Plant it ONCE and Enjoy for YEARS to come!

Mar 21, 2024
Hello friend, wel

come

back to the grow room. We're going to start with all these perennial flowers and a couple of annuals, but mainly pear flowers that we put in the refrigerator over a month ago. It's been about a month and a few days since we moved on. and we cold stratified a bunch of seeds and today is the day we are going to start

plant

ing them. I wanted to mention that I have two coats of paint on this shelf and I just went ahead and put them here to take them out. By the way, it's already done, we're not exactly sure what we're going to do with these floors here.

Josh is waiting to hear back from the home improvement store to give us options, so here's what I did to prepare. So we can get started today, I haven't put these cabinets back together, but I just took a folding table and put it here and this is what we're going to use to start our seeds so I can get my heat mat. I haven't finished painting there yet, but we will, so I want to give you a very quick update. I was here for hours over the weekend Just me, me and me putting some things in pots and it felt.

More Interesting Facts About,

plant it once and enjoy for years to come...

It's amazing to be here and I just want to give you some updates. You can see this is the celery and the celery. If you look very closely, we started celery and celery on many blocks of dirt and I went ahead and made the biggest one. large blocks of soil and I put the celeriac in acelery in each of these and then here we have. I had to write a new one. This is Snap Dragons mixed with ponac berries. I went ahead and potted them too, we have great ones. germination in our peppers I think all of our peppers and all of our dalas have almost germinated.

I have almost 100% germination in my dalas. Look how healthy these

plant

s look and everything is just amazing. There may be two or three of each tray full. where I didn't have any sprouted so I'm really happy with the fact that the tomatoes here just started sprouting so I have the plastic wrap on for the most part. I pulled out all my eucalyptus trees, so those are up here. I have some here. and then somewhere else, oh, this is parsley and bachelor buttons and Sweet William, lots of sprouting on peppers up here, these are mostly hot peppers in this tray, here we have some tomatoes that are just starting to sprout, more Snap Dragons, I chose this. it's the maiden butterfly here are more Snap Dragons these are my white Snap Dragons that I have in pots these are the butterfly Snap Dragons and they look so happy now that they have more space I can put them in the Gard Garden here very soon it's cauliflower and cabbage more Snap Dragons this whole tray is Snap Dragons here we have some Cosmos starting to sprout onions need a haircut down here is where I have most of my eucalyptus two different varieties and then this is just a bunch of hodgepodge of different things here we have flour teragon straw and lemongrass and a lot of fun things that are starting to sprout here we have more onions that need a haircut basil a lot of basil has sprouted or just jevie basil or purple basil or lemon basil more Snap Dragons and more dalas that's right what all the snapdragons looked like before I took them out and I still need to get to this tray so I'm going to target this one today.

I think lift this tray and then over here. we have our thoughts and then all these little ones are patunas, a lot of these patunas are actually going to go into the green stocks along with a lot of these babies and speaking of green stocks, I just got two new green stocks, these are the green stocks of basket weave these are a brand new design and I want to thank green actions for contacting me and offering to sponsor today's video. You all know I have been using my green stocks for the last 3

