Mar 11, 2024
This video is sponsored by natives Hello guys, welcome back to my channel. I'm Alexandra and in today's video I'm tackling a DIY for this unused space at the top of my

stair

s. I feel like if you have

stair

s in your house, you might be wondering what I can do on this

landing

. Anyway, I'm here to hopefully solve that question in my own home, so I found this information on Pinterest and I think I was looking at how to decorate a

landing

or Landing ideas, staircase ideas. Honestly, there isn't much out there and I knew I was going to have to make something custom, but I love the shape of this

console

table

and if it had a grand entryway it would definitely be there, so I want to try to recreate something similar.

everything to give it a lot of texture, what do you think? Okay, I'll try to make something similar but something that fits on this landing, so let me take you there and show you how it works. The situation is that this is the landing. I love this bench. It really works here. It's just a great place to put all the things that I need to carry with me during the day, as you can see. It's very dark and it just doesn't serve that purpose, this is our entrance, you go up the stairs, you end up here and then it opens up into our kitchen, dining room and living room, this bench definitely doesn't fit here, but I think we could make some sort of it. of shelf and have it as a place to put candles and a little decoration just so it doesn't look so plain.

making my empty stair landing cute diy plaster console table...

I have my tape measure here. I'm going to see realistically how deep I can make this shelf. so the mirror sticks in at about four inches, so I think in the ideal world I make a 3.5 inch shelf and then make a mirror that's more flush with the wall so it doesn't feel as closed. I love getting into these. videos these smaller DIY videos without having a real plan and just seeing how everything develops and works, so I'm going to go to the Team Ag workshop and do some DIY. You guys know I've been using native deodorant for years.

Let's get back to DIY. Well, it's time to build first. We are drawing the shape on the board. Next, I'm using a

table

saw and jigsaw to cut the arch shapes out of the board. Now we have the shape we want. The front isn't the cleanest cut anyone has ever made, but I for one obviously won't concede if I try. What I also like is that there is so much space here that it won't feel like it's taking over the entire landing. I don't think it's great, great, I love it. Yes, good job, it's been a couple of days and the frame is ready as you saw, now it's time to add the arches, so we're using hardboards, basically we're going to almost bend them.
To make it curved, we will use construction adhesive and staples to adhere it. You would have been very impressed with my cut. I was using a jigsaw and a table sock. Not Graham, but you would be great, so before adding the hardboard arches. We are actually gluing these two by fours to our frame, this will make it stronger and this is what the hard board will be attached to. The depth of these is only three and a half inches. This is a really narrow

console

because we're not working with a lot of outside space, we're using blocks to give the table depth and gluing them around the back of the arches with wood glue once they're attached with the glue I'm going to introduce. with the nail gun to make them safer we have already finished

making

the frame, we are going to turn it around and show it to you and then we are going to make the arches with the cardboard,

,

cute

, we all look like babies at a concert, one of the Pieces that we just cut will be for the top of the console table, the middle one will be for the middle arch and then I need to cut this into two points and these will be the size of half arches, now I'm going to go in with adhesive for pieces of construction, we're going to put up the arch and then we'll go in with the stapler, what are you laughing at?
I thought this console looks so strange in colors, guys. The table looks so good, it's the perfect size and it's finally time to move on to

plaster

ing it, so this is what will make it look really textured and give it that stone look. This is what looks so good, so Graham filled it all in. The holes with wood putty sanded everything and then when it was a little bit of primer, we're going to use a little bit of plaster of paris to give it the stone effect. First we will put fiberglass drywall tape all over the console table.
We're going to help the plaster of paris stick to it and we're just going to improvise it with spatulas and make it look very textured. You could probably do this with putty too, but I think we have such a large surface area to fill that plaster of paris is going to be easier, spread the cream cheese again, wait for it to dry, so you're looking at how to make a sandwich Bagel, okay, it's foreign, but I think maybe we should make it if we make a test batch first. Okay, time to mix up a wide travel sandpaper spatula or sponge.
Add two parts dabster ferret. I know it fits like that. What's it called? Oh, is it called? really, so I'm going to make a cup full, I'm going to be a little quick, we're going to add a little bit of white glue, okay, and it's just to make it a little bit, we're going to add it stronger and we're going to mix it and we're going to beat it because it's already been about a minute

