do station inspections we've been doing that since January so that station was patrolled several times today there were no officers present at the station at the time of the shooting but It had been patrolled several times on this calendar date before the shooting in the early hours of the morning Thank you Question What do we know about Mr.
James and his local ties to New York City Timmy Do we know Mr. James? Mr. James has addresses in Wisconsin and Philadelphia and even New York he is still under investigation, but at this time he is only a person of interest. In this case we know the shooter entered the station on King's Highway, so we're asking for anyone who knows. from King's Highway to 35th Street, eight stops from him, anyone who sees him with any information, call crimestoppers. We literally have hundreds of detectives in the field right now reviewing video at train stations, exits, vehicle recovery sites, so we're hoping to have clearer pictures of who we think the shooter is CNN on the gun that was recovered has not been traced at all to Mr.
James and is there any chance of that or how complicated the same person holding the trigger is today in terms of pulling the trigger that is still under investigation as far as the firearm we know that it is not part of a multiple cell we know it is not stolen we are working with our partners at the atf to trace it to the point of sale and then move forward About that gun, last question, your physical description of James does not match the descriptions which were already published again today. As I said, two smoke grenades were thrown.
We have various height descriptions. I gave the description of the man with the vest. We are reviewing all possible leads on our person of interest. I think if you look at our social networks you will see two photos of the question of interest. Alright, thank you very much and just to summarize, you have been listening to a live press conference regarding a person of interest involved in the shooting at the Brooklyn subway station this morning, around rush hour at 8:30 . From the beginning, the NYPD commissioner said we're really fortunate that this wasn't significantly worse than it is, we also heard the mayor there say we're going to catch him and prosecute him to the fullest extent of the law, talked about how we have more guns than people in this country, there is now a 50,000 reward for any information leading to an arrest, we also heard from the police commissioner that they are now beefing up the mayor's security team to get more information on this .
We want to go to Janae Norman, who joins us now lives in Brooklyn. Janae, we were all listening to that. press conference with the latest on the search for that subway shooter, they named that person of interest as frank r james, tell us what we know about him, well lindsay, we know that right now they say they have several detectives actively looking for him, they say . that they know he has residences or addresses at least in wisconsin and they are looking for him but they say what helped connect him was a u-haul key found at the scene at the subway station here less than a block from where I'm standing, that connected them to the u-haul truck that was found at another location not far from here in Brooklyn and they believe this person of interest is the one who rented the u-haul van, that's how we were able to track and locate this person of interest. interest, but Lindsay what really caught my attention at that press conference was what you just mentioned before, how officials say this could have been much worse and that this individual was prepared to do harm when they say they found a backpack At the scene we already learned later today that they also recovered a 38 caliber pistol with three magazines extended, one empty on the floor, one in the weapon that had been jammed and one under a seat in the subway but they told us more that the officers found. at the scene, including two smoke grenades, two morethat had not been detonated, 33 bullet casings fired.
I was so surprised by that Lindsay that they said this guy shot 33 times and hit at least 10 people. Fortunately, incredibly, no one. He is expected to have minor life-threatening injuries and everyone is expected to recover, but what they are telling us, what detectives are telling us they were able to find on this individual, it seems like this could have been much worse, a Of those extended magazines in the gun they recovered they say it was jammed and that Lindsay is what officials tell us could have prevented this from being much worse and they say he also had an ax, in addition to those other items that you mentioned, Investigators also talked about how the security cameras in the subway station malfunctioned during this press conference, what do we know about that?
Well, Lindsay told us today that when they realized that those security cameras at the 36th Street subway station weren't working, they discovered that they hadn't been sabotaged, they were just malfunctioning, but we saw the police here before , in a police room right outside the subway entrance, we saw them hanging around that area this morning, not long after this happened, and we knew they were looking. for the surveillance video now Lindsay these days we expect there to be cameras in a lot of places especially here in New York City right outside the subway station here's a deli there's a bagel shop there's that pizza place I mentioned another cafeteria there a school here right behind our cameras all of which have surveillance cameras but officials tell us they were able to get a picture of that suspect from a video taken by someone who was at the scene and we've seen some of those scary, scary things.
Videos of what people who were in the subway car on the platform saw unfold this morning, one of those passersby who decided to take out his phone and take a video captured the suspect on video and was able to help bring that image to the police, which they helped circulate and now they are trying to use it to find him and of course we heard several officials as they approached the podium today appealing to the public that any type of digital evidence, any type of cell phone video that they may have, would they are requesting. saying nothing is too small or insignificant janae norman thank you very much for your reporting in the field all day and now for more information on the investigation aaron koterski from abc joins us now also live from the scene where he has also been since this tomorrow erin We found out about the U-Haul connected to the person of interest, of course we found out about that key, but what led police to that U-Haul was a credit card that was found here at the scene, Lindsay .that credit card was picked up on the subway platform along with all those other items and authorities determined that the credit card had been used to rent a u-haul. that u-haul was discovered parked here in Brooklyn about four miles from the scene along King's Highway there is a subway stop on the n train about four blocks from where the car was parked and it is believed that that is where the suspect boarded the train, so I think that's how police are connecting this person of interest now trying to determine if he's in fact the shooter and Erin, what do we know about the status of the victims at this point?
