Later, Ransone's corpse is left on the couch while the shapeshifter, who has transformed into Ransone,

s accustomed to her body and identity.

She checks Ransone's firearm and smiles. She then breaks the original Ransone's jaw to knock out his teeth and pours gasoline all over the house. When she leaves, the delivery guy finally arrives, so she takes the food and leaves without paying. Suddenly, the delivery man yells that the house is on fire, but the shapeshifter simply walks away. The Shapeshifter drives around the city, ignoring the police radio on the dashboard. Knowing that she cannot use Ransone's identity, she needs the body to rot again, so she discovers a way to find recreational substances. After taking one from a dealer, Shapeshifter uses the substance while he thinks about the woman he loved.
Later that night, the Shapeshifter heads to a bar and greets the dog, Max, who is always outside. Inside, he orders drinks for a woman named Julia and flirts with her. He introduces himself as Detective Ransone. As they talk, he tells himself that she is the only one who matters. They spend the night laughing and sharing stories, and end up kissing in the alley. However, the shapeshifter begins to feel pain in his side and tells Julia to run. She hesitantly leaves as he cries in pain. His abilities usually save him from the injuries suffered by his previous body until now.
He struggles to get back to his car and sees her body rotting away. Realizing that he doesn't have time, he heads to the next car, where a couple is talking. He shows them his badge and points a gun at the man. The Shapeshifter frees the woman, then orders the man to move to the passenger seat so he can get inside. The man, whose name is Sam, tries to defend himself for being with the younger woman, but the Shapeshifter punches him. He declares that since he's not ready to die, Sam has to. Moments later, the shapeshifter, who has transformed into Sam, prepares to clean up the crime when he receives a call from Sam's wife.
He soon heads to Sam's house and discovers that he lives in a family home. He admits to wanting a life like that. He enters and finds his wife, Mary, who immediately walks away angrily. He goes upstairs and sees that Sam has little kids. When he heads to the bedroom, he finds Sam's wedding ring on the side table and joins Mary in bed without speaking to her. Her daughter wakes him up in the morning and he screams angrily, scaring her. He joins the family for breakfast, but he's already starting to feel the pain, so he leaves. Accessing Sam's memories, he remembers that the young woman from last night, Rachel, is his assistant and refused to have an affair with him.
He goes to the clinic where Sam is a dentist and Rachel pretends nothing is wrong. After tending to Sam's patient, he goes to the same restaurant he visited before Emily and sees Julia outside. He hires a taxi to follow her, but the driver refuses because he seems suspicious. The Shapeshifter gives up, regretting that he has been trying to find Julia's new address for almost a year. That afternoon, he watches a movie and laughs out loud, much to the chagrin of the rest of the audience. He then returns home and joins the family for dinner that night.
Watching the kids interact makes him feel guilty, so he heads to the bar to think. There, he remembers his real family while he plays with a marble between his fingers. Finally, Julia arrives and recognizes him from the night before with Rachel. He laughs and states that he will not make the mistake of bringing another woman other than his wife again. The Shapeshifter adds that he just needed a break from his family, as he thinks about how he suddenly left Sam's family that same night. Julia sympathizes with that feeling, although she realizes that it was wrong for her to run away from her family.
She explains that if she loves her family, she should make sure to return to them. Julia shares that she had a husband and a son and that she also wanted to escape from them. Now, she just