years

and when they offered to sponsor. a video.
I was honored that they are having a great sale right now on the basket weave pattern that is new, so I'm going to set up my two so you can see the difference between the original size of the green leaf and the leaf, and They can see. how beautiful this pattern is. I chose the same color of planters that I have with my other green stock, so this is six green stocks in total that I have now. I have been collecting two each year, they seem to be very easy to place. together and obviously there's no soil in them because I'm not going to plant in them yet so here you can really see how beautiful the basket weave is up close and this is the leaf so it's a smaller container and there's 42 slots so you can put 42 plants in 2 square feet with this planter and with this one this is their original you can see they are a little deeper and you can put 30 plants in 2 square feet this basket weave pattern is currently on sale today, March 19-26, it's 35% off and if you use code Becky you'll get an extra $10 off orders of $75 or more.
The link for this green stock sale will be the first link in the description box. It's exciting to dream about that. what they're going to look like this summer, we've already started on quite a few things that will end up in these planters, so now let's go ahead and start on a few more things that will end up in these planters and In the landscape I have, I think, N9 or 10 different bags here that we started to cold stratify, which means we take the seed and we moisten a paper towel and you see here, we have seeds here and they haven't germinated yet.
They have been dormant even though we moistened them, but we put them in the refrigerator, they are dormant, so what we need to do now is take the life out of these seeds, but before we can give them life I need to make a bunch of blocks of soil so I'm Of all my trays that I have I actually have a few more trays on the way but I also have these trays so they were a gift and I haven't used them yet and I'm going to use them today for these cold stratified flowers . so I'm going to take a minute and take my compost that I already moistened yesterday but it dried out a little bit so I need to add a little more water and put it in here.
I'm going to mix this up. I found that when it