making

pancakes oh this is really like pancake batter okay I'm starting in that area yeah oh we want all that texture there people I think we're going to have to do a couple layers yeah this is .
Just to make it nice and sticky while drying, I'm going to try two colors of paint, this one looks lilac, it was supposed to be beige, but it looks lilac and this one looks very pink, and I'll see which one will work on the table, yeah there is some. I really like this color, you hate it, no, I like it a lot. It's called static plaster. I think it will look great with all the texture. It's very pretty. We have to let this dry between coats. I'm going up to the studio, work a little. Graham is going to do a second coat, probably a third too and then on Monday we'll sand it all down and paint it, a couple of days later and I've just walked into the shop, the plaster is dry.
It looks very good and today we are going to do the last step which is painting, but I want to show you what it looks like. Strange fact, we are using a wild ball color, but we got the color to match Benjamin Moore. We just gave it the name of the color, we got it for much cheaper than the girl's, oh that was good, so the next day the paint dried. Graham brought the console in and I'm really excited to put it out there and see what it's going to look like. I hope it fits, the first thing I'm going to do is remove this mirror and replace it with the one in the bathroom, so we'll do a little swap and then we'll bring in the console.
Oh, it looks great. a little tight, it doesn't fit because we plastered it which added a little bit on each side so I would say if you're doing this project and you want it to go wall to wall, don't make exact exact measurements, go a little. A little less, you can always caulk the edges. We're going to cut this out using a saw, but you really don't want to do that because the plaster might crack, so we don't recommend very well to make this look built. on the wall we're tracing the legs and then using a tool called a scribe, this is a compass, a compass, not a scribe, um, and we're going to place the legs flush against the base.
Graham is actually teaching me how to do this. in turn I will teach all of you that the first thing we are going to do is trace the baseboard, cut out that shape that we were going to use as a piece of MDF, instead we will use painter's tape because it is easier to cut out. then we're going to trace that onto the console table leg, cut it out with a saw and then it'll fit perfectly into the socket. You'll probably use this once in your life, but even though it seems like you use it every time.
Like a couple of weeks, but we'll line this up so we like the point that sticks out the most. Well, I'll set your compass or plotter or whatever to the distance between the wall, yeah, and this Edge uses the point as a guide and just gently traces the shape the shape keeps them completely horizontal you just want to go over your lines did you ever think that In math class would you use a compass for this? No, I didn't really pay attention in math class. I failed math, yes. The professor advised me that he should drop the class because he had a 43.
So I didn't really have the opportunity to fail. He was already failing. Now let's cut this with an exact night. Okay, and we're just going to slap. on each side and then let's peel this guy wow whoa It's magical, that was so good, okay, okay, pop that here and then we'll cut it out once we've hung it on the wall, this piece will like to hug that. piece of baseboard perfectly, so you're marking around the tape, yeah, I'm like drawing on it, okay, and then the negative space is what we're going to cut out and we can use the same piece on the other leg, right, yeah .
Great, we're using a French cleat to hang this originally we were going to make small holes for keyholes and then use two screws like you would hang a picture but I think a French cleat will be stronger and also Graham cut the tool I needed to make the holes of the lock, he got the cable, so yeah, I'll be fine, though yeah, oh, yeah, yeah, okay, I want to step back and see, okay, look how good that goes in, though oh, I'll tell you I just said, well, did you see this, yeah, I just pointed it out, uh, the noise, so there was a crack, there's just a crack, this looks so good, it's the perfect size, it doesn't take up too much of the landing, it's exactly what this little place needed, okay, somehow the crack that Graham was freaking out, like it disappeared and Amanda and I don't know how and Graham won't tell us, so the leg crack disappeared, it's still there, It just has a little bit of give, it just held on too.
I trimmed the table legs a little bit and then pushed them back against the baseboard and I guess the two pieces that were coming apart essentially came back together or as Graham said, magic, no it was magic, it fits nicely against the sockets. I have decided that. We are not going to caulk the edges. This is actually supposed to be a table and not a built-in piece. Graham is just filling in any small cracks with some putty and I'm going to hang the mirror that was on it. bathroom, this mirror was actually always meant to be here.
I just never got around to hanging it and then it ended up in the bathroom so I'm excited to see it on the wall. Weird, it looks so good, yeah, that mirror was meant to be here Graham's not going to like it I don't know, I'm going to say this, but I think the wall needs some paint, well, because it's like no finish, I think I'll try some colors. I want to try lime wash, we have a very nice green in the studio, we have a beige, but I also want to try the paint color that I used on the table on the wall, it's like a monochrome moment, you know from the beginning of the planning stage.
I was thinking we would do battery operated wall sconces but I didn't go that route because I measured and I think they would stick out too much, but I think painting this wall will make it feel more complete and intentional. It's a moment because right now things are just floating around, all this paint that we have to choose from is from the studio, we have a big collection of paint, so this is like leftovers of things, so we don't buy anything new, which is well the first one. The color I'm going to try is green like olive lime wash.
There's also a lot of green in my house so I'm not sure and then the second color I'm going to try is the color of the console. I'm going to start with those two and then we'll go from there. What smells like an old boathouse? Ok Google, lime paint goes bad over time every five to seven years. Hello Google, why does it smell like lime? the mouse or the rotten and dead fish I don't know, but I found these results to be true. She doesn't know. Hello Google, what does a cat sound like? Hello Google, you set an alarm every day at 5:30 a.m. 5 30 A.M. you're getting really rebellious and that's too watery but it looks like a pond oh yeah oh yeah but I think if we do any other color then we'll match it will look oh that's nice okay this smells like grandpa's breathIt smells like grandma's foreign studs on the wall, so how nice, solid, it's so solid, it looks so good, the perfect call to paint it looks amazing, yes it looks great, the paint was much needed.
Totally agree during the holidays. I decided to change the mirror. one is from the Mirror home decor art and I love it. much more foreign thank you all so much for watching and as always see you next time bye