wants

to get back to them. The Shapeshifter asks what happened, so Julia explains that her son died when he was three years old. It was difficult for her and her husband, Richard. One night, Richard organized a romantic dinner for them, hoping to forget the tragedy even if it was just for one night. They enjoyed the evening, but Richard left her afterward.
Julia thinks it was too much for Richard and that the dinner date was her way of saying goodbye to him. The Shapeshifter shares that he is afraid of what he would do if he stays, and he is not sure if he is good for his family. When the Shapeshifter declares that being good doesn't matter because bad things happen all the time, Julia adds that what matters is making sure they aren't bad. In the bathroom, the Shapeshifter sees the rot beginning, so he leaves the bar. He rents a motel room for the night, but soon wakes up to the rot spreading.
He calls Rachel and tells her that Mary kicked him out. He asks to see her, which makes Rachel suspicious of her. Still, he gains sympathy from her, so he heads to the motel. Rachel hesitantly knocks on the door and warns him that if he tries anything, she will leave. She enters and finds the room dark while the Shapeshifter is in bed. Moments later, the shapeshifter, now in Rachel's form, prepares as Rachel's real body rots in the bed. He points out that Rachel has access to antibiotics, which would slow the decomposition. He receives a call from Rachel's boyfriend, Tommy, and she excuses him by saying that he went to the pharmacy because of a migraine.
Then he turns off the phone and disposes of the real Rachel's body. After hiding the charred bones under the barn, a woman comes looking for the owner. The Shapeshifter hides and leaves through the back door. He then casually walks back to Rachel's car, but the woman, Colleen, sees her and asks who she is. Still, Rachel gets into her car and drives away. At the clinic, Shapeshifter grabs a few bottles of antibiotics and then heads to Rachel's apartment, glad that Tommy isn't home. He then heads to the same bar to sit next to Julia. Julia comments on her dress and becomes friends with her.
Julia shares that she is at the bar most nights because she has difficulty with her book. When Julia introduces herself, Shapeshifter introduces himself as Drew. After Julia comments that the bar never changes, Shapeshifter points out that he remembers what he was like in the '70s, confusing Julia since Rachel looks young. She excuses herself by saying that she is an old soul. Julia comments that Shapeshifter has sad eyes, so she tells him that she is her advisor and gives him a business card with the address of her office. Suddenly, a man offers to buy the shapeshifter a drink, so Julia leaves and tells him to have fun.
Uninterested, the Shapeshifter tries to ignore him as he looks at Julia, who is talking to a man named Robert. The Shapeshifter sees the news and realizes that Colleen had reported her to the police and that the charred bones were found under the barn. An artist's sketch of Rachel is shown on the news, so Shapeshifter excuses himself to go to the bathroom. She smells some dust and then invites the man to leave with her, planning to use him as her next body. Unbeknownst to her, someone is following them. They start kissing and using the recreational substance at Rachel's house.
The man becomes aggressive and pins her to the couch, so the Shapeshifter rejects him. Angry, she grabs a knife, but he fights back, causing her to lose the weapon. Instead, she hits him with the refrigerator door and a bottle, but he grabs the knife and attacks. The shapeshifter grabs the lamp from her and hits him with it. The bloodied man leaves the apartment, but the shapeshifter catches him and stabs him. He then changes his clothes while a neighbor finds the man's body. Shapeshifter leaves the building just as the police arrive, but when he starts running, the officers return to her car to chase her.
The Shapeshifter hides out of sight from her and enters an open garage. After the police pass, Shapeshifter sets up camp for the night. In the morning, she finds Max sleeping next to her. She moves to touch it but sees that her hand is already rotting. Suddenly, Tommy arrives and she comes out of hiding. Since Rachel is suspicious and he is her boyfriend, she decides it's not a good way to change and shoots him down. Tommy chases her, so she hides inside the back of a truck until he leaves. Pain explodes in her side, leading her to believe that she is running out of time.
She decides to tell Julia the truth, so he heads to her office building, where he sees Julia with Robert. They kiss and go on a date, so the jealous Shapeshifter follows them. Pus begins to ooze from his rotting arm just as Julia and her date leave the restaurant. Soon, they separate and Shapeshifter decides to follow Robert. The man enters her apartment, so she poses as a delivery man to force him to open the door. The shapeshifter, now in the form of Robert, calls out to Julia. He tells her that he likes her, so he asks her out on another date and Julia accepts.
That night, the Shapeshifter visits Julia at her apartment and notices an overturned photo frame. Julia puts on some music and the shapeshifter watches her happily. They enjoy some drinks and talk about their familial connection to each other. The shapeshifter leans in to kiss her and they begin to kiss. The moment is interrupted when Julia notices her bandaged torso. He explains that he just got hurt, but assures her that she's fine. They continue their intimacy in her bed and the Shapeshifter enjoys being with her that night. When Julia wakes up, the shapeshifter is already preparing breakfast. They then spend the next day enjoying each other's company, but eventually, the Shapeshifter returns home and takes care of the real Robert's body.
Since the barn is no longer an option, he takes the remains to the dam. Over the next few days, he spends more time with Julia like he always wanted. However, he knew it wasn't permanent. One day, Julia sees the news about the corpses on the farm. Rachel's body was also found, so she is no longer a suspect. Shapeshifter advises Julia not to see him, but Julia emphasizes that she has met the victims at the bar before. He offers her comfort and promises to protect her from her. One night, as he and Julia prepare for a date, he notices the rot in her flesh.
He hides in the bathroom and vomits, which worries Julia. He recovers and asks Julia if she trusts him. Worried, she sits on the couch, waiting for him to explain. The Shapeshifter tells her that he was responsible for the death of her mother when she was twelve years old. He maintains that it was an accident and that it occurred in 1954, which confused Julia. He continues that when he "took" his mother, he saw how she loved him. It was a love so pure that he had never felt anywhere else until a few years ago. He tries to explain that he takes people to turn them into other people.
If he doesn't do it, he will die. When Julia asks him what he takes, Shapeshifter explains that he takes everything that makes the person who he is, and that all the memories of him are still in his head. Still in disbelief, Julia decides to return home. He begs her to listen to the rest of her story, but Julia claims that she can't stand it. The Shapeshifter then confesses that he has known and loved her for longer than she knows. He then tells her that his truename is Drew and that he had seen her a dozen times before he became Robert.
He adds that he first fell in love with her when he felt Richard's love for her. This angers Julia, but she goes on to say that it was the second time she felt pure love. When she felt it, he wanted to make her happy, revealing that he was the Richard who organized the romantic night for her after the death of her son. When he asks where Richard is, Drew confesses that he is among the corpses on the estate. Sad and confused, Julia begins to panic as Drew explains to her that she doesn't know what he really is, but assures her that what she did was to

survive

.
Julia urges him to let her go, but he continues to corner her. Suddenly, Julia pulls out a Taser and threatens him with it. Still, he continues to say that he loves her. Julia then punches him and throws him to the ground. After her she immobilizes him, but he grabs her arms and begins changing her. Julia screams as her body contorts and her rot takes over. Drew, now in the form of Julia, cries for the only woman he ever loved. He then goes to the bar and thanks the bartender for taking care of Julia over the years.
As he finishes his drink, Drew realizes that he is the only one who can stop what is happening to him. When he returns to Julia's apartment, he allows the rot to take over her body, accepting her death. In the morning, however, he becomes encapsulated within a fleshy cocoon. He begins to break out of the cocoon and emerges in the real, aged form of him. He is confused because he is not dead and he is still not sure what he is. He goes to town, still carrying all the memories and guilt. He decides that no matter how he justifies his existence and tries to do better, the guilt will live on.
Drew goes to a park with Max and accepts that he will never learn who he really is.