come

s to making dirt blocks, it helps if you let the soil sit and hydrate over the weekend. When I was here making soil blocks to plant my snapdragons and eucalyptus, it was the first time I used cold water. I heard you don't like me putting boiling water in this beautiful compost so I just used my cold water hose but what I noticed was that I had a harder time making really good blocks of soil and I think that's because I didn't. I let the soil settle normally when I put that hot water in here, I let it sit for a good half hour or so so it can fully hydrate and honestly it can cool down so I can touch it and then what am I going to do?
What you need to do is moisten this, let it sit, we're going to go in and start with some pizza dough because we're going to make cinnamon roll pizza buns, no, we're going to make cinnamon roll pizza, like this that I don't do it. I don't know what you would call that. I just watched a reel and we're going to try to make it for dinner tonight, so now that I've got this mixed up here, let's go in and make some dough and then I'll head out to start blocking the dirt. I should also grab some pizza sauce and defrost it while we do the rest of the other things we're doing today to defrost my pizza sauce.
I just put my container in some warm water so I'll be thawed when we're done and I'm going to start the dough here. I would use a dough hook but this part of my dough hook is chipping so I went ahead and threw it away and I have another one coming so I'm going to use my paddle attachment because that's what I have and add a little bit of yeast. I need to feed it some honey. I really like what honey does in the dough. I used to use sugar, but now I almost always use honey.
I'm going to mix this up and let it sit for a few minutes while I wait. I'm going to fill my bread flour. I'm going to use this bread flour first. I've been experimenting with bread flour and I really like what it does to my bread products so I had to get another bag and I'm going to use some whole wheat bread flour and just white bread flour so let's use a combination of these two flowers. I'm not following a particular recipe. I'm just inspired by what I saw on Instagram, so we're going to start with that bread flour, add a little bit more and then I'm going to start with a cup of whole wheat bread flour and a couple tablespoons of good quality olive oil.
I've never used a paddle attachment to make dough before, so this is going to be interesting. I could have taken it out. I took out my Bosch, but didn't think about it until it was pretty runny. Well, whole wheat flour needs time to hydrate, so it's hard to know exactly how much flour to add right away, so I'll let it sit for about 10 minutes. and then I'll add more flour if it still feels too sticky. I don't have any shredded cheese in my refrigerator, so this would be the perfect time to go ahead and make some shredded cheese.
I don't have many more ingredients. what grated cheese to put on this pizza oh, I have some pepperoni and salami, in fact, the last little bit that we didn't use for the party. I have some green onions that need to be used, we'll use those that are a good find, the strawberries are not going to work cheese, so it's going to be pepperoni, salami, green onion and cheese, what would you call those? They're not cinnamon pizza rolls because you would call them jelly rolls if you put them with jelly and I'm going to make It came out of the pizza, so just pizza rolls.
I guess I just washed my green onions. Now I'm going to grate this Parmesan cheese. I'm going to shred everything. I don't think I'll need everything. this, but I don't want to shred it again, so I'm going to go ahead and break it all up. I think you need a little more flour, not much more, maybe about 1/4 cup, mix that in and then I'll probably end up having to hand knead the last piece after mixing the flour. I only let it mix with about half of what I added because I thought it was pretty good and I didn't want my dough to get too dry, so this looks like a perfect consistency, so I'm going to knead it a little bit here, oh, You know what I just remembered, let me know this and I'll grab one more thing that we're going to put on our pizza rolls.
I'm going to put this dough back into this bowl and cover it. I have dried tomatoes. I forgot I had some cowboy candy which is pickled jalapenos, a sweet pickled jalapeno, so that's going to add a little bit more to our pizza. I'm going to slice this, it'll probably take, I don't know, an hour or so for the pizza dough to rise completely the first time, so I think I can make all of my dirt blocks in that amount of time, so that's I have a little bit left, so let's make a bunch of dirt blocks.
I'm not going to be able to make dirt blocks at this height, it's too high for me, so I'm going to use this stool and I'm going to use my dirt blocker which has the round insert and I didn't wash this dirt blocker after I used it last time, which is quite disappointing, it's not a good practice or a good practice, so I have these little round inserts and those are the ones I like to use when I'm sitting now when I was making soil blocks to lift the pot, I washed this earth blocker after you can see they are square these little squares fit perfectly with my little earth blocker but there was definitely a learning curve to get nice beautiful earth blocks with it because the walls are much thinner around the squares.