Fortunately, everyone is alive and when you hear about smoke grenades, 33 shots fired and 10 people suffering from gunshot wounds, your mind goes to the worst. but fortunately we were told that all the people who were shot are expected to survive. Five were shot and seriously injured, but today we were told that all of those critical patients had been stabilized, so it looks like they are all going to recover. non life threatening injuries what a blessing and what has been described as could have been much worse aaron koterski our thanks to you and now we would like to bring on a new york city councilwoman shahana hanif she joins us now Your neighbors in the Brooklyn neighborhood where today's shooting took place, Councilman, we thank you very much for joining us in what we know is a difficult time.
I understand that you have been in close contact with the schools closest to the scene of today's attack. How are the teachers and students coping thank you very much lindsay for having me tonight and it has been a tragic day and my team and I, in coordination with my fellow council member alexa villas, my district is just miles from the 36th street station and we have constituents neighbors students families that are devastated and traumatized, so my top priority with our team was to consult with every school in the district, some of the schools were under some type of shelter and place, as mentioned for some, if not the Most of us, day to day and our job as board members, and especially during crises and tragic times, is to be a resource, a proactive resource to make our communities feel safe and to make sure that every person, and especially our students , be taken into account and be right.
Now I like that all New Yorkers are waiting for updates and we will continue to share detailed information as we deliver it to our constituents and how their constituents are reacting to today's events. traumatized, traumatized, but they also know that I want to improve the ways. in which Brooklyn stepped forward. What I saw in the videos I watched several times is travelers helping each other. Transportation workers were ready to remove travelers onto the adjacent R train on the other side of the station. Neighbors came to help neighbors. I also know that there was a police officer on the scene at the station whose radio was not working and the travelers called 911 for help, and while we are traumatized and thinking about what security will be like this week as we get to As we work while we come to school, we are also people who will continue to take care of each other while responding to security and ensuring that every neighbor in the city is safe and not abandoned, and so much so that I am sure that, in hindsight, people will be taking a look to all the flaws between that police officer's radio as well as the security cameras, but even before today's mass shooting there were concerns about an increase in violence and crime in this city and beyond, so far this year. year, murders have increased up to 26 percent. compared to 2020.
How has this impacted your district in particular? We now have Brooklynites who are absolutely aware and alert and recognize that more policing is not the way we approach safety and particularly public safety in the city, even before today. Yorkers felt unsafe and from the beginning of Covid to the beginning of this year, the city's Asian American neighbors have been violently affected by incidents in our subways, in our neighborhoods, so right now we should really think about what to address. It means gun violence and putting all hands on deck for our elected officials to address this immediately, and you know, my neighbors are concerned because adding a thousand more police officers to the subway stations has not significantly reduced the attacks that we are seeing in the stations, so it is something that we should ask ourselves as New Yorkers: what are the tools that are presented to us?, what real investments are coming to our neighborhoods, to reduce violence, remove guns from our streets and Recognizing that policing will not be the way we address this, we know that policing is a response to crime but not a means of prevention and on that point today the governor said she is committing the state's resources to fighting crime. siege of In your opinion, what needs to be done right at this time, as mentioned, reinforcing our subway stations with police is not the answer and making real investments, particularly as a council member, as my colleagues and I respond to the budget and we come up with a budget that adequately and equitably meets the needs of our neighbors in housing, health care and education to address the root causes of crime in our city is my top priority so now we know that this is a complex topic.
It is not a simple problem that has a simple solution, but again I want to reiterate that policing is not our way and my council colleagues and I are committed to ensuring that our neighborhoods are safe for all New Yorkers, New York City Council Member York, Shahana Hanif. Thank you very much for her time and for joining us tonight. Thank you very much Lindsay. The NYPD is increasing its forces and is getting help from the FBI. Although at this point it appears the shooter acted alone, ammunition found at the scene points to plans for a deadly attack. attack there is also serious concern around the extensive amount of planning on the part of the suspect abc chief justice correspondent pierre thomas has more tonight police are approaching this u-haul vehicle and they want to know if it is connected to The New York subway shooter who opened fire on defenseless commuters during the morning rush hour, federal authorities have been warning for months about so-called lone wolves, people with all kinds of problems who may be mentally unstable and who they act violently.
A police bulletin obtained by ABC News calls this a coordinated attack, believing it was clearly planned, but the motive remains unclear. Authorities have not confirmed whether there were accomplices. What is clear according to a senior law enforcement official is that the shooter came prepared and fired indiscriminately into the smoke, apparently intending to kill as many people as possible. Today's shooting comes amid a spike in crime in many major cities. In New York City, subway crime is up more than 52 percent and overall crime is up more than 36 percent compared to this time in the year. citywide last year, last week, a 16-year-old girl was shot and killed while walking home. school in january two new york police officers were killed while responding to a domestic dispute today governor kathy hokel says new yorkers are tired of rising crime people across new york state support the people of the city this community and we say There are no more local and federal law enforcement officials examining evidence for possible fingerprints on the recovered gun and other items discovered at the scene and they are reviewing videos of witnesses and businesses surrounding areas looking for anything that points to a suspect of key interest. tonight that u-haul was linked to the suspect and they are focusing on a credit card found at the scene lindsey pierre thank you of course a lot of interest in that u-haul truck as the Russian bombing of Ukraine continues across the country officials have accused the russian military of using chemical weapons as part of their assault the pentagon says they are taking the threat seriously but have yet to confirm these new claims of chemical warfare abc's james longman is again key for us tonight as the Russian-backed forces relentlessly pummel towns in eastern Ukraine officials are investigating reports of the possible use of a chemical agent in an attack on Mariupol a Ukrainian right-wing battalion reports that a drone dropped a poisonous substance of unknown origin that it claims , could not be independently verified in part because following heavy fighting in the city, three of its members reportedly fell ill, but are not said to have been seriously injured.
