size

. Here is the jelly roll

race

quilt I made. A couple of months ago this was the Jelly Roll Drag Race, it was a lot of fun to do and it goes very very fast, that's one of the reasons people love Jelly Roll Race quilts.

What they don't like is that you can't. control the size and the strips usually come out horizontal and I like my strips to go vertical a lot of the time so with the Jelly Roll racing quilt, generally speaking you make one long strip with all your strips and then fold it in half. fold it in half again and it will end up at this size. You can't control the size at all. With the method I'm going to show you today, you'll be able to make this exactly the size you want. Let me show you what we do. we're going to do, we're going to take the gelatin strips here there's a long strip and we're going to put three decorative squares there and we're going to use these fabrics here for the accents and we're going to place them by making a unit of strips and then cutting it now to size.

More Interesting Facts About,

introducing the adjustable size jelly roll race quilt pattern...

If you have a roll, you can make a square quilt about fifty-eight inches. I don't normally make square quilts but you can also make it rectangular and these are just approximate sizes so we could make a forty eight by seventy now if we have two rolls we can make an eighty two inch square or a rectangular one it's about seventy and six times ninety-three rolls. or about ninety-two by 110 and of course all of these can have borders added and they don't have to be your exact dimensions, but this gives you an idea of what you can do so I'll have information for free.

pattern

on our websites you don't have to remember any of this, but let's start sewing.

I'm going to use a quarter yard of each of these accents and cut it into three two and a half inch strips. each one I'm going to make one strip unit in that order so let's take the first two and just line up the edges and sew using a quarter inch seam and use a small stitch length because they will be cut off after you sew them and that helps . That seam allowance doesn't come undone if you use a small stick. Now I'm going to press this with my fingers to the side because it makes the next step of ironing much easier, so just open it up and you can use your fingertips or your nails.

If you have them and you draw that down there and that's going to make it nice and flat when we iron now we're going to add this third piece right here, same method, don't stretch anything, just get the edges nice and even. press with your fingers in the same direction, so make three of these strip units and that will give us enough to make the entire quilt. Now this is already quite flat because we press with our fingers, but I like to give it a good steam. I have all three. I removed the units here and since this is a

race

and I want to go fast, I'm going to cut them all at the same time, so I lined the first one up on one of the lines on my cutting board and I'm going to put this one on top but an inch higher so that continue in a straight line.
Then I'll put this one on top of that one inch higher. I'm still only going to cut three, four or five layers all at once, but I can take my sword, my ruler and my glasses. I'm going to start right here because I don't like edges that aren't always as straight as the rest and we can cut it all at once now that we're at it. I'm going to cut these two and a half inches so you can see how fast it is and each of these we have three units at a time so I only need 40 total so I'm going to cut a few more and then I'm going to sew them together with our strips .
I'm going to use the Hoffman strip set. This is what they call Bali pop, but it's two and a half inch strips and these are all boutiques. I don't want to be too picky when I put These in order, but I'm going to have to look a little bit so that we don't end up with too much of the same color in one place so that they have it mixed together pretty well, except here we have quite a bit. of light all piled up there, so I'm probably going to place those lights here a little bit.
You can't really tell exactly where the pieces will end up because we're going to put them in a big long strip, but I don't want to have these two green ones in a row, that's going to bother me, so let's put one here, let's put this one here and now we have the colors, let's put this pink here and now we have the colors mixed pretty well. Okay, so let's take this big lump to the machine. All we have to do now is take a strip and one of these accents, then sew it with a quarter inch seam and press it with your fingers, always pressing with your fingers in that direction.
We're going to take the next strip and we're going to sew it together and we're going to keep pressing with our finger each time and we're going to add another accent, so we're going to do this for all the strips and all the accents. I have all my strips and strip units sewn into this really long piece here. and you'll notice that I have it in a little plastic container. I think a container or box is a great thing to collect your patchwork so you can easily move it in this case and also so it doesn't get dirty.
I'm going to make 70 inches and 48 by 70 inches, so I want to make my first strip 70 inches long, so let's measure that here and we'll cut it about 70 and a half inches long. I want some. a little bit of extra length because we're going to trim the entire quarter when we're done and this doesn't have to be very straight because like I said we're going to square it off later so that's my first row here the next row is going to be Let's start here so we're going to take the cube and the row and we'll go back to the sewing machine and we'll sew this along that edge, so I'll put the cube just right. here on the floor and this will come out, we're going to put the right sides together and we're going to sew along this edge using a quarter inch seam and this part goes very quickly, this is where the racing part comes in.
I've got this nice long stretch and you can really gain some speed. I'm almost at the end. I'm going to sew and we're going to take our scissors and we're going to cut this even if I like it. fold it back and then cut that fold because it gives me a straighter cut. Now we're going to go to the top again and I like to finger press, I know it's an extra step, but I like to finger press this whole scene because it makes ironing later a lot easier, but this is one step Bonus if you want to just iron everything when you're done you can eliminate this step but I really think it will save you time if you do this so I'm holding out. pressing it open and pressing that seam to the side now we're just going to take our strip out of our box again and we're going to start the next row, we're just going to put this right on top and we're going to start sewing, you can see that the secondary

pattern

appears now, this isn't even ironed yet, but because we finger pressed it's very flat, but you see how they are spaced very evenly and that will happen no matter what size quilts you make now.
If your first row isn't 70 inches, your accent line may end up being more angled like this or more angled like this, but you'll get even angles and that gives you a really awesome secondary pattern, it's really fun, so I'm going to put a edge and then I'll quilt it and then I'll show you what it looks like, look how pretty this quilt turned out. I know I did it, but I'm very, very happy with You may not know this, but most of the quilts we make for our videos are the first time I've made the pattern, so I've never made this quilt before until I made this.
Can you see how the accents made them really pretty? diagonal lines, it seems like I planned everything on purpose so that they hit at exact intervals and they do at exact intervals, that's because we made a row and cut it and then moved up and did the next exercise, so what happens is this and very very even again if your first row is longer or shorter yours might end up doing this or that pattern but they will still be pretty and I even quilted this pattern in a design called still waters and it looks a lot like the waves of the ocean. and it's a pattern designed by and right and we have this on our computer on our gamma machine.
I really like the movement of this and use it a lot when we do boutiques. Now on the back I used a more abstract batik which is a batik. Again it looks very watery to me even though it is greenish but the blues, yellows and greens go really well with the top so the patrick was 48 by 70 and then I added a two inch cut edge and a cut of four and a half inches. edge, so now it's a 58 by 80 battle, which is just a perfect pitch size. Really one of the best parts of this pattern is that you can dictate what size it comes out, so I used one jelly roll, here you can use two jelly rolls, three jelly rolls.
Rolls and you can make it exactly the length you want and we will have all that information in the free pattern that will be on our website.