I'm going to remove the seeds. Here I have my trays. It's pouring rain today so I can't do this outside. Yes, a perfect little block of dirt, so I'm going to do this many more times. You've seen me make dirt blocks many times, so I'll come back when we start planting seeds. Well, I have four trays here and I have all these flowers that I want to start with, so let's see how many more. I need to do it, so what I'm going to do is lay them out and see how many of each I think I'm going to want to plant.
Okay, I need to make at least one more tray if I do three rows of five. each so it's going to be 15 of each so I'm going to make this one more tray and then I have to go in and check the dough and see what it looks like so I'm basically out of dirt. I won't be able to make another tray, which is fine because I think we'll be able to plant enough this way, I already have all my soil blocks made. I'm still not 100% sure what exactly I'm going to do. I'm going to plant and how much of each, but I do know because I just checked.
I have to roll out the pizza rolls. I have to roll out the pizza rolls. I'm looking for my silicone mat to place it on. roll my pizza. I'll just improvise and use a piece of parchment, so this is the dough, it's doubled in size. I think that's the most uniform I'm going to get, so what we're going to do is take some of my pizza sauce and leave this, it's not completely thawed yet, but I'm not going to use all of it, so I'm just going to take out the bits. that have been thawed oh man this pizza sauce is so good I just tried it a little.
This pizza sauce recipe isfrom a cookbook called Freeze Fresh. I think it's one of my friends' cookbooks and I bought it last year and it's amazing. That's where this recipe came from and I'm going to make a lot of pizza. sauce for this upcoming growing season and I can link your cookbook below. I'm in love with it, so now that we have our pizza sauce, I'm going to add our cheese. The reason I sprayed the bottom of this is that I just had a feeling that there was a high chance that there might be something sticky when this cheese dripped down and cooked.
I'm going to add a little bit of onion because we love onions and they smell amazing, they're pretty powerful. I may be filling this too much, I don't know, and then we have sundried tomatoes. So Josh's favorite pizza topping combination is onion, pepper, and sausage, but I don't have all of those toppings, so I'm just using what I have today and we've fallen in love with sun-dried tomatoes because we love that chicken marry me. recipe, so I think he'll be super happy with this too and you could stop here if you wanted to make it vegetarian, but I think I'm going to add the pepperonis and salamis that I had left over from the party just because oh.
Well, I was going to say just because I only have a few left and I only have four, so look or not, I have six, so it was perfect to use this in this app. I think I'm going to leave out the Cowboy Candy Remover and add it to my own because I want everything to be the same just so I don't have to try to remember that this side has jalapenos and the other doesn't because I know Josh. I would prefer there to be no jalapenos. I'm simply rolling this like you would a cinnamon roll.
Okay, this made a lot of them, so I think I'm going to need more than just this one. 9 by 3 was going to cut this into nine, but I think it's I'm going to do more than that maybe not, I don't know, we'll see. I could bake it like this and it would be a strum, basically, maybe I could cut this into nine mmm, so it looks like I'm going to need one more. baking dish I think to bake them I'm going to push them down a little bit because that's what I do when I make cinnamon rolls.
I just added some cooking spray to this 9 by 9 and I'm going to get these Here I also flattened them out and let them sit for a half hour or so before baking them. I'm going to bake them, I think 350 because they're going to take. a little time to cook it completely. I usually cook pizza at 4:25, but obviously the crust is much thinner. Now I have 2 4 6 8 10 12, which is obviously more than we can have for dinner tonight as a family. out of three, but the reason I'm making so many, this is what I'm thinking at least is because I just bought an air fryer and probably the number one thing that everyone told me they like to use their air fryer for is reheating pizza .
I can't tell you how many times I've read that and obviously this isn't pizza these are pizza rolls but I thought these would reheat well in the air fryer now that I make pizza nothing ever goes to waste so I don't think these are going to go to waste , we're going to eat them for dinner tonight and then for lunch, so now we're going to go back out and start planting seeds. I'm going to pull out my stool again so I can sit and think about this a little bit and figure out how many of each thing now many of these are perennials so all the Rebecca's are pineal, the eonia is pral, the maximilan sunflower is pral and they will come back year after year so my plan is to plant a lot of these in my landscaping at least that's what I'm thinking and that's why I'm planting so many of these because if I plant them