The United States says it is closely monitoring the reports. We are not in a position to confirm anything. I don't think the Ukrainians either. We had credible information that Russian forces could use a variety of riot control agents, including tear gas mixed with chemical agents that would cause stronger symptoms, to weaken and incapacitate entrenched Ukrainian combatants and civilians. A spokesman for Russian-backed rebels fighting in the region. Today they denied that they used chemical weapons in Mariupol, but yesterday that same spokesman said on Russian television that his forces should use chemical weapons against Ukrainian fighters to raise smoke for the moles as his troops prepare for a new offensive in the east. from Ukraine.
President Putin was in Russia's Far East today met with the leader of Belarus, Alexander Lukashenko. inflation

at a staggering 8.5 percent Families across the country are reeling from the fastest price rise since the Reagan administration.
People are paying $325 a month more now compared to a year ago to buy the same goods and services. Factors driving price increases include everything from the Russian invasion of Ukraine to supply. The problems of the chain of record gasoline prices are also a huge factor in inflation and in an effort to reduce them, President Biden announced an emergency waiver to allow some gas stations to sell a higher blend of ethanol gas called e-15 during the summer. This is what a15 means. It's about 10 cents a gallon cheaper than e-10, but it won't solve all of our problems, but it will help some people and I'm committed to doing everything I can to help.
Thanks to María for that and when we return abroad. China's coveted zero policy puts 25 million people on lockdown in Shanghai tonight, many struggling for food and essentials. We now turn to the controversial pastime of civil war reenactments which have actually gained popularity since the racial reckoning protests of 2020 and the removal of Confederate statues and memorials for some of these reenactments are our way of paying tribute to American history and to others is a shocking and insensitive reminder of America's dark past. ABC News Senior National Correspondent Steve Osinsami takes a look. It's a Sunday afternoon in the middle of home sweet Alabama and they're here fighting the civil war.
It's almost every weekend. In reality, in small towns, mainly throughout the South, the guns are real, but the bullets and the dead don't come as early as dinner. On Thursdays, these families will leave their modern lives and cell phones behind to become weekend actors in the theater of the civil war, and they say they haven't seen people so interested in years. Yesterday they were lined up from here on the corner to the end of the road. and i walked up the hill to the flag yesterday those things are heavy tonya haisley is a camp cook and reenactor at the battle of janney furnace where the south loses the fight we have to keep the water running so we can clean the weapons wash the dishes she and her The children are here living in cold tents under the shadow of the Confederate flag.
She says she wants America to hear that they are not racist. Some people think we are racist for doing this. She had people on the north side. My mom is from Maine. my dad is from the south so i had people on the north side die. I had people on the south side that died. Jason Sumner is a high school social studies teacher and he says he's going to wear the uniform for six more events this spring alone and it's an offensive story, but it's like I tell my students that it's totally fine for the story to be offensive because it's not. , we will not develop that emotional connection with the past and we will not learn from it. the south lost, why are we celebrating this? because it is still history, winning or losing is still history, they are still things we must remember to keep our history alive.
They believe some white Americans just now need to remember their Civil War history after watching the street protests nearly two years ago and say they can certainly understand how the killing of George Floyd by a white Minneapolis police officer changed the lens that Americans Black Americans in particular are using it to look back at our country's racial history, but they tell us they are still bothered by seeing protesters tear down Civil War monuments. a certain group of people in this country who feel that because their sensibilities might be offended, everything has to change to accommodate that and the world plan just doesn't work that way. chris reeve from georgia is new to this old world, he says he just started traveling to see civil war reenactments after the summer of protests when it all happened in 2020.
I think what really drove me to want to go to this reenactment is trying to better help people understand the story that he has become a star in these circles and that he represents. The miles sharing performances you record online tell me how that happened, so how did the protest get you more involved? and everything else was like they spat in my face, um, because I looked at it like these things have been around for so many years, why are we suddenly getting mixed up with history that's already been written? Have you been called a racist?
Yeah, so you're used to being called a racist. Yes, I mean me and my family. They look at us badly wherever we go. I think one city where we got a lot of attention was Selma Alabama. There is a good reason that there are people in Selma who might find it a little racist to have a civil war reenactment in their town and this will show a little in the people who say they want to honor their civil war history. , the parts of the past that were left aside This is also history that needs to be remembered the state troopers and sheriff's deputies who used their batons to seriously injure hundreds of protesters who in 1965 marched for the right to vote in selma the bloody scenes were broadcast into American living rooms and convinced this country to change its laws, we asked all those who pose as Civil War soldiers how they explain to their black friends, for example, that this is not a celebration of the slavery and racial oppression.
