1968 Harley Davidson Sat 30+ Years Untouched

pretty good on the condenser here it only has one set of points because it's a single cylinder let's see how they look there I bet they're dirty oh yeah look how dirty they are. Hey, I just Kate, no wonder it had no spark it's a little bit of WD-40 scraping off the gunk um look at all that gunk they all look horrible even though they're not pitted or anything at least I can't feel they are, they're just really dirty I see dirt coming out of them now they're pretty clean okay they're clean that looks good let's check the oil according to the manual there should be a dipstick here oh yeah look someone made an oil change, look, there's new oil. on it, nice cool oil, look at that nice and clear, see where we are on the dipstick, we'll just go in, you can see there's a maximum and main reading here, it actually tells you maximum and minimum with a line and we're.

At we're above the max setting so we're good there was a lot of oil in there actually leaned over to the side to check it here. Oh yeah, we're right at the maximum, so it leaned out a little bit, so we're good there. for the oil, well, it's been about 30 minutes, look how our pieces are, you see a lot of dirt, oh yeah, it's cleaning, all the dirt is starting to melt there, well, you could weave them together for a little longer if something else does. Melt there, okay, I think I have a battery that will work, but before I do that, let's see if our ground wire is making contact with the frame here, so we have our continuity tester on the beeps. making contact, that's making contact, so we're good, let's put one fitting in there for the battery and we'll cut the other one for the positive, okay, that's going to be our negative and we'll cut that guy off, okay?

More Interesting Facts About,

Green is positive, it's back here, we can keep it there like this and that's negative. Now we'll see if we have a spark here. Actually, let's first see if anything turns on with the key, oh yeah, there's a light on. right horn works horn doesn't work light doesn't work so just that white one works right there okay let's see if we have spark hopefully we do if not I'll diagnose other things even though you shouldn't see anything huh? , is there an off switch? Try a different spark plug first, well, so far none of the plugs work, we're not getting anything right, several different plugs, nothing works, so let's see how to get this boot off here, if Twist Off doesn't seem like it, so maybe the coil doesn't have a good ground, it's right here is the ground, let's see if it takes the ground from the battery to the coil right here, oh, it looks like there's a good ground there, let's take it off and clean it up.

Clean that up a little bit with a wire wheel and some sandpaper here and just get this weird spark again. Turn the key down, uh, there on the coil causing problems, let's go over to this side and see if these guys aren't doing it. contact you can see one of them like lightly touch one of them strange slightly disconnected they are all clean thanks I thought I saw something it was my imagination it must have been my imagination there is no spark, let's unscrew this guy from here oh, the headlight just came on working, check it didn't work before so we made contact with something to see if the dimmer switch works.

Oh, I just turned it off. It's running cold high and low so I'm wondering if we're going to get spark now. Something wasn't making contact. Before I wonder if we had any spark now still nothing. Let's get this guy out of here oh, that could be the culprit right there, there's nothing exposed on that wear, huh, that could be it, let's trim it back a little bit, now there's a wire sticking out. Look at it, put it back in, we'll see if we get something that's any good, here we go, turn it on, don't try a different plug, nothing, damn, I was using a 12 volt 7.5 amp hour battery.
I thought it said six, right? Here and that was six volts, but it's 12 volts, so that could be the problem right there. Oops, that's not good. I hope I haven't tried anything right. We take the carburetor out of the ultrasonic cleaner, clean all the parts and it is ready. to get back together, so this slide here didn't want to go up, so I had to sand it down a little bit to make it work. Now it's working perfectly, so we fixed that part, a part here, the seat where the needle goes to the right. It was all clogged with dirt in there so I took a small screwdriver and cleaned it all up and took some sandpaper and it was fine so now the needle goes in and out of there and then both the main jet and the pilot jet were clogged . really bad so we uncover them so everything is ready so we can start putting it back together here it goes right on this side right there goodness foreign here it's okay over there okay so this one actually goes here to hold the float there, like this that we have two.
Insert the needle like this. I'm wondering what is the best way to do it. Insert the needle first. I don't know, it's hard to get in there. I don't know the password, oh, I just pressed. the slide in like this there we go, it goes in there like this now this little one goes in and out like this just moving the needle up and down and then that's going to stay there like this it moves up and down like this that's going to go in there we clean it up , I don't know which way to go, but I just assume that here is fine, so this will continue like this.
Move that there, okay and this continues one way or another like this. Foreign I went ahead and bought a six volt battery, a 4.5 amp hour 20 hour battery, it's rechargeable, I bought this on Amazon so we finally got it in the mail and we're going to hook up the positive here, see if we get spark now close. that, turn the key on, everything is lighting up, let's see if the light works, so we don't burn the lights from using the 12 volt battery, that's fine, let's see if we have sparks, now still nothing, so one way to check If we have spark just cross the points and then see if we have spark on the spark plug that's what we can do so I'm just going to open the points with the screwdriver that will cross them I'm going to look for a spark on the spark plug because maybe something is wrong with the points so we have the battery on now we're just going to cross the points here we should have blue spark oh yeah look at that so I think that's something to do With the points right now we're getting some consistent spark so I think what we're going to do now is put some gas in the carburetor and see if this ignites because that would be awesome, so I adjusted the points gap. a little bit now it's broken so it must have been a little too big okay everyone has a clean gas tank so we're just going to manually put some gas into the carburetor here hopefully no leaks.
It looks like it's going to toast, it's a little long, so I'm going to squirt a little bit down there just to make starting a little bit easier on the spark plug here. I don't have a throttle or accelerator cable connected. because it broke down, so hopefully it just starts and the idols are perfect, so we'll see, all good, thanks, very good, turn off the idle a little bit, that's really cool, a little while oil is coming out of the pipe here, a lot of oil that becomes clear. Wow, she runs well, it's just that she looks at all that black stuff coming out of the pipe.
I wonder if those rings are stuck a little bit allowing the oil to buy up. Down here, that was the cylinder. I noticed a slight oil leak. You see it on the line. right there, I don't know if it's coming from the head gasket higher up or from the line, it's a little hard to tell, so we'll keep an eye out that all of this was just carbon deposits coming out of there. It wasn't oil, so it wasn't white or anything, so I think it's just burning a lot of carbon right now, so what we're going to do is let this run for a moment and see if it stops smoking, ok let's see if we quit smoking now thanks ok I took the air filter out of the carbs now we can use the throttle yeah strange the smoke must have been the initial start with the oil in the cylinder because it all came together look good, you can see it's still dripping. oil right there, so we have to figure out it's coming from somewhere, you can see the drip like this, it's running good, accelerates good, I can't believe this thing turned on and we got really lucky with the spark situation. so yeah, now it's cranking constantly, sounds great revving, everything's done except for the oil leak on the right side, um, I have to figure out where it's coming from and then we have to clean the tank and get a filter.
Here and this thing should be ready to go. Oh and then the throttle cable we need to replace before the first ride so a couple more things to do but she's making progress, at least we have to turn it on today and it's a first start. in 30

years

, so I'm very happy with that, so anyway guys, thanks for watching, thanks for subscribing, stay tuned for the next video when we do this for the first time, hopefully until next time, thanks.