once

I can

enjoy

them yes they all .
These that I have placed, if I plant them now, I will be able to

enjoy

them for

years

to come, so I need more land. I only have one more bag of my Vermont compost, so I really need to get more of that. I've been getting a little stressed about it because I need to remove those Snap Dragons and so far I've potted everything up in my Vermont compost so I'm running out of it. I only have one bag left and it works great. to lock the floor, I have tried floor blocking with other floors and it has been a disaster, they don't stick and then they become hard like discs or they do, so I think what I'm going to do is have another floor. that I bought for the green stock is what Green Stock recommends planting in their green stock.
It's a mix of frogs. Let me grab a bag. It's called Happy Frog. It's not made with frogs or anything. It's just the brand and I have used this on my pimple. stock and I have used other soil in my green stocks and my plants had the best results when I used this so I can link this because this is from Amazon this is really good. I was rereading the exterior, so I think. I'm going to use my last precious bag of Vermont compost to make soil blocks when I start more stuff and then when I remove these little guys, I'll use that frog mix.
Now, in some of them, you can see that there are like five floors. that and that's very tedious to poop versus one like this this is very easy to poop because there's only one little one in there so the reason I'm telling you all that is because I have a few more things I want to start that I didn't make blocks of earth for that maybe tomorrow I will make more earth blocks and start using them. I was just emphasizing what I should do there and I think I have a plan, this will be for potting. and to fill my green stock and my precious bag of Vermont compost tomorrow will be to make blocks of soil to start some of these guys, so let me walk you through and show you what I have here and remind you of all the colors so you can see how they look.
You're supposed to see all of these, some of my favorite flowers are Rebecca and all the Rebeccas that I'm going to start this year. I think they are new to me. I tried to start a lot. of them in previous years, but I didn't have good germination because I didn't cold stratify them, so I have Cherokee sunset here and I'm going to do five, well, no, I'm going to do three rows of five, so I'm going to do 15 hopefully plants of that I have Cherry Brandy Rebeca and I'm going to do the same I think with all of them I'm going to make three rows of five so I said 20 plants is 15 plants well 5 10 15 yes, here we have some cone flour, this is Paradise super duper and then here's another cone flour and they're both super pretty cone flour and eonia are the same thing you can call, you know, cone flour and eonia up here I have a mix of pink and white eonia here I have a touch green now I have this in my garden right now and it will bloom, the eonia or flour cone normally doesn't bloom until the second year, so even though this year I am going to plant the eona flower and the cone, they probably won't give me any blooms see you next year.
Now my one eonia that I planted in my garden last year bloomed the first year, but the other years in the past, I planted it from seed, it took 2 years for it to produce a flower. Both cardigans are the ones I'm most excited about and we have the Goldstrom and the Sahara, these are so stunning. They're like my favorite type of flower color. I love the rich dark colors of fall so I'm excited to see if we can get 15 plants out of that and then this is another Rebecca here so that's my last Rebecca that I have.
I'm going to plant and then this is something. I actually bought this seed. I bought it from Johnny Seed but I also bought it on Amazon. I got it from two different places and this one is a perennial sunflower, which is crazy. I had no idea about that. You could get a perennial sunflower, so let's see if we can get some of them to germinate and then I cold stratify them, but I don't have any soil blocks for them yet, so I'm going to make a full tray. of this variety of lavender, this is a smaller species of lavender, it's about 12 to 18 inches and then this variety of lavender is the most typical variety of lavender for soap, so it goes on the back of this, like this I'm going to make a whole tray of this variety of lavender I'm going to put these like this and then I have asra Rose and asra violet and I'm going to put these here I'm going to make three rows of five of each of these I put it there so I don't have to Think about how many I'm going to start.
These were some that I was cold layering, but I already have this white in this mix and then I have this one right here. They are the ones I bought on Amazon. I have one more thing I call layering and that is poppy seeds and not just the poppy flower variety but also poppy seeds. I bought poppy seeds at the supermarket and threw them in my refrigerator and hope I can see it. I don't even know, maybe I don't even have enough seed for 15. I'm going to see if I can get some poppy seeds, the poppy plant grows and then I can harvest the poppy seeds. 1 2 3 4 so I have 22 seeds here.
I'm going to plant all the seeds here, so some of the holes will have one, some of the holes will have two, and before I plant anything I need to write. down what I'm planting and all my things are in bad shape from the move, you know what I could do, see if I can do it, look at it there, so all these that I have here I will make them three and three, so it's going to do make it pretty easy to label today there are three, it's the 12th and this will be a cone flower.
This is also a cone flower, so I will start with one seed per hole and then continue. I go back and duplicate the ones I have left over so I can plant them all and I really want to have good success with this so now I'm just going to take my pen and fill in those holes and that way I know where I already planted okay here we go I'll do it we're done so now we're going to do this so this is the eonia seed and I think it has a hard shell and I think the seed is actually inside because you can see it's starting to split so I'm glad I chose using the paper towel method so the seeds will absorb some of this liquid or water and hopefully they'll germinate because of that so I'm just going to cover them so I was a little worried that this was going to get moldy , but I think it's just the seeds, so I think we're good, every year in the garden, I learn more and more and I realize you know all this gardening stuff.
It takes time to learn that every plant needs different things and we can't all learn it at the same time and one thing I didn't understand for the first 3 years of gardening is that some seeds need to be cold stratified and that's what I've been talking about. Basically, what you're trying to do with seeds that like to cold stratify is try to mimic winter. They like to be in a cold environment for an extended period of time, so they think they have gone through winter. and then when you put them in the ground and give them heat they think it's spring and they go ahead and germinate in you, so I started with Rebeca and conlow or eonia in the past and have had some success.
I've had some sprouts. but the germination rate was so incredibly poor I'm hoping doing this experiment will help with the germination rate and it's been about a week since I put these seeds in this soil and I'm starting to see some germinate, it's too early to know if my germination rate is it going to be great or is it just going to be okay so I'm glad I took this extra step to cold stratify and when I looked for ways to cold stratify there were a lot of different ways. you could take the packet of seeds and put them in the refrigerator and let the packet of seeds sit in the refrigerator.
You could use this method where you sprinkle the seeds on paper towels and wet the paper towel with a little water. a Ziploc bag and let the cold stratify in the refrigerator for at least four weeks, a lot of resources said four to six weeks but I made four in just over four weeks and then you plant them and then there were other ways you you could actually Plant your seeds in your blocks of soil or the container that you wanted to start them in and you could stick the soil and everything in the refrigerator and I didn't want to put soil in my refrigerator so I went ahead and did the towel method of paper.
However, I was worried that the damp moisture would cause my seeds to rot, so every time I opened one of my little Ziploc bags I was worried that there might be mold or something in the bag that would probably cause my seeds to not rot. . I germinated, but so far no mold or anything and it seemed like a pretty easy way to cold stratify. I have all these trays set up. I don't know where my vermiculite is, it's somewhere, but I think with all the moving it grew legs, so I'm just going to moisten these here and then when I find my vermiculite, I'm going to go ahead and cover this with vermiculite.
I really like these trays. I like their size, they are really very manageable. I'll cover. each of these in my plastic wrap to keep moisture. I have my heat mat on because now that they've been in the refrigerator for a month, a little over a month, they thought they were through winter and hopefully now they'll think, Oh my goodness! Oh my goodness, it's time to germinate or at least that's the goal, let's see, I need one more piece. I think I'll have to run inside and grab another piece because I still have what I've been using on my seeds under the grow lights. here we go, we covered this while it was there.
I just checked dinner tonight and it's not ready yet, but we have two, four, five trays, so there are 5 10 15 20 25 30 * 5, I'm not going to try to do that Math on the Spot we have 150, hopefully, plants here that,