The answers are usually the same, but you also have to understand. who grew up in completely different times and saw things that we considered both abhorrent and necessary at the time and what is truly frightening was seen as socially acceptable martin o'toole is a spokesperson for the children of confederate veterans in which his group is suing in some cases to prevent cities from removing civil war monuments from public places. He says it should be perfectly acceptable for people in the South to celebrate the confederacy on the other side of that coin. I'm trying to imagine what my life would have been like if I was alive at that time, you know, I certainly couldn't talk to you in this environment, it's just hard for people to say, you know, let's celebrate slavery.
I don't see any celebration of slavery today, do you? Seeing more interest in their members now than five years ago, you would see that there is more passion because they feel attacked and tell us that they are the most uniquely evil and evil people out there. If we have ever lived on the planet, we are told that the Confederate experience was just a veil of tears for almost everyone concerned, certainly for all black people and things like that, but for many the confederacy was not so good for black people in the United States. Joined. Still today it is the very definition of white supremacy.
Richard Rose is president of the Atlanta chapter of the NAACP and says that while we no longer have armies pointing at each other, there are still some people throughout the South who have been fighting in the civil war. since it ended more than 150 years ago it is a cold war it is a cold war he is one of the black leaders trying to remove the largest confederate monument in the United States the giant carvings of three confederate generals on Stone Mountain east of Atlanta the monuments that the carbon should be completely covered and destroyed, they are not works of art and they are not historical, completely covered with destroyed sandpaper, sandblasted dynamite, where most of these monuments were erected long after the civil war, much After the Civil War, Snow Mountain, for example, wasn't really finished until 1972.
And many of them were behind civil rights gangs, but the man who is the president of Stone Mountain, who is also African American, says that clearing the mountain is a bad idea and he says state lawmakers will never allow this to happen. The problem with carbon removal is that carbon won't change people. The only thing that will change people is a change of mind. It's what we hear in this park in Alabama where actors fire their cannons and fake bullets in the name of history near the entrance. There is now a Civil War monument to Confederate Major John Pelham, who led the lost fight, which is re-enacted here every year.
He used to be here on this busy road about 20 miles away in Anniston, Alabama, but today most of the people in that town are black. and they moved the monument to this imaginary battlefield less than three months after george floyd was killed in the inscription that says that major pelham was brave and loved today the young reenactor who put it up says the crowd grew even larger when the statue moved I would say it because they are seeing the meaning they want to transmit to their children. Why these monuments, you know, should endure. The war he is waging is not just false.
The battle here is for culture, history, truth andthe people who fight is very real they don't do this in germany they don't do it there are no statues of hitler uh and yet we remember we know what the history was we know what the history is and none of this has to do with the history that the country celebrates a failed insurrection against himself and that's what all these re-enactments do. A fascinating discussion. Former Marine Trevor Reed appeared remotely from a Russian prison camp appealing a nine-year sentence for assaulting a police officer, a crime he and the US government say. Non-committee Reid seen for the first time since a hunger strike landed him in the hospital. We saw some photos, a video of a tweet this morning of him in court.
It was on video and it looks terrible and we're really worried. Because he really does look thin, he just doesn't look like himself, the three-judge panel was supposed to hear his appeal. Instead, Reed's case has been sent back to a lower court, meaning the 30-year-old man will remain in Russian custody for the foreseeable future Sunday afternoon. Welcome back and now to the pandemic as cases of Omicron ba2 subvariant are rising in the US, CDC says today now accounting for most new cases and more than 90 percent in the Northeast and in china, shanghai's 25 million residents are still on lockdown as the country's commercial hub is paralyzed once again by a major omicron surge as residents struggle with renewed restrictions, the city's lockdown is also having a wide impact. in the global economy. ABC's Brick Clinic reports tonight from Hong Kong two years into the pandemic and China is facing its worst outbreak, but the streets of Shanghai are eerily empty as 25 million residents are forced to. remain in strict lockdown with no end in sight, even though no deaths have been reported, the government has now been forced to deliver groceries to some of its residents, so my supplies are extremely scarce.
I still have some cereals left, not much, but some fruits, I only have this lemon. The severe restrictions are testing the social stability of patients and, as experts warn, damaging China's economy and the global supply chain. We are seeing closures within the region that we know could cause delays. It's something we're monitoring closely back in March when Omicron snuck into this financial trade. and shipping capital Shanghai, once seen as China's shining model of greed control, had promised not to lock down, but as cases rose, the Chinese government's covert zero-tolerance approach returned to the city. in full force at night, frustrated residents yelling at their neighbors. between complexes sounding a summons for residents to get tested, Shanghai resident Jamie Penoza sent this video to ABC News of her entire apartment complex leaving for the first time in days as she was about to climb into bed , we just had to wait for a speaker to arrive at full volume. outside our window saying everyone get down right now get tested right now jamie describing the surreal scenes on his normally bustling street everyone just gliding very calmly over there which felt very apocalyptic and strange jamie finishing his test sees a bus waiting and my heart sank, we all knew those were the buses coming to take people to the central quarantine sites in China.
