Mar 18, 2024
you know, as a disc jockey and all that, so I mean, it was there in the heart, you know, I don't know how much it was heard around the country, but all I can say is where it was, I mean, it came out every hour, many of those solar songs were in the rotation. Absolutely yes, absolutely yes, it was, you couldn't stop it, it was, that's the power of a hit, that's what we always say, when you have hits, nothing can get in your way, it spreads over everything and that album was great. I mean, you know A Lady was a great ballad, um, and the snare drum is funky, um, the song for Donny was so touching, you know, it was just called The Whispers, yeah, you know, we didn't even even put it on.

Spent a lot of time trying to figure out what we're going to call this because every song we had a song for Donnie Lady, so yeah, out of the box, say yes, say yes, it got bigger than Lady, it was never released as single and really, uh. From a popularity point of view, it was bigger than and the lady was like on the radio every 15 minutes. I never forget. My wife told me that if I listen to the lady one more time, I will be ruined if I drive. because you know about the rotation, you know when you have to hit, you're going to hear it, you're going to hear it a lot, you know, yeah, well, there's a lot of songs with a lady, you know like three times a lady and whatever millionaire, but but .

This was probably my favorite with a lady in it. That album went to number one on the R B chart and also went to number six. Pop, that's right, yeah, pop number six, that's right, yeah, the biggest album we've ever had. No doubt, it's funny that people write today and tell us that, man, what was it like after we had the beat , it was as big a hit as Rock Steady and we always have to fix it and the beat goes on, it was bigger than Rocksteady, it was just the biggest record we ever had, it was a true double platinum album, two million sales and counting , Rocksteady was a million, plus it went platinum, it never hit the 2 million mark, but again at the time because radio was so powerful for most people.

I thought Rocksteady was bigger than it needed to be, but it really wasn't, it wasn't even close. What was it like working with Leon? We tell people this all the time. This type. You know it came from the Silvers. I would tell you a short story: the first time we went to New York City we went to the Apollo theater that we opened for the money that we didn't have and to get over it at this point, but if you remember, the money was the group from that radio station that record company wanted to imitate the jacksons, they had the great naturals and I mean they had a real movement in which they shook their heads like the jacksons and the naturals flew in the air and so on, but león silva was the eldest brother was a bassist, but as a producer I wish people to this day could know how talented this guy was.

Leon Silva would come into the studio and before the

rhythm

track was cut you would see Leon Silver in the studio and if you didn't hear him he would be on his knees in front of a drum kit and he would literally be with his hand playing the bass on the kick drum and in his mind from the bass drum to the snare and the toms. he played those drums, he knew what he wanted, that's the way and the beat was cut from the kick drum up and you know an easier way to say Leon was the drum machine before there was a drum machine, yeah, It was a human battery. machine, yeah, because what he was doing, I remember we used to be there laughing and we'd see him there on his knees and he'd do that just for one for 30 minutes, that's all you hear, what the hell are we doing?
I know, but when he was done with what he was doing, then he would go and do it with the sock symbol, he would have a beat for it, he would do all the drums and then, since he was naturally a bassist, then he would do it. After finishing what he was doing with the drums, he would go to the base and from that drum

he would start playing the bass and then he would have the guys come and play the guitar and he would add the keyboards. and that's how the

rhythm

track was cut and the beat goes on, yeah, but it was all in his head before it happened and what was fascinating to me, he knew what it was going to sound like, but we didn't.
No, you know in the end because what he went through to get it made him seem a little crazy, yes, but when you heard what he ended up with then you understood the genius of Leon Silvers, I think he is the best r b of all you have. what you have to do is listen to the work of the

and the work of shalimar and the work of the dynasty and you will see that that is all me and a man that is the greatness of león silva he made all that your baby faces and all These people that came after were listening to him they were imitating him, they were imitating him, yes that's true and he no, he didn't get the credit, but I mean it was incredible, yes, wow, the work speaks for itself, without doubt, yes, yes, there is much more in this great