once

they grow, we can plant them in the garden and in the landscape and enjoy them for many years, at least that is the goal, so I am going to exploit them. Guys, back to the refrigerator because I'm not ready to plant these yet. I need to make more soil blocks and the ones that still had some extra seeds I went ahead and just put them back in the zippies, the Ziploc bags and I'm going to stick that in the fridge and then maybe when I plant the aster and lavender I'll move on. and I will plant the rest of these.
I don't know, we'll see what happens with that. My timer is about to go off on my pizza rolls and these tomatoes only have a few of them that have sprouted so I want to hold them up to the light, these beautiful beautiful dalas, almost all of them have sprouted, they are a very hearty looking plant , they look extremely healthy, so I'm going to pop them or place them. those over there and I'm going to put these tomatoes here where they will be much closer to the light and they need a little bit of water. I had to remove the plastic, so I want to make sure we don't do that.
I don't have the seeds that are trying to sprout and are drying up, so I'm going to give them a drink. We were very productive here. I still have more to do. I have more plantations. I have to do. I need to improve these seeds. dragons I think I'll try to do that tomorrow. I have a lot of other things I need to do tomorrow, so I think what I'm going to do is finish all my boring office work tomorrow. first and then, as a reward, I will come up here or go out and let myself take out the dragons and finish planting the asers and lavender.
As a gift for doing all my work, so I'm going to grab these. and I'm going to go ahead and put them back in the refrigerator and I'm going to wash up and then we're going to check on our dinner. They probably have another eight minutes or so left. I am happy to have done it. I decided to just put six here and four there. I'm glad I decided to cook them at a lower temperature because they are taking a while when I take them out. I think it will be a good 45 minutes for them in the oven.
They are quite big. I probably could have extended them, oh that's my longest stopwatch to have more this way, but I think I'm happy with the size. I think one of those will be enough for us. They're so beautiful. I did it. Go ahead and top them with the rest of the green onions too because I didn't know what I would do with just a few green onions. I think I'll let them go. I think these are ready, these are the smallest ones. Maybe I'll leave them here, they smell amazing. The green onion in there is perfect, so I'm going to show you what they look like when they come out of the oven.
I want to thank you for taking the time every day to spend time with me. I want to thank you.