Each positive case must be isolated in a government facility or hospital. You can't stay at home. There are no showers here and we are not here. is allowed to receive packages from the outside world in this viral video from a Shanghai hospital from before lockdown, a ward full of young children cry separated from their parents after testing positive for covid, the opera, promptingauthorities will relax some rules that the US state department is now enforcing advise Americans to reconsider traveling to China order some consulate employees to leave the US flag arbitrary enforcement measures, including the risk that parents and children be separated China responded by calling its covert policies effective and science-based and criticizing what it described as baseless accusations from the US.
But after this nearly two-week lockdown, the number of positive infections in the city still exceeds 26,000, with only a thousand of those showing symptoms and no hidden deaths yet reported, there are signs that it is becoming increasingly difficult to implement that policy in the social sphere. The economic cost is rising rapidly and exponentially The economic strain evident with truckers prevented from delivering goods to major shipping ports in Shanghai The latest blockage in the global supply chain affecting US companies from Apple to Tesla while factories are unable to are manned, experts warn that continued lockdowns could lead to long-term damage.
We know that Shanghai contributes about a quarter of China's GDP, but when other countries learn to coexist with the virus, China's export sector will be affected, so you are saying it could affect China's global competitiveness. Absolutely, the large southern port city of Guangzhou immediately ordered mass testing of its 18 million residents after detecting just three positive cases last Friday. The response was harsh, but China maintains the strategy. Analysts predict China won't adopt America's Coexisting with the Virus mentality until 2023 in hopes of helping President Xi Jinping win an unprecedented third term this week Shanghai began easing some restrictions in low-risk areas, but with the warning that lockdowns may be re-implemented if cases are detected again. a person can test positive and that only brings the score back to zero.
Our thanks to Britt because April is Autism Acceptance Month and with more than seven million people in the United States on the autism spectrum, this is a time to celebrate differences and promote inclusion. Raise awareness and help eliminate the stigma associated with the autism community. Join us now she is a children's advocate and civil rights attorney. Ariva Martin, founder and president of the special needs network. One of the nation's largest disability health and social justice nonprofit organizations. Thank you very much for joining. We, last year, the Autism Society of America announced its change in terminology from Autism Awareness Month to Autism Acceptance Month.
Tell us why that's important and what the new term symbolizes. Yes, Lindsay, that's very important because one of the things we want to do in the autism community. is to eliminate the stigma and because we want to promote awareness we also want to promote inclusion and acceptance we want the world to know and Americans in particular to know that people with autism are like you and me, they are people who have feelings that they love your loved ones. Family members want jobs they enjoy and that are fun in the community and we want people to accept them for who they are, so the name change was really about changing the attitude we have towards people living with autism and really make their lives easier.
Being integrated into your workplaces as well as the community and your non-profit, Special Needs Network addresses the crisis of people living with disabilities in underserved communities, what would you say are some of the biggest challenges? ? Yes, the biggest challenges, unfortunately, are structural. racism There was a report on Wednesday last year or at the end of 2020 that talked about the structural racism that families, particularly Black and Brown families, face in terms of getting both diagnostic testing and access to services, so that the barriers that many black families face. Particular families that were part of this study reported that they went to doctors' offices and the doctors did not believe them when they told them what they witnessed regarding their children and the milestones that their children were missing. fulfilling.
The prejudices that people had about black and brown children, what initiatives do you currently have in place to help those students feel more welcome in society? You know one of the things we do at the special needs network is we try to give parents the resources they need. We have an annual conference every This year is coming up on April 30, when we bring together the best and most skilled special education scientists, doctors, professionals, attorneys to give parents the information they need to help them navigate these complex systems of care. and then we try to hug the parents and let them know that they are not alone, that there are resources available to them, and that they are part of a really important and special community.
You have been quite candid about the fears you have as a mother of a black son on the spectrum back in 2020 you wrote an article titled My Son is Black and Living with Autism How Do I Protect Him from Police Brutality? Share with us some of those concerns and what advice you could give to parents who find themselves in a similar situation. Situation, yes we know, as black parents we have to give the word to our children, especially our black children, and it is about how they should behave if they are stopped by the police and, unfortunately, when you have a child like my son Marty who has a disability that conversation is even more intense because you always worry that a police officer might call your son by name like my son he knows his name and knows how to respond but if a stranger calls him and he doesn't respond quickly I'm quite concerned that the police officer might think that's non-compliance, he might think that my son is being belligerent or obstructive, so we need to make sure that the police officers know what some of the signs and symptoms are and what it looks like. . living with autism and at the same time we have to educate our children on how to interact with authorities and move on to covet now for a moment an autism society report revealed that people with intellectual disabilities were almost six times more likely to die from covet 19.
Access to early diagnosis and intervention slowed at an alarming rate, as you know, during the pandemic, do you think we will ever truly know the huge impact Kobet had on this population? I don't believe it. don't even measure the mental health issues that people with developmental disabilities experience, the isolation, the loss of their routines, the loss of services, we have thousands and thousands of children, families that we are trying to help, experienced a lot of regression during this period, so Part of what we're going to do at this conference on April 30 is help families understand what their legal rights are and how to recover some of those services that were lost and ultimately get as community, what can we do to try to help? fostering these conversations about inclusion and acceptance for people who live on the spectrum lindsay by doing exactly what you're doing today interviewing people like me talking to everyday people uh meeting those people in your own family in your own community that may be raising a child or living with someone with autism, so this is the month we promote acceptance and awareness and I said go give a big hug to someone you know who lives with autism.
