. you haven't seen it and you want to check it out, that's going to be kind of a prerequisite for this video, it should be somewhere down here, anyway, it's going to pop up and click here for you, so if you haven't seen that video from BT, you want to see it first to understand why we are doing this.

It is important that you go in chronological order. When you determine the repairability of a roof, the first thing you do is sort of a visual inspection, then a brilliance

test

, and then a final result, this is the last, um, last effort to prove whether a roof is repairable or No, it's a true test of repairability, this is something that many insurance companies and many different claims have worked with that give data to the insurance adjuster why the roof was not repairable, so I'm going to get into this and show you this, so we have this shingle here that looks like it's been damaged, it's been raised, so This is a shingle that needs to be replaced, so what I'm going to do is pull out my handy old trowel.

I'm going to go ahead and lift these tiles directly adjacent to it to the left and towards Okay, remember it's a side to side motion, it's not up and down, none of this boot stuff, okay, move from side to side. side, so let's do the top tiles too, okay, now we have all of these up, what I want. To make the reason they call this a three tab shingle because on each shingle there are three tabs, these are not individual pieces, so I'm going to take a look here and see if we can find where the roof is, not the roof, and see where the tile originates now. this is the corner here, so we know this is corner one and this is corner two, so we know our shingle is within these parameters, so now I'm going to put this back.

I'm going to start removing the nails again now. I'm not being too harsh, this is no different than doing a repair. We had a previous video where we repaired an architectural shingle roof. If you haven't seen that you are looking for something that is a little more explanatory. a little bit more of that process or exactly what we're doing and why we're doing it, you can look at it again, we're just getting in here, take out these shingles, take out this nail, so okay, now what are we going to do. we're going to go ahead and zoom this out now this is what we're going to do we're going to keep counting we're going to put a little digit somewhere down here maybe up here we're going to count how many times you lift these tiles up and down, we're going to keep track, so we've already lifted them once, okay, we didn't include what we did with the trowel, that doesn't count because the shingle didn't actually lift, we lifted them once. to get the nails out, so that's the first step, okay, let's place this here, take our new shingle and place it, okay, now keep in mind that I have to lift the shingle to place the hammer here.

Can't you, you know, hit the nail on the head. top of the shingle here, you can't do this, you have to lift the shingle, so I'm going to lift this up here to make sure we're getting a good seal on the tar strip. Some adjusters asked me, well you know why you can't just use two nails just use two nails you don't need four nails sick nails whatever the case may be and I say well actually you need more than that will maintain the roof's wet wind rating this The little boy was on a two-by-four and didn't want to go in.
Well, now I hope you're counting because so far we're at two times of lifting and lowering these tiles, so we're at two. Remember it's not just one or two tiles, it's a shame we have to lift a lot of tiles to do this. Now we are in two times. The next step is we need some caulking. I'm going down. take that and I'll be right back so we're back at the top of the roof we've got our caulking gun so we're going to go down here and this is very important and a lot of adjusters don't know it and a lot of homeowners I don't know and some contractors, the bad, they don't know it either.
Once we have all the shingles up, we have our new shingles, then we will have to go back and hand seal each shingle that we put up. These tar lines are not just going to be magically reheated and sealed, we have to make sure they are sealed by hand, which we would hate to happen, let's do this repair, maybe a couple of weeks go by, we have another storm and then, because all these tiles have been lifted. they have more damage because they're susceptible to damage, so we're going to come here and then we're going to reseal our shingles now.
I hope you're still counting, so keep counting how many times we lift the shingles, so I'm going to come here, I'm just getting to get a good seal, I don't need to go crazy with it, just get a good seal on all these shingles that we lift. , um, okay, that's it, so now I counted three times that we lifted that. shingle we lift it once to the lever to remove the nails we lift it twice to apply the nail with a hammer lift it a third time to reseal the shingle now your insurance adjuster if again you have seen the additional test video above I will see that the insurance adjuster will come down here and just lift the shingle once, put his fist under it and put it down and say that's it, it's repairable, but he didn't do the other lifts, that's it, that's it.
The key is in the details, if you come here and take a look, you'll see tears in these shingles right here, where it is, this has been torn off from where we lifted the shingle, we lifted the shingle and this is torn and broken here we have another one right here here this is during the repair suffered this additional damage you have another crease right here look at this tear right here look this is proof that this roof cannot be repaired it's just a tear, a tear, I mean this whole roof cannot be repaired repair, all this lifting, so you know, we just checked these few shingles, there are already tears in them, we know that this roof really cannot be repaired, which is why it is so important when selecting a roofing contractor, we have done others videos on questions to ask him and things like that very important question: Do you do repairs?