Okay, Ariva Martin, founder and president of the special needs network, thank you very much for joining us on this very important issue, thank you for bearing with me and before we leave tonight the images of the day that show that we are still strong members of the New York Police York gathered at the scene of the Brooklyn subway shooting, New York City firefighters arrive at the scene in the Sunset Park neighborhood. heading into danger to help his fellow New Yorkers in times of crisis and that is our program for this hour. I saw a couple of people come out and they just fell in the middle of the street. Do you know what they did? They were all shot. I had never seen anything like it. this and it was shocking and terrifying and at the same time wondering if the gunman is here or not, Governor Hogel warned that yes, the shooter was still out there, this person is dangerous, they are asking people to be very alert and alert , this is an active shooter situation the quiet residential neighborhood now ground zero for a massive manhunt an army of law enforcement officers trying to piece together clues this is one of the subway stations the center of the investigation and right next door a pizzeria where the investigators are checking If there is any surveillance camera that can help in the investigation, they are checking all the cameras in the neighborhood, but surprisingly New York officials say the camera inside the subway station is not working properly, but the police found the shooter's backpack there, multiple smoke devices and a bag of commercials. quality fireworks, but not active explosives, they also recovered a 38 caliber pistol with three magazines extended, one was empty on the floor, but another in the gun had jammed and authorities believe that stopped the rampage and saved lives, as well that maybe some quick-thinking subway workers did it and immediately pulled another train out of the station.
I also need to thank the MTA workers who had the foresight to immediately move a train that was on the platform out of the station so it could take people to safety. It was smart to think that ten people were shot.
Do not hesitate to help your fellow travelers and try to protect them. Governor Hoakel condemns the gunman for turning a normal day into a nightmare. That sense of tranquility and normalcy was brutally disrupted by such a callous and depraved individual who had fortunately, all non-life threatening injuries are thanks to janae that's why the NYPD is now increasing its forces and is receiving help from the FBI and, although at this time it appears that the shooter acted alone.
There is great concern surrounding the extensive amount of planning on the part of the suspect. ABC's Chief Supreme Court Correspondent Pierre Thomas joins us now as investigators search for a motive tonight. The police approach this transport vehicle. Authorities say he is linked to that person of interest. frank james the man we believe is the tenant of this u-haul in philadelphia is a 62 year old frank r james man with addresses in wisconsin and philadelphia. We are trying to locate him to determine his connection to the subway shooting, if any. A law enforcement bulletin obtained by ABC News calls this attack a coordinated attack, believing it was clearly planned, but the motives remain unclear.
Authorities have not confirmed whether there were accomplices. What is clear, according to a senior law enforcement official, is that the shooter came prepared and fired indiscriminately into the location. smoke apparently intended to kill as many people as possible today The shooting comes amid a rise in crime in many major cities in New York City, crime on the subway increased more than 52 percent and the Overall crime increased more than 36 percent from this time last year citywide. Last week, a 16-year-old girl was shot and killed while walking home from school in January, two NYPD officers were killed while responding to a domestic dispute today Governor Kathy Hokel said New Yorkers are tired of the increase in crime in people across the state of new york york stands with the people of the city, this community and we say that no more local and federal law enforcement officials are examining the evidence for possible fingerprints on the recovered gun and other items discovered at the scene and are looking at witness videos. and surrounding businesses looking for anything that points to a suspect of key interest tonight u-haul was linked to the suspect and are focusing on a credit card found at the scene lindsey pierre thank you and join us now for additional analysis on today's incident The New York City subway attack is former FBI agent and ABC News contributor Brad Garrett Brad thanks for joining us.
It has been approximately 12 hours since this morning's attack. What would authorities be looking at right now to actually try to locate the suspect, well lindsay and pierre mentioned some of that, I mean you have a lot of potential evidence, you have an apparent weapon described as a glock with an extended magazine at the scene, it may well give you the location or the name of the person who bought it because the vast majority of mass shooters buy guns illegally and they buy them under their real name, that's one of the clues about the credit card. Pierre talked about tying it to the u-haul, so if in fact the three things are the gun, the credit card, and the u. -haul are all linked to one person, you may have this mass shooter, um, and there may also be other indicators based on the name that the NYPD is currently talking about, at least linked to u-haul , as to whether you have any.
I'm not saying mass shooting history, but what is your history? I mean right now. I'm sure they've interviewed people around them. Are you from New York? Is it from somewhere else? But even though that's going to go along with what I believe in a few hours. Not the next day you will see an arrest warrant for someone and hopefully have them in custody or at least locate them shortly after the warrants were issued. It looks like they at least have some addresses with connections to Philadelphia and also Wisconsin. Now the NYPD says they are not investigating this as an act of terrorism, but does that mean it shouldn't be considered a terrorist attack?
Of course, it is a terrorist act. Every time you commit a mass shooting it terrifies the people you know. It's important to understand Lindsay. Whether someone is driven by Islamic extremism, Isis Al-Qaeda or some far-right philosophy, it doesn't really matter from the point of view that it's usually a person who feels justified or just angry and wants to seek revenge. and they feel helpless because every one of these shooters, whether it's because of some kind of ideology or just things in their head, are angry at the world or angry people or angry at that, the transit authority, if that's even relevant in this case.
It all goes back to you're really looking for the same evidence, you're really going to look for the same things to link that I just described that are relevant to that particular crime and as a result you know you end up with a lone shooter who probably bought the gun through his uh, you know his real name, uh, maybe he traveled to New York, maybe he has a story in New York, but whatever it is, he's there to solve it because most mass shootings tend to be solved . for not a series of things that I just mentioned and they clearly don't cover their tracks because everything is driven by the event of committing the act because that's when they feel powerful, let's face it, that's what drives us, no matter which be your motivation is that it's all about power, so are you feeling pretty optimistic that they're going to be able to locate it before too long?
I think that's the only thing I can think of that wouldn't happen. Do you know many mass shooters? he was obviously killed at the scene, he obviously escaped if he decided to take his life, maybe if he went to a place they are not aware of, it may take them a while, but my feeling is that it won't take them long. before they arrest him or know where he is, former FBI agent and ABC News contributor Brad Garrett, thank you very much, as always, Brad, as Russian bombings of Ukraine continue across the country, officials have accused the military Russian to use chemical weapons.
As part of their assault, the Pentagon says they are taking the threat seriously, but have not yet confirmed these new claims of chemical warfare. ABC's James Longman, once again in kyiv for us tonight, as Russian-backed forces relentlessly pound cities in eastern Ukraine, officials are investigating reports of the possible use of a chemical agent in a marijuana attack , a Ukrainian right-wing battalion reports that a drone dropped a poisonous substance of unknown origin that it claims could not be independently verified, in part due to heavy fighting in the city. Three of its members reportedly fell ill, but were not said to be seriously injured.
The United States says it is closely monitoring the reports. We are not in a position to confirm anything. I don't think the Ukrainians either. We had credible information that Russian forces. may use a variety of riot control agents, including tear gas mixed with chemical agents that would cause stronger symptoms, to weaken and incapacitate entrenched Ukrainian fighters and civilians. A spokesman for Russian-backed rebels fighting in the region today denied they used chemicals. weapons in Mariupol, but yesterday that same spokesman said on Russian television that his forces should use chemical weapons against Ukrainian fighters to smoke the moles as his troops prepare for a new offensive in eastern Ukraine.
President Putin was in Russia's Far East today meeting with Belarusian leader Alexander Lukashenko, Putin declared that peace talks are at a dead end and vowed to continue the invasion, saying that the military operation in Ukraine is going according to as planned, but in reality Putin's forces were denied the quick victory he expected and had to. withdraw its troops from around the capital to reinforce its army in the east and tonight Ukrainian security forces say they have captured fugitive Ukrainian lawmaker Victor Medforchuk Vladimir Putin, the godfather of his daughter and who is a pro-Kremlin politician the one they have been looking for.
Since the invasion began, Medverchuk may well become a bargaining chip in any peace negotiations. Here's our thanks to James because the war in Ukraine is certainly putting significant pressure on the world economy. Inflation here in our country is now at the highest level since 1981. Americans are paying $325 more a month for essentials than they paid at this time last year here is abc's maria villarreal tonight those amazing government figures confirming what mary beth snyder is struggling with right now everyone is making tough decisions retired and on a fixed income those Difficult choices include asking for help from this food bank outside of Dallas that provides you with groceries you simply don't can afford.
It's very humiliating to be on the receiving end when you've always been on the generous side with inflation at a staggering 8.5 percent. the country is reeling from the fastest price rise since the Reagan administration. Factors driving price increases include everything from the Russian invasion of Ukraine to supply chain issues. Record high gas prices are also a huge factor in inflation and in an effort to bring them down, President Biden announced an emergency waiver to allow some gas stations to sell a higher blend of ethanol gas called e-15 during the summer. this is what it means that the a15 is approximately 10cents a gallon cheaper than e-10 but it won't solve all our problems but it will help some people and I'm committed to doing everything I can to help our thanks to Maria for that and now tonight to the big storm moving east tonight bringing with it possible blizzards strong winds fire danger and severe storms 18 states on alert tonight our boss Meteorologist Ginger Zee has the latest clue.
Hi, Ginger Lindsey has announced tornado watches again on the map tonight and a confirmed tornado just moments ago west of Waco, so let's go ahead and see who's included here. It's Fort Worth, Dallas, Austin, severe storm warning, that's it. along the dry line and that will last until 11 p.m. m. tonight, but there is another area closer to the low pressure system in Iowa, so Fort Dodge or Mason City in southern Minnesota and even parts of eastern Kansas that in Nebraska are on alert, remember there. There are blizzard conditions on the back of this, there's a lot of power behind this.
The Bismarck could end up seeing record snow with gusts over a foot and a half up to 40 miles per hour and then watch what happens as this expands eastward, damaging winds overnight and Chicago down. to shreveport i'm going to look for damaging winds mainly, but tornadoes could be embedded in some of those line segments and lindsey is centered there in memphis through eastern arkansas to southern illinois and even in evansville, indiana, some areas that have already been greatly affected are thanks to Ginger our conversation with a man chosen to play Kareem Abdul-Jabbar in a new show about the Lakers is yet to come.

In an effort to stop the illegal pet trade, police arrested 21 people and confiscated more than a million dollars in ocelots, turtles, snakes and other animals. Now onto the new series, Time to Win, The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty, the show is set in the early 1980s and is the story of businessman Jerry Bust who bought the failing Lakers and turned the team into the hottest ticket in town and eventually into NBA champions. The team was led by veteran superstar Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, who is apparently unimpressed by the Lakers' number one draft rookie, Irvin Magic Johnson, let's take a look, you're talking about him like he's the boogie man, right? what's happening on the couch?
I like this dashiki. I have a glass of orange juice with my morning newspaper separated by news section first arts and sports leisure last I have it on my doorstep at six so who did director adam mckay choose to play the legendary kareem abdul-jabbar dr . solomon hughes phd a former university student? and professional basketball player who had abandoned the game years ago through the hallways of the dr academy. hughes solomon joins us now welcome to the show thank you for having me so you have a master's degree and a doctorate and you were teaching at stanford and duke and you had no professional acting experience how did you end up getting this star and the role of kareem abdul-jabbar Not God's grace, I mean, honestly, was it?
I've always had an interest in this space, you know, I grew up as someone who is a huge fan of film, television, and theater, and in fact, I went so far that right after I graduated from college, I went to Los Angeles and tried to explore the space, so, you know, when I got the audition, I told people I was just excited to have the opportunity to put myself out there and get feedback. So you had an agent? So, at that time, I was looking for some opportunities for you in the field of acting. No, no, what I was doing was that I was so prepared until that moment.
I was literally checking Craigslist to see if there were any local auditions for short films. Just because, again, I'm a big fan of filming television, it's really impacted who I am personally, so, look, you know, I was looking forward to it. I'm curious, but I couldn't think of anything and let's talk about your role in buying time. He is six feet ten inches tall. You look a bit like Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and already had the basketball moves, but how did you capture the essence of this iconic athlete and activist? who's pretty complex, you know, i mean, i grew up in southern california, so i cream has always literally been the center of my basketball universe, so there was a certain familiarity there, and the other thing It's just that I feel like I benefited from the fact that he's been pretty generous in how much he's shared about his life, his documentary on HBO, uh, the books that he's written, etc., you know, just listening to him as a speaker, too you know. that I benefit from being in the YouTube era. where you can find images of old interviews, etc. um and so on, but it was fun, it was fun, you know, trying to capture the confidence of possibly one of the best, if not the best, basketball player of all time, that was a little stretch because when I played I think the people would look back.
I was a little shy as a basketball player, so trying to embody the confidence of someone like Kareem was fun, it was a challenge, but it was fun, and when you talk about trying to embody. the confidence that he had, you were already 40 years old when you had to start preparing to play him as a professional basketball player on screen and also master his signature sky hook, uh, which you apparently practiced for several months, tell us about that at least a year because we shot the pilot in 2019 and then because of covid everything was put on hold so I found an outdoor court and every day I did hundreds of repetitions with my right hand with my left hand and then you know, I said there is only one person who really mastered it and that's korean abdul-jabbar, but i definitely think my effort is up there with the rest of them, so you got to buy time without any acting experience, you were working with some of the biggest names from hollywood like adam mckay john c riley and adrian brody what was that process like when you made your acting debut among all those seasoned veterans?
Just so you know, I worked in higher education for eight years and one of the most important things people talk about. about the campus, I mean, there's been research done on it, how you create a sense of belonging, how you make people feel like they belong on campus so that they can continue and contribute as students, as students, etc., etc. Basically, coming into this portal and ending up in the entertainment realm, one of the things that I saw come to life and outside of the academic environment was a cast of seasoned veterans, producers, writers, etc., who really just laid the foundation for a very welcoming worship, I simply mean his willingness to talk about his journey to share knowledge about the craft.
It was incredible, it was literally a masterclass, so I know I'm very grateful for that and there was an iconic moment in the first one. episode and we had a shot just a moment ago where you recreate the role of kareem in the hit movie airplane, there it is, describe what that moment was like, like you were playing kareem, who was playing a movie character, right, no, and that was the It was the first scene I shot, so you can imagine I went in shaking, but again, you know, Adam, Max, Rodney and Jim were just over the top in terms of, you know, making me feel like I was one of the gang and, you know, we filmed it with the exact same pilot that they used on the plane in the movie, so it was a lot of fun, there was a lot of story there, so yeah, it was a good time, a lot of improvisation. and win time has now been brought back for a second season, so it looks like you're going to be busy for a while.
Are you putting academia aside for a while now that you've found this new career? Sure, I mean, I'm right. Now you know, I feel like if anything I've learned in this Roman performance is the importance of being present, then I'm really grateful for where we've been and I'm grateful for today, obviously, the news about season two, so that's it. my energy and my attention is just you know how we can tell more of this story, Dr. Solomon Hughes, thank you so much for speaking with us tonight, buying time on The Rise of the.
